    Karue put out a video a while back talking about the "knock off volley" or something like that. Basically intentionally hitting a short volley that just dies being more effective in singles and gave a bunch of examples of Raonic hitting it. Really changed the net game for me, starting winning way more points coming forward bc I wasn't focused on hitting crazy angles and/or crazy power. The shittier the volley the better almost lol

    1) Against the wall you were probably the the most “Continental” grip wise that you ever were. At 7:16 you hit a short series of alternating backhand/forehand volleys. It’s almost impossible to do this exercise without using a Continental grip. Right after you observe that there are forearm muscles that are cramping because you rarely use them. It’s not because you’ve never volleyed before, it because it’s you’ve never volleyed using a Continental grip. (Plus the rapidity of the hits per minute) During the match the grip reverted a little back towards the old eastern forehand grip. The other problem this leads to is that you don’t change your grip for overheads and end up hitting them using that slight eastern forehand grip. Which is ridiculous for someone who hits his serve using a Continental grip. Pay attention to your grip, a few degrees of rotation may seem like a small thing but it’s critical to get it. right. If in the beginning it feels totally comfortable you’ve probably reverted to the forehand grip. 2) Please stop worshipping Kyrgios. He’s probably screwed the development of more beginners than any other pro. I’m not saying he’s fundamentally flawed but his game depends highly on a great deal of raw talent. He emphasizes shots that don’t lead to good habits in mere mortals. Plus he’s not worthy of the worship he gets from beginners, amazingly overrated, no singles slams, never top 10 rated. Watch some old matches of Ramesh Krishnan and Leander Paes. Both so smooth, simple and efficient volleyers. It’s the real life version of the movie Kung Fu Master who barely moves while sending guys flying across the room. 3) As a volley training tool I’d suggest you try going in the opposite direction of the wood racket. Take out a true oversized racket (107). Often when you miss hit a volley it’s not because of poor hand eye coordination. It’s usually because of poor positioning, preparation technique and footwork. The oversized racket will free up some brain cells to concentrate on these other very important aspects of the volley. After improving these things volleying with a smaller head size will be easier. 4) A big part of being a good volleyer is anticipation. Unfortunately this mostly comes with experience. But even with the passage of time if you don’t make a effort to pay attention to what usually happens in various situations good anticipation will not develop.

    Definitely improved throughout the week. A few things I noticed is that you practiced close to the service line but in the match you volley close to the net. You should be practicing closer to the net in the future.
    On the same note, you want to try to take the ball while it’s still above the net. If you let the ball drop below the net, you have to arc it over the net which will put the ball near the base line and give your opponent time to respond.
    Focus on taking the balls above the net, ideally the ball should land before the service line, and use angles to make them harder to return.
    Keep up the good work!

    It feels like you got a little stitched up practicing volleying at the service line which is a bit of no man’s land. In your match you were taking a lot of the volleys half way between the service line and net.
    What it looks like is your opponent was hitting extremely short balls with a lot of spin so they dived down at the net, which you didn’t have practice against. He’s doing that to stop you from being able to hit down into the court with power. How you were responding was to still try and hit balls near the baseline, but you’re hitting up so it’s either going long or landing and bouncing up for an easy sitter.
    In that situation it’s more effective to take the pace off the ball and do a short touch shot that’s lands way inside the service line near the net, he will have to run in, will likely be stretching have to hit up to get it over the net and you will be in a position to put it away, if they get to it.
    Instead of watching Kyrgios put away a watch Alcaraz who actually has a really good volley game. Look up a video called ‘Carlos Alcaraz - Insane Net Game! (World Class Volleys)’ and watch where he is putting the ball most of the time. It’s short and angled
    Also it’s hard to tell as we don’t see most of your shots in practice, but it sometimes looks like you try to move around the shot to hit forehand volleys?
    In my experience for balls that are coming at the body it’s better to just take a small step to the right and hit a backhand volley in front of your body. It’s a stronger movement.

  • @skater24tjp
    @skater24tjp Месяц назад +1

    You only need to scoop / slice the volley if you’re getting to the ball low below the net to pop it over to the other side. The scoop/slice you’re doing is giving the ball too much hang time for an easy return from baseline or net.
    You’re also standing too far back in your drills. You should play the net halfway between the net and service line.
    Ideally you get to the volley at chest level with some forward momentum.
    You wanna hit the ball low, making it harder to return for your opponent.

