It's been nearly a decade since Rockstar's long-awaited GRAND THEFT AUTO V. How has the game changed over the years, and how, in its present state, does GTAV compare to prior entries? Let's find out, Boss!
*****
"Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) takes the franchise back to the city of Los Santos previously seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Unlike prior games in the series which focus on telling the story of a single player controlled character, GTA V features three central characters that the player is able to actively switch between at nearly any time during gameplay.
Rockstar Games states that this will be their largest open world game to date, boasting a total area greater than those of GTA: San Andreas, GTA IV, and Red Dead Redemption combined. At a preview event in Spring 2013, reps said that the map in GTA V will be "five times bigger than Red Dead Redemption".
A first for the franchise, players aren't restricted from certain areas in the game and can now explore the entire environment at their leisure.
At E3 2014, it was announced that Grand Theft Auto V would be coming to the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, and the PC. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions were released on November 18, 2014 with the PC version releasing on April 14 2015 after numerous delays."

There was a time where I think a lot of people made it cool to hate on GTA 5, but now that I'm an adult I find it amazing for its depiciton of the time.
GTAV’s greatest sin is being the latest GTA in a world where we haven’t gotten a new one in like 10 years
V is awesome, I’ve played all of them since downloading the pc original demo on a 56k modem - I get that people liked IV but to me it was in this halfway zone between what the series always felt like (fun and zany) and realism.
Yeah, lots of people shit on gta v because it was satirical and less serious. But the story was actually very good, and the characters were very well done, especially the 3 protagonists.
@@jarlboof Completely agree with you. All 3 characters in gta 5 are amazing and compelling.
I don't get why so many people like 4, though the missions feel so repetitive. Drive there, kill some goons, repeat.
And you don't have enough variety of weapon to make fun to play either.
Gta 4 has a lot of great stuff in there but it's not a fun game to play.
@@jarlboof damn right people hate on GTA because they think they are better hating a new game and having a classic GTA story is bad like GTA IV fans are weird lmao
@@jarlboof Trevor is cringe as fuck and Franklin is one-dimensional
@@jarlboof story was good up until the last tail, ending was still pretty satisfying tho
Honestly I wish your GTA content would get more love such as your MGS content, your Perspectives
on this are more interesting than the obvious observations that have been replicated a million times.
GTA 5 is such an undynamic world. Microcosm of this is that all npc drivers drive the same; all in perfect line, all stop equal distance apart, etc.. GTA 4 is much more dynamic.
This,
But GTA 5 is better because I can buy shark cards, right..? That's what Rockstar tells me.
Not this
There are so many dynamic NPC events in GTA V unlike GTA 4 lol and in GTA V you can actually hide from the police where as in GTA 4 anywhere in the grid vicinity you will still get found and killed
@@ahrlj24 You should probably actually try playing GTAIV lmao because none of this is true.
19 mins of this video is straight gta b roll with music.
I think no conversation about this game is completely without pointing out the dissonance in the (amazing) open world with the extremely restrictive on rails mission design where you hit a loading screen if you go around the block the wrong way. The design philosophy completely shifts gears when you're given a task and I find that extremely frustrating in all R* games. And while judging the single player and online modes separately is necessary, I think it's also important to point out how predatory the design of the online is. It's pretty muxh designed from the ground up to incentivize people to spend money on microtransactions. It's extremely problematic and it's important to bring this up when discussing the quality of the entire package of GTA 5.
Completely agree with this. The online portion of this game and it’s money gauging ways really compromise any good will the single player has imo. Let’s not forget when R* gave shark card discount with GTA game purchases to boost sales numbers… It has created a toxic community that is not accepting of new players and only rewards those who spend more money.
I stay away from the online in solo games
I also hate the design philosophy of modern online games.
I still really enjoyed the main story, the characters, the variety of missions you have etc.
The game is pretty restricting but it's so fun i can give it a pass.
For the predatory design of the online mode i completely agree with you. It's sad that it's what we expect from modern online games.
This is one of the reason i mainly old games.
The way they subtly zoom in the camera during funny moments is genius.
This video is to that one dude that said we never reached enough likes for the GTA V review video on the last video futurasound uploaded 😂❤️
Like all GTA's, GTA V was social commentary and story telling at it's finest. San Andreas and Vice City are kinda dated not only because of gfx but context - V is still relevant and probably will be for at least another 10 years which is the crazy thing about it. Though, in 10 years we may have photo realistic graphics that put GTA V to shame
THIS!
My favorite video game ever
I've played this game 3 or 4 times over the years and every time I do I'm blown away. It's like a good comedy movie or show that mannages to make you laugh again no matter how many times you've seen it
I feel the same way.
No matter how i play gta 5 i always have fun playing through the missions.
It's not something i can about 4 who's very repetitive and sometimes just not fun to play.
When I'll finish gta 4 i don't think i'll ever go back but you know damn i'll be back on gta 5 again.
