- In tonight’s top story: Canada's biggest province, Ontario, is cracking down on cell phones in class and making changes to the rules when it comes to vaping. The province says it's plan includes some of the strongest measures in this country to "protect the "mental and physical health" of children and to curb distraction at school, but some advocates say the plan itself is a distraction from more pressing issues. Kayla McLean reports.
It has been a tense weekend at number of American campuses with pro-Palestinian protests. Some schools have closed their doors or shut down certain areas. Protesters are digging in their heels and telling authorities that they won't leave. And now the movement has come to Canada, with Montreal students also refusing to take down tents at McGill University, claiming they'll stay until the school meets their divestment demands. Abigail Bimman reports.
In other news, homeownership is viewed by many in Canada as a milestone and a major step on the path toward setting oneself up financially for retirement. But breaking into the housing market remains elusive for many Canadians. In recent polling done exclusively for Global News, around 72 per cent of non-owners said they’ve “given up” on ever being able to own a home. Meanwhile, 80 per cent said homeownership is now a privilege reserved for the rich. Anne Gaviola has more on whether renters can set themselves up for financial success in the long run.
Plus, new rules in Alberta could change how much control municipal officials have over their own governance. As Heather Yourex-West reports, the changes would give the province the power to repeal bylaws and even remove elected officials.
And, the United Nations Security Council is expressing deep concern for the crisis in Sudan's Darfur region. An opposition military group is closing in on the region's main city and thousands are at risk if the conflict with the Sudanese army escalates. Nearly 7 million people are uprooted from their communities, the biggest internal displacement crisis in the world. Nearly 5 million children under the age of five and new or expecting mothers face malnutrition. Redmond Shannon reports on a crisis that the world simply cannot ignore.
Also, a new documentary series, produced by James Cameron, is taking a deep dive into a special resident of British Columbia: the giant Pacific octopus. As Kylie Stanton reports, a Vancouver Island resident - known as the octopus whisperer - was tapped to help make it happen.

yea and in today's world it wouldn't surprise me if some parents whine about their kids not being able to use their phones to shop for the latest fad of changing your gender. I'm glad I'm old enough that I would be around to witness the reversal of these silly operations.
Phones should be left in the locker during class time. For those parents who think their child should have their cell phone so mom or dad can call them in an emergency, too bad, that's why schools have a land line. Call the school, and the school can tell the student to come to the office to call home. Just like they did before cell phones.
For many it can literally mean life or death in case you need to call 911 for a medical emergency so about we keep the phones
Nah I would rather teach my daughter directly than speak with the “c” to the “unts” in the office. I taught my daughter the rules so she’s not on her phone in class but if it’s an emergency, I WILL call my daughter. On HER cell phone. Welcome to modern society.

Mobile phones should never have been allowed in schools. It's about time all those things are banned in schools.
Cut the nonsense people.Children do not need phones to make it through the day, or "gather knowledge". Teaching by an actual teacher is the focus of gong to school, so just do it! The ADHD is running rampant, shorter attention spans are caused because of how many frames per second one brain supposed to absorb everytime they are exposed to certain types of media and video games, all day. It’s terrible!

Cell phones were heavily restricted when I went to school between 2008-2013. If the rules became so relaxed, then this would explain why nearly all of my Gen Z coworkers are so unproductive

all the parents and kids saying oh no how could they stop cell phones in class... well, 3 day suspension if students have them out in class..... next infraction a week... then a month .... maybe then after their parents have to find other ways to deal with them as they are suspended and find a babysitter, will i dont know "parent"
Your comment goes against the grain of everything schools are trying to accomplish with education for everyone, despite the parenting resources available at home, which you will agree are lacking in many cases. Suspensions are only given out in extreme cases that involve serious violations because is is widely accepted that a student acting out just wants out of class. With your rules, there would be a massive cohort of kids that get no education because they would be constantly suspended. I agree that they should not be a distraction in class, but realize that computers are playing a larger roll in lessons at school and a cell phone is essentially a small computer.

