  • 'Why does the Royal Family need seven palaces funded by us? Why can't they go and live in a flat and ride around on bicycles?'
Matthew Wright concurs with caller Darren, who believes the UK should adopt a 'slimmed down' monarchy.

Per the Sovereign Grant Act of 2011, the Monarchy is funded as a percentage of earnings of the Crown Estate (a property portfolio owned by the Crown). In the past, King George III exchanged the Crown Estate for a steady income from the government, called the "Civil List".Sep 12, 2023

It’s the people who go on about how the royals bring in x amount of pounds to the UK economy that do my head in. People come to see the buildings and will do so whether the royals are still living in them or not. Many traditions like the changing of the guard happen whether the royals are in residence or not and still many, if not most tourists in London will go to see it at least once.
The last time a royal stayed in the Tower of London was James VI in 1603 when he stayed there overnight upon his entry to London and it still does pretty well on the tourism front. I also bet there’d be a fairly long queue if people were charged a fee to sit on or stand beside the throne to have their photo taken.

Then let's randomly choose a new family, and they can become a monarch and employ all those people.
Every four years a new random family can be chosen.
Or does it have to be this family?

@c.c.8841 the lottery system would be fairer. And they'd be replaced every four years.

perhaps move to a country without a monarchy if you don't want to live in a country with a monarchy

Why should citizens have to accept everything about a country to live in it? Based on that we should have no elections and change no laws, as if you don't like it...move to a country with the laws you want.

Perhaps, if you want to live under a Monarch, you should choose a country without a parliament providing checks and balances to a Monarch's Absolute Rule....
There's very little difference between a monarch and dictator. Perhaps North Korea or Iran is more up your street 🤔.....

Andrew for king the most integral of the family fabulous morals and a great ambassador for our British values we hold in such high esteem King Andrew would be the perfect example of royal exceptionalism a natural leader with a pedigree akin to the woodwose of the forest tremendous at associating with convicted child abusers shows his credibility and honesty
