Backcountry Minimalist - JUMP Cloth

  • The JUMP Cloth is an amazing piece of gear that can do and be transformed into just about anything. Any store that carries fabric can easily cut you a six foot length as bolts of cloth are sold at four feet wide. Carry with it, wear it, build with it, modify with it, but no matter what is very minimal and not a bad piece of gear to have on your person!

I keep a few airplane blankets around just for this. They're not quite as big as these but still serve the same purpose.

There is something so calming and grounded about this kind of simple minimalism. I think I would wax one of the cloths, the one used as a ground cloth. I would add a tinder pouch with flint and steel in there, probably my Hudson Bay fire tin in a sunny environment like that. Just to be able to make fire faster, and because I don't yet have Donny's level of skill with friction fire.
There is a Japanese art called Furoshiki, which is sort of like origami for cloth. There are many different patterns of folding cloth that the Japanese have come up with to create pockets, pouches, sling bags, waist bags, lots of useful things, just from a piece of cloth. I'm not sure if it's always the case but the ones I know of use a square piece of cloth. Using bandanas and shemaghs you can create so many different containers for carrying things.

I immedialty thought of the Great Kilt being from the UK and its uses are very similar. The Great Kilt used to have much of the lanolin left in the wool so it offered great protection from the elements but it was a much heavier textile, it is also very versatile with the size of the fabric being so large it could be worn in many configurations and used for shelter but it would probably be too warm and heavy for your location. On another note the color of the textile could also be used to blend you into your environment and break up you outline for hunting as the Scotts did using their Great Kilts. Thanks for the interesting video.

This, while being very different, makes me think of kilts, the way they used to be. No pleats or anything, just a big bolt of cloth that could be your blanket, your clothes, a shelter, and you could secure other items to your person by placing it between the portion that went over and around the shoulder and your body. A small bag for incidentals and a blanket pin or two, a belt if you were so inclined, and you had everything you needed to travel through the highlands. Always fascinating how so many solutions to the same concerns can be found throughout cultures, and they all have some similarities, too. Thank you for sharing.

Back to the roots he? Back to Stone Age and reanimation of the Neanderthal, so glad you took your camera with you, or we would have all missed out on it - living in the dirt, living in the good old past - that is what this world needs, it cuts down on human survival trying to survive even the simplest of health issues - like bad teeth or appendicitis - and back to the days when it was all fair game, humans were more likely to be food. It is always the question how did humanity survive -it was just pure luck!
