I had a 1.4 tfsi 185 as a company car for a few years. Took a lot of proverbial from colleagues whilst I had it but I loved it-decent performance and fuel economy and living in M/cr city centre at the time was a doddle to park. Great little car.
An old friend of mine had one of these in school. It was the 1.4 tfsi. It felt miles apart from my 2015 C1 that I was driving at the time. The engine was genuinely fast, I definitely see what you mean by them being fun to drive and chuckable. What a great little car! And great video too happy Christmas Matt!

@@HighPeakAutos No probs mate. Can’t explain to you how long I took trying to find a car to buy last year, until I came across your channel. A while ago we searched for a A1, my wife just fancied Audi's, then our common sense kicked in, and for the same price range, 12-15k, we found a fully loaded Mazda 3 Hatchback from the same year, wich feels more premium and more like a car. And it has a decent 2.0 liter engine.
Shame they downtuned the engine for the European market. I know you can get it unlocked/remapped but it makes it feel slightly underpowered given it’s a 2.0 engine.
I purchased an S1 Competition (5 door) 2 years ago from Audi and the fun factor was amazing; such a quick wee car and phenomenally grippy. However, being used to Golf Mk7’s and Audi A3’s, it became quickly apparent that size was an issue (oo-er) - in every way ! Also, infotainment was very dated (& small), but Audi were willing to update the Sat-Nav for only £500 !!! I only had the car for 10 months and traded in for a fully loaded Golf mk7 GTI Performance, I instantly felt at home again. A1’s are nice wee cars, but regardless of spec, there are better alternatives out there.
Yeah I had an S1 as a loaner whilst mine was in. Hilarious wee car, and great fun! My small car days were over when the A1 went, and I currently drive a 23 Volvo V90 T6 Recharge Ultimate. Quicker than an S1 and as much fun, just no rattles and not a bone shaker!!
My elderly mother drives a 2018 model year 1.4TFSI in black which is fully loaded and automatic. It’s just covered 9000 miles and is a little gem. I concur completely with this review. There is no better quality small car out there just now and the running costs are very reasonable. It is after all a VW Polo in a posh frock when all is said and done and no worse for that.
The camera work on many of your videos is getting very professional. Not a bad little car the A1 although I wonder if you are paying a premium for the badge. I agree that Audi interiors are really nice and must be one of its strongest selling points.
I love my 2017 AUDI A1 1.4 TFSI Sport. It absolutely does anything I need without any trouble. I get from A to B in comfort and at a decent pace. It suits me as a 62 year old bloke.
My other half has the 1.0t, and it's not a bad runner at all. She's had it from new, no problems to speak of aside from a snapped spring once. No extras on hers though, so quite bare. Engine does its job nicely, pulls well low down. Runs out of puff quite early, but for driving on public roads its plenty capable. Makes a surprisingly nice noise from inside the cabin too - although it may have a sound synthesizer, I've never looked. The part that surprises me, is with it being an 66 plate and the base model its still valued higher than my 2014 Focus ST2. Admittedly the Audi has under 30k miles on it but still. But thats the thing I find with any of the VW group cars. They hold their value, which is good if you own it. But I've always found buying one a poor value proposition, considering the alternatives available at the same price range when buying 2nd hand. EDIT: Oh and with regards to the first owner being a cheapskate and not speccing satnav, with these it's a yearly fee to enable it. Which is ridiculous.
Competent is a great choice of word for Audi in general. I'm not a vag fan boy by any means but credit where it's due, they're solid, competent cars. The A1 though is a bit mobile hairdresser for me personally.
I would say the biggest problem lem with the A1 is the existence of the A3 I mean if you walk around a big (talking available car size ) used car lot, and get the chance to sit / drive both, the argument for the A1 is vastly diluted.
I love my 2018 1.4tfsi 125bhp black edition. Mega spec inc Bose, heated seats, cruise etc. Not had any problems in 3 years, so cheap to run, i'll probably keep it for years more. Hold their value well too!
