  • After shooting with the Tamron 150-600 G2 for a number of months and being very happy with it why have I switched to the Sony 200-600 G? In this video I tell you why and also give my first impressions of the Sony 200-600 G on my Sony A6400. I can't tell you how happy I was with the performance of the Tamron 150-600 G2 so why change?

      Hello Micheal, the camo cover is actually just the old one off my Tamron 150-600 G2 as I found that most of the bits fitted the new lens. I don't really put it on for camouflage but more as a layer of protection. I don't cover all the lens as I like to have easy access to the buttons and switches etc. Can you let me know what settings you mean and I will see what I can do.👍

    Heard such great reports about this lens Scott. It’s a nice middle compromise between the 100-400mm GM and expensive 600mm F4. If I ever get a Sony I’d get this lens for sure for wildlife. Thanks for sharing the video mate 👍🙏

    Really enjoyed this Scott 👌🏻 The rationale and Buzzard 😉 were rock solid mate. I really value personal comfort with gear (perhaps more so than even functionality). It looks to me like the perfect combo & to think you could get the camera and lens for circa. £2k is mind-blowing! As you know, I shoot woodland landscape primarily but I have a camera decision to make myself soon.. I miss the a6000 for macro work but to imagine dropping the 200-600 on an a6400 really encourages me to think on it for ultimate versatility. I've been debating an a7iii / Nikon Z6 but the a6400 is really tempting me back... Thanks for sharing your views, much appreciated 🙏🏻 Look forward to future shoots, Steve

      Thanks Steve, I have been around the houses a bit but to be honest I think with this set up I am at the stage where it does everything I want so why look at an A9? It provides me with a fantastic landscape and wildlife setup so the back up camera is looking like more of the same! As to your decision Steve, listen to everybody, then ignore everybody and go out and get what does the job for you! Then you've made the right decision. Cheers mate👍

    Nice video and thank you. I have the 200-600 and the 6400. As far as a second body, definitely get a full frame. I have an A7III and an A7rIV. I am selling my A7rII to pay for the upgrade. The A7rII is a great camera and the image quality is fantastic just not for BIF. I have not shot the Sony 100-400 so I cannot compare but I have the Sigma 100-400 in FE mount and my A3 and A2 prints are quite impressive. Good luck in your quest and Good LUX.

    I have been using an a6500 for a few years after switching from Nikon. I recently added an A7R III, which is working out for me. I like the full frame, the added megapixels, and the dual cards. It also switches into APS-C mode in an instant. As for the 200-600, I just added one to my lineup and I really love it and I agree with your thoughts and impressions. Thanks for a fine review. It was quite helpful.

    nice review, couple of things that may help , i added a cheap L bracket which solved my little finger issues, there is an after market tripod mount which has the footplate built in. I used a vinyl wrap to cover my lens, it has a nice black carbon look to it (make sure its a 3m sticker) I also wrapped the a6400 with the same gear beats the cloth stuff and doesnt interfere with the controls.I have made my af/mf button to change between wide zone and single point that helps with the focus issues. I also have a7iii which is miles better for low light and i use it so much more than the a6400. Enjoy the lens i love mine.

      Hello Ian, thanks for the information. I have a lot to think about with regard to second camera choice. If I need one urgently it may be an old A6300 as a stop gap but I can certainly see the benefit of a full frame. Generally when I get a second camera I always like it to give me something else that my other camera doesn't so better low light performance would certainly fill that criteria. Thanks for watching👍

    I’d suggest an A7r3 or 4 as a 2nd camera. I recently switched from an A6500 to the A7r4 and use the Sony 100-400GM. Full frame should give you smoother backgrounds at any given aperture and possibly better low light performance due to the bigger sensor. Also the higher pixel count on either the r3 or r4 means you can crop quite aggressively and maintain quality i.e still have a high megapixel file after the crop. Incidentally I use the programmable button on the lens to switch to crop mode in camera which helps me with composition, but you can of course do the same crop in post from the full size file. I’d certainly suggest you try full frame though, maybe an A9, if not one of the R cameras

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  3 года назад

      Hello Ryan, thanks for watching and the suggestions. Normally when I get a second camera I do like it to give me something different to my other camera. Not necessarily better but different. Certainly a full frame would provide that with better low light performance and perhaps a better option for landscapes etc. You've certainly given me a lot to think about! Cheers Scott👍

