When the air is being pushed through a mountain pass, it is compressed and propelled to high speeds by the air that collides with the mountains on both sides of the pass and gets pushed into the pass. It is possible for the blocked air to climb up over the peaks, but it is subject to gravity which tends to draw it into the passes. If you start with a cyclonic low pressure system that might readily produce 70 mph to 80 mph winds on flat ground, then add elevation and passes, you can get crazy mad wind speeds. Mt. Washington in New Hamshire has an observatory on its peak that has a weather station. The highest recorded wind reading was 231 mph..
Its ridiculous to say the wind speed nowhere near people, they are talking about mountain passes up and over 13k ft not to mention that if you go on noaa you will find that the wind is almost always like that up there and why mountaineering is dangerous.
Gotta sensationalize EVERYTHING in the news. This is CA, it snows, rains and we get high winds in the really high elevations. Yup, I 80 gets closed. Last winter, it was closed a lot. It is idiotic to travel up there now. You can’t even have fun. Give it up till the sun shines and plows can clear thing out.
I think the highest mountain in Palisades is around 9,000'. There isn't a mountain near 13,000' in that area. I know what your post is getting at, but your post is also "ridiculous" in it's exaggeration.
Haha in 2013 a year after I got to ND there was 8 feet of snow then I had to drive home just after it started it was a cold day then and in 2012 it had a 10 foot week look it up from Minot and Williston hwy 2 it's a East and west highway.. from Williston it goes north for 13 miles then east to Minot
my company is forcing me to go through this. wish me luck, told them i didnt feel safe. also cant quit and leave. just had a little one & need the money.
Everybody all knew the future weather forecast for this region, why don't they close the roads in advance of the impending large snowfall especially when all these vehicles get stranded and they have to get towed out. Obviously reroute the truckers& everybody else& don't travel in a major snowstorm, pretty much common sense& logic for all to follow.
Facing whiteout conditions in the Sierras sounds incredibly challenging, but it's also a reminder of the power and beauty of nature in its most extreme forms. For those who are preparing or might be affected, it's important to stay safe and follow all recommended precautions. This could be a time for communities to come together, supporting each other through the difficulties that severe weather can bring. Stay warm and safe, and let's hope for clearer skies ahead.
ARIZONA has MANY roads crossing DRY WASHES. Except sometimes those washes have WATER in them. AZ passed a STUPID MOTORIST LAW where people were CHARGED FOR ANY AND ALL RESCUE EFFORTS while in these not-so-dry washes!!!
"This storm brought to you by your local grocery store! Make sure you stock up!" 2 feet is nothing. That's not a "blizzard." That's hardly a light dusting.

This is winter in the mts in CA. We get snow, wind, blizzards. Stay out of it and wait till it passes. Goodness gracious.
California used to have a "Pioneer spirit", now we have the WOKE TRIGGERED SPIRIT
190mph? From a blizzard? ....how? Thats stronger than a CAT 5 hurricane and almost an F5 tornado? How the heck???

@@Yesquire0 Wow that is so dangerous!

Whoever that Max Gorden guy is... WHAT A CUTIE!!!!!! He needs to be on national tv !
The Climate is changing to colder.
That's gotta upset JOHN KERRY
No, it is not..one blizzard is meaningless.
What is so hard about calling the Sierra Nevada by its proper name. The snow covered saw is what the name implies.
Good point
Wrong sierra definition, real spanish translation is ‘snow covered mountain range’
Sierra means saw
why they call mountain ranges sierra because they look like a saw in profile...you know like I said, implies.
One would think among all the "professional" news staffers someone would eventually realize "Sierra Mountains" is redundant.

Max, I see that the wind is blowing hundreds of knots behind you, do you think you'll survive this epic life-threatening blizzard?
I'm use to that .... I lived in Williston ND for 7 years.. now I live much wormer
I don’t think ND gets 4ft or more snow normally

Foolish people will travel in this without proper clothes and footwear . They will freeze their feet , noses , ears and fingers.
Measures a snow drift, duh. Why not measure where you're walking? Unimpressive?!
it was 6 inches--the rest is media hype, drama looking for fools to watch
