As a trainer of 20+ years, trader and instructor, I have to say most of these "how to buy your first horse" videos make me cringe and want to scream. I am very pleased with the content in this video and I feel you covered the basics nicely. Well done.
Poot I do see that. I have seen so many cases of people who are new to horse keeping, end up buying the "perfect/bomp proof" horse that ends up needing a bunch of training and ends up being sold again.
Personally I don't think people 100% new to horses should even buy a horse. I'd recommend leasing for a long time until they are more ready for ownership.
Poot I agree. People just don't realize that keeping a horse is hard work and really expensive. They need to be ready to be broke so their horse can be "rich" 😂
Your mare is so patient and calm! My grandmas mare would have just walked off without a care in the world😝 This was a very good video as well, thank you for all your information!
I was cantering on my horse yesterday and I went over a jump and he lost his balance and fell and I flew off and he fell on me. Disclaimer: we are both alright
This video has helped me so much. We are moving to a 38 acre property and getting a horse. I've grew up around horses and always wanted one of my own. I took horse back riding lessons and finally I'm getting my own. Thanks
Trying a horse for the first time on sunday and im very excited and hope it all works out! Ive been riding for 9 years and have been going on lease horses for a while now and it pains me to see young people who just start buying horses. Thank you for this!
area3eventing how did that go? It's super exciting! I've been riding about a year now and I'm thinking about my first lease horse. I'll start leasing once I move to a jumping barn 😊
J R Huh? She’s just asking a question... don’t lash out, seems she’s watched other videos to know Happytails has a lot of animals. :) don’t be sarcastic it’s not very nice.
I hate it when people with barely any experience go out and buy like a young Arabian mare or something like that's not really ok. I've leased two horses in my life before and have been riding for 8 years (or more). I hopefully will be getting a horse soon! :) Thanks for the video!
Grace Clark Dear Grace, I rode owned showed horses for over 60 years, the difference is if you lease a horse, you put all the hard work into it school it feed it ut at the end of the lease you have to return it to the owner, you do not own it. When you buy a horse you own it, it belongs to you, when you school it , you school it for yourself, you feed it for yourself, you alone make the decisions about what you want to do with it, show it, jump it, event it. The animal belongs to you, and if it turns out good, you can sell the animal if you want too, you don't have to, hand it back after putting in a lot of hard work and get no reward for spending all the time you put into that particular horse. I hope the next horse you have you will own it. GREETINGS FROM NORTHERN IRELAND.
I just have to say to say that your horse looks to be the most contented animal I've ever seen outside maybe my own dog. I can watch this video over and over just watching her. .. Wilburrrrrrr...
Omg thank you so much 😊 my dad has said he will get me a horse 🐴 so this is so helpful seeing as he has no experience. 🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🏇🏽🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠
Thx very helpful. If you can could you please make a video about what you need to look at when you go look for a new horse and what you need to check on it before buying it
My horses live both in stall and in pasture. My horses Ti, Hershey, Angel, and Pronto live in a huge pasture in the spring and summer where there is lots of grass. Also, In the spring and summer they don’t ear hay, they just eat grass, chaff in thier buckets and a little bit of grain. In the winter and fall, they are stalled in oversized stalls and eat hay and grain. (Chaff counts as forage so I guess they eat hay)
Your channel is so amazing! it is so true that horses are large and majestic. The worst case sanario with a horse is if they are a little too determand. My relatives own a farm and have horses, their friend boards two horses at the farm. When my cousin and I were six, and my siblings were two and four we heard an awfle shreak come from the pasture. On of the two boarding horses got tangled in the fence. All of the adults told us five kids to stay inside. (two cousins, my siblings and me.) We sat at the window and watched the adults franticly cut the electric fence off of the horse. My little three year old cousin screamed, my sister sobbed, and my brother ran into the bathroom to hide. My cousin and I, being only six stared in utter horror. The horse got free and was fine after that but he still was scared for life. Mentally and pysicly. All of this had started for a bite of grass on the other side of the fence. Thank you for showing the importants of a proper encloser.
I have been riding and taking care of horses for a long time now, but still, I don't feel ready yet... Not because of money (and I am broke...), and not because of time (I don't have a lot of time either, but yea...), but because of experiences. I have a lot of experiences, but it feels like that I don't have enought... I am doing the first year of agricultre, Forestry and Fishing, and we have horses there too and I chosed to be with the horses. I have learned a lot, but I need more. I am reading about horses when I have time and when I feel for it and I know what breed I want (I want the Norwegian Lyngen Horse, Haflinger, Icelandic Horse, etc), but I want to wait a bit more too. For me, I think that's the best for me and the futured horse :) But I'm very glad that you made this video, so I can take this with me :)
Really good sensible info into the all important basics ...I'm very impressed with this...your delivery is also very refreshing...not ego fuelled and self absorbed. Very helpful and pleasant...the horseworld needs more people like you...I hope yr continuing ..
Also horses can sense how your feeling. So act calm be the bigger person. I have been around 27 horses for almost a year now every week. I go horse back riding and your posture how your feeling is everything so don't be afraid heck I want to own a Shire cause they are my fav horse but unfortunately I have to start with a smaller horse like a quarter. You don't wanna go big and you also have to now you have a connection with that horse like if you were buying a horse you should come back to the dealer each week and spend each time with each horse for 5-10 minutes and which ever horse that you know you feel closer to and the horse as well then buy that horse. I can already tell that Rainbow and Megan have a good connection because Megan can trust Rainbow without holding her lead that she will not run or walk away. This is why you also have to have a connection with the horse you buy.
My barn provides hay but you have to muck out all the stalls once a week there is only 8 stalls though and the indoor arena is a little small but once I can drive I’m moving him/her to a different barn
Im seeing these everywhere and have been thinking about it a lot, sadly my parents are definitely not getting me a horse. But it can’t be a coincidence I’m seeing these videos everywhere on my recommandation page😅
Hi I’m 11 and I started riding horse when I was 5 and loved it I started leasing a horse named Malibu when I was 6 but two years after that I couldn’t lease him anymore so I leased a pony named chippy, I was the only one who could ride him without chippy freaking out and about 4 months after came Christmas and my parents bought him for me and he was 26 at the time and we were the perfect pair he was a gelding and sometimes would bolt but personally it was easy to handle. I had chippy for two long and happy years then he passed away and it took about 4 months to find another horse named Zoe who was the sweetest and most calm girl and I didn’t want her but we still got her and as soon as he got her I renamed her Callie and now I’ve had her almost a year, I couldn’t be happier. And I want to say you did really good at explaining al this to someone who hasn’t owned a horse before 😊👍🏻
