Hey everyone! Psychologist here. This video showed up on my feed. I'd say it like this: You can really harm someone if you're not properly trained. I have a doctorate and there are some things I choose not to treat because I'm not competent in that area. You learn so much with a PhD or PsyD, but even with those degrees, you've only scratched the surface of mental health. Undergrad professors and career counselors need to be more transparent with students. Lastly, being a psychologist is absolutely amazing. It's a long road to become a psychologist, but totally worth it!

To become a psychologist you’ll need an undergraduate degree and a doctorate. Which means you’ll have to go to graduate school to get your PhD or your psyD. Both PhD and psyD is well respected. PhD focus more on research so if you want to be a professor and teach others on a specific field in psychology or you like researching and want to do more on a certain area etc… then a PhD is right for you. If you want to do more clinical work like being a therapist, school counselor or clinical psychologist etc… you should just get your psyD plus your psyD takes less time than your PhD but it really depends on what you want to do. Both are great and will be difficult to get.

Unless you're getting an undergrad degree in engineering or a STEM field, your criticism applies to every major not just psychology. Liberal arts degrees aren't trade school or job training. A degree in liberal arts proves you can learn new ideas, write about them intelligently, and research problems independently and communicate your results. Those skills apply to nearly every professional job. My undergrad degree was in psychology and philosophy and I was able to get a job in software implementation without any additional school. Most of my colleagues were in the same boat. If you enjoy psychology, I highly encourage you to stick with it knowing that it prepares you for nearly any career out there.

Turn to bible and allow CHRIST to be your therapist, psychologist and psychiatrist. No man nor women fits to be one. All are sinners and without glory, all are tempted and suffer the same.
All are expected to REPENT AND BORN AGAIN, to LIVE HOLY AND GO AND SIN NO MORE.
All are weak in the daily fight between their spirit and flesh.
All these therapist, psychologist and psychiatrist, this world provides, can do is:
      to deceive and steal.
They deceived you through all these “diagnoses” and they steal your money, through all the pills which you “need”.
In short: they poison your mind and your overall health, leaving you with neither one.
Therapist, Psychologist and Psychiatrist = Field where no human soul, never ever going to fit of being an help, no matter the among of years spend in “medical schools” or the decree gotten from there.
ALL of us are daily deceived, no matter the walks of life.

This is a great video for people considering psychology! It’s always a good idea to have a plan B as well. I am currently doing my MA in psychology. I want to apply to PhD programs in clinical psychology but I already know I most likely won’t get in. So my backup is to be a faculty member at community college and/or an RA after my MA🙂 I am going to be a graduate instructor in the Fall for an undergrad psychology class and will be doing a research internship to help build my CV for a PhD or future job.
If you really want to do psychology as a major you should go for it, just know to set realistic expectations, have backup plans, and gain relevant experience! I wish the best for everyone on their journey!

Hey! I just wanted to offer up advice as well. I love the content in this video and agree with everything Julia said. Because you are in high school and this is your dream, I would start early and look at what makes a competitive PhD applicant. If there is one thing I wish I had done sooner as a psych grad and current PhD applicant, it would be that. Research experience is going to be the biggest thing when it comes to PhD. Throughout your undergrad career, actively seek opportunities to work as a research assistant for a psych professor (and try to work in various labs to gain as much experience as possible). Also seek teaching assistant opportunities because this will show you are passionate about psychology. Lastly, maintain relationships with your psych professors (esp those you research with) because they will be your letters of recommendations. Clinical experiences are harder to come by, but if you find opportunities to shadow, intern, or work as a psych/clinical assistant either in private practice or at an institution, that’ll def give you the upper hand. Again, you are still in high school, so don’t be discouraged…you have a lot of time to feel out the profession and learn about the amazing care opportunities afterwards. Psychology is applicable to a lot of fields like school, business, marketing, advertising, game development, etc. People who understand people make great employees. Don’t limit yourself or spread yourself thin. When it comes time to apply for grad school, it will be stressful, but there is always a program for you…regardless of how competitive it is. If you really want a PhD, you will obtain that PhD, even if the timing wasn’t according to a predetermined plan. I think it’s amazing that as a high school student you are already thinking about post undergrad life and career. This shows maturity, and, even though I don’t know you, I know that you will be successful on your personal and professional endeavors. I wish you the best of luck (though you probably won’t be needing it) ☺️

