I am 77. When I was young Halloween was one of the most fun times of the year. We could run all over town getting candy and not worry about safety. We didn’t even know about not being safe. We just knew about having a good time. Every house was glad to see us and happy to hand out good candy. Oh how I wish life was still as it was back then.
I too remember when my brothers and my cousins that lived close to us would go door to door trick or treating when we were kids. Even when my six adult children were kids their Dad and I took them house to house and they range in age 50 to 38. Now, my grandchildren have to go to trick or treating on the square and to certain churches that does, trunk or treat. I miss the middle to late 60’s and early 70’s to mid 70’s. I love hearing you tell about your Halloween and your children’s Halloween. As always, thank you for sharing your stories with all of us!!
This story was awesome! I was totally smiling ear to ear listening to the story of the setup that you had for the party! Isn’t it amazing how one can remember such things? I loved hearing how those two little girls made such an impact on that memory. ❤ The party was a job well done, indeed! 😊
How about this…For Halloween, put together a costume and tell us a story. Maybe a couple of green lights 🟢 and a pumpkin. 🎃 What great fun it used to be when we were free to run unaccompanied collecting candy 🍭then coming home to dump out our pillow cases on the living room floor. The neighborhoods were full of kids. Every home had fresh pumpkins with candles inside 🕯️Happy parents at the doors. Simple costumes. When I grew up I had a little witch puppet 🧙♀️that I used to talk to the kiddos with while I hid behind the door. They loved it and would come back to it again. I was born in 1948. Pasadena California USA
My girl is 59 now. When she was small people were just beginning to stop letting kids go to strangers homes for Halloween and if you took your candy to the hospital in our town they would X-ray it for safety. I only took her to family or close friends. I always dressed up with her and we had a fun time every year
Wow! You're Amazingly Talanted Pat! I'm lost for words . . you put your heart and soul into everything that you do. Yes, that's it . . this is what makes you so special 🥰🥰🥰
I wish you had pictures of all those decorations but i can see all of them in my mind! Some of my fondest memories were the years growing up when there was community Halloween party. Most everyone there I went to church with and/or were relatives. They took place at a one room schoolhouse where my dad had attended school. There was a always a costume party and I remember once I had mom and dad let me out of the car ahead of time so I could walk on the gravel road and arrive later than them so no one would know who I was. Such fun.
Granny P., these Halloween memories you've shared are like pure gold to me. I was born on October 31st 1952, and trick-or-treated from the mid-Fifties through the mid-Sixties. It was a time when a band of kids could roam a neighborhood fearlessly and unsupervised. My costumes were always homemade too. Most years I was either a hobo (in my Dad's checkered woolen shirt and cheeks smudged with burned cork) or a gypsy (in petticoats and beads--my paternal grandmother was born on 1900 and had been a flapper in her youth...we still had a trunkful of her duds from that time and my sisters and I gave them a second life). Yes, penny candy! Yes, a Creepy Crawler maker circa 1966 or so (burned a hand badly on that little oven...surely such a dangerous toy wouldn't be sold to kids today). Boy, those were happy times--especially the big pillowcase dumping of the candy loot at evening's end. Your epic Halloween parties sound like the best ever, and I wish I'd been there. A thousand thanks for happy memories! Happy Halloween, dear Pat! 🎃
I’m 68 and I always made my kid’s costumes from scratch. I would let them come up with a theme and we would create it with materials we had in our craft room. I loved this activity! I tried doing the same thing with my granddaughter and she chooses to opt for a commercial costume. Times have changed! Thank you, Granny Pat, for sharing your memories. I love nostalgia and you deliver your impeccable stories with such enthusiasm!❤️🇨🇦🙏
Granny Pat I LOVED hearing about your parties how lucky Jan and Greg were to have a terrific mom like you! ❤ 🎃 I have a few of those paper Maché pumpkins from the 40s that I got at the antique stores a while back and love to light them up too! I hope you can tell us a ghost story for Halloween this year! Just you, a story, and a single taper candle 🕯️ lit! Love you tons! Jeffrey ❤
Mrs Pat I loved listening to your story of Halloween, I just sat here imagining as you described each part, took me back when I was a kid, like you mom made all our costumes, we had a potbelly stove setting in the corner of our living room and we used the soot for our makeup, we carried paper bags, we called them pokes back then to get our candy in, oh I remember the fresh made popcorn balls that was my favorite, though I liked the candy and chewing gum too.Thank you so much for your walk down memory lane, the kids now days will never know what fun we had sadly.
Granny Pat, I enjoyed your Halloween stories so much. I think I would have been scared at your Halloween party. 😮 I always enjoyed Halloween as a child. It was a fun day, plus it's my birthday. Love you!❤
Granny Pat…. I love to hear your stories. I just wished I had wonderful experiences like you to tell about. I guess that’s why I love you and love to listen to you. Loved the Halloween story!
I've had to get creative with participating with how Halloween works now. I happen to be located at the end of a long road in my neighborhood, so we don't get many trick-or-treaters. So for the past 3 years, I've gotten on my bike as Green Lantern and ride around my surrounding neighborhood, giving candy to all the groups of children and parents I meet along the way. It's a great way to get some exercise and helps me participate in the holiday, and gives some sort of unique holiday experiences for the children. Its my own personal tradition at the point, and will try to keep it going as long as I can. It was great to hear the fun and quite different ways people celebrated the holiday in the past. I was a bit surprised in how much more involved people were in the holiday vs today. I feel we have cooler costumes and decorations, but have lost some of the creativity and spirit in the process. Great video as always. God Bless.
I Love listening to your stories of your life. I wish I lived in your era instead of my era .I had an older sister who was wild and crazy . It made 1:40 my youth very hard and traumatic . I was born 1960 . The 70's for me because of my older sister was just insane .
I bet those kids who attended the party remember it to this day! Why don’t you put together a costume for yourself and do a post for us on Halloween? We would love it!!!!
You must have been a fun mother! All that decorating. Great job! I would love to have seen your house! I was right on both questions! 😊 You were a witch. 😊 What a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing it. 😊 Miss Pat, you are lovely with your glasses on, but when you took them off… You are a beautiful woman! Thank you for taking us into your home and visiting with us.
I love getting compliments. At my age we need them. Fun mother? No, just the average fussy mother. Kids never think Mom is funny. Mom is an embarrassment when you’re a teen.
Oh granny oat! You have really outdone yourself with this story. I was transported back in time! There is no way to explain the exhilaration of running through the streets knocking on doors for what seemed like hours and then going on the floor to dump out all the candy. I remember bobbing for apples which my mom did at a party in our house. Todays world is excessive and not nearly as exciting and fun in my opinion. I would have loved to have seen a picture of you in your witch costume. I hope you enjoyed your soup and got a wonderful nights sleep. ❤and 🤗
Hello Sweet GP! Yay...I am ready for a nighttime story. My mother had paper mache pumpkins and also, placed them in windows with lights. I bought two from ebay because my mom's were given to another family member. I use them now to decorate my dining table. Our Halloween nights in the 60's and 70's were identical to yours. We ran the neighborhood collecting candy until about 8 pm. No parents... just pure freedom. We got home and dumped all our candy out of our pillow cases on the floor. Trade time. Wonderful memories. Thank you for bringing it all back. ❤🐝
