Video game crash be damned. Here in the UK, not only did we negate the effects of the crash, but the gaming industry actually thrived in 1982 and 1983. 1982 saw the release of the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64, bringing with them an affordable way for people to learn to code their own games from the comfort of their bedrooms, with enough power and memory to make truly remarkable titles that stood toe to toe with games made from professional game devs.
Good games of the years mentioned: 2017: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Cuphead, Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy, Snipperclips, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Little Nightmares, Sonic Forces, Sonic Mania, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and PUBG. 2003: Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom, Futurama, Mario Kart: Double Dash, and The Simpsons Hit & Run 1999: Donkey Kong 64, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage, Crash Team Racing, Pokemon Gold & Silver, Pokemon Stadium, Mario Party, Super Smash Bros 64, and Um Jammer Lammy. 2015: Minecraft: Story Mode, Splatoon, Metal Gear Solid 5, Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Rocket League, and Super Mario Maker. 2021: Little Nightmares 2, Crash Bandicoot 4, Metroid Dread, Wario Ware: Get It Together, Mario Golf: Super Rush, Mario Party: Superstars, Worms Rumble, Game Builder Garage, Super Meat Boy Forever, and New Pokemon Snap. 2011: Super Mario: 3D Land, Sonic Generations, Dark Souls, Minecraft, and Terraria. 1976: Um... this must be one of the only years that doesn’t have a good game, if you want to prove me wrong, pls try too because I found nothing good for 1976! 2014: Monument Valley, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros For 3DS and Wii U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Lego Movie: the Video Game, Little Big Planet 3, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, and The Sims 4. 2020: Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Super Mario 3D All Stars, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Paper Mario: The Origami King, and Minecraft Dungeons. 1982: Donkey Kong Jr., Dig Dug, Dig Dug, and Tron.
2011: Batman Arkham City, Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim, Dark Souls, Battlefield 3, Dead Space 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Uncharted 3, Gears of War 3, L.A. Noire, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Rayman Origins, Infamous 2, Mortal Kombat, Terraria, Portal 2, Minecraft. If it was just based on quality releases then 2011 would be nowhere near a worst years in gaming list.
For 1976 you could go to the arcades to play Breakout by Atari, the game Adventure was converted to the C+ programming language (paving the way for every adventure/RPG that came afterwards) and while not a game the Fairchild Channel F became the first video game console to use microprocessors and cartridges. Not great for games but some historically significant events though.
Couldn't take this list seriously when the first entry is one of the best years in gaming. 2017 was an absolute juggernaut of quality and quantity and variety in the medium and stands tall easily as one of the top 5 best years ever alongside 2004, 2007, and 2013
I mean, I do agree that it had some of the best releases of the generation, but i think with the loot boxes and birth of battle royale and microtransactions being particularly awful that year justifies its place well. I think they explained their reasoning well
@@AndroJonny95 Eeeh. Now that I've seen the whole video it's clear that this wasn't actually about the worst years in gaming but the years that had the most negative impact on gaming. It's a subtle difference but a difference nonetheless. I know they started by saying that even bad years have good games, but I feel 2017's good vastly, VASTLY outweighed the bad. And I feel that Nintendo and Sony did such a good job showing that the market can be strong without lootboxes and microtransactions that gamers SAW how shitty EA was being and revolted. Stuff like Zelda and Mario Odyssey and so many other 2017 Switch and PS4 titles made it clear that the strong, quality singleplayer experiences weren't going away. And I generally feel that the loot box hatred is going too damn far. I hate them, too....but there's a remarkably easy solution: Don't buy the games that have them. Gaming as a whole has grown so much and has become so diverse that most players can avoid every game with microtransactions, never touch anything from EA or Activision or Ubisoft or Warner Bros, and STILL never catch up on their backlog. IT doesn't matter if you only like three or four genres, there's always going to be a lot of options and you don't have to buy the shitty games. If you don't like seafood, that's fine. Go to an italian place. If you don't like microtransactions, that's fine. play Breath of the Wild or God of War.
I'm shocked he didn't say 2006. That was the year the PS3 launched horribly. Then you had the Wii with bad launch games. Let's not forget two of the most disasterous Sonic games in history.