  • @paulmcwilliams8641
    @paulmcwilliams8641 3 года назад +1

    I use the lens with an A7ii and made my own camouflage cover. I like to have a handle for my left hand rather than holding on to the lens, so I can really pull the setup into my body for hand held shots. Therefore I bought an independent foot to screw the grip into, as the one Sony supplies does allow the grip to be positioned, so I can still adjust the focus or zoom with my thumb. The grip can also be used as a mini tripod with a monopod foot screwed in and I use it to hold the equipment against a tree or fence post if one is available. One more benefit is I have an adjustable strap through my trousers belt, which I can slip the handle into which then shares the weight with my shoulder strap along with restraining the lens by my side when I am walking about. If you want to look at the grip attached there is a photograph on the Sony UK site in a review by Tuttivilleus 17/1/21
    I am considering a 6000x camera for the longer reach, but I am concerned about how well it will work with hand held shots. I will never use it for video, just stills.

    I agree with your opinion completely. When I switched from my Kodak bridge camera to the D90 didn´t like I couldn´t make videos through the viewfinder. And now I really wish my D500 was quieter or silent. It distubrs animals and even me the so loud shutter it has. But I prefer to look through a pentaprism. You know, we are all the time watching digital screens, monitor, smartphone... adding another one so close to the eye... don´t like the idea. Can´t arrive to understand why they make those lenses white color being a wildlife photographer potential use. Yes, they are beautyful and nice to make videos like this. It hurts my eyes against the outdoors. They should make a black option.

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  2 года назад

      It really is a swings and roundabouts thing with how camera's function. I really like the silent shutter (once you get used to it!) I find it really useful for mammals but i often switch back to normal shutter for birds who don't react to the noise as much just because i like the sound of the shutter. As always branding pays a big part in lens colour I think Sony probably do it to show a premium product as Canon have done with there ranges. I don't find the white two bad to be honest, I'm more likely to scare the wildlife before they react to the lens.😂

    I purchased this lens after shooting with the Sigma 150-600 EF mount and Sigma MC-11 adapter for Sony (the last Canon mount lens I hung onto after switching from Canon to Sony). Image quality is much better than the Sigma and well worth the expense. I'm currently using it on the A7R4 and am will soon be using it on the A1.

      I don't know about the Sigma but I was impressed with my Tamron 150-600 G2 but I agree this lens is a step up. An expensive lens but in comparison to Sonys other options a bargain. For me it would be perfect if it had a zoom lock and was F5.6 to 400mm but you can't have everything👍

    I am not a sony user but a sony lens of that focal length for that price is a great price for sure, can totally understand you switching in that case. Darren Knight had the 100-400 and the 200-600 and kept the 600 so I am guessing he was happy enough to ditch the higher priced 100-400 too. Good luck going forward with it. I have recently up graded to the 200-600mm from the 70-350mm with my a6400. Best thing I've ever done. I find that the pixel density means I can even crop quite a bit at low ISO. Not tried video yet. I am thinking of getting an Olympus dot sight once I decide which type of support to go for.

A full review will be coming, not sure what you are like over there but we are in full lockdown (again) so makes it difficult. The attachment around the camera is an L bracket. The one I use allows me to mount the microphone on the side when the screen is flipped but also allows you to turn the camera to portrait mode without dropping a ball head to the side. Hi Scott, I've watched a few of your videos so far and it seems like you change gear quite often, it so happens I am going through an upgrading plan as well and would love to get your opinion on it. I, too will be coming off a Canon DSLR, while you came off the 80D, I will be coming off the 90D. I love shooting BIF especially raptors and am trying to improve on it. As such, I think is really time to finally to migrate from DSLR to mirrorless and enjoy the benefits of animal eye AF and tracking. I have been going back and forth on it a bit, but have come up with 2 options:
    1) Go with the Canon R5 and just adapt my Sigma 150-600mm (because I simply refuse to buy the RF 100-500mm which is an external zoom that comes with the innate issues of having a stiffer and longer throw which is not ideal for BIF. Plus in my opinion, it is massively overpriced, I just don't understand how can it be double the price of the Sony FE 200-600mm?!)
    2) Or go with the Sony A6600 paired up with the FE 200-600mm as a bridge setup. I have looked at the A1 and am not convinced it is worth US$6.5K, but the A7R IV is also beginning to date at the same time. Initially, I was going to wait for the A7R V, but it seems like all cameras disregard of brand will be delayed this year due to supply chain issues in Japan, not to mention the global shortage of chips. Plus, Sony just announced on the A7R IVa update model which means it will still be a long while before we get the A7R V.
    The way I look at it is the A7R V could be at least a year away if not more. May be go with the R5 which is top notch and all of a sudden looking like a complete bargain after the launch of the A1, but just bear with the Sigma for now. May be revisit Sony when the time comes such as when they announce the A7R V or even the A9 III if the specs are attractive. Or I get into the Sony ecosystem right away, just start with the A6600 first while enjoying the FE 200-600mm and reserve the pot for the main body (if the specs are right) later down the road. What do you think?

