And so, he grew up to become HowToBasic.
On a darker note, this is seriously chilling. Watching his room and health slowly deteriorate genuinely disturbs me. Maybe it's the feeling of being trapped that scares me so much. I couldn't watch it if I didn't know it was fake.

You, even, Night mind, with your wonderful documentaries on the horror genre and its depths on the internet, one of my only bastions of hope left, have taught me plenty of adult level lessons, including the line between reality and fiction. In the video where he's scrounging around in the alley, he's dragging something behind him in the blue tarp. It seems to be heavy and if you look you can see what might be the outline of a head in the tarp. There's a bloody brick in the alley and the contents of the trashcan contain the avocados he's previously used in a tutorial. I think it might be implied that he went back to his own house and murdered his brother out of anger at what he's done to him. This can be supported by alan's "How to Kill" when thinking of tutorials. Maybe he did make that tutorial, but we never got to see due to him realizing what he's done.

I know it's just a character and this is all a metaphor for RUclips, but this whole series went from amusing-yet-concerning, to worrying, to depressing, to upright horrifying, and throughout all of it I was rooting him on.
I've got the fun combo of autism and C-PTSD myself, and while I don't deal with age regression or anything like that, it really does sometimes feel like you're just... stuck in a room, doing what you're used to in an attempt to comfort yourself while the world shifts around you and people pressure you both into and away from all these different tasks, when all you want to do is enjoy this comfortable little space you're trapped in. Leaving isn't as easy as how most people make it seem; while they just walk out the door, it feels like you're locked in.
You can't just walk out, you have to break out.

I truly don’t think Alantutorial ended. When you look at it this way, a few of Resnicks works can be considered as tutorials, and often strike a similarity with Alantutorial. Things like “sculptors clay ground” “save it to your desktop” and “live forever as you are now” all feature Alantutorial references, the fact that in “live forever as you are now” has the main background color as blue, or how in “save it to your desktop” Alan’s personality slowly slips into Alantutorial territory and not to mention in “Sculptors clay ground” Alan would call the clay slick “water” like Alantutorial calls several liquids water.

I think this first project, especially being named after Resnick, was a true exposure to his mind and story telling process, an insert of himself. And now all his stories are just from the mind of Alan, and Alan.

I was always unsettled by Alan's brother. We never see him but he has a strong presence. And NOT the good kind. It's hard to explain how I can hate so much a fictional character who never even appears on camera. I just do.
That is one of the many, many reasons I love Alantutorial. It's very strong, it borders on genius. And as always, your video is fantastic. I actually watch this one for the third time or so and I don't get bored. Keep it up, you're doing an amazing job. And thank you for such high quality content.

i can relate to alan. when my grandpa died i was talking to him about guns (our favorite topic) when suddenly he passed out. he stopped breathing and as far as i can confirm, he may as well have died in that chair. i see that chair every single day of my life and i can't get rid of it. i can't sit in it, i hate looking at it i hate it because it reminds me of how i reacted to the whole thing. i stood there. i tried to wake him up and i gave up i was frozen i could not accept any of it it wasn't happening it couldn't happen but it did and i just stood there. it still bothers me and i cant forget about it no matter how hard i try. its been 6 months now since that one christmas day. it hurts it wont stop i want it to stop and it wont go away. im failing school now. worst case i get shoved into the five year plan. i could spend days staring at that damn chair.

I grew up an undiagnosed autistic. And the portrayal of Alan broke my heart, and resonated with me in such a deep and meaningful way. I see myself in him. And it hurts seeing his story. Watching him stim to comfort himself in the absolute filth his captors kept him in is awful. People neglect autistic people all the time, because they can’t “be bothered” to help them, even slightly. His brother abandoning him/forcing him out for his meltdown/outburst, and then his kidnappers abandoning him after Alan wasn’t as entertaining or profitable in some way is such a real experience for autistic people.
Many autistic people have to hide their condition to have relationships because Neurotypicals find it “disturbing”. As such, Autism is treated as this horrific thing, monstrous and unsightly. Whenever an autistic people show their autism, Neurotypicals typically respond in that negative way. Abuse, neglect, abandonment.
As such, autistic people often are recluse or have a very small circle of friends, many will typically be autistic or neurodivergent as well. Or, like you see with Alan, they go to fiction for relationships (read: Alan’s dollar man) in their lonesome. Many autistic people are not recluse by choice, they are forced as the world around them finds them unsightly.
Despite it being fiction, I desperately hope that Alan in that universe is okay. That someone found him and loved him like he deserved.

    • @tipsyConfection
      @tipsyConfection 9 месяцев назад +6

You've made me sad, as I lived as an undiagnosed one meself for most of my life. Well, undiagnosed to me and most others, as my parents knew and hid it and would refuse special needs classes for me because they were afraid that I would be an outcast that way and would never have a job or life in general as I would be labeled insane or something, not realizing that I amhaving problems now _because_ of not being properly taken care of, as you can't get rid of a problem by avoiding it.
Although, I was definitely luckier than most, as rarely anyone got bothered bymy autism, be it IRL or online, it's even why I have so many connections now, even if I still don't really have friends to hang out with in person, but I'm working on it as I am tired of being alone.
I didn't notice on my first watch, but now, being a proper adult and realizing my autism, Alan's story upsets me even more, relating to his mannerisms and seeing myself in his actions. Man...

