Our Story:
My name is Ed, I am an ex-muscian, turned politician, turned tax account, who now imagines himself a sea-captain. Lyn, is an ex-model, turned photographer and the love of my life.
We have spent the last three years traveling on our 65' Hatteras Yacht and it has been terrifying. We have faced down storms, been stranded at sea, towed off shoals and run aground by careless boaters.
But it has been magical as well. We have explored places known only by those who travel by water, met incredible people along the way, and learned so much about boating - and even more about ourselves.
And to think - until three years ago, Lyn, and I, never even owned a boat.
We met when we were 21. I was a starving musician, on my way To Los Angeles to starve some more. Lyn was a model, waitressing tables and dreaming of adventure. We went on our first date to the Jersey Shore, and spent the night on a boat her father was restoring. That date has never ended.
We traveled the country together, and settled for a few years in Hollywood, where she discovered her love for photography, and I discovered that music was not going to be my career. We put down roots in Bucks County Pennsylvania. We built a house together, raised three children and became your typical American family. She opened a photography business and I opened an accounting firm.
On a vacation to Key West, we met a woman who lived on her boat. She had been an emergency room nurse for many years but decided she had had enough. She sold everything, bought a boat and sailed to Florida. We were fascinated. It seemed so romantic, so us. The seed was planted.
Flash forward a few years and the children are grown. Lyn retired from photography and sold her business. And me, well, I was only working three months out of the year and looking for a new adventure.
So, we bought our first boat. A Carver 355. No experience, and completely clueless. We hired a captain to bring us to our local marina and we were determined to learn how to operate her. We practiced in an empty marina for a couple of days and then, we just went for it! We figured, if we liked boating as much as we imagined, we would trade up to our dream boat. Two years later we did just that.
This video vlog is our story. Boating has become our passion. We invite you to share this journey with us, as we explore the waterways of the Atlantic and Carribean, having the time of our lives, while "Trying Not To Sink."
Cheers!
Ed and Lyn.
Thank you for Sharing this visit. They are a very nice couple I enjoyed the tour as well. 😀🛫
Our pleasure!
As an engineer and flight instructor who's also a musician, with a childhood of indentured servitude on various sail and power yachts thanks to my folks; I salute you both! I may just get back into yacht-ventures despite my scarred childhood thanks to your channel. Much love&happiness to you.
Thanks for watching. We are glad you enjoyed the videos. Hope to see you on the water.
A lovely, articulate couple and you guys have real interviewing chops.
Thanks. We had fun making the video.
Great meeting you and chatting on the dock. You guys rock! Mark on Meadow has my contact info. Always wonderful keeping in touch with our fellow East Coast boaters.
It was great meeting you as well. I enjoyed our conversation. Good luck with your channel!
Roger out! A very nice use of space on that boat. By forgoing an extra head and an extra cabin there is so much living space on a boat that size.
We agree. It is a great layout for a cruising couple.
I followed your inspiration and went ahead and bought a land yacht (45' bus.) Thanks!
That is awesome!
Great interview.. everyone has a story.. hope to see more of these in the future 👍👍 love the classic style of the Mainship trawler
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow ! Congratulations on your travels !
Thanks!
Great video. Definitely a nice trawler for sure. Great winds at your backs, calm seas at your front, and all the water under your feet.
Thanks 👍 It is a very nice Trawler.
That was great! Would love to see you interview more people about what you do!
Love Sherri's "Thin Blue Line" bracelet!
Great boat. This is exactly what I’m looking for.
Good choice! It is a great layout for a cruising couple.
You have friends who have a Boat with two Doggies ! Great to see a different side of Trying Not To Sink
Thanks! It was fun to do.
Awesome Vlog enjoyed seeing others like you both doing much the same thing that's pretty cool thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Very interesting... thanks to you and Mark and Sherri.
Last summer we stayed on a Carver 355 at Penns Landing. I'm pretty certain that we were in the slip next to your Hatteras. I call that the Airbnb that changed our lives. We're in the process of researching trawlers now to get one of our own.
That would have been my Carver. The one I sold a few months ago.