Ah the only good video game things that happened to me in 1999 was Homeworld, Age of Empires 2, and finally getting my Gameboy Color... tbf, that's all I needed haha!
I feel a compelling energy coming from you guys regarding battle royales. It’s that “I’ve never won and I’m not good therefore I don’t like the genre,” energy.
With that port of the original Tomb Raider game on the N-Gage for 2003, I'm slightly surprised you didn't mention the repeatedly-delayed-but-still-rushed Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, which was such a flop that it actually killed the company who created Tomb Raider and Lara Croft, Core Design.
Very little was released in 1999? Here's why you are factually incorrect. THE DREAMCAST Powerstone Hydro Thunder House of the Dead 2 Soul Calibur Blue Stinger (Don't even try to fight me on this) Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter Silent Hill Final Fantasy VIII Need for Speed: High Stakes (the best NFS game ever made) Pepsiman (don't even try to fight me on this) UmJammer Lammy Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete Ape Escape Descent 3 Persona 2: Innocent Sin Driver Ogre Battle 64 System Shock 2 Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver Syphon Filter Shadowman Resident Evil 3: Nemesis Medal of Honor Planescape Torment
Not to be nitpicky, but I'm not entirely sure the 1999 entry was really researched. I mean, in that year alone we got Resident Evil 3, Final Fantasy VIII, Chrono Cross, Shenmue, Harvest Moon 64, Crazy Taxi, Everquest, Dino Crisis, Street Fighter III, Ape Escape, Jet Force Gemini, Syphon Filter, the original Medal of Honor, the original Super Smash Bros, Silent Hill and Donkey Kong 64! There really were quite a few good games released that year, no matter what genre you were a fan of.

Sidenote about 2020 but many people in the FGC/SBC(Fighting Game Community/ Smash Bros Community) were outed as sexual predators & one of our most prominent tournament series was tainted and cancelled as a result. Leffen brought up a good point about how that helped clean up our communities of nefarious elements but the stink revelation of such things lingering in said communities was a heavy blow in a heavy year. Yes doc, there's that word again...
The number one slot on this list was objectively correct, but number two should have been 1983 and jfc the entire rest of the list is hysterical madness
I think 2010 deserves an dishonorable mention solely for that being the year that Kinect and PlayStation Move launched, sending the game industry spiraling into a few years of terrible motion-control games madness.
I don't think 2017 is that bad. Come on, it had Persona 5, Nier:Automata, and Horizon: Zero Dawn, Sonic Mania, on top of all the fantastic Nintendo games and the Switch's release
Greed. Point simple, greed is why this list exists. And the in game money robbing greedy corporate tyrants will eventually cause people to do what they should do, create another crash by spending their money on something else. As long as these micro transactions even make a fee dollars, the industry won't stop them.
I don't care how much you hate microtransactions, but 2011 is one of the best years in all of gaming. How are you going to say a year that had Batman Arkham City, Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Dark Souls, Mario Kart 7, Zelda Skyward Sword, Mario 3D World, Saints Row 3, Portal 2, Modern Warfare 3, Rayman Origins, Deus Ex HR, Little Big Planet 3, Infamous 2, Resistance 3, Dead Space 2, Witcher 2, Mortal Kombat and more one of the worst years in gaming. Nah.
2015 was also the year Nvidia was first slapped with class-action lawsuit over GTX 970 memory issues. Advertising 4 GB cards with only 3.5 GB of usable fast ram that took a significant performance hit once the remaining 0.5 GB of slow memory over the 3.5 GB limit were put into use. And the year the terrible games Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5, Alone in the Dark: Illumination and Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival/Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer were released.
I was expecting the year I was born - 1984 - to come first. And it wasn't even listed! That was the limbo year between the '83 Crash and the NES American release in '85. Even though Famicom was doing well in Japan and ZX Spectrum in the UK, one can't name a single remarkable console game from that year. Excitebike and Golf are not Super Mario Bros, Metroid or Zelda. Even if you strecht that including computer games, you'll only find niche classics, such as Elite, MULE, Seven Cities of Gold or Jet Set Willy.