Great review of a modern middle-age middle-class safe-mobile. Did anyone ever buy one for anything other than 4 rings I wonder? Merry Christmas, Matt, looking forward to your vids in 2023.
Even though I drive a TT Mk 1 with approximately 210 hp, I really really love the A1. My family owns one with the 1.2 TFSI, which has only 86 hp but it's so much fun to cruise around with it. It handles very well and looks really beautiful as a 2-door with s-line exterior.
A young colleague of mine was looking for a 5 door petrol one of these. I suggested an A3 instead. They also seem to be cheaper than A1's. I found her an absolutely pristine 1 owner A3, with the 1.0 turbo engine and after driving it she couldnt think of even one reason to buy an A1 over an A3 for the same (or even less) money. Even when you consider size, if you think an A3 is too big, I suggest driving lessons.
I dreamt last night we lived in a totalitarian state where everyone was obliged to drive a Suzuki Wagon R. I woke with such a peaceful feeling knowing I already had one. Post-person Pat rides again. Happy Christmas Matt. 👊🏼🙏
Great video! As a mini fan I totally agree with you about the slightly goofy looks and firm ride. However, only the second gen mini has the horrible Peugeot engine. First gens all came with the BMW/Chrysler tritec engine which was very reliable when paired to a decent getrag gearbox because of is cast iron block and low state of tune. The newer minis use a tried and tested 1.5l litre engine in the one and cooper which aren't bad units and were even used in the BMW i8! Have a great Christmas Matt!
@@stephandolby Yeah both PSA/and BMW MINI had big parts in building these engines. VTi/Vanos, timing chain and timing Timing tensioner, Oil consumption, carbon build up (on the Turbo models)as well as high pressure fuel pump.. I do love the sound they make for a 4 cylinder they are zippy and fun to drive in the correct cars and get good gas mileage for the time they were made. But it's just not worth the hustle. EURO5 regulations made them better but they still were horrible.
Fantastic video as usual. A friend of mine had one of these she thought it was fantastic. It's a car that's never been on my radar but they do look good. Cheers Phil from Newark
great review as always! i’ve been driving my A1 1.4 tfsi DSG since 2014 and it’s still running pretty well, the only thing that annoys me is that there’s no cruise control in my spec. In January I plan to drive to Portugal from Russia on this car with my whippet
I bet it has all the wiring and hardware for cruise, a swap of buttons and a visit to somebody who can turn the feature on in the cars electronic system. I have had 2 newer astras ,both of which I added cruise with just a £15 cruise control stalk and £10 cash to a vauxhall tec on his lunch break to enable it.
Another thing you forgot to mention is the parts for this car are difficult to get and expensive but I freaking love it besides it as a better sound system then a Skoda Octavia.
My son had a 17 plate A1 very low mileage approx 18K, service history, had it 12 months cost him £1800 the main issues being electrical , lost confidence got rid. He previously had a fiesta and not a problem. The point to this comment is just because it’s an Audi does not mean it’s bulletproof.
I bought my daughter one of the last old model Polos - a match edition (75bhp) she's just passed her driving test - it's fabulous, I prefer it to the newer Polo & the Audi a1.
Another great video Matt. Always entertaining, very watchable. 👌😉👏👍 never miss your videos, regardless if the car or price they’re always great. Standout reviewer 👌
I have a VW Up! TSI with the same engine I believe, the 1.0 3 cylinder turbo engine. That engine has a cam belt. Great engine and I was lucky to find one with every extra including heated seats, climate control, auto lights and wipers, and cruise control. The interior is quite cheap in comparison with an A1 though.
