I was in the Army, got food poisoning once and ended up in the local, civilian emergency room. Noone at the hospital believed me when I told them what I thought it was. My leadership called to check on me. I told them I ate a fish sandwich at BK on post. They sent preventive medicine over there to inspect it. Sure enough, they had "issues" and were immediately closed. That hospital failed in the health care mission miserably.

In 2010, i went to my doctor of many years feeling chilled and feverish. He told me to go home and go to bed as i was getting the flu. I asked him to listen to my chest as it felt tight, he did that, and told me it was fine . The next day, i asked to be dropped off at the emergency department. After X-rays and tests, i had pneumonia in both lungs and swine flu. Listen to your gut feeling and dont ignore symptoms. Im sure some doctors got their license in a cornflake box.

I had something similar last year, I'm 59 at the time and basically live alone during the week, my husband is only home on weekends. For two weeks I had the stomach flu(so I thought). Then the next two weeks I had diarrhea and continued nausea, but now bowels are excreting straight blood, at least a cup full, not even mixed with mucas and the pain is so excruciatingly painful. When my husband gets home that night he finally drives me to the ER. They think I'm making up the symptoms and aren't even concerned about the blood secretion. They get the extreme pain under control, pat me on the head and send me home with no answers, no avenues to pursue.
Two days later I'm reading online about a peanut butter recall because of salmonella poisoning. My jar of peanut butter coincided with those that were recalled. So the crud of the story is, I had salmonella poisoning for a month and the ER can't even catch it. We don't have healthcare anymore we have sickcare.

Dr. Bishop is a perfect example what is wrong with women's health care. If the solution isn't obvious - just be lazy and dismissive then blame it on menses or ovulation. When I was in the US Army, I broke my hip - it showed up clearly on xrays - they told me I was ovulating and made me go march with a 60-lb backpack - on a broken hip. I found the xrays in my medical records decades later. I got strep throat - they blamed that on PMS. Thank you Dr. Mazar and all the medical professionals who are indeed professionals.

Yes, I was in contact with my out of town Dr who finally advised me to go to local ER. Well that was a nightmare which almost killed me. The ER Dr tried to convince me I was having UTI problems, go figure, I has to get assertive with him before Dr said well if it will make you happy, I'll send you for ultrasound, I said, that will be a start. Skipping forward, had I not been insistent I would not have been sent to a larger cardiac hospital, where I spent the next three days in ICU. I was hemorrhaging under the tissue,ie the discoloration and the severe pain. So sorry for the length of this post, just want to warn, tell you if you are conscious you have to speak up for yourself. I took my husband to the ER because I thought he was going into a coma. The ER doctor ordered xrays of his head because he picked up the chart of the only other person in the ER that day-a woman who fell on her head. They charged us thousands of dollars for irrelevant X-rays and didn’t bother to run tests to see what was really wrong with him.
We went to an Ayurvedic physician who diagnosed him with a rare congenital defect. He is recovering well with this help.

I was finally diagnosed 5 yrs later. By the time they knew it was AS my spine was fused together and now I have permanent nerve damage.

I spent 25 years in the dairy industry in Australia and stuff like this makes me so angry. We always made sure our tankers were washed fully between loads of milk or cream and our systems were regularly checked by not just our own labs, but also external regulatory bodies. Every batch of product was cleared for Salmonella, Listeria, E.coli, Staphylococcus and other dangerous organisms. A simple valve change in a pipe during a run without a proper decontamination and flush before resuming production can cause this sort of problem. Maintenance staff have to work hand in hand with the floor staff and the quality staff to prevent such problems.
This is why Australia has such a rigorous food safety culture. If you knowingly release product to be sold that is contaminated, you face not just a fine of up to half a million dollars PERSONALLY (plant manager, Quality person etc) but also jail time. The company also receives fines of several million dollars per incident. You very rarely hear of anything remotely like this as food recalls are strictly managed and factories are checked often.
In all the years I worked either as a lab tech or in the Quality Dept, I have stopped product from being shipped just on the suspicion of there being an issue - and in every case the product has come through as clear and was released for sale. When you test for Salmonella and Listeria, the process takes 2-3 days and if you get a positive or probable positive on the first part of the test, you are notified by the lab so you can initiate a hold, then after the second stage of analysis over 95% of samples then come back negative. This is because there are some innocuous bacteria/additives/flavourings etc which can give a similar response to the first stage of the test as Salmonella, but will not react to the second stage.

Years ago, I got food poisoning at the church meal provided at my grandmother's funeral service. I think it was from the deviled eggs left out somewhere for some time before serving to us. Eggs cant be left out at room temp for more than 2 hours, more or less, depending on how warm or cold the season. Anyway, since that horrible event I've learned that a bottle of charcoal tablets from the health food store are good to keep handy and to take, in case of food poisoning. The bacteria will adhere to the charcoal and can be flushed out of your system. It really helps me if I suspect food poisoning. But, again, it's always good to do your own research. In the 1950's in Australia canned fruit infected with botulism was sold in small grocery stores. The cannery was a small cannery not licensed to export and did not have a testing laboratory. People who ate the fruit became extremely ill and several of them died. It was found that the cans were not being autoclaved for the correct time and at the correct pressure. Botulism is far more dangerous than salmonella and can kill very rapidly by paralysing the respiratory muscles.

