    yeah, have some of the same frustration in DBA. I am OK with hitting academic writing requirements, but have felt that the focus on it over the actual subject (that seems not at all important to school) is over the top.
    I need to get over it and just give them what they want or recognize it's not for me. I wanted a DBA, not PhD and that IMHO should be more focused on the practice/application side than everything so hyper focused on format.

    • @lifebyjustin
      @lifebyjustin  Год назад +4

      I hear ya, especially when you mentioned, "I need to get over it and just give them what they want or recognize it's not for me." I feel that too.
      You mentioned the need for "application" in a scholar-practitioner degree like DBA/EdD. I get that. I'd appreciate more assignment feedback and explanation on the application of knowledge, particularly for major papers. Something like, "you did a good job using this theory/concept because of blah blah, but you might need to reconsider that part of the theory/concept in relation to your example because of blah blah." I just need to know if my thinking is on the right track, especially in a doctoral program focused on developing within specialization.
      I don't blame the instructors; they have a lot of work to review in a short time. I'm also grateful that they provide comments, even if it's about writing or formatting typically. What we're talking about might be a drawback or challenge with certain CBE models. Or it could also be a reality. Reminds me of the "Project Management Triangle" or "Triple Constraint," where you can't have all three: quality, cost, and time. There's a trade-off I suppose.

    Juat want you to know you motivated me. I too am a life long learner. I was thinking about Capella but I just could not get rid of the icky feeling I had about them. I applied to start my DBA with them last year and just never did it I just recently applied again I heard of South college earlier this year and reached out but never really followed up and it just kind of popped in my head again today and now I've been watching your videos and I'm thinking maybe South is a better option for me I've joined the groups so here's hoping that I'll be on this journey in January

    • @lifebyjustin
      @lifebyjustin  Год назад

      Thank you for mentioning that! Always great to come across other lifelong learners.
      I believe some students switched from Capella's EdD program to South College because they felt the Capella EdD curriculum had too many irrelevant case studies. South College's curriculum seems better suited to one's specific work context and situations.
      It's also growing rapidly, so it's a good opportunity to look into it more before it becomes too large. I'm sure there are pros and cons with getting larger. Currently, there's a "personalized touch" with instructors, and assignments are still graded quite quickly. Who knows if that'll change one day.

    Justin stay motivated, youll be able to push through im sure. I just want to say that as I've been researching doctoral programs I've heard similar feedback from collegaues who pursued a D SC in information technology, from a state univ program, online format. Not much if any new knowledge was obtained and it was mostly academic writing with a research project topic that will be published in lieu of a dissertation. As a non writer this info has been a little scary to me, but m starting to wonder if thats thd nature of many/most online based doctoral programs.

    • @lifebyjustin
      @lifebyjustin  Год назад +3

      I appreciate your comments BDJ Tech. Your recent comments have been helpful and motivating. I think you're onto something in noting that many online professional doctoral programs primarily focus on academic writing. It's a longstanding tradition in the world of doctoral studies. There is value to academic writing, even though it can feel constraining and inflexible at times.
      Though, all that said, we'll see if I continue on this journey. I'd like too. I do want to conduct my own research because my ideas align with my professional interests :)

    When you say, "try to find research" are you talking about research through the schools library/ article searches/ school provided tool etc? Or are you talking about general research through the web. I'm very much interested and I have a start date of Oct 1st. However, if my papers are based on searching through the school provided archives; I feel like I may have some difficulties if I can't find my own information (I hope I'm making sense in the question).
    I love watching your journey and hope to see you succeed in this. Earning a doctorate for me at least will be extremely rewarding as a professor. I think of it like I'm not doing this for myself, I'm doing this for my students.

