  • To begin the countdown to Everton's historic stadium move, the Royal Blue podcast has launched a new series entitled Goodison Park: My Home and we kick things off in style with an exclusive interview as Chris Beesley speaks to the club's most-successful captain Kevin Ratcliffe.

Lifelong Evertonian Ratcliffe recalls his early years as a fan, travelling from his home in North Wales with his father and other relatives to matches at Goodison Park before making the leap to becoming a first team player and then skipper himself in the glory days of the mid-1980s.
As Howard Kendall's captain, the former defender offers his thoughts on lifting two League Championships at Goodison Park plus an FA Cup and European Cup-Winners' Cup while his tales of turning out in what is widely-considered to be the ground's greatest night in the latter competition as Everton recorded a famous 3-1 comeback win over Bayern Munich are priceless.

I was lucky enough to be a match going blue for the 80s side, I am truly thankful to have been witness to wonderful side captained by this gentlemen. Probably the fastest players I have seen play for Everton along with Gary Lineker & Andrei Kanchelskis. Great interview, great memories

One of the true Everton Greats. The fastest CB I have ever seen. Remember Kevin chasing the quickest winger in the league at that time Danny Wallace of Southampton. They were like two greyhounds racing by the Bullens even though the referee had blown his whistle. The crowd loved it.Wallace remembered that and stayed away from Kevin. Great partnership with Derek Mountfield. Good to see him so well. Many thanks Kevin

Great interview Chris and fascinating insight from a genuine club legend. The framing looked awkward though, couldn't you face each other rather than the camera?

Really enjoyed this thank you so much. In future similar ones , I’d be interested to drill down into an area that is often briefly referred to but rarely visited in depth. Rats again makes reference to when things started to be off kilter. This was another transition time under Kendall in that early 90’s side. Why did he think that Howard failed to find the formula to turn us around. What was going on behind the scenes. We had good players on paper. Beardsley was a superb coup for us etc
Mo Johnson was a class act north of the border. Just my feed back for folk of that time when you have them again. Much is discussed of our glory years. I’m equally interested now in why we’ve never returned 💙

My brother in law Mike Hart played alongside Kevin in Evertons A & B teams before Mike suffered an end of career injury. However, Kevin and his teammates enjoyed many social occasions attending some gigs supporting Mike's group Paris 9 in and around Merseyside, a nice diversion from the intensity of professional football.

I served my apprenticeship with Kevin. Used to go to Ainsdale beach pre-season to keep on top of our fitness. Me, Kevin, Steve McMahon, Paul Lodge, Mark Tansey. Great days. Le Harve post season Tournament was brilliant. Kevin was voted player of the tournament by Colin Harvey and Graham Smith.
