Komodo is a national park covering an archipelago of islands in Indonesia. Completely uninhabited, you can only access it via boat, but trips are easy to arrange from nearby Labuan Bajo.
Labuan Bajo is well-connected by air to the rest of Indonesia, so it’s become one of the tourist hotspots of the country. There’s not much to see in the town, as everyone comes to stay for just two nights to allow for their trip to the islands. Setting out early, it takes about an hour to arrive in the national park. Each boat has a capacity of about twenty, so you definitely start to make friends with the people on your boat. On our tour there were people from around the world... including a young couple from Manchester. You travel thousands of miles to escape the rainy city, but Mancunians always seem to crop up somewhere. Typical.
The first stop is Padar, an island known for its remarkable shape, stunning beaches and remarkable views. A short hike takes you up the mountain and you’re presented with one of the most breathtaking vistas you’ll ever see in your life. We were blown away. There are views and then there are VIEWS. This is definitely the latter.
Although this is located inside the Komodo National Park, you’ll not find any of the famed komodo dragons here. Alas not as they’ve been extinct from this island since 2004. But we’ll be heading to where they do still live later!
The pink sand is formed coral, with the entire beach made from tiny little shards of it. There are also big chunks of it on the beach too. What we didn’t realise was that there are strict rules forbidding you from taking coral away. We thought we were being very smart, taking several large chunks that we intended to take back in our suitcase, but then we were spotted by the tourguide, who threw them straight into the sea.
Komodo Island is, of course, the centrepiece of the tour. And it doesn’t take us long to find the famed komodo dragons. The largest lizards in the world, they can grow up to three metres in length and - as we can attest - they’re pretty damn huge. They’re also carnivores. And cannibals. They eat each other. It’s difficult for baby komodos to make it past infancy because their biggest threat comes from their mothers, who are likely to eat them. They’ll eat people too, given half a chance. Which we weren’t told until after we had been posing for photos with one.
The later spots of the tour are all perfect places to go snorkelling. With stunning azure water that’s crystal clear, it’s the perfect place to see manta rays, which are endemic to the archipelago.
Our trip to Komodo was excellent. It’s a long day, but totally worth it. And as you sail back to Labuan Bajo just in time for sunset, you’ll have made some pretty amazing memories of this stunning corner of Indonesia.

Did the £80 include entrance to the National Park? We are visiting in April and wondering whether to do a liveaboard or day trip.

Hi! No it didn’t include the entrance fees, that was extra. We used DTour Komodo which we highly recommend!
