Madoka is my favourite anime, but it's always bothered me a lot when people who have clearly never watched a single magical girl anime except Madoka call the other ones childish or boring 😔
Yeah That’s kinda sad, What I dislike the most about that labeling is that They are also made for different audience. I also love Madoka\Magia or Railgun and stuff, but also other anime’s I really love. They just label to quickly.
I love darker Magical Girl anime, and was really disappointed with Madoka. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE it, I have nearly all the manga and side stories, but it isn’t dark. The main anime (which is the most referenced as being dark) had just a couple of scenes that stood out as edgy. It’s like they totally overlooked Magical Girl Spec Ops: Asuka, Magical Girl Site, or Magical Girl Apocalypse… and those are just off the top of my head.
@@kidkruschev edgy? Which scenes? Tbh i wouldn't necessarily call it dark but it is a tragedy type story so its more sad i guess? I can kind of see how some ppl call it dark though. Especially if you go in to the show with no knowledge of magical girl shows and thinking theyre all childish. Sorry for bad english
Yes, thank you for this!! I love Madoka, but a lot of people grossly misunderstand the magical girl genre. Granted, Sailor Moon in the US did sanitize and censor a lot of stuff like Hotoru's nightmare about being crucified or Usagi slapping Mecury after Jupiter's death, but magical girl shows in general--especially Princess Tutu and Heartcatch Precure--do explore the emotional impact of trauma.
Yeah people really forget how dark Sailor Moon can get. I mean, it's not like most kids shows kill off most of the main cast...TWICE. The third season of the show also gets into some serious moral questions about whether it's okay for people to die if it's for the greater good. Even Cardcaptor Sakura, which is maybe the least dark show i've seen in a long while, really hammered in the emotion at times, like all the stuff about Sakura's dead mom.
Someone said that Winx Club is trash and girly and is very lighthearted, yet that one has death scenes tho the characters always get restored... Edit: I found someone who thinks Sailor Moon is all light and sparkly just because it was targeted for girls who play with dolls. Someone tried to tell him that it had TONS of dark scenes, and he thought that person was just trying to make it "sound dramatic". Oh boy...
That's why we don't judge a book by its cover. Also, I remember one of the scenes in Winx Club where Riven, one of the Specialists guys, was mentally tortured by the Trix when they imprisoned him at Cloudtower because he was no longer useful to them. The 4Kids dub cut that scene out because I guess it was too dark for kids to watch (and also in this dub he's brainwashed). I watched the Cinelume dub way back (he wasn't brainwashed in this version) and after re-watching it again, I realised that Winx Club was quite dark and not as sparkly as one would think.
I think the reason why people say that is cuz they judge it on face value. The shows come off as happy for loads of episodes with stabbing in the heart moments seeped in. It’s not constantly dark, it’s happy so it’s childish. Happiness is not childish. Madoka magic is one of two of my favourite fictions. I dabble in other magical girl things though. Before Madoka magic I was obsessed with precure.
HHHHHHHHHHH MADOKA IS MY 2ND FAVORITE ANIME (After RGU) BUT IT ALWAYS MAKES ME SO MAD WHEN PEOPLE SAY THAT ALL OTHER MAGICAL GIRL SHOWS ARE BASIC OR SOMETHING 😭Also Minky Momo is my 3rd favorite anime so seeing it get an appearance her jumpscared (/pos) me so bad lol
So true! Also did you ever make a Smile Precure vs Glitter Force Part 2? I remember making a comment under there on another channel and it was important.
I made part 2 back in April of last year but It got taken down by Toei in March. I posted a link to a reupload on my Twitter that's on my Community page.
"Light and friendship" my a** =^= Even kids shows have small hints of dark crap. Yes, Madoka is the most obvious example of a dark magical girl anime but there are others too...albeit not trying waaay too hard... *Looking at Magical Girl Site*

0:17 social distancing, girls!
Tbf, the people who say that only watched like 5 anime and most of that is just mainstream stuff.
Why did the emotional scenes that usually make me cry make me laugh....idk why...maybe it's the Tik Tok sound...I think I need help😂
MAHO AND SMILE THOOOO
To this day I’m still traumatized by that Minky Momo truck episode ;-;
Ro Ro Ro Roll Up To The Graveyard With My Kawaii Pink Hair
Maybe they outta try the subbed version.
Most English dubs censor the sad stuff.
@opalander This is why I always watch anime in Japanese. Nothing wrong with English dub though..
Maybe like 12 years ago but that's not really a thing anymore