I suppose its better than buying a Fiat 500, Vauxhall Adam, Renault Twingo or Ford KA. But yeah generally speaking you want to get a BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi in their bigger engines for the performance and the driving and optioned properly to make it a proper cruiser rather than buying a base model and engine
@D Woolwichpoly it's probably slightly better. And it's not worth it. Ur paying audi prices on labour when it comes to repair but ur getting a dull car with an audi badge
Nice video. The VW Polo is obviously very similar, but does have an unfortunate boy-racer image. I loved my Polo GTI. I’ve never driven a Skoda Fabia but again mechanically is very similar.
Many thanks. One parked near where I live for the past 8 years and it looks just as fantastic as it did in Day 1, in a bright red with a silver splash on the C-pillar.
Had the 1.4 tfsi with the 7 speed DSG - was a good little car but the dual clutch gearbox gave me endless issues and eventually was the reason I replaced it. Had I had a manual I’d have kept it a lot longer.
You should do a review of the latter Mini with the BMW 1.5 three cylinder turbo engine. It's a completely different car and in my opinion the ride is better than the Audi A1.
Well Matt when I tried my A1 out, with a salesman beside me in case I went too far, I showed him a fault the engine had and therefore rejected it as unroadworthy. Bought an A3 instead with an auto box. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, see you in '23.
Great video. Not mentioned in your video but you could get a decent spec SEAT Ibiza for a lot less. Essentially the same car in a different "dress". And much better looking. Fair enough the interior might not be Waitrose inspired but more Sainsbury's or Tesco.
I would rather have the current generation Mazda 2. One of the most underated B segment products around unless your in the know. Also high quality and as reliable as an MX-5. It even shares the 1.5 skyactiv engine with the aforementioned roadster. It's a great little car in many ways.
Classy looking little thing. This generation of Audi was just about perfect, in terms of styling. It's like that random business man you would see walking around the CBD, well groomed and professional looking.
Love mine Matt, it's 10 year old now and fresh as a dirty daisy (1.6td). It's got 8k of extras to help the commute too. As Audi advertised....... Its not a super mini... Its a small Audi 😏 Top review again Matt 👌
Just parted with a 1.4 Tfsi great car very quiet engine has a timing belt which in my opinion is better providing you change it at the correct intervals ( no rattling) bought a vw troc noticeable drop in quality!
my 11 plate 1.4 tfsi is now on 125k miles had it since 62k and i’ve not had many issues with it at all. had more small electrical issues as opposed to engine issues
Matt you should be on proper telly. You look and sound like you could be presenting a daytime show on ITV. This is a compliment by the way lol..... I'll take 5 percent when you've hit the big time mate🤪
The 1.4 is great car to buy if you enjoy touching your soft plastics whilst broken down on the hard shoulder, a shockingly poor unit for long term reliability. In the case of the diesels it not a case of if the injectors give trouble - it's when. These A1s on the surface are nice cars - have good showroom appeal and image - but they are more troublesome than people would care to admit, buy one with caution and with a cast iron warranty. By the way - the Prince Engine fitted to the previous gen Mini isn't a Peugeot Unit - it's a joint development between the then PSA and BMW - the problems on of which are created by faulty BMW derived stretched timing chains, tensioners and vanos - the Peugeot derived part - namely the block and pistons is the most reliable thing about it. I wouldn't touch any European brand with a bargepole when it comes to a used small car of this Ilk anymore - their durability just doesn't cut the mustard.
I remember learning to drive in an Audi A1, always thought it was quite a comfortable car to drive and I could get a comfortable driving position and I'm 6ft. I was almost tempted to buy one, then ended up buying a Skoda Superb 🤣
Had an S1 as a hire car on a number of occasions for business trips from Bristol to Lincoln. Enjoyable little thing to drive but I found it difficult to find a driving position that didn't leave me needing to almost roll out of the car after a long-ish drive, and I'm neither excessively tall (6ft 1in) nor 'big' (14st 10lbs).
Excellent breakdown of the A1. It really is the direct successor to the rather more funky A2 of old. Both are cars based on Polo running gear with an intent to create a "big car feel" in a small car.
