I’ve been waiting for a mackerel catch and cook for so long!!! On the Oceanside CA pier you’re basically guaranteed to get a 5 gallon bucket full of pacific mackerel. I think they’re a bit smaller and bonier, when I cook them sometimes it’s better than tuna (sashimi, Spicy tuna rolls, pan fried or in some sort of casserole) but it can be hit or miss for me, sometimes it’s so bad I want to throw up and stop fishing for a couple days 😅

Alot of cultures consider herring, cod, and mackerel a staple in their diet, as you mentioned on another episode. " There is no bad fish, just bad cooks". If a fish, as I understand it, starts having a fishy smell, or taste, it is starting to go bad. You take care of your fish, so it shouldn't taste fishy. Catfish, and tilapia have almost the same flavor, kind of muddy. But treated right, soaked in cold water and salt. Then fried in bacon grease, and onions, they taste phenomenal. So good job. Made me hungry.

    We ate mackerel a lot,
And all of the bait fish you got
    They are NOT Trash fish,
They maybe “Trash Fish” to Americans because we have so much food or fish to choose from.
But outside the United States, these are FOOD/ primary source of protein...
And they taste good, by just cooking them simply without the “fancy” spices we have here...
Just salt them and throw in the open fire/grill... they are as good as any other fish!
-😍 your show as well as Brooks!

I trained in a Japanese kitchen and mackerels were a staple. We used to gut them. Heavily salt the inside , lightly salt the outside. Throw the whole fish on a grill and give it a good char. The fish then peels away from the bone in long pickle spear like quarters. Dip in a little ponzu to cut the oil and some ground daikon radish and green onion. Fantastic! Absolutely fell in love with mackerel ever since.

Where I am from Mackerel is almost the only fish we eat and the one we wait for in the spring. They arrive in may. I always catch enough mackerel while fishing for seabass (European, Branzino) and keep a few to bring home while releasing all seabass. Many ways to cook Mackerel, I even tried cooked in water with white wine and spices (court bouillon) then eaten cold with mayo. (like eating crab just not as good). So in june get on the boat before sun rise, hunt for seabass all morning, come back for lunch with few mackerel cleaned on the boat, (no cleaning with fresh water), set the bbq with coal or wood even better, just rub inside and out with olive oil salt and pepper and lay them straight on their back, try to find the correct balance to have them stay straight on their back as this is the thickest part to cook and you will not have to turn them at the risk of damaging their skin if it sticks to the grill. When the flesh is white inside they are done. Eat simply with new potatoes fresh out of the garden simply boiled with skin then dried in the pot with lots of salt. A nice glass of local cider and you are set. It is still early afternoon but you feel already that the day was successful, it is going to be a great summer, the grass is thick, the garden is full of aromas. Note that some will disagree and eat the seabass, Seabass is for fishing fun, mackerel for eating and tests better to me.

    Hey Viktor
Love your's and Brooke's videos. I have seen you hand catch the DJI in a few videos and wanted to give you a little tip. If you go into the settings on the controller 3 dots upper right corner which is general settings> visual navigation> advanced> landing protection> disable. It, it will not rev-up and try to get away from you when you are hand catching it. You will be able to reach up grab it, and with your other had push down on the joystick and it will nicely shut off in your hand. Hope you can use this technique. Keep the great videos coming Congrats on the engagement and the new house.

Gut them, wash out the bloodline along the spine in the gut cavity then cook them whole. Eat with your fingers, the dark meat is the tastiest bit. Should mention, it is an oily fish. If you like mild fish and eating clean fish (minimal flavouring/sauces), i wouldn't suggest this one.
The fish oil in this is quite strong, so you need acidity to cut the fishiness.
    However, extremely good eating fish

sir just want to add that as long as it is kept on ice and gutted after being caught,, the Mackerel is always excellent the first night,,I learned this in 1980 when I would go on the party boats off Long island,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and by the way the person who said bluefish is no good,,,,,,,,,,,, well he is wrong ,, like you said,, it must be gutted and put on ice immediately,, then the first night it is also excellent
