This one is tough both Matamps sounded phenomenal. But I think the high end character of the GT1 just does it for me in a mix. Right amount of sizzle with not to much white noise along with it.
The Gt120 had the sizzle that I like. Both Matamp cut through great. They all sound amazing.
It might be because I'm going through a Sunn phase, but I like the Sunn tone the best, with Orange behind it.
The matamps all the way in the mix!!! But I imagine one of those and the sunn would pair well in stereo.
Specifically, i vote for the GT120
Surprisingly, the GT1 sounded best to my ears.

Model t does one good sound and that’s it (but of cause it’s killer) but the white one just sounds good
I’d almost give an arm and a leg for any of those amps, they all sound awesome, but the Matamp GT1 just sounded absolutely perfect here. Man I wish my dream amps were a bit cheaper haha. Keep up the awesome videos, you channel has quickly became my go to channel for doom gear!

I would advise against giving an arm for a guitar amp. Opt for both legs, or you will be spending a lot of time staring at your new amp.

Yeah, i like both Matamps. the Green has a certain kind of fuzz/sizzle in the Top End, which makes it cut more through the mix but it still keeps it together
That Green sounds like a real firebreather.

Matamp GT120 was the best all around for me. It cut through the mix and sounded awesome solo as well.
I like to think that if the OR120 and Model T had a baby, it'd be something like the GT120. There's something in the metallic, grinding upper mids that sounds very similar between the Model T and the GT120. I love them all but I think my vote is for the GT120 as the best overall.
If i was gonna go no pedals, guitar straight into amp it would be the GT120. I love pedals too much, though, so the GT1 is my pick.

Matamp GT 120 MV. But it’s a close call.
I think for me the Matamp gt1 (the white amp) sounds the best. Also I like to look at which amp I can afford/get. The sunn is around 5k to buy, so no, the orange or120 reissue is around 3-4k, but the Matamps are affordable. I love the gt1 and I can't wait to receive mine. All great amps though!
Matamp GT120 for me.
I love the Model T sound, but the Matamps really stood out for me here, especially the low end of the GT120. The Orange sounded kind of lifeless next to the rest, especially during the 'In the mix' section without pedals.
Yeah that OR120 just never did it for me . It’s kind of a boring amp iMO.
1) Sunn 2) GT1 3) GT120 4) OR120. All these sounded great I. The mix for different reasons. The matamps surprised me with how they stood out in the “solo” section of the mix but the Sunn sounded the best to me overall. Another great video!
GT1 sounds the best of the bunch *on its own* here so it gets my vote.
While they all sounded great, I was surprised that I didn't like the Model T or GT120MV as much as I thought I would! For me the GT1 takes it, it has that nice high-end that sounds so pleasant to my ears
This is tough. I have a ‘72 OR120 and it sounds way better than the one you have here. The GT120MV is a stone cold classic. But in this video the GT1 has richer mids than the GT120. Final answer: GT1 was my favorite here.
GT1 gets it for me, which is very helpful as I’m planning to buy a Matamp soon & am trying to decide what fits me best. Thinking it’s going to be a GT2 as I like having the channel switching capabilities. GT120MV was a close second though.

Very lucky to say I own 3 of those 4 Amps. Had the model t for nearly 20 years (Gen 1 & 2) Sold my Gen 2 to purchase both GT120 & GT1. They’re all sensational amps & do their own thing. The one I’d least likely part with is my Gen 1 Model T … absolutely monstrous when cranked))) Nice vid Zach 💪🏼 Look forward to the solid state section coming next.
Getting rid of my Model T has been one of my biggest regrets . But at the time I had my GT120 and that’s all I used . I would love to get another T soon . But with the prices of them now a days . I don’t think that will ever happen again unfortunately. Thank you for checking this one out ! I hope your enjoyed it .
What a brutal round! I can't believe I'm saying this, considering I own or have owned the GT120MV, OR120 and a T... but that GT1 gets my vote.
I'd be curious if an Orange Overdrive master volume would hang better with that crowd.