2021 is proving itself a shockingly bad year for gaming and has some ominous similarities to 1982 (where the crap factor in games and corporate arrogance/incompetence reaches a critical mass).
2020? Ya drunk? Persona 5 R*, TLOU2, Ghost of Thusima, Hades, Half Life Alyx, Animal Crossing, Dragon Quest 11 S*, FF7 Re*, Ori and the will of Wisps, Demon's souls Re, Spiderman Morales, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Spelunky 2, Cyberpunk, Launch of new consoles, Yakuza 7, Pillars of Eternity 2, Dreams, nioh 2, Doom Eternal, resident evil 3, Year of the remakes*, PSO 2, Cuphead*, HZD PC, Days Gone PC, tony hawk 1+2*, Crash 4, Sackboy, Torchlight 3, Dirt5, Ass.Creed Valhala and finally no man's sky has been patched. * Ports, remasters on other platforms
Funny, but placing the year that brought TLOU2, Tsushima, FF7 Remake, Demon's Souls, Miles Morales, Hades, Dreams, Animal Crossing, new consoles and the biggest growth of the industry in its history as the second worst of all time makes it a little too obvious that this video is an act of trolling

it was the last straw for many Atari families as they were sick of being screwed over with poor quality games, hence why Nintendo took a policy that a company could only release one game a year for the NES, it didnt stop bad games from coming to the platform, but it easily kept it to a minimum.
@@UltimateGamerCC 1. You should tell Nintendo that Konami was releasing Castlevania III and TMNT in the exact same year! Holy shit, look at all this spam they're dumping on the NES! And my God, Tecmo and Capcom are doing it too! Acclaim and LJN...oh, the humanity... There was a 5 game limit. And it was easy for Nintendo's favorite companies to create a proxy company like Ultra Games, and get away with adding another 5 to their limit. 2. ET was far from a horrible game by the standards of the time. What it was, was a game that required you to read the instructions. @@UltimateGamerCC Agreed, but even 10 games per year was keeping the big publishers under control. Check out LJN's Knight Rider and compare it to Ocean's on the Spectrum/C64. Or look at a game like Super Monkey Daiboken...there's nothing that awful on NES. Except for the unlicensed Action 52.
good lord peter this was bad super mario bros came out in 1985 not 1983 we just had an aniversary celebration this is embarassing if you wanna say mario bros arcade say it and don't show footage super mario bros...
Coming here in 2022 and seeing 2021... Yeah I agree. It wasn't a very good year overall. Had some good games but not enough to drag it from the hole it dug for itself
Okay, I haven't even finished the video and I can tell this list is ridiculous. 2017, Persona 5 alone disproves that. 2003, we got Soul Calibur II and the U.S. release of the first Xenosaga. 1999, give me a freaking break. Original Syphon Filter, Star Wars: Episode I Racer, original Mario Party, Bloody Roar 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, original Ape Escape, Final Fantasy VIII, Suikoden II, PS port of the first Grandia, Final Fantasy Anthology, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Lunar SSS Complete, if anything 1999 was one of the BEST years in gaming.

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (Reason enough by itself) Panzer Dragoon Orta Disaster Report Xenosaga Ep. 1 Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner Siren Golden Sun: The Lost Age Ape Escape 2 Silent Hill 3 F-Zero GX Soul Calibur II The Simpsons: Hit & Run Viewtiful Joe Jak II Time Crisis 3 Legacy of Kain: Defiance Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Beyond Good & Evil
Thank God, because whenever that girl said something on the internet the video game industry was getting a kick in the head for no reason just because she said everyone who plays a game is a "sexist monster" and the worst thing about the things she said is that she made those bold claims without providing any evidence to sustain her claim. Literally, the only way to avoid having any contact to her was to ignore her. And that worked out in the end because as you said as the time went on she faded to "irrelevance"

I personally find it mediocre but the year did have What Remains of Edith Finch so that alone excuses it for me.
HZD was as exciting as plain oatmeal. If it wasn’t PS exclusive nobody would remember it.
Nier Automata
Peters Mum is a lovely lady probably. She’s probably very interesting and can play the guitar. Unlike som boring people
Super Mario Bros. wasn’t released until 1985. 1983 was the release of the Mario Bros. arcade game.