It feels almost surreal to see your comment because I was exactly your age when I discovered my passion for psychology as well. I became enthralled by it. it was then that I knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I still feel the same 10 years later.
Not many people are blessed with finding their calling. So if you feel it in your heart, don’t ever let go of that feeling.
I am now a senior in my undergrad who just got offered an extremely competitive psych fellowship for the summer and it’s crazy how the time passes, and how I’m already applying to masters programs in clinical psych and counseling (and preparing to pay off my loans 😅). But this is all to say that if you LOVE psychology with all of your heart, don’t hold back! Yes, graduate programs are competitive, but you fight for what you love and nothing good ever came easy. If your passion runs true, you’ll do absolutely anything to have it in your life, the determination comes easy.
Yea, it’s not an easy profession (most aren’t), but that’s apart of what makes the goal so rewarding! So in the meantime during school I encourage you to continue to research and engage your passion for neuropsychology! It will def pay off when you remember the terms in your gen psych classes ;)

I’ve been through a lot. I helped lots of friends with dealing with their mental state (depression, abusive fathers, etc) and I always enjoyed helping others. Many people I’ve became friends with, told me that only after one day of talking to eachother, they felt that I was giving good vibes.I was always told that I give a “safe to talk to” feeling and it almost feels like having some sort of aura of “safe and trust”. I loved Psychology in highschool and I just feel like it’s the right thing to do for me because not only I’ve helped many friends and people going through suicidial thoughts and crises but I also feel so good after I know that I made a big change in a person’s life. I feel like psychology goes hand in hand with my desires. Like it’s not just a subject I fell in love with in highschool, it’s not the salary. I feel like it’s part of me, of who I am and what I truly enjoy to do. I walk in crutches because I have leg problem, it’s a long story. But to sum it up, I might be using those for all my life. I always was told by my parents or other strangers to get a degree in IT just because I walk in crutches and I need to sit most of the time. That and the fact that Im able to fix basic stuff on pc (stuff that can be fixed by anyone with a search on google in the most “severe” cases) and installing windows which nowadays is as easy as powering up your pc. They always tried to scare me off with “Psychology is hard, you have to read lots of books, you may become crazy and really stressed out with your cases” but I always told them that if u truly are passionate about a career, it’s not hard. Recently I’ve felt lost and confused, I checked an IT career path (Software Testing) and saw lots of videos about it, participing in a webinar about what’s like to become a software tester. My heart it’s still at psychology and I simply cannot ditch it and switch to an IT career. Im not scared of competition, I just feel deep inside that this is what I need to do . Nothing is impossible in this world anyways. So people, do not be discouraged. If you are passionate about it like I am, just go for it without looking back and that applies to all majors, not only Psychology.

Hey Julia. Great video, all true and I'm a Psych major specifically BA from South Africa, I had no idea the struggle is the same, haha. Anyway, I just want to say, Your Psych Bachelor's can land you a great spot for teaching English abroad. I remember applying playfully on job sites and in just 1 day I had all these emails from Asia recognizing me simply because I majored in Psychology. They didn't even care about my lack of experience in formal teaching and they were right, I am great with kids and people in general and I credit that to my Degree. I also got a small gig writing on social issues for this other blog, I only wrote one article I prefer writing blog-style so I declined further requests but even those guys specifically picked me because they recognized the Degree I have and understood that a BA gives you a better outlook and understanding of life and the social issues for lack of a better word. Anyway I hope things work out for everyone.

