I got my guitar for Christmas was too excited to start learning so started the basics on RUclips and then did guitar lessons for a couple of months but as a typical introvert, I didn't enjoy it much and lost interest. Now I teach myself everything on RUclips for free. Once you find a good youtuber that works for you, you really can't go wrong
For a beginner one of the HUGE benefits of working with a teacher in-person over RUclips is their ability to provide feedback based on what they observe to improve technique. Beginners can't "see" what they are doing wrong and practicing more only solidifies bad habits, making them harder to remediate later.
Excellent, informative presentation and primer on all the main aspects of ukeleles--well done! After playing guitar for a few decades, I recently bought my first uke, a Kala Super Tenor, all mahogany. I'm delighted with it and I've been playing the heck out of it. Working with 4 strings has helped me discover voicings I hadn't previously considered on guitar. It's helping me hear new melodies and I've gotten two songs out of it! Now I'm starting to understand why some of my guitar-player buddies have gone uke crazy. All the best, and keep up the good work!
Great Video Guys, All thing Ukulele are of interest to me being a newbie, Keep them coming, Maybe a well thought out teaching coarse could be in the future. Well done both of you. Regards Si
12:25 The Takumi definitely sounds the best - the most full-bodied, complex sound. However, the Eastman was pretty good, too. I would say it would be the best value of the three (3) of them…. I don’t know that much about the budget end ones, as there probably are so many of them - but the Kala did sound like what most people (guitar players, for example) would expect from an ukulele. It sounded alright - but especially in comparison to the other two, I thought it sounded squishy (like the notes were squished together - I know, hard to explain)! Personally, if I were the one looking, I would be looking for something with a price budget in the range between the Kala and the Eastman, which sounds good to me.
8:12 And, btw, Eastman is known for making mandolins! They are one of the recommended companies for people starting out on mandolin!… Just a tidbit! :)
Great video guys thank you very much for all the information. Ps: I'm loving my new Pono acacia/ cedar tenor! thank you Phil & Alex for helping me the other day with choosing!
You mention lowering the nut grooves, but can you give us a more objective measurement like the height at first fret to the string the way you did at the 12th fret?
Ouch! My beautiful Kala Tenor needs surgery! The action is too high. I can sand down the bridge. But the nut looks locked in there. Both parts are plastic. I hope I don't mess it up. I love this ukulele.🦋
10:57 Wow! That is a lot more expensive then what I perceived an ukulele could be! The most expensive I saw was $700 here… Could you play these three (3), so we can hear the differences in tone in a sound test? Thanks!
10 years ago it was Concerts and if you include beginners its probably still the most popular size world wide now. For about 5 years now, 70% of the ukes we sell are Tenors regardless of the players budget or ability.
I have one more question. :) What can i do against a "dead spot" on a ukulele? In my case, the C-String on the 4th fret (E4) on my new islander-tenor sounds a little bit "plonky" with less sustain. Are there possibilitys to change that? best regards and thanks for your videos!
I wouldn't normally disagree but when researching my own courses I found them to be the worst by a mile with lots of incorrect statements made about the ukulele in particular. They even list the sizes wrong on one of their home pages. I am glad they have helped you learn to play but I wouldn't feel comfortable not chipping in as I have heard so much overwhelmingly bad feedback in the past 18 months about the service.
Interesting, but how could you know that wasn’t the individual instrument? It’s impossible to judge a difference in tone on the cutaway alone. It’s definitely a case by case basis
@@SouthernUkuleleStore But I thought they were both the same Islander Model.... just one was cutaway and one was not..... But then I don't have a great musical ear...
MrEricgal they are the same model but two acacia instruments can sound different. Same with any instrument - the question is whether we took two other islanders and did the experiment again whether they would sound the same as these ones? I’m really procrastinating- don’t worry. Thanks for watching
@@MrEricgalBut even the same individual unit of the same instrument model (both WITH a cutaway OR both WITHOUT a cutaway) could sound different… Therefore, how do you know the difference in the sound which you heard of purely due to the fact that there IS a cutaway - as opposed to there NOT BEING a cutway - as opposed to just the fact that there is a difference in the sound in that particular UNIT of the same model, REGARDLESS of whether there happens TO BE or NOT TO BE a cutaway?! One could NEVER KNOW!
@@JJ_TheGreat in which case what’s the point of doing RUclips sound samples? What you’ve saying means that if I order a ukulele on the basis of a sound sample or an online review, even though I order the same make and model as the one reviewed, the Uke delivered to me may sound very different to the one I listened to online. In which case… I should go to a shop and try one for myself… Which, I guess is the best thing to do!

Great information video you guys have done here....
I love your videos; enjoy your humor and insights. Learning so much and you get me laughing. Well done.

Which is why it is easier for some people just to have in-person lessons!

I quit buying instruments with electronics. I now use a detachable pick-up on all my accoustic instruments. Works great!🦋
You guys are simply awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks
Well done chaps. Simply reinforcing the view that SUS is the best in the business.
Coming from a guitar I found a Baritone tuned GCEA was the easiest to adapt to and I love the mellow sound
Absolutely brilliant video. Learned lots by watching. Please do more 👍
11:08 Ah, you are right ahead of me! I am glad you played them… We’ll see if I can hear the differences.
The Takuni has such a pretty shape. Very rounded on the bottom bout.
I had no idea that I had questions until I watched your video. Thanks for posting. 👍🏻
Sweet fingerstyle blues picking Phil.

Oh this must answer my question in the other video🤭
2:19 What about a baritone? Especially if you come from a guitar - since the tuning wouldn’t be a problem!?
You mention lowering the nut grooves, but can you give us a more objective measurement like the height at first fret to the string the way you did at the 12th fret?
As low as possible with clearance from the first fret.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore ah ok so as long as there is clearance that helps. Thank you

Couldn't stop eyeing the red one by Alex's shoulder
I reckon you mean Phil's shoulder and the flea hibiscus uke. Very nice...
@@alexbeds8141 no, meant the red one above Alex's left shoulder. But I like the other one too
Oh my mistake... Not too sure what that it is. I think probably a ruby Ortega.

Yeh, sometimes to view a video so I can see what the comment is about I forget to put my Superman outfit on haha
Hi. Thanks for another interesting video. Does Phil offer online lessons?
Yes he does at ukeswith.com
Great...now I want a true temperament uke. Thanks a bunch! :0)
Since we filmed this video the Uma Ukes were invented and released.
great video
Jared Newbery thank you
I own 2 ukes now. I had no idea you can change the action. I thought that was locked in by brand. Are you changing the bridge and nut to change this?
Yes, that's it. 👍

did you say Phil gave RUclips lessons?
if so would you please give me the link
No we didn’t. We said he can do Skype lessons. Sorry
How do know if a uke is laminate?
Google the spec of the model. It isn't always easy to tell on site alone
Nice sounding uke. But you guys play a little rough. Still loved the video. 😉
😂 no hard feelings about our playing - we do our best. Glad you still liked the video.
