    We absolutely enjoyed our 1993 Typhoon 4.3 turbo build! But investing so much $$$ to be limited by the “Split-journal” crankshaft was defeating. The NASCAR crankshaft castings were the cure, but nobody supported the platform.
    So, after bending the 4.3 crankshaft around 650hp, Richard decided it was time to LS swap the Typhoon. 👍

      I bet that Typhoon boogies with 650hp. I've ridden in my buddies bolt on Typhoon and it scoots pretty good.

    • @charleslowe522
      @charleslowe522 Год назад

      It is ashame that the Syclone and Typhoon doesn't have the aftermarket support of the GN. It would be great if the LV3 4.3L could be swapped into a Syclone or Typhoon that needs an engine transplant. I have seen several Turbo Buicks swap in the 3800 series II and III, the modern 4.3L v6 in the Syclone or Typhoon would be so awesome. 7 or 8 PSI with the LV3 and you've got more output than the 4.3L from 91.

    I've had about 6 s10 pickups with 4 having the 4.3. It's definitely the best engine the s10s came with. I liked the original style TBI engines the best. My 92 4.3 s10 ran way stronger than my 02 4.3 did. They both were standard cab short beds with 3.42 limited slip rear. The 92 ran 4 tenths better then the 02

      Don't forget the s-15 also came with the 4.3l. Their literally a 350 with the #3 an #8 cut off. Just picked up a 1990 2dr with one an restoring her for shows with original bill of sale. Sadly it's the automatic but plenty of options an a classic 6inch lift to boot.

      @i3loodymoon647 Yeah the S15 is basically the same truck as the s10. The s15's usually have a better looking grill. The 90-93 s15 grill is the best looking one for that body style. One Nice thing about a 4.3 coming in those trucks is that it makes them really easy to swap a small block into them. Back in the day I put a 327 into a 92 s10 and it was little ripper.

    I have the 4.2L Vortec in my 09 Trailblazer LT. The engine is great. I have almost zero complaints about the engine. The transmission, however, blows. My vehicle has never towed anything but very occasionally a fiberglass 10 ft Livingston boat. Its fluids have always been changed regularly. It's always been adult owned and driven, never beat on. And the transmission still only lasted to a little over 130k miles. I elected to have it rebuilt with some upgrades,so it's hopefully a little more durable now. The technician said it was pretty much shredded inside and some stripped splines,badly worn bands and clutches. It was an expensive fix,but it was still much cheaper than buying another vehicle. I can't really even make a complaint about the engine. The only thing that ever went wrong was the exhaust manifold cracked. That's not really anything having to do with engine reliability. It runs so smooth it's hard to tell it's even running.

    Seeing the way how the newer V6 performs It makes me scratch my head as to why the folks at Mopar never produced a V6 version of the 5.7 Hemi. It would sit right around that 4.3-ish displacement and be a better option for use in the Ram 1500 or the other vehicles where low end torque is ideal. It fits that area better than the 3.6L IMO. A 4.3L V6 and a 4.8L I6 based on the 6.4 Hemi that could handle more abuse would probably be a good solution to keep that architecture alive.

    I think that with the 4200 they purposefully didn’t increase the bore size like they did on the 4 and 5 cylinders, left out the VVT on the intake side, and under-tuned it because it would’ve made power numbers too close to the V8’s that they were putting out at the time and would’ve done it with better fuel efficiency. Hugely missed opportunity in my opinion. I think it could’ve easily made 325hp and over 300tq with those changes. And if they would’ve continued developing it and added direct injection like the LV3 has it probably would make similar numbers to it or even better. It’s a very strong motor. As I’m sure you’re aware by now Richard, it’s been pushed to 1000hp revving to 8000rpm by Calvin Nelson. 800hp on a stock bottom end before all the rods simultaneously bent. It’s sad it never got the attention from GM that it deserved.

    VVT is nice until it's not when it breaks. Too much such crap in/on the engines now. They claim it's to improve performance but it's really to pad their pockets. Look at the problem direct injection engines have.
    I had a 1977 351W , stock compression, cam, heads and all I added was a Holley 600cfm, Torker II and duals. 20mpg at 80mph and would spin the tires on a 30mph tromp, stock rear gears from the factory. Then I was transferred and couldn't finish my plans. But we definitely don't need the government telling us what we can and can't drive. Definitely don't need computers and other stuff in our cars with the only purpose is to drive up the cost of operations and to break at an engineered time.

      Yeah the 4.3 remained relatively unchanged right through the GMT900 trucks so right through 2013 lol. The one he tested had Vortec heads on it.. so beyond the balance shaft it was the same engine with the same rated output right to the end. I mean hell, it outlived the Atlas lol

    • @tskraj3190
      @tskraj3190 2 года назад

      @@LSswapGarage1 It outlived the the Atlas but that was mostly due to the Atlas 5 Cylinder engines moving to the Colorados and Canyons and then were phased out by the 3.6L V6. Rich you made the comment that the 4.3 v6 was based off the 350ci v8. What I thought was interesting was that in your configuration, the 4.3 made better numbers than the L48 350ci and close to the L82 350ci found in C3 Corvettes of the '70s and early '80s.

    I think they made the L99 because they were making all the Blazer V6's they could for their hot selling SUV's. I also wonder if they originally wanted to run a 305 in the Caprice but found an LT1 style 305 too close for comfort to the LT1.

  • @jasonrogers9169
    @jasonrogers9169 Год назад +2

    The two variations of the 4.3 the OBD1 era cpi injected was beyond the obd2 mpfi version. Cpi was exclusively for the 4.3 and shared nothing with the V8 but bore and stroke and created more power than the V8 and all 4.3's created after OBD1. GMC took it up one more notch and held a 26 year record with it shaving Corvette parts and adding turbo. Obd2 killed it when it was agreed upon to incorporate a single style fuel injection to aid in universal coding from the top manufacturers the obd2 version became a mini me of the 5.7. pre 96 and post 96 both vortec but completely different animals. 5.7 became a vortec because of the pre 96 4.3 and every vortec after and still til this day.

I tried two other 3.7's and they shift at 6750rpm too (tach bouncing off 7000) With aluminum block and heads, 4 valve per cyl and DOHC its no wonder it puts out 305hp. Take a stock 350/5.7 Vortec block and heads and stuff it with the 4.3 V8 crank and rods, using the stock 350 pistons. This would make a 302/5.0 Chevy. Then compare it with a stock 302/5.0 Ford engine. Use both engines as a base starting point then build them both up using comparable cams and intakes etc. Would make for an interesting comparison.

    Very interesting to see this stuff. Smaller packaged engines have my attention with my Jeep build. I still have the 4.0 but I'm always looking for a cheap alternative that produces more torque per liter while still being not super expensive. All builds are budget builds. Although I'm sparing no expense for the frame and body (TDK frame with an all aluminum body). Damn is it expensive so far. But still cheaper than a new Jeep.