    Hey, sorry yet another other comment critiquing your volleys. Ready position is super important, think elbows forward and raised. Then you need to reduce the amount you step across with the opposite foot, first move is step out with outside foot towards ball then you can step forward and across with opposite foot. Then swing path is super important, racquet starts outside of centre line and travels toward centre line of body during swing. Lastly don't try to close the racquet face during a volley, instead think high to low swingpath on any balls that are above net height, this controls the trajectory of the ball off the (somewhat) open racquet face that a continental grip creates. Love your vids man

  • @k3suk3
    @k3suk3 Месяц назад +22

    Man, it's your forehand. The backhand is looking ok, but your forehand looks like you're chasing a mosquito or something. It's too much in front of you and should be sideways, your elbow pointing down and racket slightly up. Sometimes your racket head is lower than your elbow or your arm is stretched forward and it's not bent at all.

      @k3suk3 Месяц назад +5

      @@Winners-Only hey man, that's my bad, let me try again. Let me try to use your match volleys on this video, to explain what I mean.
      Your backhand volley 1/4 has a pretty good form, your body is sideways, heels first, arm slightly bent. Your forehand volley (which are the ones that need more help) 3/9 and 5/12 you're not sideways and when you're about to strike the ball you over stretch your arm and then you completely lose control. Probably the best forehand form was 7/15 but you still gave that last stretch when you were about to strike the ball. If you want more power you should move your entire arm like you did at 2/7 where you didn't stretch your arm completely, so the ball had power and didn't go up.
      That's my 2 cents, I hope you read this because I always like to see your game improving.

    • @k3suk3
      @k3suk3 Месяц назад +3

      @@Winners-Only Yeah, you did talk about that for sure, I think you're just missing the part where you almost try to "tap" the ball right before striking it. That's making you lose a lot of control. I saw someone bellow saying that you should try to kill the pace like Alcaraz does when the ball has no momentum, he's right. When the ball is coming slow or short, you don't try to add pace with your volley, you need a lot of control in order to do that, you better place the ball short. In order to do this and keep control, you don't do that last forearm "tap" on the ball, you use your entire arm to keep the control.
      I think 7/15 is the key to make it work - good form, but almost sent the ball flying because of that last second forearm tap. That's the ball where you just have to kill the speed completely
      It's a lot of text, sorry for that man. I hope this helps

    • @timothywhiting1836

      I’m the guy mentioned below so I might jump in on top of this good advice.
      In a more meta way think about what you’re trying to achieve with your volley. It’s a higher risk shot meant to make your opponent extremely uncomfortable to force errors. Either by taking away time for them to react or making them run somewhere out of their comfort zone. When you’re putting up floaters at his feet or in the corners you would have got a better quality shot just hitting an average shot from the baseline.
      The first volley you won worked because it was short, stayed low and put him out of his way rhythm. It wasn’t that amazing of a shot but it was effective enough because you made him have to run some where he usually wouldn’t have.
      Later you seemed to be aiming in the corners but the shots look pretty slow and you’re slicing them so they float a bit. That’s just putting your opponent in the best possible position with an easy shot to do a passing shot down the line.
      If you’re going to hit there do it when the ball is coming at you higher so you can drive down into the court (not swing). At the moment it looks more like you are trying to cup the ball and put some slice on it so it falls back down into the court. You don’t want your volley shots to float.
      What might help a lot would be to go play some doubles matches with some good volleyers. You’ll get a lot more opportunities to practice, but you can also see how others are hitting the ball and make you uncomfortable.

    Personally, I don't think it makes sense to seriously train with anything but your real racquet. It's like those navy seals that say their gun is a part of them because they've used it exclusively since day one. Practice with what you actually use in a match would be my unsolicited advice.

  • @TennisReboot
    @TennisReboot Месяц назад +3

    Your volleys are so much better, your self one is still being negative. Your approach shot selection is not good. You want to mostly approach in front of you not cross-court. Watch some videos on the geometry of the court at the net vs baseline to see why.

  • @valeriomorreale6987
    @valeriomorreale6987 Месяц назад

    I think you should aim to hit the forehand volleys more in front of you, with a straighter arm instead of more on the side of your body with bent arm and more motion from back to front as i think i find you to be doing. And also maybe there's something with how you grip the racket when hitting that feels too much on the open side, too western, i think for forehand volleys a more cutting motion of the plane of the racket, more on a continental/eastern direction can be more incisive and direct to hit.

    Lead to the target from high to low with the bottom edge of the racket and pop it, the punch idea is ok but not full. You want to finish those points not tap it back into neutral/defensive.

Let your body do more of the work. If you can time your step with your lead foot at the exact moment u contact that’s ball that helps big time. Your trying to hit low Volleys from the service line.
