VOR should honor John by implementing mandatory improved technical solutions securing that a sailor can always be found, eg a small backpack with water-activated GPS, satphone, beacon and VHF. It is technically feasible, and not particularly expensive.
This leg of the race was so bad that Vestas dismasted, and Mapfire had to call an emergency stop to have a mast issue repaired. Anyone trying to down play the conditions here are ridiculous. They we're in high seas traveling 20knots literally a mile over ground every three minutes.. . By the time they would have gotten the team on line to respond to a man overboard, drop the sails, and turn the boat, theyd be a mile or more from where he went over. Then to try and motor INTO the wind and waves back to that spot, it's damn near hopeless.
Here is a timeline statement from which outlines some of the details. Scallywag www.volvooceanrace.com/en/news/11370_Update-from-Team-Sun-Hung-Kai-Scallywag.html
Ben Ferrando common cruising boats have bow to stern jack lines. Multiple tethers so you are never unclipped from a jack line. In a race that is pushing the limits of hardware their is no good reason to have the same safety common cruisers have.
Condolences. This is sad but i assume Mr. Fischer was aware of risk, took it gladly. Bit of hero in my book.Isn't that old boy from last interation wearing "Staff Crew" shirt
What coast was It near? Coast guards generally don't do open ocean reacues too far from land. The open ocean EVERY VESSEL is a rescue vessel as most open ocean rescues are private/commercial vessels picking up survivors of another
Yeah, cool to spend a few days in a fucking storm, risking the boat in the waves while having only the tiniest sliver of hope for finding a dead body. Nice
@@Niko-im8guAs an interesting sidenote, Team ABN-AMRO retrieved Han Horrevoets in the 2005-6 season after he was washed overboard at night, 1300 nm from Land's End. He succumbed to his injuries unfortunately - It's too bad they couldn't find John Fisher & return him home to family for burial, etc. John was lost under poor conditions at night in the Southern Ocean - cold, wind, spray- must have been like looking for a needle in a haystack. I hope John didn't suffer for too long, poor soul. Condolences to the Horrevoets & Fisher families - ⛵🌅
Watching these videos of these boat's barreling through these nearly frozen seas begs the question, why? But, there are plenty of other sport's that on average are much more dangerous, high altitude mountaineering for one that also gets it's fair share of armchair quarterbacks. Men die as they live, always been that way, always will.
Monday morning quarterbacking by these negative, uninformed & UNINVOLVED individuals, who throw blame like darts at a dartboard thousands of miles away, show their ignorance and lack of empathy for a fellow experienced & knowledgeable seaman, as well as his fellow crewmen. Also family & friends. This is an absolute tragedy. The sea conditions, the location of other boats on the leg, and many other factors, I'm sure, contributed to this sad event. It is not polite to speak ill of the lost. Have, at least, a bit of Decency. Rest Peacefully in the Deep, John Fisher.
Obviously the rave is more important to you guys , I’ve been sailing for years in Alaska and I’ve found three of three of my crew men who fell overboard in circumstantial weather. You guys are a joke, put a motor in where you can rescue your crewmen! If a race more important than a search and rescue or is this what you sign up for?..... or abandoning you’re own family? I emphasized with the crews decision but as a skipper I wouldn’t stop until I found my man. Aloha to all and ALWAYS remain in your three points of contact.
This kind of uninformed comment is offensive. Here's the statement from the team: www.volvooceanrace.com/en/news/11370_Update-from-Team-Sun-Hung-Kai-Scallywag.html Firstly note that the boats have a motor, which they used. Secondly, note that SHK Scallywag is not continuing the race! They have abandoned the leg, and are heading for Chile. They abandoned the search because the first priority in any rescue is not to increase the casualty count. They were 1400 nm from shore in a bad and rapidly worsening storm. They had already searched far longer than the expected survival time in those conditions, and to stay risked the rest of the crew. You honestly thought they abandoned their crew member just for a race?
Matthew Booth those boats are built for much worse conditions. They could and should have stayed around longer. The only reason I think they abandoned the search so early was because they believed he was unconscious before he hit the water and would likely not have survived very long.
Wynter-wainui Gross- your acting like your a hero! every situation and circumstance is different, easy to comment when your not there! Matthew Booth is correct, Jttv- your comments are uninformed and offensive! at least both of you could show some respect to the sailor that's tragically lost his life.......R.I.P. John Fisher
WTF?! 7hrs where was locater becon? They should be searching at least a day? The Owners & Sponsers should fire everyone, and if anyone of the crew should have jumped overboard to make the boat stay, if there were boats close they should have stayed too, seems like greed has more value than life?! Minimum DQ the boat, have the pull into closest port for an inquiry, hell the US warships search for a week or more and there warships! I am going to have to watch, if this boat is still racing, you will have lost a fan and I will boycott sponsor's
Yeah it's pretty apparent you've never been in a small boat in a storm in a freezing ocean thousands of miles from shore...it's a tragedy but frankly your comment is the equivalent of someone with no medical knowledge complaining about specific steps in a brain surgery

Absolutely not
They should have a PFD on
Racing should NEVER take priority over people...nor will I take serious anyone that thinks otherwise
why no GPS on their PFDs?
Tragic to hear! Was he not wearing a PLB?

Yes, he was. They also dropped buoys. They didn't even find the buoys.
R.I.P. John .
It's possible to transition from one tether to another while never being unclipped. Not optimal for racing for sure, but come on its the South Sea.
I don't understand how you people even find the guts to comment such shit. Have some respect.

they must have coastgard searching
david carter Would take them a week to get there minimum

Shouldn't have been hours of search it should have been days - wtf?
are you an absolute moron?