That's what my wife said. We had a reservation to stay on it again earlier this summer but had to cancel due to the pandemic.
Probably 15 years ago I stayed at that hotel right behind your mooring. Toured the Olympia and the Gato class sub (which was closing so they let us have the run of it to ourselves). The USS New Jersey was anchored out in the River. I went to am meeting at the Masonic Hall downtown. The police gave me a ride back to the hotel. I ordered a burger from room service. Anything under well done had been illegal here in Ontario for a decade then. When they asked me how I wanted my burger cooked I was delighted. That medium rare burger, silly as it sounds, was a highlight.
All that stuff is still here, even the medium rare burger!
Nice layout of the boat. Great for two or three sailors.
We agree!
I loved it!
I am in the prepurchase phase and find this informative . The Cost of ownership was quite eye opening. I do have a non ownership question. What is the Ship of the line tied up behind your yacht, looks like a she was part of the Great White Fleet and just pre-dreadnought .
The Olympia and the Moshulu are tied up behind out boat.
The Mainship sometimes doesn't get the love but this is a gorgeous (big) boat. I'm also coming from the sailing world and am looking for a move to trawler life and great loop one day. Speaking of, I've noticed some locks still being maintained here in Illinois.
We agree! It is perfect for a cruising couple who do not plan on having a lot of guests. In our case, Lyn wanted a boat big enough to have our three children, and mates, onboard.
nice people, nice boat. 👍👍👍
Yes they are!
I really like the 43' without the aft cabin. Great upload.
Me too!
This is a great idea if you live nearer to the equator than the 45 th N Paralell. Winter here would not be comfortable on a boat. One must also have a winter haven in which to keep warm. From spring break-up to fall freeze-up, hey, go for it. A small 2 bed condo or apt. will be needed. We have no interest in going South for the winter and never have had that desire. Canada has so much to see by water or land that in your entire lifetime you would not see it all.
One of these days we will take the boat up to Canada. Probably in a few years.
Great video, really enjoyed the content! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
I would love to do this.
From Canada...boating generally is much more expensive....fuel, moorage at marinas. Luckily here on the west coast of BC we have so many opportunities to anchor, when home work is done, and minimize costs to enjoy environment. Seafood is in abundance here. As a senior my fishing licence is only $47/year. I can fish for salmon. halibut or ling cod by simply making the effort. The topper is of course the freedom to roam without fear of pirates or unwanted human intrusion, if you choose to accommodate your wants/needs. Cheers, keep it up. ooops!
Thanks for watching. Sounds like a great area to boat. Accept for the short season I suppose.
What’s the make/model of that cool little video camera Lyn is using? Thanks!
We use a DJI Pocket and a DJI Action Cam, as well as a Lumix G85.
Nice!
cold crap northern Ireland I'm so jealous...enjoy folks
Great video, thanks for sharing. I used to be. a broker for a Mainship dealer. I always liked that model. Quick note big difference in the Osmo pocket video and go pro. Osmo made a better picture. Thanks for the great work.
It seems we might have had the stabilizer turned off on the Go Pro type camera. We were definitely disappointed with how it came out. It is a nice boat and the layout is great for a cruising couple.
Trying Not To Sink it is alot of work and love it the channel. I own both I love them both( Osmo and GoPro). Thanks again and great editing on the two camera shoot.
wow boat is from my home town
What's the steps to obtaining insurance on a 40 through 43 foot trawler if you never had any boating experience except on small boats?
cool stuff. I presently looking for a Nordhavn to do the loop/cruise etc. I was told the draft has to be 5' or less so that a been bit of an issue with Nordhavns
Also has to be under 19' air draft to get under the one bridge near Chicago
Thanks for watching!
Great video, Rodger out Beautiful 😅❤️
Glad you enjoyed
I Love Penns Landing at Philadelphia. I’ve lived in Philly my whole life and live this channel and video. I dream one day to live in a boat and def think Philly could be my “home” dock
It is a great place for a home dock! We love it.
Who was the builder of this boat ?
Questions.. where do the dogs do their business while on the water for hours and hours?