@@MrLg55555 A2 has a cult following are non too shabby to drive, just remember they are a1990's design the original A Class Merc definitely abysmal. The Ai1definirely worth consideration
@@oliverstemp9132, aluminium space frame or not, which I am fully aware of, the A2 was way overpriced, abysmal in the driving / handling dept and only appealed to those who believed in " One upmanship"!... Deluded fools
Hi, think you said that the petrol engines were chain driven. The 1lt petrol is a belt, same engine as in my 1lt Golf. The 1.4lt is also belt in both 125 and 150 bhp derivatives. The 1. 2lt earlier engine was indeed chain driven, and suffered from chain slap, if as you say, not maintained properly, I too think they make a great second hand buy. Love the video formats you are putting out, thanks 👍
Just don't forget that if left parked up for a couple weeks (whilst sunning yourself on holiday for example) the timing chain tension will loose oil pressure and on first initial start it it could allow the cams to jump causing it either not start or run like a lumpy bag of crap!!!! Although this issue might have been sorted by now, we've only experienced it on earlier 3 cylinder models... Polos that kinda thing.
What are your thoughts on the Toyota IQ? I test drive one in 2012, but chose the A1 in the end as the low depreciation meant a much cheaper monthly payment than the IQ. I think the IQ is a clever little car though, with some big car tech and refinement that you wouldn't expect.
It’s lovely car A1 I was going to buy one two doors auto 2010 but the second hand dealer asked £9000. Then he sold it for £8000 after 😞. Thanks Matt for this information
I had one of these, 1.4, it was nippy, but the build quality was dire. It spent weeks in the dealers getting rattles fixed etc. Not the premium product Audi had you believe!!
I have a 1.4tfsi 2011, still got it now and I've only had a power steering issue that fixed itself, a sticking turbo solenoids that just needed cleaning, and a leaking rear wash wiper. Had 2 coils go but I think that's common in most cars.
@@stevenm8970 yeah my issue was you apparently but an Audi for the ‘premium’ quality. It was no better than a far cheaper Polo. I didn’t have any mechanical issues but the rattles were ridiculous!
😃Great video- very informative many thanks.I have exactly the same model an 2018 with sat-nav such lovely cars. This is my third after the diesel 1.6 and the petrol 1.4.Thanks again.

And, as an added bonus, by buying a Mazda instead of an Audi you found out you were both, not total cocks.
- Cam chain should last the life of the car
TFSI: Hold my plastic tensioners
Literally bought 1 last week S Line £5k 2013 plate 103k miles on it so far so good
Love the car name graphics on the road in the last few vids 👍
I love my 2017 AUDI A1 1.4 TFSI Sport. It absolutely does anything I need without any trouble. I get from A to B in comfort and at a decent pace. It suits me as a 62 year old bloke.
I used to have a 1.4tfsi A1 back in 2011 until 2016.. Only got rid of it cos I left the country. Was a great little car
I've had my 2015 A1 TFSI for a few years now. Absolutely love it and will not be trading it anytime soon. Just looks like a class act.
Quality review of a car related to its competitors. The camera work was great as well. Better than anting on mainstream TV. Looks a great car tbh!
Thanks!
I would say the biggest problem lem with the A1 is the existence of the A3
I mean if you walk around a big (talking available car size ) used car lot, and get the chance to sit / drive both, the argument for the A1 is vastly diluted.
Great review. I've had a 1.4TFSi for 4 years and it really is a pleasure to own and drive.
My favourite little car!
When I don’t need a big car anymore I’m definitely getting one of these!
By far the best looking little car out there.
Good choice!
My little sister has a 3 door one like this. It’s a really special car. Worth the premium price tag.
I drove for a week a new A1 with 1.0 tfsi, 115 hp with 7 DSG. I was really surprised how good the car behaves on a Highway.
