There is an issue with version 1.19 of balena etcher. Until it’s fixed, you’ll need to download earlier 1.18 version if you want to follow this guide
Still didn’t work for me…please help
Went back to an even earlier build of 18 but now when I went to flash it tells me failed target with an error message saying einval: invalid argument, open ‘/dev/sda’
You say to use an earlier version, but the website doesnt allow you to do that. Awesome guide, thanks for wasting everyones time
@@AbatedFawn prior versions can be found here github.com/balena-io/etcher/releases
I found somebody on Reddit that suggested a code that I can’t remember but it essentially reformatted my ssd even though there was nothing on it…ended up doing it through Konsole which took over a day but eventually got done. Thanks for the guide.
I don't understand that this guy did this tutorial for 8 min but other content creators does a video for over 20min?! He has my vote, great job!
PERFECT guide! Thank you so much
This should have way more views its most hassle free way to do it and keep the games and settings same.
Thanks appreciate the feedback!
Just followed your steps and it works perfectly. Thanks man
I tried a few guides. This one was the best.
Phew, I was really afraid that you quit making vids. And now you're coming out of nowhere with a vid regarding exactly what I was going to do next. I ordered the Sabrent 1tb ssd just a couple of hours ago. Nice to see you're back. I really enjoy your calm and comforting voice during these vids. :D
Thanks for the feedback it means a lot! Good luck with the upgrade!
I wish I could like this video twice. Very helpful, sir!
Following your guide was pretty easy, the LCD model i got on sale had different wiring so I only ended up having to unplug the power while i did the swap and i used the older version of the cloning software and everything went smooth, i erased all my games before cloning and just reinstall after the swap, I had a complete panic attack waiting for that first boot up but it seems perfect
Got 2tb to work with now : D
Nice to see you're back.
What the heck is up with your profile pic?
@@tommyg4842 it’s a scene from the short film ‘Begotten’.
@@sunwheel666 okay thanks, thought it was maybe ai, and I was making shapes out of nothing. Good to know it was good ol nightmare fuel lol
Great video, the x64 Etcher download is now a zip, could not figure out how to get it to work, so got an earlier version from softronic. Worked great thank you.
Can you put a link for x64? I'm having the same issue. Thanks!
Is this a re-upload? I'm sure I watched and liked this video last night 😂
Yeah, you’re not going mad! I removed the background music as it was too loud!
Great Video, thank you! Going to jump into this with my LCD Deck this weekend - just before I do, you mentioned there were some differences with the LCD versus the OLED version, is it just the internals being slightly different?
Yes, the screws are different and also the placement of each of the internal parts. Personally I found the LCD easier. I’d recommend following along to the ifixit guide as it goes into more detail then I show in my video, and make sure to remove the SD card! Good luck!
@@steamdeckguy Awesome! Thank you for the insight! Just subscribed to your channel, looking forward to seeing all the videos to come!
thanks for the tutorial! this is trully the easiest method (with ssd enclosure). i tried sudo DD in Konsole but my steam deck wont boot up.
thanks, It did work fine I just had to dl older version of BALENA etcher as the new one is borked.
5/23/24 I have confirmed this works! My new 512 OLED unit Is now 2TB!! (1.8 TB without games installed)
Thank you for this very helpful guide!
I apologize for my slowness but I would like to be sure if I understood correctly, this clone method copy all what it is (OS and games in case they are) of the ssd installed on de steam deck and put it on the ssd that is on the enclosure, after that you only need to make the switch of ssd's and it will work like it was the one that came with the steam deck, is this how this method works?
Yes - exactly that!
@@steamdeckguy Nice, It is actually a very convenient method, as soon as I have my steam deck, I will definitely use this method, thanks for the video
I subscribe to this channel.
Hello! Hoping you can help me out here! I want to stream games from steam deck to twitch and have thought of using obs but cannot use obs on desktop mode while playing games in game mode. Is there a way I can play games on desktop mode instead?
Yes, of course. Just load up steam in desktop mode.
@steamdeckguy Thanks! Will emulator games work this way too?
@@TheAnimatedWonders yes, everything will work the same
I'm planning on trying this clone method on my LCD deck as soon as it (ssd and enclosure) arrives from Amazon!
