Yes this is idealistic, every TED talk I've watched has been. This man is imagining a (very) general path to a desirable future. Like the US and most every other country we say we have to increase the participants in STEM fields. This man is saying that if you want a strong country you cannot concentrate on STEM fields too much. The many other fields that have value. If Africa, or any other country worked on developing a culture that valued knowledge, it would allow Africa (or any country) to flourish in every way.
I'm now completely convinced that most people, who watch TED, do not have any idea about history and past civilizations. Do some research and stop being so ignorant.
I was with him until he got to slavery. Many of the Africans sold as slaves were already slaves to the African continent before traders ever showed up. To pretend like Africans were not selling slaves to traders as "beasts of burden" is a constant lie that needs to be called out. Slavery was (and is still) a horrible institution, but it's not solely a western phenomenon.
Let us not forget that all nations have been slaves at some time and that it was the Britain that was the first to ban its practice and at the time was the only nation trying to enforce this by force of its Navy. Also there are even now countries in Africa nd the middle east who still trade in slaves.
Great talk but i must ask... How do we change this? How do we bring this education and knowlege? Where do we start (i dont mean geographically)? What is the solution or solutions?
Lizzbitt I believe Africans need to look back and question their philosophies, and uncover whatever they can about the past and heritage that was discouraged during colonial rule. I believe Africans can move forward then after we have defined our legacy and who our ancestors were and what they believed in.
Dr. Taiwo's eloquent and candid recounting of the rape of knowledge from Africa, during the slave trade, brought me to tears. Peace and health, everyone.
The "knowledge" centers of Africa in antiquity were only in Egypt and above the Saharan Desert. The early muslim people loved knowledge and compiled many Greek and Roman works, and expanded on them.
TW0T0NGUE Mali and Nigeria are Saharan or below the desert. Either way that really doesnt matter. Should Europeans not celebrate European intellectual achievements despite the Moors practically building the whole iberian peninsula???
You Can't Handle The Truth middle eastern isnt an ethnicity. The moors comprised africans and arabs. North Africa has had black people since forever since we originated on the continent. Mind you the oldest mummy is a black child. Not to mention that those practices are only done today by the indigenous blacks of north africa not the European and Arabs that came later. You have no facts so please leave this conversation. Im nor dealing with you white supremacist revisionists today,
You Can't Handle The Truth Middle eastern moved to North Africa long time ago when they were ruled by the middle eastern people back in the early days of the Middle Ages. When Spain and Portugal was also ruled by middle easterners.
The African person needs not knowledge. He is the embodiment of knowledge. He needs only become conscious of himself once again and live accordingly without external influences. It all becomes clear when the African person becomes one with himself. It will all just begin to overflow, that which pertains to this natural world, from within himself and around him from a solid moral structure that has become foreign to him, having lost connection with himself to embracing a strange beast. That is what will set it up on a higher pedestal worth looking towards by foreigners; that is what will mobilise advancement of the whole. Imagine what could be done with accumulated knowledge from a perspective of having no sight and a collective mentality - a unified body of dedicated, humanistic individuals working for the cause of their country, their continent, their people, their land. I bet everyone should be recognising that it is not knowledge that is achieving most of the ideals of the western world, but fundamentally it is their values, their common interest in working together unto a honourable nation - that is what is driving success, even though their success means destruction in most cases, even of the whole world. The current condition of African people calls for solutions to rather deeper issues before the generation of knowledge, should that knowledge be even authentic. The African society is dead to itself and needs urgent reawakening if it is to achieve any remarkable change that will positively impact itself and beyond.

