- In this video I take a look at the picking pattern for the verse chords of John Mayer's "Edge of Desire" from his 2009 album Battle Studies.
After a review I have realized that John plays everything with downstrokes. Ummm good luck with that ;)
Enjoy!

The inocennce of mission tomorow on the runway
Wildflowers and wine by Marcus king would be an awesome breakdown. Intricate guitar parts make the song awesome.
'"joy of being a guitarist"" thanks man
The nails were they painted for a good cause or something super awesome lesson by the way
Just me being super fashionable ;)
Ok just finished playing the first two parts for an hour, can’t wait to learn the rest. Thanks 😂😂😂😂
lol it took me a month but also i have poor concentration and no focus
lol it took me a month but also i have poor concentration and no focus
It took me 3 hrs
Think he plays it all down strokes with his picking hand. Crazy. Great video though, I also learned it alternate picking.
I like to play down stroke it's better
How the hell does he play this and sing at the same time ha ha
That's a bloody good question!
The only possible answer: He is John Mayer😂
youre an absolute stud for this breakdown. thank you
:D
hey man my ensemble at Berklee is covering this song and this really really helped! much love, thank you!!!!
That's awesome! Any chance I could see some video?
Glad this was of some help.
@@AslanJazzLan we recorded this with without video as we it as a garageband project. if you have a preferred email id be happy to send the mp3 over. we did the entire song which was really fun
Very well presented, thanks for sharing my friend, I will work on it. Cheers, Joe
Thanks man , took me a really long time but i can now play it :)
Glad I could help!
Great lesson, helped me a lot more than any other I could find. Not sure if you'll see this comment since this video is older, but I have a question that no one seems to address. How do you go about making your guitar sound that way? (the way Johns sounds in the song). I am sure it has something to do with the amplifier settings for tone -- but it would be helpful if you could talk us through that! Thanks so much for the videos.
+Justin Duffy I'm glad you got.spmethig out of this ^.^
Off the top of my head I wouldn't be able to tell you how John gets his tone but it's something I can look into :)
It's the palm muting man! If you haven't found out yourself yet
on the Run that starts on the B on the low E, do you just move down the the B on the G string (4) instead of hitting the B on the 9th fret of the D string because its comfortable for you, or is there a secret reason im missing for the move?
Oh nah that's just totally a mistake in the tab. I play it on the D string in the video the tab is just wrong! Well spotted ;)
is there any practice rutine to get better at the picking pattern?im struggling with hitting the right strings
Practicing this song is the best practice routine to practice this song.
Lovely prs
I don't agree with any of your personal views but I will say you play the guitar quite well.
Why, thank you ^.^
@@AslanJazzLan why do we not agree with his personal views?
Great lesson,just found this track,it's amazing !
thanks, this will be a great picking exercise
why dont you use play the way john does with the thumb over the A instead, just curious?
Honestly, i made this video before I got in the groove of using my thumb over top. I probably would do that now.
any chance you could do a vid on the chorus part mate? Cheers
I'll take a look-see ^.^
What prs pickups is that ?
Great lesson overall , thanks
You're welcome. Are you asking what brand they are or which one's I'm playing through?
Great toturial, but the tabs does'nt always match up with what you are playing...
Great job dude!
What pedals/effects/amps are you using? Chur🤙🏼
I think, at the time, I was using my Fender Deville. Probably a small amount of reverb. No pedals.
Any tips for playing this on an acoustic guitar? I think the frets are wider apart on my acoustic than they are on your guitar and I'm finding it difficult to reach the frets further apart.
One of the things I usually recommended to people is to practice further up the neck and once you are comfortable with that, start moving down the neck. So, do the pattern up at the 12th fret, once you are comfortable with that, move it down to the 11th then the 10th and so on.
@@AslanJazzLan thank you for the advice! Will try :)
What bpm?
and the chorus?
thank you king!
Nice nails
