    PVA glue is a better alternative to CA for Tolex. It never dries out, and remains flexible. Too much CA glue can cause the repaired area to crack.

      I've used lots of contact cement, epoxy, cyanoacrylate as Brad used, and even PVA (polyvinyl acetate) drywall primer, but didn't know it was available as a glue. Thanks for the tip, and I'll look into it too.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  5 лет назад +3

      If I had the PVA glue onhand, I probably would have used that on the larger areas that were coming away, but I doubt very seriously the CA will EVER come loose again. That's the benefit of using it instead. It doesn't loosen if left in a hot automobile or trailer like PVA will. And the weak point on these is where the diamond pattern overlaps the top of another piece. That's just my thinking on it anyway. I appreciate the comment.

    Looks like Brad has started the Glue Wars ! First off Polyethylene is one of the few things that CA Glue Doesn't Stick to.
    So I have Polyethylene Gloves for CA Glue. For everyone saying use Contact / Ruber etc Glue. Well Both Surfaces must be Clean, which is impossible for these type repairs . Both sides must dry to tact etc. Which adds Thickness, and bulging crappy look. So CA Glue is fine, Roadie's and Sound Men have been using it since it was invented.
    PS I bet none of the Anti CA Glupies have worked in a guitar shop or been a roadie/ guitar / line tech. I've done all that since the 80's, and CA Glue is Tool #1. CA Glue is Tone Glue ! I put that shit on Everything !

    Next time, try washing the tolex with Simple Green and a soft brush and/or lint-free cloth, *before* attempting the CA glue (and I agree that careful application of contact cement would be better). On the grille cloth, try Resolve carpet cleaner (which will clean damned near anything to almost original condition). Again, contact cement around the edges and support struts (hot glue will lift after awhile, especially on any slightly glossy/plastic surface). Good luck! :-)

    I use contact cement to adhere tolex, you can use a little heat like a hairdryer or heat gun on low to make it tack faster and soften the vinyl a little. Cleans up with a little paint thinner. I also use Mr Clean and a scrub brush to clean , keep a bowl of clean water to rinse and dry off as you go. Just my 2 cents, Looks and sounds good Brad!

  • @chriswareham
    @chriswareham 5 лет назад +3

    My trick for amp and speaker cabinet cleaning is a nail brush and hand soap in a little warm water. For gluing rips and lifted edges I use wood glue, and for restoring the colour on black tolex I then use liquid shoe polish, the kind that has a foam applicator. Then I buff it with a soft cloth.
    Those "carpet" finishes like the ones on SWR and old Trace Elliot cabinets are a nightmare though - especially with my three cats using them as scratch posts...

  • @scott729
    @scott729 5 лет назад +1

    I know you have eleventy-million suggestions, but try this one ... Make a solution of walmart brand (or any brand at half price) of oxy-clean with warm water. Use it to scrub the tolex, but as far as the grill cloth, soak a few hours or even better overnight. You will be surprised of the results ...

  • @pauljs75
    @pauljs75 5 лет назад +1

    Sometimes rubber cement type glues might be better than the cyano-acrylate "super glue" stuff. Doesn't get brittle in relation to any flexing, and perhaps more tolerant of textured surfaces. Get a thin coat of it on both sides, wait a few minutes for it to almost dry but still tacky. It'll stick to itself like nothing else. (Best to get that right the first time, good luck getting it apart.) There's also spray versions which are really good at adhering fabrics to anything as well. (Used that on some car interior stuff, and it holds for years.)
    For cloth, you could get one of those plastic storage tubs, and use laundry detergent. Might work a bit better than dish soap. If you think it's more of a plastic material, than natural, Zep 505 will get that tobacco crap out of there - a brief soaking and that rinses right off.

    • @douro20
      @douro20 5 лет назад +1

      Not to mention you also have to be careful you're not applying CA to cotton or rayon since it reacts exothermically with cellulose.

  • @sincerelyyours7538
    @sincerelyyours7538 5 лет назад +1

    Sounds great! I wish I could play the guitar but my fingers don't bend like they used to. About the cabinet, first, CA glue cures using the moisture in the bond area. Too much moisture and it won't bond well. The white stuff is the glue reacting a bit too quickly and "boiling", which leaves a white residue. Also, any hobby shop or woodworker supply can sell you an accelerator spray that will instantly cure CA glue. Baking soda will do it too, but the bond may not be very strong and it looks unsightly. Finally, although you did a fine job with what you had, if it were up to me I think I would have given the cabinet a new set of clothes to go with the repaired and updated insides. Of course it depends on what you think the customer wants more than anything else.

