Temp is not the problem, too much fertilizer run off in the water.

It takes both to get the bacteria to grow, that's why we don't have the problem in the fall, winter or spring.

During our hot summers, when the water level drops in the rivers, much of the bedrock is exposed for families to walk on to get down to the water to swim. I have often seen families having a great time swimming. But, often I have observed the youngest children being placed in the much warmer little pools of water in the rocks back from the edge of the river. These riverine potholes often have different temperatures and evaporating concentrations in water they contain. These pools are attractive to 'babysit' young children while the rest of the family is swimming in swifter or colder water. The warm pools can frequently host conditions for cyanobacterias blooms of various species, increasing the risks far beyond those found in the moving waters of the river. Many times this can be non-toxic, but you can't tell, so it is best to pay close attention to the appearance of that water before allowing a child to be in that warm water, thought to be safer than them being in the river water the adults are in. Often, I find cigarette butts, and lead fishing sinkers in the bottom of these little pools as well, so best to have great caution about water in these pothole pools. And, these are frequently where the dogs go to grab a quick drink as well.

This is a case of every coin having two sides. The blue-green bacteria is important to our health. With increasing temperatures and farm runoff, we are seeing the mega blooms, which means to stay out of the water when you see green alge on the surface of lakes, ponds, creeks or rivers. 😉👍💙🇺🇲🕊 Stay safe!

All this talk just to say that the river is polluted.

Its ironic that once past the last down that dumps "treated sewage " in the river or creek the blooms vanish! Every year it gets worse, 5 years ago my kids could swim on y riverfront until late August, now I see algae in JUNE! Oregon wont let you dredge for gold but its A OK for municipalities to dump sewage daily!

Someone should invent a type of lens that people can purchase that identifies Cyanobacteria.