Very nice
A young colleague of mine was looking for a 5 door petrol one of these. I suggested an A3 instead. They also seem to be cheaper than A1's. I found her an absolutely pristine 1 owner A3, with the 1.0 turbo engine and after driving it she couldnt think of even one reason to buy an A1 over an A3 for the same (or even less) money. Even when you consider size, if you think an A3 is too big, I suggest driving lessons.
MPG?
@@ifyouarefeelingsinister with 1.0 its not even a question to ask!
How much was it
I dreamt last night we lived in a totalitarian state where everyone was obliged to drive a Suzuki Wagon R.
I woke with such a peaceful feeling knowing I already had one.
Post-person Pat rides again.
Happy Christmas Matt. 👊🏼🙏
I’ve been close to getting an S1, went in one a few years ago and they’re fantastic little rockets.
Yes, but if they have any power they feel like they have Flintstone's suspension and ride like a shopping trolley.
The Prince engine wasn't unreliable because of the Peugeot bits, either.
EURO5 regulations made them better but they still were horrible.
ive had nearly 40mpg on the motorway in my s3, but I love that wee car, ive just bought an a1 1.6 diesel wow what a car im definitely an Audi fan
Fantastic video as usual. A friend of mine had one of these she thought it was fantastic. It's a car that's never been on my radar but they do look good. Cheers Phil from Newark
My head tells me as a retired car sparks to run from German cars, my heart loves the A1.
great review as always! i’ve been driving my A1 1.4 tfsi DSG since 2014 and it’s still running pretty well, the only thing that annoys me is that there’s no cruise control in my spec. In January I plan to drive to Portugal from Russia on this car with my whippet
wow my 2004 mk 5 golf had cruise control
I bet it has all the wiring and hardware for cruise, a swap of buttons and a visit to somebody who can turn the feature on in the cars electronic system.
I have had 2 newer astras ,both of which I added cruise with just a £15 cruise control stalk and £10 cash to a vauxhall tec on his lunch break to enable it.
Ive been using a 1.6tdi for 11 years in Portugal and love it!
I’m
Addicted to cars now I have a car pitch in Reddish. You were my inspiration.
Ah well done. Good luck with everything
The point to this comment is just because it’s an Audi does not mean it’s bulletproof.
that A1 graphic on the road was cool.
0:44 that was great. Very well done.
I bought my daughter one of the last old model Polos - a match edition (75bhp) she's just passed her driving test - it's fabulous, I prefer it to the newer Polo & the Audi a1.
I always liked this car a lot.
Would like to see more small car videos❤
Wotcha Matt !
Just shows how badge engineering still works 😉
Another great video Matt. Always entertaining, very watchable. 👌😉👏👍 never miss your videos, regardless if the car or price they’re always great. Standout reviewer 👌
He's so slick as a presenter, he will end up being a real telly star
@@ftw1540 totally agree and I hope so too @highpeakautos
I have a VW Up! TSI with the same engine I believe, the 1.0 3 cylinder turbo engine. That engine has a cam belt. Great engine and I was lucky to find one with every extra including heated seats, climate control, auto lights and wipers, and cruise control. The interior is quite cheap in comparison with an A1 though.
Hey you! Im impressed with you more than the Audi A1.
Buying an Audi with a 1.0 means you care more about the badge than anything else, in my opinion.
That's a bit rich. Making a comment about the badge and judging people based on their decisions makes you an even worse badge snob.
What bellend would buy a 1.0 Ltr Vauxhall over an A1? And it’s your first car, judging from your name your uncles brothers cousins brought yours.
All DSG's are a problem
You should do a review of the latter Mini with the BMW 1.5 three cylinder turbo engine. It's a completely different car and in my opinion the ride is better than the Audi A1.
Great new graphics and overlays . Worthwhile improvements on an already slick presentation.👍
Thanks
Good to hear that Audi’s are now well made and without issues
No they are not. These TFSI engines can be problematical.