Just thought I would point something out here. At 43:00, there is a backflow prevention assembly (a valve thingy to some) installed in the improper orientation. It's the valve that has the wheels that are locked up with a chain. That backflow prevention assembly is only approved to be installed in the horizontal orientation. I know this because I worked for USC's Foundation for Cross-Connection Control and Hydraulic Research for approximately 20 years. These are the folks that invented the first approval process for backflow preventers, as well as the first field test procedure for them. These valves prevent any sort of contaminated or polluted water from going back into the drinking water system, and if they are not installed correctly, they can fail and cause a good deal of harm to the public. I am pretty certain that this was not the cause of these illnesses, but it is certainly something that could cause cross-contamination with a city's water. it's crazy how missing one thing, like properly cleaning a tanker truck can cause so much damage to the public.

The first cases might have started in Idaho but the outbreak was pretty much nationwide and it was in 1994, not the 1980s. Also salmonella has been a well documented diagnosis since at least the 1950s or so. It's just that many in the general public didn't quite understand it till probably the 2000s or so. And also this documentary was in 2004, apparently, because Jennifer(?), the girl in Orofino, said during her interview something like "here it is 10 years later and I'm still having pain." So the outbreak was in 1994, ten years later was 2004 so this documentary was done roughly 20 years ago now. So I wonder if a "how are they doing now" episode will ever be aired. Probably not because of the current socio-political environment we are in. But we never really know for sure. Maybe later this year (2024) we will get an update on the patients on the anniversary of this broadcast. We will see.

When I actually had a bowel blockage that turned green and ruptured in about four days. Needless to say in the last 4550 years I’ve had numerous operations I had a four and Transplant done an 07. Doing real better but I don’t trust doctors one bit. One of them times I had pick lines in and they said I was coming for the pain medicine, when I was actually having osteomyelitis on my spine. I was raised by my grandparents. Because of what they went through in the early 20th century they never trusted canned food, especially tomatoes, unless the contents were cooked thoroughly. This even applied to canned milk. This is why we need food inspectors in every plant every day. You see the sole purpose of any business is to make the owners rich. Nothing else matters to them, unless someone is standing over their shoulder telling them if you take that shortcut it’s gonna cost you all your money. Next time a politician says we don’t need regulations, think about those two kids who had a serious genetic flaw triggered by a completely preventable illness just because some psychopath saw a chance to get richer.

If you listened carefully, food poisoning usually happens in more than one person. She had a previous history of ovarian and menstrual issues. If the mom and/or dad had eaten the ice cream then all three would have been sickened and pointed to food poisoning. Even the two siblings. Had it not been for the astute lab technician to notice the salmonella they would have likely not known sooner either .

I am lucky though, that we have an extremely responsive and devoted physician caring for our kid. I cannot imagine him being sick for the rest of his life because no one thought of something so simple to take care of! This is why we have doctors, to prevent comments like this from people who think they know as much as a doctor. Appendicitis is not always an easy diagnosis despite tests. A "grumbling appendix" can scar the appendix to the point it cannot rupture and backlog toxins into the intestine. This can go on slowly simmering for over a year in my case and not show up through tests. I don't blame any of the doctors who could not diagnose it.

@@ATebbs1A bit like the NHS in the UK but not as bad. That and the malady many NHS drs suffer from, a god complex. My old GP is a psychopath. Crippled for life by bad faith drs and surgeon...the latter being a shoulder specialist. Turns out he wasn't a knee surgeon at all. Nobody told me. I didn't think I had to ask if he was qualified to operate on a knee. Well you don't do you if you've been referred by your Dr to have a knee stabilisation due to frequent dislocations. You live and learn, but at what price?

There are many nasty people in the food industry. They do not wear hair nets, gloves, wash their hands or clean properly. I see it everyday and it is gross.
Just the other day I was at 711 and I told the employee to wash their contaminated hands before preparing my pizza and they had the balls to get mad at me because I told them to wash their dirty hands. They thought that putting gloves on their nasty hands promptly after rudely accepting my money to deposit into their Cash Register then proceed to walk right past their big stainless steel sink to go place gloves over their contaminated dirty money hands was in compliance with food handlers laws
The 711 cashier walk right past their big stainless steel sink, put gloves on, unwrapped the shrink wrap away from my frozen pizza, picked up a spatula, pizza pan then opened the oven and went right back over to the Cash Register .
Once the pizza was ready they proceeded to perform the same exact movements by walking right past the sink , retrieved gloves then removed my pizza from the oven with the same unwashed spatula , slid the pizza into a cardboard 711 pizza box then picked up a pizza cutter to cut the pizza up, closed the pizza box lid, grabbed napkins and handed the contaminated pizza, pizza box and napkins off to me. I lost my entire appetite.
    Violation after Violation. Wow

Dude if you EAT ANYTHING from 7/11, you're ASKING for food poisoning! Wtf...call the nearest pizza joint and grab it on the way.
Never, EVER let anyone at some gross place like 7/11 touch your friggin food. EVER.
I once saw an Indian guy behind the counter PICKING HIS NOSE. It was a long line and NOBODY NOTICED because they all had their dumb faces in their stupid phones!
One of few times I was rendered speechless. Never trust anyone with your life where food sanitation isn't really a thing in their country (lack of indoor plumbing in many places is just disgusting...look it up in National Geographic, there was an article a few years back...) OR, where they barely make minimum wage.
Look out for a gross house or kitchen and the WORST offenders are often rich people with a dishwasher, a maid AND kids!!