This guy is completely right of course and he's doing a good thing in discussing the issue. Hopefully this will raise awareness and highlight the need for action but that's really all he is doing; mentioning the need for change; stating that something needs to happen but not really laying out any plan or suggestion for how it should happen, not really taking any action to further the change that is needed. Which is totally fine! I am not trying to criticise, just pointing out an observation. What I'd really like to do is look into it and think about how we actually would put this into action. I love writing and have a site www.everydaydrivel.com which is basically a blog, where I write about things that interest me. I haven't updated in a long time, but in the last few days I have really had the urge to start updating it again, so I've been looking for inspiration. This video is certainly inspiring so I'd like to write an article to post on my site (and any other relevant sites) setting out an actual plan for turning Africa back into a hub of knowledge. If anyone would like to assist/contribute - with regards to either the research or the actual writing of the article I would really love it! Just contact me and let me know!
Since most of you have the Eurocentric view ( Africa is dark, has no history, etc) about Africa, here I am to clarify some things. Africa was once ruled by great empires (Ghana, Mali and Songhai) it was by these empires that the Europeans benefited because unlike the them, the Africans did not care about the meaning of gold ivory etc. It was by these empires that Europeans gained wealth and some form of knowledge. These empires were very diverse in culture and especially knowledge. Keep in mind that not only blacks lived in Africa. The Mali empire being the richest, had Timbuktu. Also known as "The Great Centre of Learning." In addition, it was vast in having countless Islamic universities and libraries. So this means that people were educated, thus think twice before saying that Africa has never had any form of education. (Note: knowing the history about places can assist in you not sounding like completely dumb morons.)
Africa does need to do this. As well as the middle east. The more scientifically ignorant and religious a population is, the less well they're going to perform on a global stage.
I swear to god this negativity could be fixed if they didn't include the "Again" in the title. Why hamstring an important conversation about educating Africa with such a small lie for no reason?
The fact that you focus on that instead of me agreeing with the fact that Africa's education is what we should be focusing on says a lot about you. I was only pointing out why people dislike this video. Whether it is true or not that Africa was the center of knowledge, most people don't think it was which muddies the conversation about the continents future.
Danielinho For starters, check out the Mali Empire c.1230 - 1670 There's also this video talking about the Ford Foundation trying to restore some 700,000 manuscripts found in Timbuktu: ruclips.net/video/_4pJTaiev8k/видео.html
Danielinho umm the oldest university are in west Africa, the aristocratic families of Europe would send their children to the universities of Timbuktu in the early Middle Ages.
Ok, I support Africans and I think everyone should have a chance to live, to not think constantly about where to find potable water, have an education, have a home...etc. But when was Africa the central of knowledge? Also have you noticed that majority of immigrants (not only Africans) are men? They leave their children and women to basically die, while they come here with "inspiring" speeches instead of helping their's families
Well, they don't just leave them, normally they try to get a job and send as much money as possible back to their families, not only because it has often more value in those countries but also to repay the depts the family may made to even afford his migration to 'First World Countries'.
Ludwig Pflug the majority, they DO just leave them, I see pictures of dudes from 15 to 30 or so old immigrants , why women aren't crossing their country to find a better to live?, and don't go and tell me that there are women and children immigrants too, NO, the majority ( as 70-80%) are men who just leave them and only care about them selfs.
You've got a point there, but please consider as well that women and men are often not equal in those countries. 'Men are stronger and work harder' could be one statement to justify that men are goint rather than women. I'm interested in your source(s) 'cause I can't believe they just leave and don't care. I'm quite into this subject and even worked togehter with migrants. And based on my experiences I don't think that all you said is right.
ZechsMerquise73 It still amazes me the amount and degree of mental gymnastics, even beyond Afrocentric pseudo-history and pseudo-science, that you people engage in. I'm not talking about the Belgians genociding -- I acknowledge that that is a historical fact. However, the narrative of native African knowledge being learned by Europeans -- and even so convenient as to be stopped right when the Belgians invaded -- is utter bullshit. What's more puzzling is how you can still claim this intellectual African exceptionalism when you yourself just admitted that whiteys are always invading you. Let's be honest about this, now: No true people possessing exceptional power as you suggest that the Africans did would be so utterly outclassed and conquered by another group of people like what the Africans experienced at the hands of the Europeans, and I'm not just talking about military knowledge/technology, either; even if most Africans were mainly economically or politically sufficiently advanced, they still would have put up a much greater fight even with inferior military weaponry (just look at one of the rare exceptions among Africans, the Zulus, and how they fought the British; unfortunately they were very much the exception and not the rule). So yeah, to claim African intellectual superiority and being so utterly overwhelmed by supposed equals or inferiors whiteys' conquests in the same sentence is just textbook example of self-delusion.
