What Happened To James Wiseman?

  • James Wiseman was the 2nd pick by the Golden State Warriors in 2020 but has failed to live up to his expectations. After three frustrating years for a contending team, James was traded to the Detroit Pistons. However, receiving more playing time did not suddenly make him a better player. He continues to struggle defensively, lacks screening and communication skills, and possesses a low basketball IQ. These crucial basketball features are simply lacking in James Wiseman's game. Overall, the situation is quite challenging for him.

    On the play at 1:38 , this is not Wiseman's fault, it's mainly Killian Hayes and a minor mistake by Jalen Duren.
    Wiseman helps off of Vucevic to guard Hayes' man (DeRozan) > Wiseman stops it, then gets back to his own man (Vucevic) > Hayes switches off of DeRozan for some reason and guards Duren's man instead of chasing his own guy down > Duren switches, but doesn't look to realize Wiseman is already covering Vucevic > Open DeRozan jumper.

    great, breakdown - wish more holdouts amongst Dubs fans would see this. Imho, it depends on how much losing the Pistons are wiling to accept.
    As you described, Wiseman is raw. There's also another factor - Wiseman believes he is a star and he's been unwilling to change his game to fill a complementary role (team defense, set good screens, roll hard with energy even if the ball doesn't come, etc...).
    He'll need two seasons of solid playtime while absolutely dragging his team toward the lotto before either 1) he''s right and he starts becoming a star, 2) he learns he isn't/his style isn't conducive to winning and humbles himself to become a role-playing big with good size. I hope the best for the kid. With his tools he "might" be a star that hasn't had the opportunity to realize his game. But to find out, his team will have to stare down a whole lot of losing across not just this season when his contract is up (QO: $16M) and next season before we find out. Could be a worthwhile gamble to continue dwelling in the lottery, but it was certainly not an onus the Warriors could bear any longer. Good luck

    I think the biggest issue is wisemen was drafted to high. There's just too much pressure and fear of being a bust is crippling. It's weird because the warriors just got chris paul and that would be one of the best things to happen to him. He's not a number one guy. He doesn't have drive and hunger to fix his problems. Even without playtime he should have got use to seeing HOW players work. How to be a professional how to watch tape. He had time to pick one of the two best defenders in the modern history of the NBA yeah. Your going to think I'm crazy saying this but gp2 is one of the best defenders in modern nba history and its a crime his career got so derailed by his height. the second one being draymond green. A lot of what he's doing is lack of basics. basics he was suppose to be working on. playtime or not he should "on paper" look good. he doesn't. He plays like a guy who didn't need to know the basics and expects to be doing whatever he wants and shocks he can't. That people are just as big and talent. That culture shock is what he got his first year and I'm not sure why he's still in this culture shock phase. The type of mistakes you want him to be making is a little too greedy a little too hungry and that isn't his mistakes. Now, it could be a "wiggins" where greed wasn't wiggins problem but coaching was. The problem is Wisemen had REALLY good coaching. He had good solid development even without major playtime mins. He just never applied it. Example the "Screening" action where he screens awful. That's a fixable thing, that's a little touch thing. That's something he could have worked on and been better at but he screens like he's going into a duffle bag and it's all for show and not an actual move. I get the feeling that wisemen doesn't care. And it shows.

    You were too polite to say this, but I think Wiseman missing defensive assignments is a low BBIQ issue and I'm not sure how fixable that is. When he understands what's going on he's a great defender, so he has athleticism in spades. Jokic is the opposite, low athleticism high BBIQ. (LeBron is of course high in both.) The NBA is a much more cerebral game than college basketball by a huge margin and it's evolving all the time, sometimes you're just not smart enough to keep up no matter how hard you study game film or whatever.

    • @DyersEve726
      @DyersEve726 Год назад

      Some things are simple though and not really BBIQ dependent. Like calling switch in the clip with Killian. Coaches just gotta drill the basics over and over. Get on his ass anytime he doesn't call a switch or when he stops playing before the play is over and loses his man. None of that takes understanding of the game really. Call switch. Play till you hear a whistle or someone makes a basket.

    • @Jhyphi
      @Jhyphi Год назад

      @@DyersEve726 Calling "switch" doesn't show up on Sportscenter. Wiseman plays as if he only cares about being on highlight clips and not actual winning. Two years ago, I followed Jared Goff to the Lions. I'm a big Jared Goff fan. The reception he got was insanely asinine. I went on Detroit media constantly defending him. The worst show was like this imbecile. Called Throw the Ball Jared, it purported to show cogent analysis of particular plays. Instead, it showed the host couldn't see the entire context, often missing how close and fast defensive linemen were on Jared. 6'5 guys are much closer to the QB than fans looking down on plays understand. I was beyond vindicated. Now, I'm a Lions fan, but I liked them right from the beginning. The coach impressed me, for one.
    James is different. Jared had a track record. But James reminds me of Robert Parrish, who the Warriors gave up on. How did RP turn out? The biggest issue is fouling. Big men often begin their careers constantly getting called for fouls. RP did. If they look a little gangly, it's worse. They become too focused on not fouling. It can take time to overcome this problem. I don't know if James can, but I see real potential that a good coach could develop. He's too focused on his movement. It's slowing him down. It's not instinctive. I like the Pistons. I think he did fine given the team play which was awful. So we will see. But please forget about the plus minus analysis. It's a statistical joke. Read up on it or take baby statistics to understand how ridiculous the grouping is. Use your eyes and brain.

    It doesn't happen very often, but one other massive bust at 2nd overall was Darko, who I legit believe could have been a great player if he had gotten drafted onto a trash team and given time to develop instead of riding the bench. He was 18, homesick, and an overnight millionaire with almost zero responsibility. Compare Darko and Wiseman that to Tim Duncan, who had just spent 4 years in college before getting drafted onto a contender. Dude was mature and developed enough to contender as a rookie.

    What a great breakdown. Never believed Wiseman was a good NBA player. Physically gifted and great high school player does not mean they can transition to the NBA, His basketball IQ is below average, horrible spacing and his biggest weakness is his constant BALL WATCHING!!! He is only able to play two on two or iso basketball.

    Curry Thompson Wiggins Draymond Looney
    To start of the 2nd unit Chris Paul has been legendary with elevating his bigs game and with guys that are athletic .. So Kuminga Duren Tracye Jackson Davis would benefit plus Moses GP & Brandin would be deadly

    1:43 wiseman played correctly he may not have communicated to the player in front of vuc to pick up the ball. He stayed low on the big to where if a shot is taken he can box out. Vuc is clearly in position to grab an offensive rebound, lob, all around second chance point if wiseman shoots out to the corner. That was the correct move maybe no communication to his teammate to pick up the wing as he is back in position to pick up the big

    4:01 to be fair that wasn't a bad pass more than a person with awful hands. Because they could have grab and went straight up with that if they could catch one handed. if you call for the pass like that super annoying be ready for the pass. He wasn't. That guy needs to get in the lab and work on catching 1 handed. Yes the pass could have been better but for a professional basketball player not in high school that was a ok pass.

      @cycleoflife565 Год назад

      The Dubs value experience and bball smarts in their rotation players. Wiseman is too inexperienced to have been able to succeed on the Warriors. Add in the fact that he missed valuable time with injuries and his developmental was compromised
      significantly. Keep in mind also that last season the team was in chaos due to Green assaulting Poole, effecting team chemistry a fan the culture that had existed before. Not ideal for molding young players.