    As a veteran of tolexing 1000’s of cases and cabs (including that Ampeg Diamond stuff) I submit: “the heat gun is your best friend”

  • @DeadKoby

    I prefer contact cement for Tolex, but I have used super glue for small spots. Nail polish (black) works well to touch up a ding. I've cleaned filthy amps before by taking out the speaker, and the hardware... Then outside they go to the garden hose. A good scrub with LA's awesome cleaner really gets the crud out. It even works on the super rough Peavey Tolex. My Peavey Encore video is a good before/after of that cleanup process.

    • @5018jamesb
      @5018jamesb 5 лет назад

      Tightbond Original works well on Tolex but that's just me. It's just tacky enough and you don't have to hold it down that long. Also for cleaning I like dish soap fairly strongly mixed with warm water and a stiff bristle brush to get down into whatever pattern you're working on, pretty much like you're doing only toothbrush is just too small and takes forever. Then rinse with a warm terry towel, not dripping wet but almost, and use a bucket of warm water to keep washing out the towel. A stiff nail brush is great but surprisingly hard to find. Again just me but I've done a lot of them. Often you think your really getting it clean but then when it dries looks just the same. Drat! Dish soap is the ticket!

    I've used Gorilla wood glue on tolex repairs with good results. It cleans up with water and it doesn't leave the white residue of Superglue if you get it on a surface that shows. When I do use Superglue type glues, I get the containers of it at a beauty supply place for putting on fake nails. It's cheap, doesn't dry out and has a brush in the lid like nail polish. it's a lot easier to apply that way. : )

    • @valvenator
      @valvenator 5 лет назад

      Gorilla Super Glue is awesome, it's made with rubber and stays flexible.
      I used it to repair the sole of a shoe and it stayed together for well over a year, even with all the FLEXing.
      BTW, store your superglue in the fridge and it will last for years on end without drying out.

    I've had pretty good luck cleaning grill cloth with automotive spray fabric cleaner (or in tough cases cases, auto rug cleaner) and a shop vacuum. "Tough Stuff" is my favorite. Depending on the grill cloths ruggedness and weave, "brushing it in" during cleaning varies from no brushing to light brushing. I never use the plastic brush on the cap, it's too stiff for grill cloth. One of those cheap, disposable paint brushes works pretty well, especially if you cut the bristles shorter, to about 1 inch long.... to stiffen it a little.

    Brad just use blue masking tape to pull the material into place and after the glue has set peel it off back slowly so to avoid puling the material off. I have used this technique for years. It works great even on small rips and tears as well.

I lost my Google account when I lost my phone, so now I'm on my mom's tablet on her Google account, hence the woman's name on this post. I used a little refined almond oil ( like coconut oil) by accident on the tolex of an old dirty Crate GX-15 from the 90's that had never been cleaned, and it made it shine like brand new. Git you a bottle of that stuff, and try it. A little bottle should last you decades. Simply Balanced is the brand I used, and used a cotton ball to rub it in. It works super well.

    I recently had a late 60's Acoustic 150 head and matching 4x12 cab given to me by an old friend that was just hanging around his garages and workshops every where he moved for the last 40+ years or so. The black tolex was coming loose in several places and multiple layers of dust, sawdust and over spray from painting his last garage/workshop all over it. I tried a stiff brush and soapy water to no avail. So I went through my wife's cleaning supplies. Murphy's oil soap and a stiff bristle brush was the answer. Well, a lot of elbow grease also! I used hot glue to reattach any loose tolex. The Murphy's soap not only cleans but conditions the tolex if it's very dry. That stuff is made to clean car seats, furniture, dash boards, etc. I would try it in an inconspicuous area first.

Product is designed to re-coat faded black plastic and rubber moldings on a car. Auto Detailers use it and so do I on Fender tolex and Peavey type amps. It is not a paint, but goes on like paint. Think of it as like a coverage like thin liquid electrical tape... That is if you are looking for a like new restore look. -No brush strokes!
    For grill cloth, (This varies since not all grill cloths can be removed without taking staples out!)
    I use 3 spray bottles. I first remove the intact Grill cloth baffle assembly from the Amp (If you can?)...(Bottle #1 Use an cold water enzyme like Urine RX available at Pet Stores or similar enzyme liquid) Spray and saturate the grill cloth and let it sit for 20 minutes or longer. Enzymes will break down some protein-based stains and oils. If an amp smells moldy like its been in someones damp basement, I'll spray the enzyme on the wood and all over the amp interior area let it dry. Later spray vinegar 1:1 mixed with water. It will not smell like "basement " anymore after treatment!
    Reapply and repeat.
    Next take Bottle #2 (Diluted All purpose cleaner. Simple Green) and here is why the spray bottles works..Squeeze the trigger real hard and close to the grill cloth and "jet" the sprayer like a mini power-washer! Make sure it is a good spray trigger!! Test how close you can go with the sprayer to avoid any damage to cloth. Closer the better! You're using the spray as an agitator vs. a brush which is tricky on a grill cloth surface. The jet effect will agitate the grill cloth surface!
    Reapply and repeat
    Next Bottle #3 is simply water to spray the soapy cleaner out of the cloth. Spray gently as "harsh" spraying is only generating suds! Dry with a fan or put outside in sunny breezy day! grill cloth may shrink.
    Try not to get the wood baffle supporting the grill cloth too wet and jet the solutions from the speaker side out and or be real careful regarding the wood
    *Buy a WEN pneumatic 1/4" stapler available at Home Depot or eBay ($38 w/shipping) to put back the 1/4" crown staples back. You wont use the glue gun much after you purchase!