I've come to the conclusion that Alan doesn't actually live in the original house. Or rather, he used to live there, but has either escaped an institution, or has become orphaned, so he returns to squat in his childhood home. The house is being renovated by its new owners, a young couple, maybe Alan's brother, maybe not. This couple isn't living in the house whilst its being renovated, hence the lack of oversight of Alan, and his fear of being seen or heard, and childish attempts to pretend he's rightfully occupying the house by mimicking somebody knocking on his door. After the ceiling is caved in the new owners realise something is awry, and bar the windows.

I'm not going to hide it, I have autism myself and I am so happy to see attention brought to it. I've noticed that often, people don't know how to deal with people with autism, more specifically, Asperger's Syndrome, often times treating people with autism like children or like we're sick. We are not much different from other people, we just have some quirks and given enough help, we can become almost normal. Although there are those that are crippled by it, Alan is a perfect example of this, and it pains me to see someone who needs help like him denied it. We've taken to believing that ignorance is bliss, and honestly it's just not true. I know I likely sound a little weird here, I'm not good at saying what I mean, but I hope people can understand.

I agree, I know someone that has Aspergers and another who is in worse condition. One had support, the other was practically neglected and lived in awful conditions. Honestly, I think doctors need to reevaluate their studies and do a broader study that doesn't focus on just neurological development that includes environmental factors like support and care levels. Plus the misinformation online from funded "educational" adverts basically call all Autism Sufferers as complete burdens to their parents, whom also insult the sufferer while they are in the same room.
No wonder a lot of these autism sufferers never get better, we need to research this further.

Agreed. I have a cousin that was said by doctors to never be able to learn to speak from his autism but his parents are amazing people - they weren’t just going to not try. He has now graduated high school and works. Too many people just give up and it’s so unfair to the people that could be living much better lives if they just got the support they needed.

There are many people in my life with autism including my brother and some close friends. I don’t see them as any different from other people and try to be supportive where I can, especially when people outright disrespect them. In fact I’m going to talk to my school consoler about a bullying situation toward one of said friends, and see to it that they help.

I'm autistic and I feel like Alan portrays the sort of person I would be if I was never exposed to people as I am. He acts much like I did when I was a child, I even made "tutorials" and had a special interest in making useless, arbitrary inventions. The only way that many autistic people can be classified as "high functioning" is if they learn from almost exclusively the adults that surround them, and being neglected, Alan may have only had interaction with his brother, who was around the same age, or no one at all. It's important to learn while the mind is young and malleable, or else that person would become much less open to new ideas at an older age. Calling an autistic person a child or infant is also a common way to ridicule or express one's distaste towards them, which may translate into how Alan refers to himself. Because the children I was with couldn't pronounce parts of my name, I pronounced it wrong for years. Speaking from experience, many autistic people's self-identification is very easily influenced by outside forces. If someone tells me "you're a relaxed kind of person," I will act more relaxed around them so as not to upset their idea of what I am. Just kind of an insider's point of view, I'm sorry that it's so long. I have trouble with limiting the number of words I use.

My older brother has Autism, and for a while he would whispers everything he said under his breathe after he intailly said it. Maybe he just put a lot of thought into making the tutorials as intentionally bad as possible. I think he's smart but I don't get all the people dissecting his videos like he's an artist and there's a deeper meaning like an english teacher does with poems

dlaldlaldla nutsntnstn it is an art piece by a man named Alan Resnick.

dlaldlaldla nutsntnstn he... is an artist. This is exactly like a teacher analyzing a poem. Because they both have meaning that the artist wants viewers to think about.

God. I really do wanna sit down and watch this analysis and the series itself in full while i'm 100% awake for ONCE, but every time i try i get such bad sads. Just, having grown up as an undiagnosed autistic, way too much of this hits so close to home. And like-- that's not a bad thing. Absolutely the opposite. It hits hard cause it's written well and preformed well. And it's the quality that makes it hard to watch. Reminds me so much of things that have happened to me or to my friends. Alan did a fantastic job with this series. I really hope i can finally manage to finish it someday, or at least go through the highlights. Cause he deserves those views.

Hey man, I hope you're ok. I don't normally talk about this stuff to anyone but felt obligated to do so here. I'm autistic too, struggled a lot through school and college but I'm 29 now and haven't had medication in over a decade. I have trouble with productivity here on RUclips in what I truly want to make because I see the rest of the planet as intellectually inferior and it's SO depressing to feel like an intelligent guy in a sea of morons. That's where my perpetual cycle of procrastination comes from. I don't claim to understand your plight, but I too have gone through issues with friends and are only just coming to terms with things at almost 30... I just felt obligated to tell you that even if you think nobody in your life doesn't agree with or follow you for your opinions, there's always someone willing to listen who cares ❤

Was too scared to watch the whole thing before..yet now? I’m extremely glad I did so! So much so that I keep coming back here to watch the mystery of Alan unwind again and again

This is seriously some top-class acting. The guy behind this series delivers a much more convincing performance than most Oscar-winning actors in Hollywood-movies these days.