I just wanted to verify that (as you mentioned in the video) you don't need to worry about partition sizes, etc. I'm just surprised that you don't need to boot to another drive first.
There are other guides that show having to boot when using something like clonezilla. How does Belena Etcher handle this differently?
I believe steamOS is automatically extending the unused space to fit the size of the disk. Tbh, I was expecting to have to extend the partition but was surprised when I didn’t….
So a usb stick is no longer needed when updating the storage?
you only need USB stick if you want to reimage (reinstall) steam OS. For this clone method you just need an NVMe enclosure.
If I bought an OLED deck, could I clone my current LCD deck's ssd and then put that in the OLED one and have it work fine?
Yes. Just make sure your current deck is updated to latest OS version
Thank you! I was searching the comments for this exact question. I just bought the OLED deck also. I have a program I wrote to run my VPN at startup and I really didn't want to do that again, and I wasn't planning on replacing the SSD. I have large enough drives to store and transfer.
Is this the same for a regular Steamdeck?
Yes, you can use the clone method for ANY steam deck. The only difference is when it comes to a physically swapping out the SSD since the OLED model internals has been revised
Any reason why the transfer speed is slow? Mine shows 30 mbs and 201 minutes lol. Im currently doing it. Im hoping the battery doesn't go to zero
Depends on the size of the ssd you are copying and transfer speeds. Mine was pretty quick as I only had one game installed (for demo purposes)
@@steamdeckguy weird it was slow with USB c to USB c. Put a dock and use USB blue port to type c. Speeds were 350 now lol.
I thought u run a command ? So would u consider this way better? Because I’m kinda a rookie but I can do what u did in the video. And I don’t need to reimage or anything?
You can as I mentioned in the video, but personally I find this way more user friendly
@Steam Deck Guy, My Steam Deck is the LCD 256 gb model, I had to factory reset my Steam Deck,
Now all of a sudden my internal storage says 70 gb Instead of 256gb. I'm trying to figure out what in the blue hell has happened?
(General question to the public) I’m at where balena etcher is up and running. But. I’m at the part where it shows plug a source drive. There is no show hidden options. I just have a screen where it says “plug a source drive” with a picture of a SRC USB with an arrow that says. Plug a source drive in. I cannot select anything.
I have the same problem
I believe this is an issue with version 19.21 of balena etcher. I was playing around with it earlier to try and help you out and it doesn’t work for me either. But version 18.11 which I used for the video does still work (not sure if you can still download it?) I saw some comments on GitHub from a few days ago for similar issue so dev is aware. Hopefully they will fix it soon as it appears to be completely broken!
@@steamdeckguy 18.11 is available on github and solved this problem for me
@@steamdeckguy oh noooo
@@aliendisclosure227 did any of you recommend another solution
I'm having a hard time cloning my internal ssd to my 2tb ssd. When I use balena, it gives me an error message and it won't continue. Can you help??
Are you using an earlier version of balena etcher? The latest version is broken, so that may be why you’re having issues.
@steamdeckguy I downloaded several versions of 18 and it says it's starting, but never does..
So, I've tried this over and over. turns out I'm getting the same results. I tried on a brand new ssd. I even tried on another one actually. Both different, both same results...and basically it can run perfect 1st try after cloning, but the second I attempt to restart, it gets stuck on the logo, any work around this?
Side note, I went into the steam OS (minus and power selecting second option) and after all the gibrish, it said at the end "cannot open access to console the root account is locked"
Sounds like it’s corrupt. I’d put the original drive back in (or use a PC) and create a recovery drive, then do a full re-install on the new drive.
@steamdeckguy create a recovery drive? 🤔.. ok, could you give me a little step by step process guide? And you said put it in my original ssd?
@@misfitmazza663 ruclips.net/video/8SqomrDTYfs/видео.html
@steamdeckguy so I tried the recovery using my laptop and it got stuck with gibrish sideways saying error can't find command. Then it changed into this white outline "gnu grub" with 5 options to choose (steam os, advanced options, system halt, system restart)
So I’ve started over. Followed your instructions completely. Etcher flashed and verified. Looked at storage and nothings changed, still saying 1.8TB free. This was a brand new WD_BLACK SN770M 2TB. I give up and ill have to start over which is ballache.
