  • Wine Spectator has published its annual list of Top 100 wines. Seeing that the majority of the top 10 wines sold out so quickly after their reveal, made me want to take a closer look at this list. And I decided to make my own TOP 10 from the Wine Spectator's Top 100. Unfortunately some of the decisions in the Top 100 list were not completely clear to me, so I will be also sharing my 3 disappointments.

    Congratulations! Great insights about Wine Spectator's Top 100... Tannat is such an undervalued grape (Uruguay's emblematic grape). I am glad one of Garzon's wines made it to the Top 100... Please, try "Licor de Tannat" from Familia Deicas. For me , it's even better than Port. Cheers!

    At a glance, Wine Spectator's scores tend towards being 2-4 points higher than the general consensus. Reminds me of Robert Parker a little bit, which I admittedly find a little suspect. There's a lot of commercial drivers in the mass market that aren't always comparatively representative. In fact, I'm starting to wonder if the scorings mean different things depending on which market segment they target.

    • @Birdylockso
      @Birdylockso 6 месяцев назад +1

      After tasting wines for close to 40 years, I came to the realization that the "general consensus" tends to be too "stingy" in giving out the points. It seems the people rather save the higher points for wines that they haven't tried, and most likely will never try. After a few decades of scoring wine for my own benefit, I rather give a nice score to a wine that I believe is great to excellent; as such, there are now more 90-95 points wine.

    • @QualeQualeson
      @QualeQualeson 6 месяцев назад

      @@Birdylockso That's a matter of personal perspective, which I can appreciate. But when I refer to "general consensus" (which I honestly hesitated to use precisely because it's hazy) I was referring to professional critics. Honestly, what the anonymous private wine drinker has to say about a wine doesn't interest me much. When you're not held accountable, people can and _will_ do whatever they feel like for whatever reason. Which is why when you look at the platforms that measure this "smallest common denominator" it basically turns every wine into the same wine with the same score. So that's how meaningful that is. Meaning it has no meaning at all.

    • @Birdylockso

      "what the anonymous private wine drinker has to say about a wine doesn't interest me much"
      --I beg to differ. Cellartracker's "private wine drinkers" have consistently provided a great reference for me in wine purchase, oftentimes more accurate than professional critics, who often are all over the place in their reviews of the same wine.

    • @QualeQualeson
      @QualeQualeson 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@Birdylockso IDK Cellartracker and I don't know what you're referring to exactly. I'm referring to the mass platforms where every wine has a 4.2 score or something like that, Vivino I think one is called. I doubt you'll get any references there. My point is that for a reference to have any meaning, you have to know some things about the giver, otherwise he or she might not even have drunk the wine for all you know, which I'm pretty sure happens all the time on those big commercial platforms.

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  6 месяцев назад +2

      I actually agree with You. I think the commercial drivers are very important for these lists, especially in the US market. But that is a story for a different time. 😅

    WS as a publication is starting to show some more diversity compared to 5--10 years ago, but compared to Decanter or other wine publications it is more conservative or traditional. I think that their target demographic has a lot to do with the wines that they rate highly, as perhaps their readers aren't familiar with exotic or unusual wines from faraway places.
    It was great to see a Taurasi wine score highly and an Uruguayan Albarino in their Top 100 list is an achievement as well. I agree with your disappointments as well. Greece has some many amazing indigenous varieties, why stick with SB? Gruner Veltliner is Austria's calling card, whereas Riesling is second chair and can you only have one Champagne, on top of that a celebrity rose champagne?! Pfft!

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  6 месяцев назад

      Thank You! 🙏🏻 I think because some many readers trust their judgment, they can surely add some more specific wines from less known regions, grape varieties, etc. It doesn’t need to be a lot! I also might not call them conservative - I think it is more commercial with few exceptions! 😅

    paldies for the video, Agnese. first and foremost, as we say in Brazil, "kopš Mozus laikiem (un desmit baušļiem) ir zināms, ka saraksti ir strīdīgi"...
    that said, you nailed so many wrong things about this list: 29 American wines but just one fortified wine and one champagne - from a winery that has just started producing champagne and is owned by a celebrity; they praise Aglianico but don't care about Greek grapes and prefer to choose a Sauvignon Blanc from Greece; many wines from big producers but nothing much off the beaten path.
    I won't be changing a single hair in my wine buying habits because of this list - maybe just skip those bottles whose prices will soar after becoming famous and sought-after.
    after all this rant, here's a suggestion: why don't you make a video with your 10 (or 20) favourite wines this year? I guess it would be much more interesting than the WS list. and you know that wines have no score, they have stories behind them - so your list would probably consider it and how you got into these wines...

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  6 месяцев назад

      Wow, thank You for such an insightful comment. 🙏🏻 and thank You for including words in Latvian, it is so sweet of You. 🙏🏻 I don’t feel that my top wines would matter, I am just a student and a still learning about wine! 🍷

    • @palandi
      @palandi 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@NoSediment the fact that you're "just a student", as you described yourself, is precisely what makes it matter! being a student (or behaving like one) makes you feel excited about the wines you try for the first time, the ones no one told you about, the ones you shared with friends viewing the Paramount Pictures' mountains from the Langhe, and so on. a good wine is the one that makes you feel things, not the one that makes you do the maths for a scoreboard.
      what are the stories behind the WS list? probably much less exciting than our personal journeys. the only professional critic I pay attention to (initials JR) doesn't hide her excitement when she finds a bottle that twists and turns her thoughts - I hope you have read her "Confessions of a Wine Lover" book.
      all this talk is just to say that I'd rather have a top 10 "no sediment, all sentiment", in any order, than a "professional" top 100 which may have been boo$ted by $ome $trange factor$...

    • @chemepharmd76
      @chemepharmd76 6 месяцев назад

      @yriafehtivan I enjoy 10-yr tawnies, but find the 20s have a much more pronounced caramel, toffee, and oak characteristic. This comes at a fairly modest price increase over the 10s. The 30, 40, and even 50 year old tawny ports are quite outstanding, but come at a much greater price. The 20 is the sweet spot of the QPR. The tawny ports are blends of a variety of vintages for an average age of the year on the bottle. Each port house has a distinctive style they try to achieve and be consistent with. If possible, you should give the 20 a try and see if it's worth it to you. Cheers!

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  6 месяцев назад

      What was very interesting to me, and I only recently realised this -> tawny port with age indication doesn’t need to be aged for 10 years, or average 10 years, etc, It must organolepticly be AS 10YO or 20YO. Therefore, for me 20 year usually will show more integration and more tertiary aromas, which I love in Port wines. 🍷

    Joel Gott 12$ Sauvignon Blanc has no right being on the top 100 list let alone being so high on the list.
    I think that is a wine that can go on the top budget wine / value wine list. Seeing it on the list beating out spectacular and actually interesting wines makes it feel like they bought their way into the list. It's basic , it's boring, it's uninteresting, you've had it and wines just like it a million times over. It offers nothing unique or interesting. It is quite literally, an ok wine for 12 dollars and nothing else.
    Something about being in the high 30s on the list with a 91 point rating , beating literal other wines that scored higher by the same critic. Idk. Whatever. I think there is a little something going on under the table between WS and Joel Gott over here lmao.

You're starting to be an adult, naivety is not good company. Of your Top I only know the Italians and you don't seem to have been very courageous, the Radici is excellent every year, a true institution, the basic Barolo from Scavino is really a Barolo for tourists but it has a beautiful cellar...
