Did you, like me, feel a lot of sympathy for Sutcliffe?
I'd have filed down the firing pin, run a steel brush (on the end of an electric drill) through the barrel and cylinder chambers, then run a reamer through the rifling lands. Then I'd boil the gun in caustic soda, throw away the (sandpapered and cleaned) bullets. _Then_ I'd file the name and the serial number off the gun, to a depth of at least 1/4". Then I'd wirebrush every part of the gun, boil the parts in ammonia. - Wipe it all down. _Then_ I'd get someone to take me on a "fishing trip" and surreptitiously tip the gun over the side of the boat. Have I missed something?
The one failing in this story is that the police could have done a "paraffin test" on Sutcliffe. That would have shown explosives residue and established that Sutcliffe recently shot something.

I saw that in a movie, it changes the crevices in the barrel so the bullets won't match. Does it really work, asking for a friend 😜