Good games of the years mentioned:
2017: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Cuphead, Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy, Snipperclips, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Little Nightmares, Sonic Forces, Sonic Mania, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and PUBG.
2003: Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom, Futurama, Mario Kart: Double Dash, and The Simpsons Hit & Run
1999: Donkey Kong 64, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage, Crash Team Racing, Pokemon Gold & Silver, Pokemon Stadium, Mario Party, Super Smash Bros 64, and Um Jammer Lammy.
A year with Spyro 2 should be automatically disqualified from this list
@@THNF89 Agreed! That game was the sequel we needed for the lovable purple dragon!
@@willbunnell889 Ape Escape came out that year too. As far as 8 year old me was concerned that year was stacked lol
Before this started I was thinking 1999 was one of the best years in gaming due to the Dreamcast. Still one of my favorite systems ever!
The year Soul Reaver was released
That could debatible, but yeah at least based on what i have researched 1999 wasn't as bad as the other years. At least imo
Rollercoaster Tycoon alone should keep this out of the bottom 10.
From 1995 to 2021 the only bad year could arguably be 2014.
I bet Peters mother is a great person
In 2011 one of the acronyms you forgot was DCUO, which I still play
Will also still randomly play Skyrim for a few days here and there.
There was no video game crash in Japan or Europe, and it had nothing to do with Nintendos decision to launch a console.
2017 was amazing breath of the wild and super mario odyssey and horizon zero dawn were released
I can confirm 2022 has been a pretty great year for games so far
Kirby and the Forgotten land and Klonoa’s return are true blessings from this year.
Great video! You guys always make my day 😃
I am both glad and also sad that I was born in the year of “You’re winner!”
I remember 2003... but I was partying real hard so I actually don't remember 2003 that well. I was drunk!!!
I'm shocked he didn't say 2006. That was the year the PS3 launched horribly. Then you had the Wii with bad launch games. Let's not forget two of the most disasterous Sonic games in history.
To be fair, most consoles have pretty crappy launch titles. I’m not even sure the Wii would be in the bottom 5.
Ah the only good video game things that happened to me in 1999 was Homeworld, Age of Empires 2, and finally getting my Gameboy Color... tbf, that's all I needed haha!
2014 really sucked imo. Most boring year
I feel a compelling energy coming from you guys regarding battle royales. It’s that “I’ve never won and I’m not good therefore I don’t like the genre,” energy.
The taken king did not remove content, thats just factually incorrect. It was and is one of the greatest turn arounds in video game history
They reset progress or something, right? I don't play, but I remember something like that
@@HunterAtheist they just changed the leveling system, no reset
Evil Peter making an appearance again.
THE DREAMCAST
Powerstone
Hydro Thunder
House of the Dead 2
Soul Calibur
Blue Stinger (Don't even try to fight me on this)
Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter
Silent Hill
Final Fantasy VIII
Need for Speed: High Stakes (the best NFS game ever made)
Pepsiman (don't even try to fight me on this)
UmJammer Lammy
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Ape Escape
Descent 3
Persona 2: Innocent Sin
Driver
Ogre Battle 64
System Shock 2
Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver
Syphon Filter
Shadowman
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Medal of Honor
Planescape Torment
Blue Stinger is a wonderful game. And the voice acting is absolutely horrendous in the best way possible.
I love deep fried trumpets.
All but one of my favourite games came out in one of these years 😅
Sometimes gaming be trippin bro
2020 was the year I feel back in love with videogames.
2014 for me what a terrible year for gaming if people are saying shadow of mordor is the game of the year then you know it's a bad one
Bit controversial having 2021 on the list.
I feel like it would be a bit controversial not having it on the list now lolol
Horizon Zero Dawn and Persona 5 means 2017 was a great year
Are you going to finish that croooiiiiisaaaaiiiinnnttttty
15:17 Nope. That was 1985
2020 was great.
2017 was great.
2021 has some incredible games coming out.
List is baaaad.
@DreSaidSo Lots of great games have released this year, and more are coming. You're nuts, lol.
Ah, I liked Battlefront 2015 way more than Battlefront 2.