😂
Classy looking little thing. This generation of Audi was just about perfect, in terms of styling. It's like that random business man you would see walking around the CBD, well groomed and professional looking.
Love mine Matt, it's 10 year old now and fresh as a dirty daisy (1.6td).
It's got 8k of extras to help the commute too.
As Audi advertised....... Its not a super mini... Its a small Audi 😏
Top review again Matt 👌
Just parted with a 1.4 Tfsi great car very quiet engine has a timing belt which in my opinion is better providing you change it at the correct intervals ( no rattling) bought a vw troc noticeable drop in quality!
The filming quality is really improved. nice b roll footage. good work
Thanks
Absolutely brilliant review of a car for a sane world. 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
Thanks!
Amazingly well put together video. Enjoyed watching it, even if I'll never buy an A1.
Thanks!
You have upped your game with these effects and a camera car. Excellent content! You may need to change your channel name to WoW!Car!
I always under the impression the VW and Audi 1.4 engine was best avoided. Smart looking car especially the 3 door.
You are right!
my 11 plate 1.4 tfsi is now on 125k miles had it since 62k and i’ve not had many issues with it at all. had more small electrical issues as opposed to engine issues
The A1 is a nice car. Its only problem is being a sort of successor to the A2, which was genius.
Matt you should be on proper telly. You look and sound like you could be presenting a daytime show on ITV. This is a compliment by the way lol..... I'll take 5 percent when you've hit the big time mate🤪
Haha thank you
The 1.4 is great car to buy if you enjoy touching your soft plastics whilst broken down on the hard shoulder, a shockingly poor unit for long term reliability.
Thank you for all the tips and what to look, especially on Land Rovers.
A2 is an utterly dreadful contraption... As embarrassing as a Smart car and original Mercedes A class...
@@MrLg55555 A2 has a cult following are non too shabby to drive, just remember they are a1990's design the original A Class Merc definitely abysmal. The Ai1definirely worth consideration
The A2 had an aluminium space frame like an A8, not the Polo.
@@oliverstemp9132 Was a very different car in that respect, under rated in many ways
@@oliverstemp9132, aluminium space frame or not, which I am fully aware of, the A2 was way overpriced, abysmal in the driving / handling dept and only appealed to those who believed in " One upmanship"!... Deluded fools
Thanks for posting the video, I'm loving the car. As you say nice to drive and to be in. Merry Christmas to all at High peak.
Nice car and review, and shirt. Merry Christmas mate. Keep up the great work.
My sister had a 2015 S1, that was a fun little car 🤪, excellent review keep them coming.
Thanks! 👍

"Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year" to you Sir.🎄🎉🎊🎆
Very appropriate that you did speak a bit of german while driving it. Would expect this to be a feature on other car reviews going forward.
I already do 😂
Another great and informative video. Thanks Matt, have a smashing christmas.
We had a 2017 S1 and it was a fantastic car, not just fast for a little car but just f**king fast.🙂
What are your thoughts on the Toyota IQ? I test drive one in 2012, but chose the A1 in the end as the low depreciation meant a much cheaper monthly payment than the IQ. I think the IQ is a clever little car though, with some big car tech and refinement that you wouldn't expect.
I’ve always wanted I high specked A1. Looks really good on lowered chassis and bigger wheels
As well built as a BMW ..... Matt you need a Toyota or a Honda!
My daughter loves Audi so for her first real car I bought!,,,, a Toyota and yes she loves her Toyota but still loves Audi
The 1.4 tfsi CoD 150 drives really well and gets really good mpg
Great content & variety again Matt. 👌🏼
06:45 what arseholes! When the door seals went on my Seat Leon a month out of warranty they fixed it for me, as a 'gesture of good will'.
Nice vid Matt...some cool editing.

You are right!
@@stevenm8970 yeah my issue was you apparently but an Audi for the ‘premium’ quality. It was no better than a far cheaper Polo. I didn’t have any mechanical issues but the rattles were ridiculous!
