£274 - Wu Zetian was the de facto ruler of the Tang dynasty from 665 to 705, ruling initally through others - first as empress consort and later as empress dowager - and then in her own right as empress regnant. During her reign, China became a Great Power of the world, culture and economy were revitalized, the University of Sankore was founded, and corruption in the court was reduced.
8:13 To answer your question if cats always land on their feet. They have a inbuilt reflex system that allows them to orient themselves and land on their feet. However they don’t always land on their feet. That is just a legend spread by the spy network of Wu Zetian. Because they want to thank the heroic cats that TOTALLY killed all the barbs single-handedly
Squirrels, on the other hand, actually do always land on their feet. (Unless they're unconscious or something when they fall, I guess.) They can survive a fall from any height!
Watching Ursa's follower count grow from 15k when I started watching to 27k is the epitome of 'hard work pays off' - thanks for uploading Ryan, you give us all something to look forward to after work!
Just reminded of that scene in Big Hero 6 with a battery drained Baymax holding and petty the cat. “Fuuuurrry baby”. May the Cat Prince enjoy all the pampering.
Ages ago on a radio program, I came to learn of a farcical competition, in which contestants would submit proposals for outlandish inventions. One submission that stood out was the idea of creating the infrastructure for a national monorail, based on the notions that cats always land on their feet and buttered toast always lands butter side down. Inventor suggested constructing the railbed by connecting a series of cats, each standing on the buttered side of a slice of toast. In theory the chain of cat/toast assemblies would levitate perpetually. If the toast were to flip and land buttered side down, then the cat would land on its back. I still giggle every time this pops into my head.
28:53 i was thinking that sounds like something my cats would do right before you said it 😹 😸 i loved the cat lore this episode. laughed quite a lot watching this one.
When I played her, I just stuck spies in the tech leader’s campus cities and focused on getting culture for myself. Getting the increased Eureka boost over and over again was nice to keep my science relevant as I pursued other goals.
If you werent actually aware, tile improvements for the most part, have different animations and looks depending on whether the tile has a resource and if it's currently being worked or not. Thats why pastures will sometimes have the livestock outside
Fabricate scandal can occasionally be so good mid/late game. Especially with cards that shorten mission time. I once got the Fabricate Scandal promotion and the No Time to Establish promotion on same spy. I yeeted so many AI envoys.
36:52 Yes, the Fabricate Scandal mission last double the time of the other missions so if you want a spy that is dedicated to that it is important for them to have "Linguist" promotion and "Machiavellianism" card slotted. However there is a reason for needing to be longer. The Fabricate Scandal's true power is that its effectiveness greatly improves as the Spy gains more promotions. I don't remember exactly how many but I think for every promotion the spy has the mission removes +3 more envoys removed. So a Master Spy with all 3 promotions is able to remove 12 envoys(!) with every successful mission. It does NOT depend on the "level" of the mission itself, that increases the success rate of the mission itself, the number envoys removed depend on the spy's promotion levels. One might not think this is a big deal but think of what this means! Not only the you can gain suzerainty of the city state easier. If you look at a scientific city state and remove the envoys of the Deity AI to be below 3 that means it will loose all the passive science gained through the city state in all their Universities and Research Labs. This also removes the great passive base bonus of the Deity AI has on all of its yields. Depending on how the AI's empire is built just a few good Scandal missions can significantly reduce the AI's yields they get through city states.
Yongle is definitely my leader in my next game, but Wu looks pretty interesting too. Being able to steal tech boosts that are 50% of a tech could make it a lot easier to catch up late game.
personally i find the worst boost from tribal huts are Early Empire because it's easy to get and Archery because i always get a slinger early in part to get that boost. Iron Working is also super frustrating because if i wanted to unlock swordsmen i would get an iron mine, so either i don't want it or i was about to get it
people eat marsh in all the habitat that was removed. While many plants wont be edible, but there are birds, reptiles, insects, fish and even mammals in that habitat.
The Cat Prince standing off against the barb camp made me think of another cat aphorism: "As hard as a cat's head." Not sure where it comes from, or whether it's true, but it seemed apropos.
