Ive been a dj staff announcer since 1964. Back around 1984 I was working at WTVN 610 AM ColumbusOhio. I always did the oldies deal on weekends. Well some guy calls up and says He has some Alan Freed Show records would I like to hear them? I said When? He said he would come by the station so I could get a listen. Well an hour later he rings up and says hes out front. I put on a long record, rode the elevator down, unlocked the door and here is this guy with two BIG records under his arm. We went up to the on air studio, he takes the records out of the wrapper they were in and these were not the 33 1/3 albums but broadcast ET's Electrical transcriptions. I listened through the cue and was knocked out. Complete shows commercials the works. I asked if I could air them, right there and then. These were the shellac covered discs with the lug in them. I was doing the oldies anyway and so I just said to our listeners I had a real treat, Alan freed shows from likely 1955 or 6. I let them go non stop. Sat back in my chair and went wild. The guy was so good. The station didn't say anything about me bunching up the spots afterwards, It was a monumental. I took the fellow back down, and out he went. We were supposed to stay in contact but never heard from him again. Wonder what ever happened to those ET's? They were like new, and yes, I remember he introduced the "Great Pretender", perhaps "Only you" also so I could put a date on it. Most were all well known black groups. The story is true. Happy trails. Chucko the over the hill teenager..... Got more gold in the vault than Mortons' got salt. I started radio when I was 17. Im 76 now.
History!!! @5:15 It was his daughter's sweet 16 birthday, she would've been about 26 when he passed, she would be 84 now. OOPS, "A Million Thanks" had that 'skip'...THAT brings back memories, I can't say I miss having a scratched record!
Fun fact, those WSHS call letters are still used today on a high school radio station based in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. They signed on the air in 1968 and still operate to this day.
Interesting that my Dad grew up in New York City in the 1950's, and I grew up listening to and collecting rock & roll and doowop music from the 50's, yet there isn't one song on this aircheck that I've ever heard of. In fact, I haven't even heard of any of the artists other than the Three Chuckles. But I know them for the song "Runaround", not the song "Foolishly" which is heard here. Seems like the music Alan Freed played at that time has gone on to become fairly obscure and forgotten. Seems that most of them can be found on RUclips though.
He died of liver problems which was caused by years of alcoholism. So he did sorta kill himself as a result of his way of living, but it wasn't actually a suicide. He didn't intentionally end his life.
I listened to him every evening. He was responsible for introducing me to Rock & Roll music. He was a great man.
Thank you for this treasure Mr. Feaster.
You're very welcome

11:21 ... So, apparently, Elvis wasn't the only one makin' 'em scream in the '50s!
He coined the words "rock and roll"
Introduced U.s. to different styles of music.
Payola destroyed Freed!
Freed died on January 20, 1965, from uremia and cirrhosis brought on by alcoholism, at the age of 43
The day the voice of the music died!
A couple of songs - mostly talking.
The good old days with high power vacuum tube transmitters. Good old analog radios. None of this WOKE BS.
True. He committed suicide.
He died of liver problems which was caused by years of alcoholism. So he did sorta kill himself as a result of his way of living, but it wasn't actually a suicide. He didn't intentionally end his life.
