and how erosion will change the landscape in the future.

Ashamed to know this was in my backyard for 29 years and nobody I knew ever talked about it. Thanks for the video.

I know these videos are old but I just now found them and I love them! I live in Arizona and I've been fascinated by the geology around me. I have absolutely no formal training or education, and little exposure having grown up in Illinois.

Just visited the falls for the first time this weekend...AWESOME!!! If this were on our state forest land they would build a resort around it and charge $50 to get in. We were lucky enough to see it in full action at a good flow rate. I would highly recommend it to all...It is a site to be seen!

Glad you got to see this place! One of the advantages of only having water running part of the year is that there's little incentive to put in a major development. As a geologist I love going out there in May or June when the falls are bone dry. You can get a close up look at the plunge pools, pot holes and undercutting. Plus you pretty much have the place to yourself.

Visited here when it was dry.....There were a few pools of standing water, but mostly dry. We traversed the whole area of the falls.....very interesting and lots of fun. I'm going back when it is running. Not the easiest place to find, which is a good thing.

I have the links to the stream gages at both Winslow and Cameron up on the blog feed on my web site. If both read 100 cubic feet plus you're pretty sure to find water running over the falls. I find it very impressive when it's dry also, but very cool to something that turns on and off! gkcgeoscience.com/links-to-little-colorado-river-stream-gages/

You are right ! We knew it would be dry when we visited in July of 2014. Plan on going back next spring...It is an amazing wonder of my native state.

Odds are best in February, but it varies wildly from year to year.

This area with water is like the opening scene in movie "Prometheus".

I was able to attend a presentation on the Little Colorado by David Dean of the USGS on May 17, 2018. Apparently the flood with 120,000 cubic feet of water was in September of 1923, not 1924 as indicated in the video. There is no evidence of a dam collapse at that time, and apparently no sudden downburst from a single thunderstorm. It had rained steadily for more than a week, and the combined discharge of all of the tributaries produced a monster flood. According to David there are now approximately 3700 stock ponds within the drainage in addition to the dams, so a future flood of this magnitude is pretty unlikely.

No. The falls were running last Wednesday (7-18) when I was last out there.