It’s one of my favorite amps I own . It’s such a solid amp .
I own a GT1 and love it. One thing I wish was compared in the video is the amp set to master volume mode or "GTO" I think? To me this changes the response to pedals a lot and I prefer it if I'm using fuzz in front of the amp. If I want the gain from the amp only, that's when I would use it in master volume mode.
For my the GT1 took first place… It just has such a resonating musical growl to it, really cuts, has great note separation, yet retains its thick low end. I felt this way in both in the mix and when it was just the amp… really making me want one now. I thought the GT120 was a close second, but the GT1 took first for me, just because of all the qualities I mentioned. The Sunn was great too, but just didn’t have some of the things I really liked about the GT1. Being a huge Orange fan, especially the Rockerverb, I was surprised at how much the OR120 didn’t resonate with me… it sounded muffled and lacking in dynamics, both in the mix and alone. I just did not have the grunt or cut of any of the other amps, and sounded like I was listening to it through the wall, from the room next door.
Man I want a GT1, damn it!
On this round, the GT1 really stood out, followed by the Model T. The OR 120 sounded super cool but I see it mostly kicking asses for desert rock / revival rock infused type of stoner, even for psych rather than for any doom / sludge etc. The GT120 sounded very good but I felt it had less character than the three others. So my vote goes to the GT1!
That being said, this is what I prefer on their own or with the Massif, it could be very different with other pedals etc.
The gt-120 did it for me enough gain on tap, it’s and amazing pedal platform and sounds phenomenal in the mix.

My vote is for the GT120. The GT1 wins it in the mix, i think (although the GT120 and GT1 sounded pretty close, I think), but the GT120 wins overall for me.

All excellent amps, though the Orange disappointed me a bit. It was a bit anemic in the mix, and didnt take off like id expect (having an Orange amp i adore myself).
I have a GT1 and im still in the process of bonding with it but this video tells me i made the right decision. So far the amp took every pedal without overcompressing or choking out like my dual dark 100 used to...
Very solid choice iMO . I think the GT1 is just a better amp overall compare to the Dual Dark . We did that amp last round and it really didn’t do it for me .
Yeah, it's still the Model T for me. The Matamps sound killer though. I'm kinda surprised about the Orange. I wouldn't call it anemic or anything but it's not as brawny as I expected.
Matamp GT120!
Damn!... :D I have to say Sunn Model T is the winner. Super super close second is the GT1. The sunn is a little "smoother" to my ears. Next is the GT120 sounding decent but a bit spitty/fizzy in the highs. Last is the Orange OR120, by a lot, here, in this company at least, it sounded somewhat gutless. I was hoping that it would not be the Model T so i would not feed the cult and resulting price increase... but... That said, i would get the GT1 as it is still available new for an acceptable price. So sound wise: Model T, realistic buyers choice: GT1 especially if they sound so close to my ears that i couldn't justify the price difference.
All great points . I really hope will have a affordable model T soon . But I highly doubt that 👎🏻. I can’t recommend Matamp enough . My experience with them was amazing .Hayden and his team right now are doing great things .
@@FuzzedDrones I like Matamp in general. In the back of my head i wanted to get the GT120 at the right time ( read: have enough money to burn as it is kind of a vanity item for me ) but now i think i will go for the GT1. Yours is the MK I or MK II? any difference there?
P.S. regarding the Model T, i expect the new model T - if it comes out - to be double the price of the GT1, and the GT120 for that matter, at the very least. Probably more. So there is that, regarding my "conclusion" in the original coment :)
The OR120 in this example is also the 90's version made for Gibson by Matamp, you can always quickly tell by the "skinny n". IIRC it isnt quite the same design as a 70's OR120 and the 70's tones are a bit more...dense? chewy?
I would take the gt1. Only thing I didn't like is how diming the master volume changed the sound.

Matamp GT-120MV on its own with no pedals.Fzach ! No such thing as clean tones. That's awesome. Down to the matter though. They are all ridiculously great amps. With pedals makes a world of difference. I own the Gt120 and two Sunns for the reason that they are the pinnacle of overdriven fuzz amps with completely different sounds that compliment each other so well. The Orange while still great sounds like rattling aluminum foil to my ears. Gt1 sounded good. No personal experience with that one though. I also own a Laney AOR 100 Pro tube lead and can attest to that being the ultimate Doom sound. Thanks guys. This was an amazing shootout. Great work gang!

I had a first gen model t and it was awesome, then I got a gt150 and it just did more for me. Also have a gt2 which is a bit more versatile with 2 channels. In this video I think I like the gt120 by a c-hair.
I would have loved to have a gt2 in this video . That’s one amp I’ve been dying to try .
This one is tough between the two Matamps, they both kill it, but the GT1 takes it for me.