    • @lifebyjustin
      @lifebyjustin  Год назад +3

      Hey! When working on the assignments, it's a good idea to incorporate scholarly works or research papers to back up your ideas with evidence. You can use resources and tools like library catalogs, Google Scholar, ProQuest, JSTOR, EBSCOhost, ERIC (if you're in Education), and other ones. Supporting your claims with up-to-date and credible research is pretty important at South College, particularly when you get to the specialization and dissertation courses. Certain assignments, even formatives, specify that you must use academic or research sources that are both peer-reviewed and within the last five years. At this stage of the degree (course six), I only use recent and peer-reviewed sources for my assignments.
      It's great you have that intention behind doctoral studies. Don't lose sight of your reasons for pursuing it. It'll be very useful to remind yourself of them during the ups and downs :)
      Thanks for the support too. I'm putting my best foot forward. Mid way points are tough

      @@lifebyjustin Greetings, I thought I replied but must have forgotten to click send 🙃
      Can you explain a formative assessments and what they have been like for you? Are they pop quizzes via zoom calls or ?

    • @lifebyjustin
      @lifebyjustin  Год назад +2

      @@Tyswave The formatives are typically written tasks to support summative assessments. For instance, I'll give a recent example that is from a specialization course in the EdD. I had to make an annotated bibliography for eight recent academic papers as part of a formative task, and this then developed into a research paper for the corresponding summative assessment.
      Each competency usually has a few formatives and summatives, so at least a few different papers per competency. And there's 5-6 competencies per course.
      At times, the formatives require a lot of effort because they involve extensive reading and researching to grasp a topic thoroughly. This might mean, for instance, doing a literature review that eventually leads to a research paper. Or another example is reading several textbook chapters and then writing a paper, which later develops into a more detailed position paper during the summative stage. Another example is you might be analyzing qualitative and quantitative datasets during the formative stage, and then creating a detailed report with recommendations as the summative. This program is a lot of writing. Papers must be well-writing with proper APA citation and scholarly sources throughout.

    How did you get throigh so fast? Did you do a paper assignment every day? I think i might do south college for the fun of it.

    • @lifebyjustin
      @lifebyjustin  Год назад

      I did 1 to 3 assignments daily, with most of them being papers. During the initial five courses, I worked part-time and spent around 2 to 5 hours each day on schoolwork. Also, I've been practicing meditation for many years, so I think its helped with concentration. When I work, I typically stay focused without getting easily distracted. Having completed three previous master's degrees has also made me an efficient writer.
      I've deliberately slowed down because I'm working more and don't need to sprint as much based on my Pacing Guide.
      If you like writing, you'll find South College enjoyable. Most assignments allow you to draw connections to your own work experiences, which is nice.

    • @taressastraughter7788
      @taressastraughter7788 Год назад

      @lifebyjustin another question, how many papers you wrote for each assignment?

    • @lifebyjustin
      @lifebyjustin  Год назад +1

      @taressastraughter7788, I've got a video that covers the number of assignments at South College, feel free to check it out. Each course has anywhere from 12 to 27 assignments, with most courses around 20 assignments. These assignments are either formative and summative assessments.
      Summative assignments, which make up about 8 per course, can include tasks like research papers, position papers, or other academic writing assignments that tie into the course content. Formative assessments act as stepping stones toward the summative assessments. For example, if your summative task is a research paper, a corresponding formative assignment might be an annotated bibliography or a literature review. Formative assessments can be straightforward sometimes but time-consuming at other times since they require you to understand the material and ideate. Readings and brainstorming might be involved.
      Most papers don't come with a specific page count, but mine can range from 5-25 pages. Just depends on the nature of the assignment. Maybe 8 or 9 is typical. They also incorporate recent (within the last 5 years) peer-reviewed scholarly works to support my ideas and claims.

    Dude... you've done more than half of a doctoral degree in 2 MONTHS!!! Maybe you're going to dang fast. Slow it down a tad. You like learning.. so why rush it?
    Give yourself a little credit. Every doctoral degree.. even the professional doctorates are research degrees.
    Pour a glass a whiskey and celebrate the awesomeness of what you've already done in such a short period of time.

      Haha, great comment! Thanks Nelson. Nice timing since I went out last night for some good food and drinks. Appreciate your encouragement.
      And you're right that the speed of things has created some challenges for me. I'll be slowing down a bit. One challenge is it made me see things about the program more quickly, which can be both good and bad. This seeing has affected my motivation levels. I'm still adjusting to certain program insights I'm having (beyond the academic writing emphasis).
      I also want to make sure to show the highs and lows of the journey. Hoping to normalize them for others.