I will become an adjunct professor at some community colleges once I earn my masters to get experience, then work towards tenure track positions at universities. the words and acronyms can feel intimidating, but if you really want to make a difference in people’s lives, it’s so important to be willing to put in the work. in most cases you’re taking part in the trajectory of adults and children’s lives. it’s a serious commitment and responsibility. academic psychological education isn’t for everyone, and there’s a reason the degrees take 4+ years. if you’re passionate about it enough, this sacrifice will be worth your while. if you’re just doing it for the check or title, maybe find a different major/discipline.
i’m sure Julia doesn’t want you to second guess your choice, but the purpose of the video (from my perspective) is to encourage you to think about how seriously you’re taking your career in psychology. sort out what’s best for you. your experience with education is always unique.

There is an intermediary step. After a psychology undergraduate degree, an individual can get a Masters degree in mental health counseling. This would enable the person to become a licensed mental health counselor or clinical counselor in their state. Consequently, they can do therapy, bill insurance companies, and do everything a psychologist would do if the psychologists were restricting his or her practice to therapy. Another option is a Masters in clinical social worker which also gives you the right to do therapy once you are licensed. If you get a PhD in psychology you can do services beyond therapy (e.g. psychological testing). So just a little more schooling beyond the four-year college degree allow someone to use what they learned in psychology and do psychotherapy with clients.

I regret myself for selecting in psychology , and I am not trying to discourage anyone who wants to do psychology but , i want you to know that you can still study psychology in some other courses at universities and I wished I knew that before ..the lectures in my university weren't the most interesting , and there are alot of reading and coursework. But if you want to study psychology and become a psychologist then maybe getting a major in psychology is appropriate? Literally, you can Google your university and find all the science courses they have , have a look and maybe even have a look at all their modules for all the science courses they offer, I promise you , you will find something that you like that INCLUDE psychology element . You will do great things there.

I’m undeclared at the moment but I’ve already registered for the prerequisite classes for the psychology major this Fall Quarter. Fresh out of high school and community college, I made the decision to pursue this major cause I thought my PSYCH 100 class was pretty cool.
I was so excited about it. But then, a few days later (today), it came to my attention that a Bachelors in Psychology is pretty useless for many people, and I’m just a little paranoid that it might apply to me as well. 😔
But the thing is-I’m not necessarily expecting to get a job that’s directly psychology related by doing this like everyone else who is regretting the degree. I just enjoy the subject so much and believe that if I combine it with another field of expertise, I could land an amazing job in a slightly different field like some of the success stories I’ve read.
My instincts tell me that I’m only halfway done selecting my major and that I should keep psychology as a complimentary major to something else.

If you're interested in being a therapist there are lots of options that don't involve a PhD! You can go to graduate school and do a master's in social work or master's in counseling and then become a licensed counselor or licensed clinical social worker (both of which enable you to work in a therapist role) after you graduate. Coming from a BA in psychology graduate, social work is a great field to get into and it definitely still utilizes a lot of theories from psychology but also teaches you how to view individuals through more of a strengths based approach. PhDs are only really necessary if you are interested in doing research, but are not so much necessary for a clinical role working one-on-one with individuals.

@@najmakashem4203 So I did my bachelor's in psychology and am currently doing my master's in social work! When I was doing my undergrad I was very confused about the different routes and didn't really think of social work as an option. I'm doing my master's in it because an MSW is very versatile in terms of careers, and I also align myself a lot more with the values of social work. However, I don't regret doing my BA in psychology because it gave me a great foundation to build off of in terms of mental health. My social work program doesn't focus a whole lot of the psychology side of things so it's helpful to already know that information. I would recommend doing it this way as opposed to a bachelor's in social work and a master's in psychology, because as an MSW graduate you can get licensed (LMSW or LSW depending on the state) and then after 2 years of clinical work you can become a licensed clinical social worker and work as a therapist. I'm not super familiar with a master's in psychology but I don't believe that there are many options for licensure at that level (assuming that you are in the US). This is all just my opinion though!