1.8tb free for a 2tb drive is normal.
@@steamdeckguy Even it was cloned? I can’t get my head around this. I followed everything correctly but I’m still left with no space. 😩😩😩😩
@@russellmay9841 what size disk are you cloning from? And did you have windows installed by any chance?
How do I resize the disk? I cloned my 1tb to 2tb and I’ve not got any space. I’m a newbie
You shouldn’t have to. Did you follow this guide to clone your disk? Also, do you have windows installed?
@@steamdeckguy I followed the guide. Yes I’ve got windows installed. 1st issue I’ve run into following all your guides.
@@russellmay9841 look up a guide on how to extend the partition - it should be straight forward fix. By default, steamOS will extend storage to unused space automatically, but I am assuming because you had created your own partitions (for windows) it hasn’t done it.
@@steamdeckguyAny links to doing that please? I can’t find a good one. Thank you
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately when i tried following it exactly everytime i clicked clone drive in balena etcher it just gave a prompt to connect the source drive. So i followed a reddit post using konsole and the dd command, which took FOREVER but did do the job. As for the rest of the video, i agree completely, tweezers suck. Chubby fingers for the win.
Glad you did it. Annoyingly balena etcher is broken with the latest release. Hopefully they fix it soon!
@@steamdeckguyoh sweet, i thought i was just dumbass. Good to know it wasnt me.
@@steamdeckguywhich version should we go back to, to avoid this issue? Right now i’m experiencing the same issue: Balena not recognizing my sd card.
Hey! I got the 1.18 and it was almost done, then outta nowhere it says “flash failed!
That sucks! Maybe try again - it might have got interrupted
The current version would not detect the source drive on the current version of the Steam Deck OS
Yeah the current version of balena etcher is completely broken….
I accidentally formatted it. How do I get it not, where this can work?
Providing the drive shows up in balena etcher, it shouldn’t be an issue
It doesn’t recognize it in bale man etcher. It shows it on the steam deck. But when I pull up Helena etcher. It says connect a drive.
*balena
I’m stuck at “plug a source drive” in. I cannot get it to recognize the 64GB SSD in the steam deck. Not sure how to get it to recognize.
Wait.... When did etcher offer a drive cloning feature!?!?!?!? No clonezilla or some random software that wants you to buy the "pro version"?
No idea - I just spotted the feature one day, and gave it a go… turns out it works great! 👍
need help when i press clone nothing shows up
Sorry, it’s an issue with the latest v..19 version of balena etcher - it’s completely broken. It should still work with v1.18 if you’re able to find that version online
Try this version: github.com/balena-io/etcher/releases/download/v1.18.13/balenaEtcher-1.18.13-x64.AppImage
Thank you for all the videos you posted to help me learn and understand my SD Oled I've used sudo dd for cloning worked so far
@@steamdeckguy how do i install after downloading it? its asking for an application to open it
Nvm, I figured it out. I had to right click, go to properties, and execute. Then run on konsole.
this did not work for me, my steamdeck wont boot now
Hold the volume down button during boot, and then check that the ssd card is showing up as a boot drive. If it doesn’t, it means you have not connected the SSD properly. Otherwise, I’d suggest putting your old drive back in and either retrying, or doing the reimage method (I have another video showing how to do that)
@@steamdeckguy I have the new SSD in now and working but had to wipe it to get it to boot from usb. I’ll just have to re do my settings over time, unless there is a way of copying over stuff from my old drive
@@samladlow1 Same, with the cloned ssd it is not booting at all even though the ssd is been detected from the BIOS
@@shattia I booted from usb and just re did my settings, the only tricky bit was getting yuzu to work again. But I’m all sorted now. I just did it all gradually
@@samladlow1 I just wiped it and reimaged the sd. Emudeck was already on the external sd so everything is working just fine already. I just need to Download all the games again.
"easy method" "ok now you're gonna need to buy ... -" okay bro
No worries bro. If you don’t want to buy an enclosure then follow my other guide to reinstall steamOS - I’ll warn you though you will need to buy a USB drive or micro sd card…personally though I recommend getting an enclosure so that you can use the old SSD as an additional storage device.
