      There are sources and sinks of vacancies in the crystal. Free surfaces, grain boundaries and edge dislocations all act as both sources and sinks of vacancies. If an atom from a regular site join these defects they act as source of vacancy.The vacancy concentration increases. If an atom from these sites leave an fill a nearby vacancy they act as sinks of vacancy. Vacancy concentration decreases.
