From this point on, the feeling of emptiness from the transient becomes permanent, and Shannon's death only exacerbates it. Shannon is the last person in this dystopian town who was dear to the hero, after his death the only driving motive becomes revenge and the need to secure Irene's life at all costs. In the denouement of the plot lies the true tragedy of the outcome to which the protagonist has come and the initial impossibility of a happy ending as such becomes obvious.
