I really started off liking this album and then came along "Pearl Of The Quarter" and I fell in love with it. To this day Skunk Baxter's pedal steel work brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye.
Pedal steel = another tool in their box . Like so many contemporaries - Flying Burrito Bros. , Jerry Garcia , The Byrd's et al - it frames the picture in accessible tones . Harmonies yet again layered magnificence .

"And if you hear from my Louise..." Where is his hooker friend? Did he become obsessed and possessive to the point where she ditched him and moved to another corner? Did Louise meet with foul play? Did she "settle down" to start a family? Did she OD? Steely Dan invariably keeps us wondering.
Roxanne you dont have to put the red light out tonight . Oh that's another song about the same topic . Patti Labelle Lady Marmalade also same topic another song
Not at all. Skunk Baxter plays pedal steel a lot on the first 3 records. Check out Razor Boy, Brooklyn owes the charmer, Charlie Freak, and their first single called “Dallas” which was left off their first record (it’s not a great song)
@@steelyd2 I'll have to pull those two albums out and give them a listen. I don't remember steel guitar on Razor Boy, but Brooklyn, I can hear it in my brain's juke box.
@@davidhunter801 check out their first single “Dallas” if you’ve never heard it, it sounds a little like Pearl of the Quarter. It’s sung by the drummer Jim Hodder, same guy who sang Midnight Cruiser.
Underrated masterpiece by Steely Dan - pedal steel guitar was masterful
The drums (Jim Hodder?) are so laid back-absolutely perfect.
Shout out to Jim!
@@SightAfterDark bro this song is about a poor schlep who fell in love with a hooker 😂
Some of the best steel guitar outside of country music
Don't ask me why but this song makes me cry. Very close in theme to "Brandy" from the 70s by Looking Glass. BTW I love your guys reactions.
Thank you! We appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Weird, makes me cry too...and similarly don't know why!.....beautiful song, always been a favorite of mine

He’s amazing that’s for sure
Such an under appreciated song but one I love dearly...Skunk on Steel Pedal guitar is brilliant....
Brilliant indeed! Thanks for watching Tim!
Nice transition for SD ....great pedal steele guitar work on this one....they just letting us know how talented they really are.
You said it!

Harmonies always on point with SD
Love this song🎵❤
The most country music they ever did.
I’ve loved this song for years!
Great reaction, nice sharing this with you, haha.

My favorite SD song. Others are King of the World from Countdown and the whole Gaucho album...

It’s what they do best!
This is exactly the contemporary sitch in Thai tourist zones between old Western men and (much) younger local gals!
ewwww
THIS song!! It has a country feel, but it isn't really country if you take that one chord progression. Always loved the song
We love it too :)

That sweet, aching pedal steel guitar is by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter.
Sweet indeed
Actual Rocket Scientist!
Their original sound, before the jazz crept in. Just as good.
Just as great!
Hardcore Dan fans can probably tell me, is this the only song they used a pedal steel guitar on?

@@davidhunter801 jeez I forgot about a huge one “fire in the hole” from their debut record. Another cool skunk pedal steel solo.
@@davidhunter801 and Razor Boy has incredible interplay between steel guitar and Victor Feldmans vibraphone. Definitely revisit that one.

I wonder which “voulez vous” came first? This or LaBelle?
🤷♂️
The Boz Scaggs version is much better
