I feel bad for Toyota/Scion and Subaru. I remember when people loved the 150HP of the Integra Type R. Which is actually still very good for what the engine is. Almost every time I hear people talk about these new gen 86 platforms, I hear about how the 2.0L is "notoriously underpowered". For a non turbo, the HP is actually very good. For a small car, it should be adequate. I think this car gets compared to newer Civic type R or otherwise, something along the lines of a Hyundai Nanyang. Both turbo, the Nanyang is 280HP while the Civic is over 300HP. The customers buy the cars, and then race someone Ina straight line and expect it to keep up with the turbo cars. Not in stock configuration. On a track with turns, the car would be just fine. Change to some tires that have horrible wear characteristics and I'm sure this car would stick to the track. Though these aren't really meant to be straight line cars in stock form, they can be. Amazing how our perception of what good is has changed. This is not really knowledge the typical enthusiast has, but the little 2.0 has F1 engine levels of volumetric efficiency. Which means it is actually very good. 100-125+% efficient is what F1 engines used to be engineered to produce. That means a 2.0 L engine at 100% makes 200HP. It used to be considered very difficult to do without some form of forced induction. And really, probably still is depending.
It's really just the torque dip, and considering Gen 1 and Gen 2 share the same headers, and that's all it takes to get rid of the torque dip on gen 1. It's a problem, that really isn't a problem. Gen 1 cars should actually hold high value because of that, just about everything from the 22+ models is going to be hot swappable. Suspension, headers, most of the internal components not related to the boring of the engine. The car is going to have a long life. (and I just bought one, whoop!)

This is a car designed for Japan through and through really. I can see the "underpowered" argument in the us where twisty roads are few and far between, but in Europe and Asia a GT-86 is probably one of the faster cars around the roads most people live around due to its strong handling. I have always thought that it is enough power, particularly when you consider its chief rival is the Mazda MX-5.
I’ve owned an 86 but I sadly got in a wreck in it but I loved it so much, I got another one but its a BRZ. The ToyoBaru is proof that you don’t need alot of horsepower to have fun!
