Had Great time there for 2 months while on remand when it was a detention centre many donkeys ago, despite the sadness of the unknown outcome. I did my best and kept my cool and ,at least I used all the facilities there and got many computer certifications before the discovery of the internet and the mobile phones . I loved the Chapel and the Sunday football.
Another great video - and a good choice of music. I enjoyed reading the notes you have included in the description too. Back in the day (the 1970's and 1980's) locals referred to this as a Borstal. Having driven past it many times, I have wondered what was behind the walls/screen... so your video is a revelation. Thanks Ian. 🙏
Thank you Robert I wanted to film it before they either reopen it which means I would not be able to fly near it or demolish it and the place gone forever probably into apartments with a sea view 👍
@@SouthCoastDronesUK it was ok bit tough, but I remember it like it was last year, shame it's not open as a detention centre now the little darlings wouldn't handle it nowadays
I was there in 1976. August to October...... 8 weeks 5 days. I remember Benny Hill. His brother was also a screw there in 76, if I remember rightly their surname was Reeves. I also remember a screw "Chalky" White, he was a little bloke with little man syndrome, a real attitude!
I was there 1981-1982. The parade ground looks to be mostly grassed over in this video. The mile run is still the same though, 11 times around the oval at the back by the loom shop. The vegetable gardens were immaculate, mr Pritchard cycling around on his black post-office cycle. Saturday afternoons were either circuit training on the field, or 44 laps of the football pitch which was 8 miles I think or football, for the green ties, I was in the kitchens after my initial slavery in the loom shop making green bed covers. Then I got in the kitchens cos I was an apprentice butcher. That was much much better. I got 3 months first offence for stealing a moped. I had a job, a good probation report but cos one of the gang pleaded not guilty the magistrates wouldn’t split us and sent us all to Crown court, I’d pleaded guilty but got sent for sentence. The biggest irony was the idiot who pleaded not guilty and got us all sent to Crown, then pleaded guilty and he got probation cos he’d done a Haslar sentence in the summer for other things and judge John Murchie decided to give him a chance. We’d have only got probabtion from the magistrates if he’d pleaded guilty there. I got smacked in the face by Benny Hill on reception then he stabbed me in the chest with a red biro cos I forgot to say sir. Samways giving out slaps on the boy’s bare backs in the ablutions. PT twice a day and again in the evening if you weren’t doing classes. I got fined for dust on my bed frame, apparently I was dirtier than a pig, TVS were there filming at the time. I wasn’t supposed to be on film, I’d refused permission and didn’t sign the form, but I’m on the video anyway . It was a documentary Just Williams HM DETENTION CENTRE HASLAR. . It’s on YT. An update from 1985, the original had more inside video.
@@SouthCoastDronesUK it wasn’t as bad as medomsley DC. Lots of boys were raped by the kitchen screw. I think the Governor of Haslar was dead straight and ran a tight ship. Unfortunately DC didn’t cure me like it didn’t cure 90% of the other boys. In 15 months I ended up in Reading jail then Portland borstal doing 18months. Like most of us we grew up eventually and went straight. The common thread for most seemed to be bad home lives, broken homes. Bizarrely the short sharp shock went on too long at 2 months, if they released us at 2 weeks most would not have reoffended I’m sure. By 2 months it’s dead easy and no deterrent, the shock had passed
@@thpxs0554 i was there in 79, Hartley, Benny Hill, Penguin and Toy soldier are a few of the screws i remember. Plenty of the lads got Abused by the screws.
@@rogerdoherty5669 ah Hartley yes, I forgot about him, he was a nasty bastard. Had me bunny hopping the whole length of the M1 corridor, cos I’d turned my head a bit from straight forwards. The Medical officer punched someone in the forehead who went on sick parade with a headache, then gave him an aspirin for his headache. Just outside the dining room doors in the corridor. What a bizarre place. I was taking food to the hospital wing and a lad who’d had a dorm beating , ( I won’t name him) was just coming out of the hospital and being escorted to the dining room, he saw everyone looking at him through the windows and started shouting he couldn’t go back in there and fell on the floor, there were 3 screws, 2 were kicking him ( not hard) and one was calling him “ a yellow excuse for a man”. I walked past with the tray of food as if nothing were happening. It’s surreal now looking back. There was a Coldstream guardsman doing 3 months, Willis, he was 21, he’d been in Colchester military prison then the civvy judge/magistrate gave him detention, it was a breeze to him, the screws treated him differently, he towered over them, anyway, he disappeared one day, rumour was transfer to adult jail.
Excellent footage of the detention center. Great flight and a nice edit as well!
Thank you 🙂