I have being riding for over one year now and I have worked at the stable before a few times manly mucking out the stables, helping with the morning routine, making theirs beds for the night, taking them up and a few other jobs important for their health and safety. I am hoping you get my first job up there so I can make up the money to buy my own horse while working there hopefully as my some of my family also know the owners would asking them be a good tip? Also love these videos really helpful
That was great, I'm in the market for my first horse so the vet and farrier tip just makes sense. I really want one of those grey horses that turn white that would be sick but maybe not logical. I liked the little goat they are awsome I love how they jump on your back.
I am going to buy one of the horses I already ride in lessons :) She was used for research before my instructor rescued her, so she gets grumpy sometimes :/ But she doesn't buck, is trained for the level I am comfortable going in eventing, and is super sweet :) I love your vids! Thanks so much for all the advice!
Currently on the look for my first horse, I’ve been looking for years and finally found one I’m interested in, I help out at a rescue with horses when I visit Florida and I also go to the ranch with my friend and learn everything I can about horses to gain that experience, will also be getting lessons even though I’m learning to ride Better with my friends horse. Great advice ❤️ The one question I’m always stuck on is ‘What are you looking for?’ I get anxiety talking to people I don’t really know hah, but I know I’m looking for a calm collected horse with the possibility of being able to do trails and jumping.
I'm so lucky I bought my horse after 3 years of leasing him. no need to go from barn to barn trying horses! As someone who has been at no/half/full service barn, I recommend splurging for a full service barn if you are a beginner. Board is expensive, but the safety is most important to me! I have a Quarter horse, and he is great because I can school him up to my level myself, or have my trainer ride. He doesn't jump as high as other hunters, but I don't have a desire to jump higher. (: I'd love to see some clips of you riding.
That's awesome! I thought about putting clips in this video but lately the temperature has been about 110 which I think is just too hot to do anything. When I filmed this in the late evening it was still about 96 degrees. It was so hot! I will definitely film myself riding in the future :D
I love your horse! She's so laid back like one of my mares I own. I do barrel racing and pleasure. Also on a more random note I love Caspian and (I don't know the other dog) fighting in the background 😂
Also thank you for including that people need to see the horse ridden first! Most people don't mention that and I worry for the beginners buying horses as they don't know to ask. Or in some cases are scared or nervous to ask very many questions.
I did one mistake potentially buying a horse... I got on without seeing the owner on and I got bucked off. The horse turned into a full on bronc and the sadle completely tipped with me still on it. We later realised the horse was drugged and the man tried to take advantage of the fact that it was our first time buying a horse. So make sure to always make the owner do it and don't put yourself in danger.😊
Such a helpful video I’m also getting or leasing a horse I’ve had a few years experience not just riding but caring and I’ve done tons and tons of research
I have a friend who has 3 horses and when ever I go to hers I will ride her horse and help feed them after (and sometimes I will even help tack the horse up if she needs help) P.s I am not a professional at horse riding I just like riding them and helping tack up
.... 3 questions... 1. How much Like a month does a Horse Cost 2. Where are some good places to Buy horses 3. Just wondering What type of bit or Mostly tack is best?
Grim tail But if you don't buy it won't hurt them either cause they'll just go to slaughter to get sold as meat and food overseas. The reason people adopt is so that most of these horses don't fall prey to this. The more horses adopted and kept in the US or other countries with good homes, then less and less can be used for meat and food and the equine food delicacy plummets. But I don't condone people running out to save horses if they cant proved the help and care it needs. Thats like moving a horse from one prison to the next only this time it'll be alive longer to suffer. Adopt and Rescue horses if you've done your reaserch and can provide vet, training, food, and shealter for the animal.
I'm 6"2 and I ride a 15hh ottb and I make it look like a 13hh pony but my other horses are 17 hh Appaloosa Thoroughbred and a 3 year old 16hh hackney Clyde cross
My dad owns 5 Chuckwagon thoroughbreds (he had 20 before he took a break) I've been living around horses most of my life until my mom moved our family to the city. My mom and dad decided to buy an acreage and my dads getting me a horse. I thought horses weren't scary and I could lead them to the barn and all that, but I went to my dads farm (where he keeps his horses. It just has a gate and some trucks) and I went up to them and I was terrified. I've forgotten how to deal with horses!! I don't know how I'm gonna deal with my own horse, but over time I'll get used to him/Her. It takes time. Great video by the way!
Julie Bruns Julie if you want to adopt a horse , you need to apply to,a rescue centre Horse Trust , R.S.PC.A These people nearly always have horses for adoption. When you adopt a horse, these organisations will do,research on you, where are you going to keep the horse do you own land, do you have your own stable or are you going to put the horse into livery, and if you are, can you afford to keep the horse. When you adopt a horse from these societies you do not really own it, you cannot sell the horse , when you don't want the horse ,or if your circumstances chance and you can't afford to keep the horse any longer, the horse is normally returned to the society you got it from, If you purchase the horse for a small amount of money from the council pound, it is a different set of circumstances, you own that horse, you have bought it with no warranty, you take it with all its faults, there is no return, you may be lucky and get a decent horse this way with little money, but it is rare, these are horses picked up off waste ground or around towns and their owners cannot be traced . I still, advise if you do not know what you are doing and looking for a decent horse, go,to,a good auctioneer at a recognised horse sale, put your cards on the table, tell him what you are looking for and take his advice, bring someone to the sale with you, that is knowledgeable, that knows a horse and get him or her to look at the animal that takes your fancy. The warranties are in writing, the vets certificate is in the sales office and can be viewed, you can ride the horse around the sale ring, gives you a good idea what it is like to ride in company , horses people lorries all around, make your mind up , and then bid for him if you like him, if he leaves the ring unsold have a word with the auctioneer to reserve price, you may still buy him, Please be aware , if you try to do deals outside the ring and buy the horse outside the sale yard, the auctioneer or staff will not be able to help you of something goes wrong when you get the horse home, you will have conducted a private sale and the onus is on you yourself, so please buy your horse through the auctioneer and pay for him through their office. That gives you a week to try him out and that the warranty is correct . You can return the horse if you find the warranty or if the horse has been wrongly described, and your money refunded. You cannot return him because you have changed your mind, or you don't like his colour anymore. I hope this helps you . Greetings from Northern Ireland.
Awesome video! Wish I knew those things before getting my first horse. Luckily it worked out! Can you do a video on what you feed Rainbow? I'm looking into getting my horse off grains and onto something he can actually eat.
Since I live in a field type place, I've been wanting a horse...not just because I live near the fields, but because I've never had one, and it is everything to me that horses exists. How do you...like...get a field? How much money would it be?

