- 'Why does the Royal Family need seven palaces funded by us? Why can't they go and live in a flat and ride around on bicycles?'
Matthew Wright concurs with caller Darren, who believes the UK should adopt a 'slimmed down' monarchy.
#matthewwright #royalfamily #kingcharles #LBC
Definitely. 7 palaces 10 castles 6 country estates and £120 million a year income. £3.3 million heating bill every year. Grotesque.
Also large swathes of our countries land
B-b-but the tourissmmmm 😭😭
@thighg8744 tourism has fallen off a cliff since Brexit and France always got three times as many tourists as the UK.
Hey,they are only benefits, cheat family and lazy too.
That argument is moot because regardless of whether the Royal family were living in those palaces we would still be paying for them. They are the property of the UK. Did you think we would let them go to wrack and ruin?
Considering Charles inherited his mother’s £650 million pound fortune why do the monarchy need public funds at all?
they dont they give there money to the gov and the gov gives them some back
Per the Sovereign Grant Act of 2011, the Monarchy is funded as a percentage of earnings of the Crown Estate (a property portfolio owned by the Crown). In the past, King George III exchanged the Crown Estate for a steady income from the government, called the "Civil List".Sep 12, 2023
the £120 million a year they get is far too much and should be spent building affordable homes for young people in places like Cornwall, for example.
What's the inheritance tax on £650M?
@philip013 the Royals are the only family in the UK which DO NOT pay inheritance tax. They are exempt.
With or without tax payers money, the British Crown is the richest of all royal families around the globe, i think their only financial equivalents are the Golf royal families. They will never suffer financial problems. The king of the UK is literally the wealthiest land owner in the world. THESE PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE GETTING A PENNY OF TAX MONEY.
No more royalty, time for change!
Maybe the ones in the wax works can do a stand in, just as active and a bit cheaper?
The Royal Family should be treated the same as every other family on welfare. It’s only fair
The greatest con played upon the British people is the idea that the monarchy somehow exists for the benefit of the average person.
You’ll get millions of people insisting that Charles needs seven palaces and a golden throne because it’s part of their culture
It's not just the lifestyle but the political interference too. We should just get rid.
How much did his coronation cost us and what did the tax payers alliance have to say about this?
How much money did it generate
@@brianhannon3253 it would have generated the same amount of money at a quarter of the cost.
@@brianhannon3253 Not as much as you might think. A lot of other attractions across the country shut down for the Coronation - which likely reduced the amount of money the country generated.
Yes totally agree , European Royalty are doing extremely well , slimmed down …
The Royal Family are out dated now , and need a new younger fresher leadership!.
Not stuck in the bygone ages !..
Charlie boy, the NHS queue jumper.
You honestly think Charles used the NHS? No chance..
He went private so zero queue jumping. Google is your friend.
You’re thinking of illegals!
charlie boy the royal voluntary service founder.
@@rayvinloony2322The Royals are immigrants
So agree! Most European Royals don't live in such opulent luxury. The Belgian royals live in one palace only. They get one million euros 💶 per annum as a state stipend
Plus they use the tram, state cars only come out for special occasions.
@@deliciouslyk3437lol you want high profile targets like the royal family on trams? 😂😂
No. The government spends about £120 Billion more than it raises in tax every year. It has to borrow from the Chinese etc to make up the deficit. This is why we have a national debt of £2.7 Trillion. To spend so much on the Royals, given these dire economic circumstances, seems ridiculous and extravagant.
@@nickdoughty518 we don’t spend on the royals if you look up what the sovereign grant is?
@@Philljag they receive a vast income that could be better spent on affordable homes for local young people.
Time for the Royal Family to go.
As long as there private land is returned to them ok
Long past time!
You first
Seeing as there paid for out of crown estates not tax you don’t pay for them
Balderdash, we pay far too much for them! One penny is too much to pay for people who serve no purpose or function.
Go off and live in one place, all other places to be used by and for the state.
Buckingham Palace would be used to house people claiming asylum within the week.
They do not own the palaces the state own them so your wrong
No, you are wrong. They own outright Balmoral and Sandringham estates. The other 21 palaces, castles and country houses we have no right to use. Why do they need so many?
@@nickdoughty518’grrrr they have something I don’t do let me argue why I should have it!’