I don't know so much about again, but if we're going to do anything for Africa, we need to be able to have an adult conversation about IQ; it's validity for measuring intellect (or at the very least the kind of intellect needed to maintain a first word society), it's heritability, and it's unequal representation among varying ethnicities. There are enough of us high IQ Blacks to do something about the state of our homeland, if only we put aside our childish insecurities regarding this controversial matter and work towards a viable solution. We actually have a pretty good idea of what constitutes high intelligence from a neuroanatomical perspective, we just won't admit it due to it's correlation with race. Now as it happens, impossibly complex though the neuronal architecture of the Human brain may be, the neuroanatomical differences that separate a low IQ brain from a high IQ brain, most of it is actually fairly simple. It comes down to neurological horsepower for the most part; neuronal, axonal, and glial density, thicker myeiln sheaths, more neural mitochondria, etc. All of which should be easy to select for among embryos, given that the genetic casues of most of these neurological traits are fairly simple and is what sepparates us from Chimpanzees (we have the same brains, only ours undergo three more rounds of cellular division during gestation), as well as there being pharmacological strategies to enhance these before mention neurological traits in adults.
No IQ isn't relevant at all, when we talk about knowledge, IQ is and always will be irrelevant. What is relevant is education, Period. End of the discussion. Case closed.
"Education" in that sense is such a loose term. More often that not it's just state propaganda or thought control, it just depends on who's doing the educating.
This a very important topic and talk. Africa has been the cradle of civilization, having great societies and and empires while the Europeans were still living in caves. From the invention of iron smelting to the great library of Alexandria to the incredible advances in science from the Muslim world, Africa has led the way. And has lost the way. The slave trade, European colonization and the exploitive regimes created as a result have made a science of inequality. It is one thing to say Africa must become a knowledge centre for the world. How can we make that happen? "Africa" is not a homogeneous continent. It has vast differences in terrain, politics, beliefs and resources. What should be the next step?
The library of Alexandria is probably not a great argument for African superiority, since the whole city was founded by a Macedonian. The country was ruled by a Macedonian dynasty. The most famous scholar of Alexandria was born in Italy. Also, these great advances of science in the Muslim world might not sound that amazing once you realize that they originated from Hellenic areas conquered from Rome. Especially, since the amount of those achievements started to quickly drop in frequency as the population became increasingly Muslim. Also, European slave trade was tiny and short lived in Africa. The main slavers were Africans themselves and Arabs. You somehow managed to post a full paragraph of text with a number of points, but every single one of them is either grossly ignorant or an outright lie. Good post otherwise.
Antti but you are assuming that the knowledge was created when the library was founded. We are talking about technical acheivements well before Greek/Roman occupation. Not to mention the knowledge in Timbuktu libraries in west africa. Not to mention the fact that west africans already worked out the mathematics of computer science well before Europeans.
Then dont get me started on all of the medical knowledge in Africa. The American Medical association has already told the truth regarding that they learned how to do successful c-section operations from Africans.
"This a very important topic and talk. Africa has been the cradle of civilization, having great societies and and empires while the Europeans were still living in caves." *HA HA HA, PEOPLE ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS.*
Good, knowledge!.he's right. But knowledge isn't enough. what about character and evil systemic governance. Also, neo colonialism and also modern day imperialism.
The first step is to stop pretending it ever was a centre of knowledge to begin with. Until then, you won't cease introspecting for knowledge while the vast knowledge of far superior civilizations lay all around, waiting to be plucked.
Change African to your favorite third world country. Automatic relevance. Some of these commentators need to learn to see the message beyond the narrative.
I hope africans learn in school that we all come from africa! Evolution started there. Which is awesome. I hope they know about it. ;) Great place. Human life, 2,8 million years ago.
Mesopotamia and sumerian region alongside with ancient Greece and India contributed to humanity later but these all cultures were influenced by African one.
Actually as TED aims at bringing knowledge to humans, white European/American people are representing a minority in the world, much more than Asian or African! Basic geography and numbers.
This is 3rd grade knowledge mixed in with well-wishes, this talk was useless. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy used this as a springboard to run as another useless politician.
I didnt watch the video, but the title is just stupid. If any country/continent is the center of anything, is because they promote that. África should stop their civil wars, make a campaing against AIDS, and then start to build a good education system.
how so? I thought Imperialism was an economical issue? For your consideration, I suggest that you watch a documentary on Thomas Sankara called "Thomas Sankara: The Upright Man" I have provided the link below: ruclips.net/video/kItKeYK9D3k/видео.html