+Mary Cook thanks!
Mary Cook thank u for the help I ride and love horses and I am capable of looking after them I'm truly exited to get my first
and my aunty owns a field and my uncles a breeder farrier and trainer
I have been riding since I was 2 1/2 😍😍😍
Annabelle Chua-Tran it's not dangerous if know how to do it. I do it and I'm fine and alive.
wait what? People actually buy horses without seeing them in person first? That seems like a lot of money to be throwing away.
animalobsessed1 I know!
Actually it's not that uncommon to do that, especially overseas or with weanlings/yearlings.
Poot I do see that. I have seen so many cases of people who are new to horse keeping, end up buying the "perfect/bomp proof" horse that ends up needing a bunch of training and ends up being sold again.

Your mare is so patient and calm! My grandmas mare would have just walked off without a care in the world😝 This was a very good video as well, thank you for all your information!
I might get a horse 🐎! But I will keep it at a horse stable because there is not enough room at my house
Same I live in big island.
How can someone be so lucky to own a horse😭😭😭😭
Wow lucky I ride my cow 😂
same
tianti burrows wow I’m moving from Oahu there and am trying to purchase a horse but I can’t find any :(
I was cantering on my horse yesterday and I went over a jump and he lost his balance and fell and I flew off and he fell on me.
Disclaimer: we are both alright
OH NO!Thankfully your ok
Good thing ur alright and the horse of course
I hope you and your horse are alright! Be careful
You are right horses are not easy!! It is very clear that you love your horse.