Palaces, castles and country estates should be handed over to the National Trust so they could support themselves. Royal family could book the residence out for their holidays then back to NT public visiting - the tourists would pay a fortune to see inside them
Nah don't think so,,,
Most of them are already, what is wrong with people lol
They already have commercially rented apartments in St James’ Palace, but the housing benefit wouldn’t touch the sides of the rent. 🤷♂️
A lot of this argument is "I don't have it so neither should they" jealousy driven nonsense. I do agree with the seven palace point made...but be realistic.
Pointing out wretched excess isn’t jealousy.
They do have their own money it’s invested in our land and industry. If people took the time to look they do earn substantial amount of money. Besides our taxes and support to them.
Yes fully agree with the scale down and it would then show that they are doing it.
Glory to the King! We will surrender nothing.
Just you then..
@@leekelly9639 your here so….
Don't get the royal thing at all ???
Never did !!
France seems to do alright without them😮.
Really? Are you serious?
@@mikemacdt1 Ehhh ye. Have you been to France?
@@mikemacdt1Are you being serious?
Convert Buckingham Palace into social housing. Same with Windsor Castle.
Well said matthew .👍
Abolish the Monarchy
They can have 7 palaces if they want, but they should pay rent on them (plus utilities etc.) to us. If they then don't want any we'll take them back and do something with them. They should also all pay tax and have all laws apply to them like anyone else.
They do pay tax.
You don't know how anything works.
They are eating caviar and whatever else you can buy in harrods whilst the rest of us are off to foodbanks to eat ultra processed shitfoods.
Size all the Royal money and land then give the Monarchy 48 hours to leave the country, NEVER to return...!
Please don't make them blame PH for it 🤭
I'd rather you left the country to be fair leave the royal family alone.
So you prefer the Leninist method of removing royalty?
Lets have 10 ex presidents instead living at the expense of the tax payers for the rest of their lives..
Cap royal expenditure to £221.20 a week, like the rest of us will get at that age.
Britain’s biggest benefit scroungers.
Immigrant family living in a Palace at the taxpayers expense the daily mail are hypocrites 😅
The trouble is they are the royal family… they own this country
They know that the pomp is the most important factor. Monarchy is a confidence trick and without bling no one will fall for it.
Because he is the King and having a King makes us strong. 🤦🏻♂️🏴
Pretty soon the balcony will only have, Charles, William & Camilla standing on it
I can't stand Charles and Camilla..
It’s the people who go on about how the royals bring in x amount of pounds to the UK economy that do my head in. People come to see the buildings and will do so whether the royals are still living in them or not. Many traditions like the changing of the guard happen whether the royals are in residence or not and still many, if not most tourists in London will go to see it at least once.
The last time a royal stayed in the Tower of London was James VI in 1603 when he stayed there overnight upon his entry to London and it still does pretty well on the tourism front. I also bet there’d be a fairly long queue if people were charged a fee to sit on or stand beside the throne to have their photo taken.
Holland isn’t a country, it’s called the Netherlands. 🇳🇱
THEY DON’T PAY INHERITANCE TAX YET TAKE MONEY FROM TAXPAYERS ! They are Scroungers ! !!!
Only the monarch doesn’t pay inheritance tax on passing on State assets from one Monarch to the next as they aren’t owned by the individual. The other members of the family are liable to the same inheritance tax liabilities as everyone else.
In these days of austerity, its obscene. Don't understand why we have to bow and tug our forelocks. They're just humans, not special.
Windsor Great Estate/Castle, St. James Palace,
Buckingham Palace, Holyrood House and some
other properties are owned by the Crown (indirectly
the people/ the country, as are the crown jewels)
The monarch owns Balmoral castle, Sandringham
House/Estate. Charles, personally, not as the
monarch owns Highgrove House and a country
home in/near a royal estate near Balmoral.
True.
The properties of the crown are properties of the state.
Yes,yes, yes, abolish bad journalism ,no chance
Don't scale it down. Either have a proper Monarchy or just abolish it. The Norwegian, Dutch, Beligian etc Monarchies aren't worth having.
And replace all the majesty, history, tradition with what? Culturally we would be much worse off without them.
What a poor culture if it depends on royals to have one.
They're shameless! I wont stand for the "they dont know better"
Excellent suggestions, thank you
Maybe the interviewer should live in a pokey flat and also go to work on a bike.