It is true. The value of academia must first be realised before any advancement can begin. This is true for any place where people exist. It is knowledge that enables everything.
Yass! 🎯🎯
This man made this speech for the people who read and know little in what world do they live. I wish a world where people read
He is embedding the word in our minds to inspire us
It is true that the pursuit of knowledge will help the development of the African continent, but you can't just ignore the fact that Africa has cards stacked against it. Geographically, rivers can't contribute as easily to long distance trade because of huge waterfalls, isolating landlocked territories. And then there is the problem of the resource curse; as long as governments can rely on natural resources to enrich themselves and stabilize their power, there is no incentive to invest in the education and well being of the people.
It had nothing to do with geography and everything to do with European savagery in colonializing the continent... twice.
One must also have wisdom to apply that knowleadge
MOSSZEEE yes knowledge without wisdom is not very useful

The truth is racist. There are differences between races.
olli tuovinen Says who?
Your knowledge from a youtube video.
Please keep us away from knowing your degenerate manners.

Mathias, your knowledge comes from lies. Olli is absolutely correct. Prove him wrong instead of just insulting him.

No solid solutions, it's easy to say what should be done.
yep, this is virtue signalling
I wouldn't be surprised to hear him run as a politician.

Maybe because we stopped it, unline asians and africans?
I think you're actually arguing for slavery here
Europeans slavers did things like chopped peoples limbs until they died in front of other slaves to invoke fear and maintain control
It's pure evil
So what!? What does it change?

Aelin Galathynius Mali Empire in Timbuktu over 25k students in middle ages. Ancient Kemet (Egypt) ask the Greeks where they went to study

IQ is not fixed since birth.. It can be trained and changed through life and education, etc. ;) Neuroplasticity, also.
Joannot Fampionona if iq is irrelevant, why not educate the lemurs of Madagascar and make a lemur empire?
Joannot Fampionona High IQ makes it far easier to gain knowledge