Yeah, I don't see any difference with this legislation. Teachers have always had the right to take cell phones or demand they are out of sight out of mind, and vaping products are illegal for anyone under 18 anyhow. The rules are already there, the problem is enforcement. Rephrasing the rules will not change behaviour, only a change in how the rules are enforced will bring change.
I don't own a cell phone, but better or worse, they are a huge part of todays world, for students and adults alike. Often times the phones that kids have work better than the school provided tech, and if you think internet isn't an important educational tool than think again, research is not done in the library anymore. I understand the addictive capacity of social media and the distractions cell phones pose in a learning environment, but removing them from the equation is not preparing our kids for the real world. If schools don't teach kids right and wrong ways with cell phone use it's even less likely they will get those valuable lessons at home. I taught elementary music for over a decade and a massive chunk of what I had to teach was not related to the music curriculum at all, it was about how to behave and interact with each other.
Dare I also bring up the fact that suspension is a last resort and highly discouraged by most boards, only to be used in extreme cases that involve violence, theft, or other legal violations. The attitude is that easy suspensions just allow kids that don't want to be in school an easy means to get out. How do you think the threat of suspension for multiple violations of cell phone rules is going to go down?
Parents who more than likely bought these devices for the kids should be the ones too address this and teachers need to focus on teaching

These school policies should have been done a long time ago. As a parent, we have suggested these to our kids’ teachers even beforehand so our kids can concentrate in school.

Our youth are on a terrible path IMO. No longer do parents have control over their kids but to make it worse they haven't educated them properly or prepared them for a life that is definitely looking to be much tougher than mine. Sheltering their kids from the reality of our world is certainly not going well. Pay attention to how often student chose to just holler towards our government as though there is some type of fix in the works to solve all their troubles.

I agree with the idea of cellphone bans, social media and vaping/smoking on school property. But come on be realistic, good luck on teachers enforcing this. They've tried this before and it didn't work. When I was in school, they tried to ban youtube on school computers? We found ways around it, just like kids will find ways around these bans now.
The information you can get on your phone is more accurate and useful than anything your going to find in an Ontario high school, they don't Even have shop classes or gym classes in some. Your better off looking for answers online

The schools need a strong security presence possibly special constable's and ban all Cell Phone's from the schools and it cannot be left for a teacher to take a cellphone or a vape from students...Do not allow the phone in the school and then you wont have to take them from unruly kids...
There is an easier way. Just jam the signals… within a 5 ft. radius of any school. Plus - no leaving school campus during school hrs. Or I’d like to think students would be disciplined enough not to use them. It happens in other countries. But it does have to be enforced for it to work.

We also should restrict Mobile for teachers in the class. Often main teachers are on cell phone playing candy crush and assistant teacher handling class matters. Teachers productivity is heavily ignored area which I don't know why no one talks!!

Cell phones, pads, and computers are needed tools for learning. Restrict device entertainment network usage based on grades. More jobs daily require device usage and multitasking. We must look into what the future of work will look like for students today. I imagine work in the future will require the use of pads and communicators.
It’s cellphone usage in the classroom and vaping on campus. You don’t need that, but what you need is good grades. Otherwise, what’s the point?
There are still going to be people in the construction industry, and mining, and mechanic, and welding and water quality controllers; police; firefighters; newsmen; miners; drivers; nurses; doctors; brain surgeons; inventors; prostitutes; teachers; bankers; accountants; butchers; bakers; candle - stick - makers. This is gonna fail so badly. Cellphones and beepers were originally banned by schools. Didn't work. Smoking has always been "banned" by schools yet every high school has a smokers hangout. What are they gonna do physically remove the vape or cellphone from the kids hand? The kid will just say "nah" and walk away.

You know what results in worse educational outcomes? Overly harsh punitive measures against teenagers. Smoking and vaping are already banned in schools, this does nothing but create students who don't want to be in class.

Children who are type 1 diabetic with a CGM that shows their blood sugar levels on a cell phone will need a phone to check that. Health needs cannot be prohibited as it is a necessary check and does not take long. Their life would be at risk if they were prevented from doing the checking for hours.