GT-120, 2nd GT-1 to me, I associate the Model T sound more for modern stuff but might be deftones fault!
FYI Hillbish has his GT120 pcb's and chasis' back in stock. Same guy that makes the sunn beta pre Buzz uses from the Melvins.
I saw that a few days ago . It definitely peaked my interest. But I knew I would never have time to get it done . But a great option for people who want that Gt120 tone .
This one was really close, they all sound good. I guess I’ll go with the Matamp GT1 just because it had the most wool to my ears, but damn it was close!

I was surprised by this one, I was almost positive I would vote for the model T going into the video. But after watching I think the Matamp GT120 get my vote!

Great shootout/great playing. I liked the GT120MV amp overall. It had great presence and more grind all around. The old model T is my personal favorite, as I've owned a Gen1 for 42 years (just outta high school). The Gen2 sounded very good as my #2 pick. It has that familiar initial model T attack that lets off and breathes a bit more than the other three for that classic feel of the 1970's. I was curious to hear how that mid-select switch would work to alter the tone. That could be a vid all its own, as I have yet to see/hear a vid of that feature anywhere on this planet. The other two amps were solid, but further behind the top two.
I have paired the model T with some Carvin version of what I now know as Eminence built speakers, but my fave is an EVM12L I stumbled across years ago, now paired with an Eminence Swamp Thang.
Thanks for voting ! The reason the mid switch wasn’t used is because this is modded to first Gen specs . The Mid switch does nothing now . The seller John bought this amp from said it was apparently part of Fenders arsenal when they did their whole relaunch back in the 2000s . Now how true that is will never know . Apparently they did some mods to it while they had it .

Not a bad sound in the bunch… Matamp GT1 had the most punch, Model T in close second (a bit less “fizzy” at times).

Holy shit that matamp gt120 sounds so good man!! Great channel… impressive video and riffs too! Nice gorilla amp! Is that a tc35 tube cruncher???? Do a vid on that lil guy too that was my very first amp, still have it!
The Green is just over the top, fantastic, very bold. Not for all playing style, but that fizz and boom, amazing. The T is just the perfect balance (ofc way more options there to dial in the tone), ripping but massive headroom also (4 KT-88 are really shining there). The Orange is not that impressive for me, sill fantastic ofc. The White is probably more useful in different scenarios but hell that Green is just bold and beyond! In isolation all good but in the mix, T & Green is best to me in this kinda genre. On that note how the devil did you record these in full volume? :D

Wish someone would demo the Sound City 120 or the non master version of the gt120. GT1 is a great amp though, the guitarist from Frayle does a really good demo of it.
We had the Sound City in this for the clean amp video. But unfortunately it crapped the bed right before we got finished filming it . But we did replace it with a Sound City 50 Plus .

Yeah I was never really a fan of the or120 . I had one for a short period of time and sold . Really don’t miss it at all .
It was pretty dark. I built a 20W amp with an OR120 front end that's quite a bit brighter, but still has that extreme low end.
I was rooting for the GT1 because i like the underdog but the GT120 is the winner. In the mix they were very close but isolated the GT120 pulls a away a bit IMO.
Well that under dog story might come true . The GT1 has been pulling in some strong Votes right now !
I dont know...I think the Sunn Model T edges out the Orange by a hair for the top spot, with white Matamp coming in 3rd, green Matamp coming last. In the mix, the Sunn and Orange sound excellent, while both Matamps just sound meh.
On their own the Matamps sound great though.

Matamp GT120 for me, second is the Sunn Model T. Has a nice mix of meat and ugly dirt.
I played a original Orange Overdrive from the 70ies a few times (as a befriended band, who we share our rehearsal room with has one) it's nice but very clean with not that much gain and ways less volume than I expected.

The T and GT120MV were my top two for sure . The OR120 is just blah for me . I’ve owned one and was never a major fan of it .

This is definitely the toughest round thus far. I'm really impressed by the Matamp GT1, really good tone and sound. I have the Matamp GT120 in preamp pedal format, so I thought the amp would rule. I am a little disappointed in the Orange OR120, I thought it would do better in the mix. I have to give this win to the Sunn O))) Model T by a hair to the Matamp GT1. The amp sounded really well in the mix compared to the others.

Which amp weighs the most of all your amps? I hear the Ampeg V4B is even heavier than the Sunn model T by several pounds. I saw one in a music store once, but it would have been a little rude just to pick it up.
The v4 and V4B have to be my heaviest . I hate moving those things lol

GT1 would be my second choice, it does THAT tone perfectly. hard picking one, but T has wider freq response and while having really distinctive character, IMO it works best for the whole mix, bringing some kind of ambience to the whole record sound @@FuzzedDrones