    • @user-tl4tp3gq6w
      @user-tl4tp3gq6w 2 года назад +2

@@najmakashem4203 I'm so glad that this was helpful! From a financial standpoint, getting both a bachelor's and master's in social work makes more sense because having that bachelor's degree significantly shortens the length of your master's program. Most schools offer an advanced master's program (which takes about 1 year) for students who have their bachelor's in social work, and then a foundation program (mine is about 2 and a half years) for students who did their bachelor's degree in a different field.
Also, after you get a bachelor's in social work you are able to get licensed at that level, so you could hypothetically work in the field while also doing your master's degree. As a licensed BSW you could do a variety of jobs such as working as a case-manager for various populations, which may help you decide whether you for sure want to continue with your master's. I have found that with a bachelor's in psychology it is a little harder to find jobs that are relevant to the degree, although I was able to work at a job for a few years in between my programs that was social work oriented.
But that being said I don't regret my bachelor's in psychology and I feel like I was able to go into the social work field with a different perspective which has been useful. I think that both paths are great and you can't really go wrong either way.

I am in my 4th year of my Bachelor's and wanted to put this here because I had a lot of the same misconceptions about possible career paths after college and what was required to practice. In my 2nd year, I started looking into this because I wasn't sure if I wanted to pursue a doctorate after college.. You can become a licensed therapist with a Master's degree. A PhD will get you the "psychologist" title, but you can become an LCSW, LMFT, LPC with a Master's degree. I think a lot of us aren't aware of this when picking this major so I hope this helps anyone with these same questions. It's always helpful to look up the specific requirements for your state, though!

The most honest video! I absolutely loved it! I am a nurse and I work as a mental health nurse. I was thinking of converting my nursing degree to psychology (master's) but I wanted to learn more about it and whether or not it is a good idea. I kind of already knew that you need to get PhD to work to your full capacity but at the same time I wasn't too sure how likely I was going to be able to get a PhD especially while working full time. This video made me think deeper as it would especially be a much longer journey for me to first convert my degree and then do a whole bunch of stuff to get licensed. On top of that I am really worried about the competition. It might just be way easier for me to do a master's in mental health nursing (psych nurse practitioner).

As a third year psych student myself, I appreciate this video because so many people I know think they can become therapists/psychologists etc with just a BA… but that’s not the case. A BA (at least in Canada) doesn’t give u many job opportunities but it DOES open doors for Masters and Doctorates. I knew walking in to be a therapist meant 6+ years of schooling. My 1st year teachers made it known that the BA is a doorway… and to not be naive and think a BA is a “pass” to 6 digit paying jobs. 😂😂
To put it into perspective… a BA is only 4 years. Some people do it in 3 years with overloading schedules and summer school. Do u really think… in 3 years you will archive alllllllll the things you need to be a psychologist/therapist?! Do u want your therapist to only have 3 years of background education?? Absolutely not. U need training, or you will cause harm. To be a doctor you need like 8+ years of schooling not including residency. Education is necessary, and the years may sound daunting but is also extremely rewarding. The more education… the better your opportunities and higher pay checks.
Edit: This isn’t meant to scare people away from a BA… I’ve found that in 3 years alone I have grown physically, intellectually, emotionally, and mentally. I highly recommend it, as the later on jobs are not only rewarding but often save people’s lives. It’s all about the delay of gratification baby!! (Something you will learn in psych 101)

Clinical psychologist here. I think that when you’re working with people, and especially considering that we work with people’s innermost feelings and experiences, it’s more than necessary for you to be especially trained for this type of thing. If not it’s seriously risky for the patients to be with someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing.

I feel like if you really are passionate about your major, like psych... then obtaining a pHd or any other liscensed doctorate degree, then that's just one of the sacrifices you have to do and make in your education. Although it's a long road ahead, you just need to have that mindset of commitment. And on the note of not realizing, that's what people mean by doing your research before you decide and apply to the program.

If you just like learning cool stuff well there are many books you can buy that can teach you that.

