@@MatchesIsme-io2vt Apologies if it has, the Q&A has finished (you can watch the complete video on the channel!), but I'm still taking questions in its comment section, if I haven't already covered yours yet!
The cult of the lightless flame immolating itself and being relegated to minor players by the time Jon becomes Archivist seems to me a commentary on the self-defeating nature of the Desolation. It consumes everything, even its own messiahs will to live. Loss leads to grief and grief can be paralyzing to the point of hopelessness. That hopelessness is the heart of the fear that makes up The Desolation and where it bleeds into The Lonely.
An interesting narrative choice was how we got tons of statements about Agnes, but never one directly from her. This reflects how everything that happened was completely out of her control. She was a messiah but her voice or opinion never mattered. Other avatars get a semblance of a choice, not her. Also, if it wasn't already taken by League of Legends, the Ruination would be a great name for the Desolation
Fitting to her nature as the Burnt on earth, Agnes Montague's life was an empty, meaningless tragedy that did nothing but squander it's own potential and irreparably harm everyone involved.
The only source for the Great Twisting being in 2009 is MAG 126, in which the statement giver is incredibly unreliable. In fact, Deborah had been unknowingly sculpting someone in her basement for some time. Given that she forgets a LOT of things, we can probably assume that she received the letter in 2006 and forgot about it until 2009. I will die on this hill tbh
I think in a narrative standpoint, the desolation should fit truma and hardship, since the desolation's central theme is about pain, this could reflect how characters struggle in stories, the villain destroying the protagonist's home town, school bullies attacking a character and making their life worse, having a tragic backstory, etc, some shows(like kids shows) never have loss but every story no matter the intended audience has pain/hardship in it to create conflict for characters. I think that's my analysis
Personally, I think Eugene Vanderstock was criminally under used, and could have cropped up in at least 2-3 more statements due to his proclivities and total jerk personality. Also I feel that leading up to season 5 the Desolation felt very very under used, however in season 5 some of its domains have triggered certain emotional responses on me that were well triggering (I mean so did the Flesh domain, but that’s dysphoria for you). I will say though that using the desolation for “what could have been” like yeah all the fear cults get knocked down, but we never really see them in recovery. Like the Stranger becomes that kid in high school who peaked and never rebounds, The Desolation is like the kid who peaked, fell and is now figuring out what to do as they wait for their chance. I will say that it’s weird that we never encountered a Slaughter Desolation Realm in season 5. Also I will bring up a point of disagreement. The Prison domain didn’t have elements of the Deaolation. The Eye, The Lonely, The Spiral, The Buried and The Stranger are mentioned on the wiki. My apologies for doing a “well acktually” moment, love your videos as always!
Personally, i think it makes sense that there's no real movement from the Desolation post Agnes, given that Loss is inevitably tried to Grief. The cult centred all their hopes on one person, who subsequently dies in a manner that would disappoint those expectations. Wallowing in grief is as desolate as a burnt and salted landscape.
The Desolation could also be the plot happening to characters, instead of them driving the plot, which leads to more tragic ends, i.e. it is the fate of passive characters The information about it happens in statements, from before the series even started, the main player/avatar we know of, Agnes, has little to no agency and her taking any results in her end With the landlord bit that they seem to fill you can also see that, landlord is a passive occupation and renting is also being subjected to them with little to no choice in the matter, with burning down the place being the one active action we see the landlord take and that too is the end of that story/place Even John getting marked was him letting it happen to him
This also works with the other comment of us never getting a statement from Agnes herself someone else posted, even info about her is passive in the plot
It’s always so fun for me to try and guess what you’re drawing in the first few minutes and then watch your art process. There is a sore lack of tma video essays so having a full SEIRES of them just makes me so happy. Thanks for the awesome work!
I don't think every domain needs an avatar. Smirkes domain had no avatar. I think the domains form around fears the entities had been fed before, so for the furnace domain, it formed around the fear generated by that 1 lightless flame guy who worked in furnace
I really like The Desolation conceptually, but I was kinda disappointment by its execution. Theoretically it covers all sorts of horrifying things (natural disasters, storms, bombings, etc.) but in practice it was just arson. It felt kinda one-note, which ironically left me cold.
It's primarily because the writers did not like writing the desolation, conceptually it is strongly reliant on truma and the things that cause it, torture(though this is a bit slaughter), loss, the destruction of the world you knew, all of these are sensitive and will be controversial if not properly executed
Interesting using loss in it's analysis... personally i think it would be the rising action/initial conflict or transition period. Specifically the part where in the characters have just come out of a conflict but instead of winning they are devistated and have lost alot and have to go hide to heal their wounds If ive used that reference already then... I'm with you in the streatching things
It's kind of tragic and weirdly fitting that what got Agnes is the very thing she's supposed to bring if it makes sense Her hopes of being a human were ruined from the day she was born, obviously, but what really drove the point is her falling in love
I already have a question in the Q&A all about tma but if you see this I would like an answer. So is Agnes's death related to the tree on hill top road that got pulled down in (burnt out) because in (burning desire) Agnes says something about a tree falling but later in the series they say the tree had no effect on her and this has been on my mind for so long.
Huh. I... don't know. I assumed it had something to do with the tree, given her surprise and seeming pain at its fall, but I'm not sure. If I had to guess, I'd say it was a combination of factors, and maybe the tree and her loss of trust in herself were only aspects of what made her decide to return to the Desolation. Good question.

Ooooh, very good point!

I will die on this hill tbh
I'm always excited for the next entities explained.
Same here!

Ah great the weirdos who commit arson with flesh candles are coming back, everybody get your fire extinguishers ready
Their not weirdos just a very intense cult

I've rewatched TMA about 6 times and a prequel with Gertrude never occurred to me until this video and now it's all I want!

Gahhhh. Phenomenal essay, like always!!
Can't wait for more explanations

A vast-desolation statement about targeted category 5 tornados would be cool

yesss my favourite entity
I really hope the next episode is The Buried
Next is Vast, but the Buried is coming VERY soon after
It's kind of tragic and weirdly fitting that what got Agnes is the very thing she's supposed to bring if it makes sense
Her hopes of being a human were ruined from the day she was born, obviously, but what really drove the point is her falling in love
Honestly? The Web beat the Desolation. This is the world where the Desolation is burnt out.

The best entity
The Last Airbender’s been pretty busy
So the fear you feel when you loose your wallet is the desolation.
Mheh...mheheheheh... fire! Ffffffire! Mheheheh.
Fav tma episode?