I’m gonna say it again I’m huge fan been one since you guys were in what culture
This channel is incredible and is very underrated your videos are incredible and I watch you guys more then tv or Netflix thanks I always look forward to ur new videos 🔥🔥🔥🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hello Peter’s mum, I hope you’re well
What is the music under this video?
2021 is, imo, saved by Halo Infinite. It has a lot of little issues, but I hadn't had so much fun playing almost anything online in many years
Peter? PETER? You are still alive and on youtube?! Oh god we have to tell someone!
Hm, one sec, theres an apache helicopter and a news van outside for some reason and someone just knocked on the door. Be right back...
2019 for me.
I think 2010 deserves an dishonorable mention solely for that being the year that Kinect and PlayStation Move launched, sending the game industry spiraling into a few years of terrible motion-control games madness.
Ps2 battlefront was one the greatest games of all time
2017 had The Evil Within 2 and Resident Evil 7. On top of Breath of the Wild. Good enough for me.
You can't go one Video without calling the Dreamcast a flop
Nah.
Yep, in terms of amount of quality releases it's definitely the best of the last 10 years, and I'd say one of the best of the 21st century as well.
stopping the whole rest of the video until i get that toad gigolo game
Tekken 3 was released in 1999 on PSX and it was great
You forgot that 2015 was the start of the worst couple of years for Nintendo for quite some time.....
No year was a bad year for PC gaming. PC always has the best and worst released every year. It's simply a constant spectrum of good/bad.
OH HERE WE GOOOOOOOO.... Oh not that video
Thank god 2008 wasn’t added to this
I was expecting the year I was born - 1984 - to come first.
2022 is the worst for me
2021 is proving itself a shockingly bad year for gaming and has some ominous similarities to 1982 (where the crap factor in games and corporate arrogance/incompetence reaches a critical mass).
@@Gatorade69 Yeah, unless you're a reviewer, or one of the people who voted for awards, or one of the gamers who voted in any of the polls, or really anyone who isn't a hypersensitive snowflake who's scared of girls working out or making out, that's what you're supposed to do
I think worst year in gaming (in 21 century, not including pandemic year) is 2012. Very boring year.
People used to think the end of the world was near... they put the numbers in the wrong way xd
Yea, and .... WiiU
2020 was decent release wise
E.t was really bad
it was the last straw for many Atari families as they were sick of being screwed over with poor quality games, hence why Nintendo took a policy that a company could only release one game a year for the NES, it didnt stop bad games from coming to the platform, but it easily kept it to a minimum.
@@UltimateGamerCC
Gamers insisted on playing it by just blindly falling into holes, completely unaware of ET's context sensitive powers.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 yes i know they created separate publishers to loophole it, but still it cut the shit down a whole lot compared to Atari that was flooded like hell, kept all but the big publishers under control.
@@UltimateGamerCC
Agreed, but even 10 games per year was keeping the big publishers under control.
Check out LJN's Knight Rider and compare it to Ocean's on the Spectrum/C64. Or look at a game like Super Monkey Daiboken...there's nothing that awful on NES.
Except for the unlicensed Action 52.
good lord peter this was bad
super mario bros came out in 1985 not 1983
we just had an aniversary celebration this is embarassing
if you wanna say mario bros arcade say it and don't show footage super mario bros...
Coming here in 2022 and seeing 2021... Yeah I agree. It wasn't a very good year overall. Had some good games but not enough to drag it from the hole it dug for itself
Just like an e3 nintendo's output has a lot on it for determining good years in gaming.. no wonder last year sucked
2020 had shortages of new consoles. Nearly 2 years later that's still the case!! Poor form Sony and Microsoft! Very poor.
Great video
My hilight of 2003 was Thug 1
Hi Pete's mum🖐️
2021 is bad so far, not because of any bad game but because nothing released at all, besides far cry 6
Oh no my Barth year is number 9
I'm super excited for games releasing in 2021. It's the most excited I've been in years? I really don't get how it's on this list.
Because it's been absolute trash for 6 months so far?
2019 should of been on here

I’m so glad Anita and her money grabbing hands have faded into irrelevance
Agreed.