    Very cool. When I was a kid I had an early 60's Ampeg B15-XY. I ended up tracking down one of the guys that helped design it so I could get some schematics. I still remember that black vinyl material. The B15-XY was a monster designed for guitar and achordian. In the 90's I would use a Heughs & Ketner Cream Machine for the preamp. The 15" gave it great low end and it also had a couple of mids and a horn. Sold it for dirt during a nasty divorce...On a bright note, I no longer have back issues, that thing weighed a ton.

    Just got me a 1964 Ampeg Jet J-12 20-Watt Combo Blue Check , can't wait to try it out , i clean my amps with (Tuff Stuff) , it works wonders , i do the processes 2 to 3 times depending on the dirt it has , once i am done cleaning i have found that the Tire shine spray (EVER WET) also works wonders to give it that brand new look , i do this with old guitar cases too , try it out you will see good results , Alfred NYC / PR

    I dig the guitar playing... maybe you can do some more...
    For the tolex reglue job i recommend 'neopren' 'contact' 'cement' glue, at least for the larger flaps. Not more forgiving but nicer and much stronger and less brittle.
    CA still for the details.
    Tolex cleaning... no BoBo Chemicals baking soda. Soap in warm water. sparingly. Soft brush. Windex also can do.
    The grill cloth laundering is a great idea with nice results. Maybe you do it safe. More clean may look odd..

    I found an early 60s Gretch small combo amp covered in mud in a pile of trash after a flood. As an amp, it was pretty much destroyed so I took out the speaker, clipped out the guts and took it to a carwash. Power washed it. put some red fabric in as grill cloth and it makes a great small (1/15") speaker cab. The vinyl looks great!.

    Brad, something that will make your life easier when doing tolex repairs with SGlue. Tools: Heatgun (HarborFreight cheapy), piece of 1x1 cut to fit between the corner protecters, super glue gel type and a bar clamp or two. Heat up the tolex to get it a little more pliable, a little gel super glue behind the tolex, press into place, wiping the excess up with a clean cloth along the entire length (doesn't matter if it sticks just yet), place the 1x1 over the glued seam and clamp in place for about 30 minutes. The gel glue will fill in around the diamond ridges to spread out the adhesion area.

    Brad, Mr.Clean has a product that works really well for cleaning just about everything. It does not contain harsh astringents,but, it works well for Amps and such .It comes in a sponge type thing .I believe you may really like it instead of a tooth brush.My wife turned me on to it for cleaning ,of course.

    At my shop when I clean Guitar amps I have a cheap scrub brush and cheap foaming bubbles I scrub them when I have the unit apart. The scrub brush gets in to the crack in the material and the foam lifts the dirt. I buy my supplies from the dollars store they have cheap super glue and cleaners.. I like to use 3M spray on contact cement for the grill cloth (I hate hot glue) spray it on the wood and let it get tacky and then add grill cloth.

    I have a question . I have a Fender champion 40 watt. When I got received the amp it was perfect, but the head got almost hot enough to catch on fire. When I upgraded the speaker to a Jensen Mod 50 watt the head stayed cool and I have had no problems with it . What was the cause that the original speaker ( it is a Fender special design 40 watt 8 ohm )made the head hot?

    Washing it's not a problem. The key is putting a couple of tennis shoes in with it when it goes in the dryer on low heat. Otherwise your 15" speaker ends up being an 8".

    'Bloom' is a bastard with all cyano glues, in a moist environment, id stick with a good contact glue, although on some plastic coverings that get old and stiff it can be difficult to get those close fitting flush edges to stay down, and worst is as soon as the amp might get in some warm weather it starts lifting off, the cyano is probably the best bet, its never gonna come off again

    Recently I got the super glue kit, 3 viscosities + accelerator spray. I already made a couple repairs. It cures instantly with the accelerator and doesn't stink. Highly recommended.
    Super glue cures with moisture (go figure) so breathing on normal super glue makes it go faster. Already tried and the difference is dramatic.
    BTW: THat's your voice on the song, right?

  • @jasonwaters8290

    super glue is an "anaerobic adhesive" .... it'll harden allot faster if you hold it longer because the hardening is started by the absence of air (anaerobic) ...