You could always go for a master's to become a therapist, such as an LMFT, LCSW, MSW. As for a doctorate. If you want to become a licensed psychologist doing more clinical work, you can always go for a Psy.D instead of a Ph.D.

  • @julialunsford7071

As a psych major myself, I wanted to give my two cents on the jobs you can get with all three degrees. Yes, there is a caveat with psych in that if you want to pursue a job as a LICENSED psychologist you do have to go for the full PhD or PsyD.
BUT that is not to say that you are limited in your options if you want to pursue just a bachelors or Masters.
With a bachelors, you CAN work in some social work positions, positions held through the government such as foster care, mental institutions, adoption agencies, etc. The biggest con is that the pay is lacking, generally speaking.
With a masters degree in clinical psych or counseling, you can do LOADS more! You CAN have a private therapy practice, licensed mental health counseling, specialized counseling, higher paying social worker positions, and your pay is better than that of BA degree. This opens up your options exponentially and you can be able to work in your specialty, with the choice of being a licensed or unlicensed professional.
With a PhD/PsyD, you can do just about everything, including the official psychologist licensure. You can start your own psychology practice, join a psych firm, and offer your own individual hourly rates. You get THE most training, with over 2,000 hours of required training hours - making you the most qualified for in-depth therapy techniques and practices. In terms of research, you can join research institutes and facilitate your own research funded by APA. Having a PhD/PsyD is the highest paying profession out of the three. It’s biggest caveat is the student loan debt that you will have to manage and account for.
So, it’s kinda a matter of weighing the pros and cons for YOU and your career path. No two degrees are ‘the best’ in of itself. If you’re interested in graduate school for psych, be sure to do your research! But know that you are not limited in your career options regardless of what you choose.

Psychology gives you the tools to be very competent in things as critical thinking at the moments of exams for Grad school. If you don’t want to go to Grad school majoring psychology is a bad idea but if you are thinking to go into grad school psychology will give you so many tools for grad school.

Just to add another point as a current senior undergrad psych student: A lot of jobs are definitely unavailable unless you 1st get a PhD and an actual therapist license. No matter what, it’s gonna be a lot of work, but a lot of grad programs will pay for your tuition for being a Teachers Assistant or Research Assistant. However, a lot of this stuff is VERY unknown to 1st or 2nd years and I genuinely had no idea what my post-undergrad career path was going to be (still trying to figure it out rn) and I didn’t really understand what grad school for psych was like until I took clinical psychology my 3rd semester (recommend taking this class if your college offers it)

If you're a senior undergrad psych student, you should know that you can get a therapist, counselor, or social work license with a Master's degree. A PhD or PsyD gets you a psychologist license. Most jobs in the field are available at the Master's level. The doctorate level is for if you want to do more advanced testing/assessment or do research.

A PhD in psychology is not the only route to those career paths. You can become a therapist with just a master's degree. A PhD is academic (PsyD is for practice) and often not worth it unless you want to commit your life to research and a lot of debt.
Yes, you need a graduate degree to work in the field (and make decent money), but a PhD is usually unnecessary.

What about nepotism in upper class white collar professional career paths? Does someone from a background in poverty have a snowballs chance in hell at becoming a psychologist without connections, let alone to get into grad school without legacy admissions? Then the cons of being a man wanting to get into a soft science profession... I was deterred by a guidance counselor from a local university to take the requisites in psych to apply to grad school. Around 75 percent of psychologists are women. There is a massive shortage of psychologists for men, yet men are deterred and in many cases downright turned away from grad school, since you guessed it, very liberal women are a majority of admissions officers. And let's be honest, there is such a thing as misandry.
The irony is middle and upper middle class students go to college to learn about mental health in a textbook without having every experienced firsthand what it means to be poor, which hugely influences mental health. Then the poor kids who want to get into the mental health profession who have firsthand experience in adversity, can't get in.
Did it occur to people who deal with others every day in a clinical setting, that they're dealing mostly with people who are very far removed from their day to day survival. When the people who really need help are poor people who are in daily survival mode. Every day.