Haven’t watched through all of it yet but I’m down for a spy game. I did one recently and I used a strat I don’t see talked about very often. I gave victor his 3rd promotion which grants a level of any units trained in the city. I used that city to create spies and they came out with a promotion right away. I bet this leader is one of the few that could realistically on deity have spies out and then complete Terracota Army which gives all your spies a level.
18:35 Indeed, lions are just oafish cats. Too large an inefficient utterly unrefined compared to their cousins, they waste so much time acquiring food themselves rather than outsourcing it to humanity.
Convenient now that we're at a spy game, but I feel like scouts should be able to converted/upgraded/promoted into spies. They're useless by like the industrial era as rangers - maybe the final promotion on the scout tree could be turning it into a spy, or going for the intelligence agency allows you to upgrade rangers into spies. Some toying with scout capacity might need to happen to make it work, but it would make scout units a bit more interesting in the mid-to-late game.
15:35 All the cows are outside because there's not a citizen working the tile. EDIT: And as I see this has been pointed out a few times, to make this comment more useful - Ursa not liking spies is basically a meme now, but what do they need for him to get on board? Seems a big issue he has is the time it takes to travel/establish/carry out missions so cutting down the turn counts on those or giving them some way to get an immediate benefit might be the way to go. I actually find it really funny how different Ursa's opinion/experience with spies is compared to just about every other big RUclips Civ player.
Speed and usefulness yopu actually get from them compared to the RNG of using them. I'm not saying they don't have a use - I just use them for the +3 combat diplo visability. Everything else can be done quicker with a pillaging light cav unit =)
Is it just me, or that lake Ursa founded his capital at looks like a.... erm, well... standing 'tiger', with its tip pointing towards lovely miss Wu and her city. Also, that one heroic defender gotta be the most veteran of scouts in the history of all Civ games. (Disregarding upgrades like Rangers.) Also also, Settlers with promotions sound like settling in Humankind. Where you can get some bonuses before settling down if you do certain things. Here maybe you could get promotions like 'Druids' which would give an extra faith on the tile you settle. Missionaries even, in later eras. Or 'Warriors', and you get a melee unit when you settle.
what a good start for the GREAT Zimbabwe +24 gold for each trade route if settle in place Edit: that was from turn 0, after Ursa explored a little he found more bonus resources we jump to +32 (3 new bonus resources + not need to sacrifice one bonus tile for the great zibabwe)
i'm currently , extra enjoying my Wu Zetian play through. I've never declared war, but have been attack, and dragged into one via alliance , killed kupe who settled my land, and put Gitarja in her place for dragging me into a war. oh and australia is I think my ally's next target.
22:10 … South China Sea eh. If you don’t settle those barren desert islands in the middle, I will have to download this map myself to complete the obvious mission.
Amateur civ player here, why didn't the game allow to build the Temple of Artemis right next to the city on the stone - only because Mining was missing or something else? If I read the map correctly, that would have been the ideal spot to place the wonder if you don't want the Barbarians to disrupt building it, albeit slightly slower because you have to get extra tech first, right?
what if hic sun dracones allowed for leveled up settlers and you could settle multiple cities with it? Maximum of 2 level ups though, unless other promotions gave benefits usually provided by government plaza buildings?
How is it that two people got to this video before me? I'm sitting here, I get the announcement, I click, and there are already two likes?! Whoever you are, you're quick!
"You should subscribe to the channel ... and if you don't, she's gonna spy on you." But how would Wu know whether someone's subscribed? Is it all a bluff, or will she be spying on everyone regardless of whether or not they're subscribed?
This is the perfect game for Great Zimbabwe, if you don't build it in your capital this game I'm going to be so disappointed. 15 bonus resources visible in the cap at game start with a viable tile for the wonder.
Ursa Ryan cleverly makes every playthrough look special, but let's be honest: For the average player, Wu Zetian is by far the weakest of the three new China leaders.
Could you call one city Fushal? The holy cat city told of by Cloister the Stupid, also known as the Holy Poppadum, who is God in the religion of the Felis sapiens who had evolved on Red Dwarf, as recorded in the cat holy book, the Book of Smeg.

My cat used to fall/jump off many of my tall dresseres when they were younger. They'd land well almost all the time. Pretty cool to see it in action.
I remember hearing/reading that cats falling from greater heights are ironically safer as they will have more time to adjust in the air.
lenny you had me for about half of that comment well done
