I find myself delving into the intricacies as of late, but still enjoy a simple, layman's terms vid like this. I recently started modding pedals and while I don't understand it all yet, I'm fascinated by how different types of diodes, transistors and resistors affect the sound of a pedal.
I actually performed my second modification to a Marshall Guv'nor Plus today. I replaced the LED's in the clipping section of the circuit with 1N4001 diodes. The forum where I found the list of changes credited it to Brian. Apparently from a book that was published some time ago. I'm quite happy with the results and can't wait to try the other mods now.

Distortion = Tube amp breaking up and clipping a lot (only doesn't sound as good, due to lack of tube harmonics)

I absolutely am a fan. What a great product....but.....put out by Dr Wampler, as well as demonstrated and explained by the man himself! Not to mention how open I've heard he is to hearing about new innovations and such.....which makes him even more "transparent". I just can't believe how much I wish I was getting to test these babies out regularly! I've not ventured into the diy stuff myself yet, but as a player I'm really impressed by their approach to tone shaping with every pedal! I've yet to find a bad pedal.....and that says a lot to me as a customer....so thank you.
I do need a new switch in my Ego Comp, so maybe I'll have to try a little diy sooner than later lol. That's my only comp I use gigging and desperately want a Pinnicle deluxe.......but there again I could just get the Hot Wired V2 which is also killer.....arrrrggggh so much tone it turns me into a flapjaw!
I have a cousin that makes pedals outta electric junction boxes.....or wood...or he will buy a pedal and just make the circuit inside.......sigh.....I'm ramblin on again.
My best to you and your family, as well as your business!
    Cheers!
    Adam

Thank you for explanation. When I was younger I also had heard the word "booster" to get this specific kind of sound - is it about the same as 1 of those 3? I also have read that this effect is due to shape of electric signals going to amp and louders - namely e.g. triangular, rectangular and not sinusoidal as in the case of pure signal from the guitar. Am I right or not? Sometimes I got the effect when I set up my amp too loud, then kind of distortion appeared. For me - in this film - the greatest change for harsh sound makes on 1st place - fuzz, 2nd - distortion pedal and the less distorted sound gave the overdrive. It's only my opinion. Regards

Depends on your taste. OD would work very well, too. It also depends on your gear. An OD is very good to boost an almost clean amp into breaking up (that's what the TubeScreamer was designed for- listen to Pride And Joy!). A DS is better in front of a clean amp, so could be your thing if you change from crystal clean to heavy distortion during songs. Or get yourself two OD pedals and boost with one into the other or OD into DS... there are tons of possibilities!! Both Angus Young and Slash get their drive from cranked Marshalls.

Generally, here's how I explain it:
Overdrives: They simulate the sound of a tube amp entering breakup. As a result, they the most natural sounding of all the dirt box types. They achieve this via soft clipping. The classic example is the Tube Screamer, and my personal favorite, the Airis Effects Savage Drive, which clips naturally because it has no clipping diodes in its circuit, which is interesting. :)
Distortions: They sound much more harsh and crunchy than an overdrive. They achieve this by either stacking multiple overdriven elements into each other, or via hard clipping. Classic examples are the ProCo Rat, the Boss DS-1, and such.
Fuzz: Pretty much a distortion out of control. They achieve this by using transistors. Classic examples are the Fuzzface, Fuzz Factory, the Big Muff Pi, and my personal favorite, the Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh.

I don't know if this is still the case, but those HRD's used to be deliberately underbiased at the factory (i.e. they ran them too hot, cooking the tubes). I guess that was Fender's way of idiot-proofing the harmonic output so they'd sell after being demo'ed at the store.

  • @gandalfgrey91

I noticed that the fuzz has been stepped on the most, and is dirtiest around the knobs, meaning its been used the most. The overdrive also has some wear but less so. The Distortion looks almost new. Is this your order of preference to these types of pedals? Ive been watching a lot of Sherlock lately.

For classic rock, rock, some hard rock, and just for a boost I use an overdrive. For Hard Rock and Metal, I use distortion. Fuzz is just a little harder drive than overdrive but it doesn't color your tone as much as distortion does. At least this is what I understand having used all three types of pedals for a while.

Overdrive is like if you were to turn up the volume of an amp past its decibel level. It's more airy and less gainy. Distortion has more drive and more of chug than overdrive. It has a more dynamic sound

    • @dejongeblondegod
      @dejongeblondegod 7 лет назад +13

it's actually the opposite. distortion is less dynamic. dynamic means that you have a lot of volume difference between soft and hard picking. with distortion pedals you lose a lot of dynamics. an amp is more dynamic when it's clean. and tube amps are more dynamic than digi or solid state amps...

I personally hate distortion pedals, I only own 1, a rat, and I either use it as an od or as a fuzz. I much prefer boosts and ods. I play with an all tube amp right on the edge of break up and I find distortion pedals just introduce additional noise to the floor. I own 5 boosts, 10 od pedals and 9 fuzz pedals. I think I am going to end up owning 25 fuzz pedals before I cull the herd, down to 5, but first I have to know which ones I love more than all the rest. Cheers.

the difference between overdrive and distortion is fluent, imo. nothing really technically, just the amount of clipping going on. A fuzz is for me assymetrical clipping and lots of uneven order harmonics, much like push pull output circuits driven hard. buzzy and sharp.

I kind of like the FZ-3. It's probably not what I'd use, but it's got a really distinct crunchy sound to it, really gravel-y, but still maintaining sustain, rather than rounded out or wooly sounding like a Big Muff. In order to get that sound with other pedals you have to mess with the bias a little more and it tends to make it very velcro-y and gated. So no, not the best fuzz, but it has a pretty neat sound. It's older brother, the FZ-2 was used by David Pajo of Slint. It's all over the album, Spiderland and I've always loved that tone.

you used so bad pedals for the demonstration... you could have used a tubescreamer, a pro co rat and a big muff or a fuzzface for seeing the real difference between the real kind of sound that each type of pedal has

+daigoHR98 I understand your POV, however the SD-1 is a TS derivative, the Ds-1 is a popular distortion as well, and the Boss fuzz is a derivative of a big muff.

big muff is technically more of a distortion than fuzz

some people (as I do) thinks that is a modern fuzz. But that is opinion land. However, Fuzzface would be a better option than boss

The OD and the distortion were fine, but the fuzz didn't really communicate the point you were trying to make. It barely sounded like fuzz....more like distortion with a gas problem.
I have to agree with the comments... This fuzz sucks for this demo.

    They’re all the same.

No, they're not! The circuit inside is the same, but the first one was lame and the last one goes all the way up to 11. AND it was grey, so it must be serious. Yellow is a weak color.

Overdrive is what my truck goes into on highway cruising speed. Distortion is how I see things after having couple too many adult refreshments. Fuzz is what I DON’T want her to have....you know...there.

What I learned from this video: "Overdrive", "Distortion, and "Fuzz" are not engineering terms that have any real meaning. They are, rather, merely marketing terms designed to sell more metal boxes to ignorant young men. This devious marketing ploy has spawned an entire industry devoted to pushing different species of multicolored junk, whereas inside it is always just a gain stage (and sometimes a tone stack).
    MARKETING SEMANTICS TRANSLATED:
Overdrive = Tube amp beginning to break up a little (only doesn't sound as good, due to lack of tube harmonics)
Distortion = Tube amp breaking up and clipping a lot (only doesn't sound as good, due to lack of tube harmonics)
Fuzz = Tube amp gain stage fully saturated, breaking up and clipping the top and bottom ends of the sine wave (only doesn't sound as good, due to lack of tube harmonics)...
