    Huck Finn is probably the most censored book in America, because if seven words Huck says when he writes a letter telling folks back in Missouri where Jim is at so they can take him back to slave for them--and he remembers the good times and friendship he had with Jim--and he thinks about how anyone against slavery supposed to go to Hell, so Huck tears up the letter and says "All right, then, I'll go to Hell". That STILL messes people up!

    • @richardranke7878

      Initially this messed me up, but later I realized that Huck didn't realize he was making a good decision, although forbidden by society.

    • @bugeyedmonster2
      @bugeyedmonster2 4 года назад +47

      And remember that back then, Southern preachers taught that help slaves escape was wrong. Huck probably really did believe he would go to hell for helping Jim.
      So he was willing to face eternal torment in hell, for the sake of his friend Jim.
      How many of us could do that?
      (Even if you're an atheist or Jewish, and don't believe in hell, you still have to really respect Huck for his choice. I believe that Huck really did think he would go to hell.)

    As I read the book for summer reading I thought it was really really dry and that events were really dragged out. But then a few chapters later you realize how important every little thing was. And then at the very end of the book you just get blown away and realize how amazing the book actually is. Now I just need to read Moby Dick and Grapes of Wrath. Fun summer for me....

    I cannot believe that a network hasn't picked this book critic up and used this idea in their programming. Heck, BET would eat this up... he'd be a gold mine to them... (or any other network for that matter) Let people know that this guy is coming up for a 4 minute segment after they come back from commercial and people would probably watch the commercials to ensure they don't miss his segment. I'm serious... Somebody needs to hire this guy. He's funny and he's smart. That's two things this guy has to offer that many people who are already on television don't offer in the least. Somebody hire this man and pay him already! :-o

    It's been a long time since I read Huck Finn, but I don't think Huck rejects Christianity. I think he rejects the preachers of his society who have twisted it to defend slavery. Huck doesn't have the education to argue with the pro-slavery preachers logically, but he knows slavery is wrong and doesn't know how he knows it. I think Twain deliberately left religious and non-religious interpretations of Huck's decisions open.

    • @ishikabe1
      @ishikabe1 10 лет назад +15

      He's not against the words of the religion, but he's against the actions of the followers of that religion.

      In the book he questions why his care taker prays before meals if that adds any context their is a bunch of different times where he does

    • @MrBenMcLean
      @MrBenMcLean 9 лет назад +2

      Josh Hanson As I said, "I think Twain deliberately left religious and non-religious interpretations of Huck's decisions open." If you want to interpret it as Huck having a better intuitive understanding of God than the preachers intellectual understanding then you can, and if you want to interpret it as Huck rejecting God then you can.

    • @MrBenMcLean
      @MrBenMcLean 9 лет назад +1

      Josh Hanson "Huck never actually questions that the preachers and his guardians and all of the slave-holding people are wrong" -- like i said, he can't argue against slavery logically.
      "he just recognizes that his own feelings are in direct contradiction to everything he's been taught," -- I'm not sure Huck's opposition to slavery is just his own feelings. This assumes he's a subjectivist, emotivist about ethics, like you probably are. I don't think so. I think he looks Jim in the eyes and sees that there's a person just like him there, and I think that's more than just emotion. I think Huck has a kind of knowledge there, not just emotion, which he just can't put into words.
      "He actually thinks he's a bad person because if it." - And that's why I don't think his opposition to slavery is purely emotional: because his emotions are inclined toward these false-guilt feelings

    • @MrBenMcLean
      @MrBenMcLean 9 лет назад +1

      Christianity explicitly condones Biblical slavery, which is nothing like the American South.

    With the first camera I ever got , I found it on the neighbors trash pile . On the first roll of film . I took a picture of the Actors who played Tom and Huck standing in the front yard of Tom's house getting directions from the director . I was about 7 or 8 and the camera was an old box camera . Later I read the book Tom Sawyer and imagined a paddlewheel steamboat out on the lake where my Uncles boat dock used to be . And they Built the Showboat Branson Bell there later . The largest vessel on any landlocked body of water in America . Yeah , On Tablerock Lake in Branson . Missouri is awesome !