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  3 года назад

      Hi, thanks for watching. This is always going to be a personal decision. For a start I think that the Canon 90d was a pretty big step up from the 80d so camera body wise you may not see as big a benefit. If it was me I would switch to the Sony (i did!) People always mention the handling of a small mirrorless body with a big lens but it really is like anything, you just get used to it and muscle memory takes over. Yes it may feel odd to start with but that feeling soon goes. I would also say that although third party lenses are closing the gap on using a native lens they aren't there yet and a Sony body and lens combination is always going to work better. Add to that the fact that in my opinion the A6600 will do 85% of what the A9 and A1 will do and most of that 15% is more of an "i want that feature" rather than "I need that feature" and for me its a no-brainer. All the best!👍

      An adapted 3rd party lense is also not ideal for birds in flight!

    • @Rascallucci
      @Rascallucci 2 года назад

      @@markrigg6623 No, is not. In the end, I still went with the R5 and to date I am still adapting the Sigma 150-600mm. I just couldn't resist it when the R5 dropped to US$3.5K over here in Hong Kong. But, I am left with the same issue with the lens. There are communication issues between the R5 and the Sigma as it was never designed for the RF mount. Having said that, I still rather do that than to buy the RF 100-500mm. Is just a matter of principle for me, I am not going to pay more than double for something that I don't want. So, I was ready to trade in my Canon gear and migrate over to Sony and go with the A1 and the FE 200-600mm until someone said there is a rumour there will be an A1a with an updated high res LCD screen. I figure if I am going to pay that much for a Sony flagship body, there is no way I am going to be using a 1 million dot screen like my 90D. I am so used to the R5's screen now and is miles better than the 90D. Well, this is where I am at, if and when the A1a does come out, I will move to Sony. I thought about it long and hard, even when the R1 comes out, I will still have the same issue with the zoom. I just don't want an external zoom and one with a shorter focal length on top. Canon will never make another internal zoom again, they have gone for this stubby trendy design language for the RF series. Sure, they look good when is retracted, but in practice you can't really zoom in the act of shooting, an external zoom will knock you out of shooting position. On the other hand, Sony at least tries to offer some internal zooms, the FE 200-600mm for one and the new the FE 70-200mm as well. Plus, they have 3rd party lens support from both Sigma and Tamron.

    Have you considered the A7RIV, it is full-frame and can switch to a APSC crop factor of 1.5 it's an awesome camera. I would like an opinion with this combination using the Sony 200-600mm lens.

      Hi, I have had a few people comment on my previous videos about that combination. I think the conclusion was it's a fantastic combination but the autofocus performance lags behind the A9 slightly. Thanks for watching👍

      Hi Scott, just to say I now have the Alpha 7RIV & the 200-600mm G lens and the combination is awesome. fast focus, sharp images. the only issue with the Sony A7RIV is the Noise! You need to watch your shutter speed and ISO otherwise really impressive.

    The problem I find with assigning functions to the lens button is you will accidentally keep hitting it, especially when using a neoprene cover.

      So far it's not bothered me and I suspect what I will do if I find a neoprene cover interferes with it is leave that section off. That will also lift my hand slightly further away from the buttons and any accidental operation, but only time will tell👍

    A Sony A6000/6100 or another I guess will be a good back-up camera or your can use the Sony A6400 as a back-up camera and go all the way to Sony A7RIV which I have becuse I love landscape photography, but when I do macro and wildlife photography with the Sony 200-600mm I often use it in APSC mode with 26 megapixels, I also have the SonyA7RIII but I never use it any more, it collects dust on shelf, later this year there will come a Sony A7RV and then prices will drop on the A7RIV ! I love the 5.6 megapixel EVF in the A7RIV, when you have tried such a good EVF you cannot go back ! Maybe a Sony A6600 as a main camera and the A6400 as a back-up or you can wait and see which new Sony cameras comes this year.

      There's a lot of choice out there. I'm not sure which way I will go yet. It may be that I get another APC in the short term and get a full frame at a later date. I did have the Sony A7ii but it wasn't the best for wildlife. At least I don't have to make the decision yet so when Sony bring out some more cameras it will probably muddy the waters further!😂 Thanks for watching👍
