  • ‘Why don’t you go to sea?!
Wow, that was a statement; this would never have entered my mind and in all innocence asked,
    ‘Is that possible?’
‘That’s no problem, all you have to do is get your passport and seaman’s book and there you go!’
After work and on my way home (and until today I didn’t know what came over me) I decided to see my Nan and told her as to what had happened and this bizarre suggestion in going to sea!
‘Why is it bizarre, Nan asked
‘I don’t know!’ Although I was born near the water and cycled many times to the harbour of Rotterdam and seeing the large passenger liners neatly moored behind one another, and powerful tugs manoeuvring large cargo liners into their berth; but I never dreamed in going on the water myself. To be honest, I was slightly scared of water and I didn’t swim too well either!

Lovely - we were lucky to sail on the last of ships built in the 60s. Great music accompaniment too

This was the heyday of merchant shipping, reasonable comfort, decent pay, the ability to advance and freedom to see the world.

Great video, I always liked the Royal Interocean Lines ships for their classic Dutch lines, Straat Luzon, Straat Freetown and then Safocean Albany etc, some of the Straat series had an extra length inserted midships and thus a deck crane amid derricks! Schelde Lloyd, such classic Dutch lines, those were the days. The "V" class Shell Tankers vessels were striking too, good shot of "Vlieland" (not named after a mollusc though as Shell named their ships). Thanks Bill, excellent scenes and memories.

You are welcome. I still at 76 that sailing in those days was hard but had lots of time to spend ashore. after leaving the Merchant Navy I got jobs in moving the early mass produced Motor cruisers and until now still do some as you can see on my other 3 videos.

Ugly greedy box ships destroyed the golden Era of shipping.the seamen who enjoyed the golden days were the lucky ones, most of them gone to dust by now only memories left.Ahoy to all seamen.
