One of the best yet! So many things I would say are 100%. I retired a year ago and I almost have all the same feelings.. Always learn. Even when working every Xmas I would buy a book about something I had no idea about, Roman history, Geology, Politics, just learn something that seems very off topic. You'll be amazed how much you can apply to very different topics. Driving some where, even on the way to work, go a completely different way. Explore, there is always some thing new around the next corner. Disconnect to really connect with what is important. I also spent a lot of time on long flights. Same thing. Phone off computer off. Down time with service! Great prep for the next week!.
Yes, pick a subject and just go for it. That knowledge does have a way of coming back on you, in a good way. Flights are for letting the mind drift. And hot nuts.
I can't see how you get hate mail for your social media content. All of this has been so solid. Anyone paying attention to the likes/dislikes ratio and the comments can see that the truth really resonates. Nice job, again, Dan.
Ohhhhhh my friend. You would be amazed. When I killed my social accounts six or so years ago I got hate mail for two years. It's just what happens. I don't care much. I can be annoying because I don't like wasting time.

So I put down the phone and grabbed my copy of Barbarian Days by William Finnegan and read that instead. A fine book for all you old surfers out there looking to relive those halcyon stoke-filled days of your youth.

You and I are of the same generation with maybe a year and one half or so difference between us, but one can never be too old to be reminded of and grounded by these truths. This wisdom spans many disciplines and industries. May you never hide your light.
Between social media and watching kids all day (COVID school closures) my brain was mush. Highly agree with reading in the AM before the phone comes on. It's like cognitive therapy and I'm able to concentrate better now. I have to use a Kindle though because much of my reading is while waiting for kids to fall asleep in the dark (backlit paper white is a godsend).
That's reason enough. And anything that gets you to read, ultimately, is good. I have a Kindle as well but only use it when traveling. There is something about paper that makes me brain feel at home.

Mr Milnor, if you haven't read John Gray's "Straw Dogs," I highly recommend it. Also his latest, "Feline Philosophy." Enjoyed the talk. Like you said, these are stuff we should not have to think too hard about, and should be a reflexive part of our living. But it's still good to be reminded.

I never understood the whole 'free from film and processing costs' when digital came along...most photographers would add a 100% mark up to those costs, which you certainly couldn't with digital work!

And there was a big discussion about photographers charging for digital processing time. Initial we did...now we don't!

In the back of my mind wondering why though as what do I want out of it, I’m a bankers mason (carve stone old buildings restoration). Wouldn’t mine adding photo prints sales to that as enjoy making and showing. But I don’t know sounds like it is all I bit of a shit sort of world to get into. I only shoot RAW. And clients I work with only want RAW. But everybody shoots for different reasons and has different needs. When I do doubles they are jpg.

There isn't anything wrong with taking time and struggling in order to express our creativity or learn a skill for once we succeed the satisfaction we get is complete for that moment .. Digital automation and computerisation of photography is now is starting to spoil this for those of us who only photograph for pleasure and the love of it .. long live film, the print and the darkroom and my only hope would be to make camera clubs or societies nicer more positive places to be and devoid of any unproductive criticism and negative practices and comments , I have a dream that camera clubs could once again rival online sites in regards to we were go to make and show negatives and prints and share processes and ideas were young and old can mix and be with one another, help one another , share ideas and collaborate in person in an unexclusive fully inclusive environment ... You should have seem what happened in LA when clients found out they could shoot 40 rolls of 220 per day and spend LESS than shooting digital.

I only shoot RAW. And clients I work with only want RAW. But everybody shoots for different reasons and has different needs. When I do doubles they are jpg.
@@DANIELMILNOR505 card 1 CF express type B gets raw and jpg, uhs-2 card in slot 2 gets jpg. Going to be getting a 2 TB card for slot 1 so I can just forget about it and leave my archiving for another day in the year 2344. Thanks for the geek chat.

Carmen....believe it or now, internet is an endangered species in my neighborhood so if I have any heavy lifting to do online I have to drive to get internet.......so, on a day where I have five or six calls for Blurb I have to be in the van the entire day.

Think we are all just need to rebel against the consent onslaught of marketing and advertising campaigns and the consent automation and computerisation of everything and anything , photography is art after all , it should be the most manually purist thing we choose to do .. There isn't anything wrong with taking time and struggling in order to express our creativity or learn a skill for once we succeed the satisfaction we get is complete for that moment .. Digital automation and computerisation of photography is now is starting to spoil this for those of us who only photograph for pleasure and the love of it ..
long live film, the print and the darkroom and my only hope would be to make camera clubs or societies nicer more positive places to be and devoid of any unproductive criticism and negative practices and comments , I have a dream that camera clubs could once again rival online sites in regards to we were go to make and show negatives and prints and share processes and ideas were young and old can mix and be with one another, help one another , share ideas and collaborate in person in an unexclusive fully inclusive environment ...