The Royal family are incredibly rich and make their own money. Just stop publicly funding them.
But it's money they stole from my ancestors. I would like it back.
They also enjoy the privilege of being given prior warning on bills and legislation which may directly impact their personal fortunes. The Monarch's lawyers effectively dictate the terms of any such proposed legislation so that it does not effect the royals.
I heard that princess Charlotte is the wealthiest child in the world
@@2k50neil what ancestors are those?
Least of the problems in this country.
Rich people living on benefits
When was the last referendum about Monarchy in UK?
Last referendum?
PRINCE Charles
Multiple Palaces is a thing in many countries for Monarchs and Presidents. I think it is geographical so that leadership is spread around. Small countries do not need so many buildings. If the Monarchy gave way to a president we should still need the buildings.
Absolutely ❤
Stick him in a state run OAP home and he can see how his subjects live
The monarchy makes the uk more money than it takes. Inland revenue take all of there profits made from assets they hold then give a percentage back for the general up keep of castles. Not a penny of the tax payers money gets spent on them more so the other way around. They can not sell those assets and the estate made about 320 million last year that went straight to the treasury.
I am neither here nor there when it comes to the monarchy but i do get fed up of everyone spouting off about all of the money side without knowing any facts about it.
Note: I am not talking about their personal wealth which is seperated from the monarchy’s assets
LBC stirring it all up as usual, gets them clicks though
YEKATERINBURG!!!
Keeps us in our place doesnt it?
Are they just here for the tourists to gawp at?
Probably. I still find it amazing that the discredited they bring in the tourists argument is still a thing. Its not true.
Tourism has fallen off a cliff since Brexit. France gets three times as many tourists as the UK.
@@AreJayCeeIt’s as big as the fallacy of costing everybody just one cent. It doesn’t matter if that is true, take that cent and pool it, now you have in excess of 300 hundred million pounds! Imagine what that could do year after year.
Go after the sycophantic press that are genuflecting hoping for orders of the British empire, they are propping up the whole thing!
@@nickdoughty518no since the pandemic. Plus things here are too expensive.
@deliciouslyk3437 no. Tourists now need full passports to come from the EU. Previously they didn't and this has put them off.
No mention that they contribute on average over a billion a year to the UK economy through various means both direct and indirect.
Let's just ignore that detail and complain about them.
I think the palaces and historical places are the main draw for tourists.
If it's the royal family themselves that everyone comes to see, then they can visit them at their flat.
The thing people always forget is how much land they own as a family which has been given in trust to the country (the Crown Estate). The income from that property - which goes to the government - FAR exceeds the income they receive from the state. They could be FAR richer if they reclaimed the land that is theirs
The Crown estate has always been owned by the state. It was never owned by the royal family.
It used to be managed by the monarch, originally to fund the government. The monarch is the head of state.
It didn't personally belong to the king or queen. It belonged to the crown.
Equally, things that currently belong to the monarch are not owned by King Charles as a private individual.
What right wing ??
commies
Put them on the dole
wether we like King charles and the rest of them, lets not forget the revenue the uk would lose without all the foreign tourists coming to catch a glimpse of the royals...they also pay taxes just like the late queen did
Tourism has fallen off a cliff since Brexit and anyway France has always attracted three times as many tourists as the UK. And they chopped the heads off their Royals!
every royal is also a patron of at least one charity.
France gets three times as many tourists as the UK and they chopped the heads off their Royals! An opportunity for more tourist revenue, perhaps?

Every four years a new random family can be chosen.
Or does it have to be this family?
@@robertgould1345 would you be jealous of who got chosen ? and what if they were incapable of maintaining the position.
@c.c.8841 the lottery system would be fairer. And they'd be replaced every four years.
perhaps move to a country without a monarchy if you don't want to live in a country with a monarchy
Why should citizens have to accept everything about a country to live in it? Based on that we should have no elections and change no laws, as if you don't like it...move to a country with the laws you want.
Perhaps, if you want to live under a Monarch, you should choose a country without a parliament providing checks and balances to a Monarch's Absolute Rule....
There's very little difference between a monarch and dictator. Perhaps North Korea or Iran is more up your street 🤔.....
Nuts.
Thanks to people like you, who voted for brexit, we no longer have the freedom to go live in another country.
