  • A documentary narrator talks about dangerous charged particles in the "Van Halen Belt". Clearly confusing it with the Van Allen Radiation Belt.
The Van Allen Radiation Belt is composed of two torus-shaped layers of energetic charged particles (plasma) around the planet Earth, held in place by its magnetic field. The belts are a hazard for artificial satellites and would damage the instruments of the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory, if it was being kept switched on while crossing the Van Allen Radiation Belt.
The XMM-Newton is an X-ray space telescope launched by ESA in December 1999. It moves in an elliptical path around the earth, therefore spending as little time as possible inside the Van ALLEN Radiation Belt.
This clip is takes from a short feature on Euronews "XMM Newton: unveiling the universe" which can be seen here: • XMM Newton: unveiling ...