That horse is absolutly gorgeous!!
Do you live on a ranch? That seems to be the only logical explanation for the amount of animals you have.
Wow, OMGOSH, I didn't realize that 4 animals were considered a ranch, (I'm being sarcastic) that's not all of animals
No they are to teach people on how to care for and become friends with them as she said in the intro
J R Huh? She’s just asking a question... don’t lash out, seems she’s watched other videos to know Happytails has a lot of animals. :) don’t be sarcastic it’s not very nice.
Country Life she has a lot more then 4

Dude I thought she was a kid at first
Is rainbow a mustang? I see what looks like a mustang brand on her neck
+Tiro Wolfe yes she is 😄
Thats really awesome! I love to see more people taking in the wild horses :) Definitely a dream of mine to become skilled enough to keep a mustang.
Thank you :)
Is how much does rainbow cost per year?
Tiro Wolfe mustangs are freely roaming horses so there is no way 🦄

Yep. Can't argue with any of that. All good common sense advice.
However, I kept worrying about the halter/headcollar on Rainbow.

Also thank you for including that people need to see the horse ridden first! Most people don't mention that and I worry for the beginners buying horses as they don't know to ask. Or in some cases are scared or nervous to ask very many questions.
Hello, I am getting my own horse soon and I found this very helpful, I would also find it very helpful if you could post some more videos about horses
Glad it helped! I'll do more horse videos soon!
+Happy Tails thank you
Horses are my favorite animal
I have 6 horse and I love him.. And I grew up with them.. Not trying to brag but I love them so much please notice this
so informative you should do a live Q and A I have lots of questions
awww, Rainbow got sleepy and is acting SO cute!!!! X3
Such a helpful video I’m also getting or leasing a horse I’ve had a few years experience not just riding but caring and I’ve done tons and tons of research
my favorite animal is a horse and i always wanted one and i grew up watching horse videos and movies and have horse stuff and i rode a horse before
I have a friend who has 3 horses and when ever I go to hers I will ride her horse and help feed them after (and sometimes I will even help tack the horse up if she needs help)
P.s I am not a professional at horse riding I just like riding them and helping tack up
Ive always wanted my own horse their my favorite animal

I love your horse soo much I have 6 horses I've always wanted a Mustang
Rainbow 🌈 is so beautiful 😍
Can you please do a video about not just about owning the horse but trimming vets expenses and all the complicated stuff about owning one
.... 3 questions...
1. How much Like a month does a Horse Cost
2. Where are some good places to Buy horses
3. Just wondering What type of bit or Mostly tack is best?
Love horses and your video about your horse
I love your horse rainbow😻😻😻
Thank you I am a kid but I will try for one my whole life
Need to see more horses
I know it's late, but can you show all your supplies for rainbow? *EDIT* Consider that buying from an auction encourages the abusers.
I’m getting a horse! 💙 I’m so excited 😆
I'm 6"2 and I ride a 15hh ottb and I make it look like a 13hh pony but my other horses are 17 hh Appaloosa Thoroughbred and a 3 year old 16hh hackney Clyde cross

These are very good to know 👏🏽👏🏽
I Love Your Horse! I love horses in all!
I love your parrot and lizard and also your horse
Your horse is so beautiful!
Thank you!
Can you do a video of what to consider if you want to adopt a horse?
Julie Bruns Julie if you want to adopt a horse , you need to apply to,a rescue centre Horse Trust , R.S.PC.A These people nearly always have horses for adoption. When you adopt a horse, these organisations will do,research on you, where are you going to keep the horse do you own land, do you have your own stable or are you going to put the horse into livery, and if you are, can you afford to keep the horse. When you adopt a horse from these societies you do not really own it, you cannot sell the horse , when you don't want the horse ,or if your circumstances chance and you can't afford to keep the horse any longer, the horse is normally returned to the society you got it from,
If you purchase the horse for a small amount of money from the council pound, it is a different set of circumstances, you own that horse, you have bought it with no warranty, you take it with all its faults, there is no return, you may be lucky and get a decent horse this way with little money, but it is rare, these are horses picked up off waste ground or around towns and their owners cannot be traced .