Replace knowledge with any noun. The whole speech still understandable. That how pointless the word here
This a very important topic and talk.
You seem to very well informed on the history of the continent. What do you see as the next step to bring Africa forward?
Antti but you are assuming that the knowledge was created when the library was founded. We are talking about technical acheivements well before Greek/Roman occupation. Not to mention the knowledge in Timbuktu libraries in west africa. Not to mention the fact that west africans already worked out the mathematics of computer science well before Europeans.
Then dont get me started on all of the medical knowledge in Africa. The American Medical association has already told the truth regarding that they learned how to do successful c-section operations from Africans.
"This a very important topic and talk. Africa has been the cradle of civilization, having great societies and and empires while the Europeans were still living in caves."
*HA HA HA, PEOPLE ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS.*
So it must compared to anywhere else on earth? Not related to race at all....
When has Africa been "the center of knowledge"?
At 1:30 min I stopped it as nothing was really being said.
I want a shout-out
Good, knowledge!.he's right. But knowledge isn't enough. what about character and evil systemic governance. Also, neo colonialism and also modern day imperialism.
Was Africa a center of knowledge ever? (I am not talking about Mediterranean)
The first step is to stop pretending it ever was a centre of knowledge to begin with. Until then, you won't cease introspecting for knowledge while the vast knowledge of far superior civilizations lay all around, waiting to be plucked.
Good topic, but the way he presented it was bad, he almost sent me to sleep.
Change African to your favorite third world country. Automatic relevance. Some of these commentators need to learn to see the message beyond the narrative.
WE
...become a center of knowledge AGAIN? Has it ever been a center of knowledge?
One of the greatest atrocities in Africa:
Every sixty seconds, a minute passes.
Wtf i posted this meme on face book 3 years ago
Michael Baird You sir, are a Mastermind if you posted this meme. We salute you!
What are you implying. That they should vanish?
I hope africans learn in school that we all come from africa! Evolution started there. Which is awesome. I hope they know about it. ;) Great place. Human life, 2,8 million years ago.
Evolution might have started but other races have evolved quite a bit further since then.
The Knowledge Guy....Lmao
WE WUZ KANGZ AN SHEET
Birthplace of the humanity
Aarav Mishra birth place of humanity is Iraq and also Egypt
Mesopotamia and sumerian region alongside with ancient Greece and India contributed to humanity later but these all cultures were influenced by African one.
Lucas D your geographical Location is clouding your judgment to come up with an unbiased conclusion.
Apple's lover No... Biologically, East Africa. Culturally, "nowhere". Iraq doesn't fit into the description
Aarav Mishra No. it has been consistently disproven that Europeans have come out of Africa
It's nothing to do with government corruption, just lack of knowledge. Yeah, cool story bro.
Alberts stuff Ted wouldn't let him talk about bad governance and corruption.
Why don't you leave this for African channels, why this constant focus on minorities?
Actually as TED aims at bringing knowledge to humans, white European/American people are representing a minority in the world, much more than Asian or African! Basic geography and numbers.
Because of bigotry like this maybe?
"oh its bigotry to teach the africans"
This is something everyone should know. And many do not ... This is an extremely important topic and valuable points are being made.
This is 3rd grade knowledge mixed in with well-wishes, this talk was useless. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy used this as a springboard to run as another useless politician.
No ...
Again? Lmfao.
WHY IS THIS IN MY RECOMMEND WTF EVEN IS THIS
WE WUZ KANGZ 'N SHIEET
I didnt watch the video, but the title is just stupid. If any country/continent is the center of anything, is because they promote that. África should stop their civil wars, make a campaing against AIDS, and then start to build a good education system.
The only thing that is going to help Africa at this point is genetic engineering.
how so? I thought Imperialism was an economical issue? For your consideration, I suggest that you watch a documentary on Thomas Sankara called "Thomas Sankara: The Upright Man" I have provided the link below:

I hope africans learn in school that we all come from africa! Evolution started there. Which is awesome. I hope they know about it. ;) Great place. Human life, 2,8 million years ago. The continent of life/wisdom. ;)
Again? UGH!!!
LOL nice try making Africa look good.
"again" hahaha
lol
MAGA, make Africa great again lol
This speech was a bunch of nothing
((((((Again)))))) L M A O
Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Start there. Make sure your fear of God is reverential and honest, then spread that fear of the Lord, people will gain wisdom and knowledge through the fear of the Lord! Peace be with you.
Oh and silence! Haters! Have you not voiced your concern! Worldwide platform, that's my brother as well as you hater or sister which ever fits!
again?
WE
Again?