Many people put out a piece of lawn turf on the swim platform.
Need a plan, good luck
Philadelphia, a nice little city!
The most dangerous, or close to the most dangerous city in the US.
It’s not a good place to be,, maybe out in the water!
very nice
Thanks
Great info and video. Kill the music though, it interferes with the dialogue.
Still like your vids just the same.
I wouldn't go near the Gulf Coast right now
I lived in Philadelphia and it’s a crap hole.. they are in a nice area Penns landing on the river, but take a ride around the city and you’ll see what I mean
Did I miss it or did they say what year their boat is?
I do not recall.
Great video! Do you know where the dogs went potty at? I might have missed it on the video...
Not sure
@@tryingnottosink9107 was hoping the owners would see this eventually
@@garypoltonowicz7950 sorry for the delay - we usually take them to shore twice a day. However, we do have a "porch potty" which consists of a patch of artificial grass in a lifted tray and a hose attachment, so it can drain.
@@sherririnkel10 thanks for the reply. We actually use a subscription service called fresh patch. They send us real grass every few weeks, we put it in our cockpit and throw it out when it starts to die. She uses it religiously and we don’t have to take her to land… super convenient
What is that ship behind you?
Olympia
OH, one more thing. I was watching this video and a friend of mine asked, "What are you watching?" I said some friends of mine that are on a boat. LOL, then I thought, I've never really met these people!
It is funny. We often meet people who follow our videos and they know so much about us, yet we know nothing about them. It makes for interesting conversation.
Okay, now I show my laziness 😁 “where’s my link to check out their blog”
I added it to the comments section just after this post.
Ok, I'll be two.
Where did you get the cup/drink holders? What brand ?
They were not ours.
they came with the boat
I give them 3 to 4 years. They are happy now. Yet the most happiness will began when they sell it. Ha ha.
ha! for sure there are rough days, but the good days by far outweigh the bad days.
@@sherririnkel10 Funny my reply disappeared. If all you do is live on it in marina slip and don't travel the world For me that's a waste. I go on charter yachts or small cruise ships (less than 100 to 200 folks) with service. My future plans Antarctica, Caribbean, Mediterranean, French Rivera, Northeast during Fall, North West Alaska. River and Cannel cruises in Europe are Aldo interesting. Each cruise about $5K to $15k and day cruises in Hawaii. I'm going to be spending tens of thousands on these cruises, so worth it. Way less than owning your own boat.
IS THAT THE BTTLESHIP OLYMPIA BEHIND YOU?
Yes.
how do you get slip near the Olympia?
There are transient slips but getting a seasonal slip is difficult. There is high demand and very few slips in Philly right now because the biggest marina was bought out and closed two years ago.
It's rude to ignore someone's very well behaved dogs, especially after the owners introduced them to you!
Not all interactions end up on video.
Curious if anyone knows what the salon and stateroom headroom is?
What the hell difference does it make? It's his boat, not yours. What an asinine, puerile, snipe.
@@servicarrider take it easy buddy. This boat is on my short list and I am researching. Have not been on it yet. Just a simple question.
Additionally I'm 6'5". So it does make a difference!
@@servicarrider So, you snipe at the guy for asking an honest question and accuse him? What an idiot. Thx for showing us all what an ignorant ass you are.
I do not know the answer but if you add a comment on their blog I am sure they will answer it.
Wearing shoes visiting another boat (boat etiquette)???
Believe it or not, plenty of people don't mind. I take them off automatically if nothing else than to spare them the hassle of asking me to do so. If told I can leave them on, I make an effort to thoroughly brush the soles off overboard before going any further.
First...comments to come later...Ed
We had a Five Year plan as well... it turned into a twenty year plan and now it looks like a thirty year plan...
Make a 30 year plan and perhaps it will turn into a five!
Unwatchable
Pretty boring just watching you have conversations and a sort of boat tour... better step it up if you want subscribers
They have subs, who are you to tell them how to run their channel?! You don't even have any videos! You better step it up!
@@hotrodhog2170 Who are you "hotdog"...the channel protector and muter of free speech...douche ; \