Boss, I see you're further broadening your scope of content. Much obliged.
best of what i can say is that V is a very quiet game whose single player feels long since abandoned, something like san andreas and saints row 2 not only have better story lines but are just more fun to hang around in.
bro said gta san andreas has a better storyline lmao. only thing that piece of trash is better at it is spamming swear words and unfunny sex related jokes.
GTA Vs greatest stroke of genius was having Tangerine Dream do the soundtrack.
Had a killer soundtrack on that note just a shame the rest of the music if not most of it, especially on radio was pure shite.
@@mjag2834 Idk man I have pretty specific taste in music but I found plenty of good ones on the radio
The punk station had some classics like Black Flag and the Germs
the old school hip hop station was pretty good with the likes of Too $hort and N.W.A.
the funk station with War, Aaron Neville, and the Delfonics (and hosted by Pam Grier)
the country station that thankfully had only classic country like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings
the alt-rock station with Thee Oh Sees, FIDLAR, and Bass Drum of Death
I'm not into 80s pop/rock, edm, and most modern rap (aka just pop of the 2000s) so if you wanted that to be good then I dunno what to tell you
@@mysticwizard1943 FlyLo has a few great tracks like Windowlicker, Early Mountain, etc. also Jamiroquai on Non Stop Pop!
@@mjag2834 umm, no, the radio was pretty good too
As a base game, GTA 5 was fine on release. 8 years later, the game is a joke. There was so much more worth expanding on in the story mode. Perhaps they could have even added a number of “Episodes” DLC’s that would at least give more people a reason to fire the game up aside from playing online. Online gets old fast. Story mode was good, but there was a lot of meat left on the other side of the bone.
I'm loving the 80s synthewave soundtrack
Thank you for this! I would love to see you tackle the narrative, and gameplay themes of GTA as a series. Your analysis has been the voice I've been looking for on youtube as a medium in general. Anything you do I'm here for it. MGS has been this channels core but I really don't see things stopping there. MGS2 may be my favorite game ever made but objectively GTAV has to be the best game ever produced. Its time for a real retrospect of it and the big games rockstar needed to make in order to become components of this achievement of digital media.
GTA V best game ever? Are you on Crack? Never played The Last of Us? Half Life? Halo? Horizon: Zero Dawn?
Straight up if rockstar wasn't treating the game like how bethesda treats skyrim I think V would be thought of in a more positive light. Because on ps3 I thought on ps3 the games were amazing, now on ps5 I wonder what the hell they are doing just beating dead horses.
GTAO and its consequences have been a disaster for Rockstar's fanbase
You should keep making these type of videos as your insights on games/franchises not connected to metal gear are always interesting and entertaining.
This was an amazing review, played gta 5 after years and years of not playing it because of Xbox game pass and it was absolutely a completely different game than I remember
I did a SP playthrough 8 years since I last played on PS3, and man it was great, it really shows how empty and bland the MP portion of the game is and it's a shame Online "is" Gta V these days
GTA San Andreas still is the best for me, congratulations on the video.
I think that title goes to 4 or Vice City. I strongly disliked Vs ridiculously satirical world. It legit got stale.
Nearly 10 years and I still haven’t finished the campaign. I thought I would after playing through RDR2 twice but it actually made it harder. I still plan to finish it one day, one day. Great video!
Started 4-5- maybe even 6 times with the intent of beating it but never did. The game burns me out, everything and everyone is on the nose.
What do you mean? Your opinion seems interesting.
@@karlimo4034 (I had this whole thing typed out but it mostly came to this) The characters, story and gameplay I found more compelling than what is on offer from GTAV.
@@michiganjack1337 Literally most people said the opposite. GTA V they beat and RDR2 they didn’t
@@ahrlj24 I guess I'm not literally most people then.
I wish you had more videos delving into this misunderstood masterpiece. Replaying it on ps5 at 4k 60fps is a game changer the world still holds up so well and now that I am older I've come to notice and appreciate so many more subtle touches that iswoven into the characters and the world. The overarching themes are fascinating and force introspection. In my opinion the story doesn't get nowhere near enough love. Thanks for the great video you should definitely do some more!!
Love what you do with music in your vids! I adore the musical interludes without talking just as much as what you do have to say.
This might be a kind of "filler" video, but I really dislike the long spans of music, especially on a video about GTA. This game came out 8 years ago, and really the only thing it's still contributing to the gaming world is a plague of microtransactions. There isn't much more depth to GTA than we've already seen and known for the last 8 years, imo. I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts on this though :)
Even though the tone can be a lot lighter in this game generally, I really enjoyed the narrative GTAV engages you with over its dozens of hours. The psychoanalytical spin on REQUIRING you to participate in horrible acts then asking the character how they're feeling about it is brilliant. Outside of the online component the single player deserves a deeper look. You're playing as three deranged lunatics who repeatedly and narcissistically minimize and justify their actions over the pursuit of money. Is the player a participant by merely trying to finish the game, are they the audience, the culprit, or the enabler? Meta narratives play a huge role and it gets overlooked because of Take Two & Rockstar's ironically similar predatory business practices to please their stockholders. Even without digging deeper, there's a lot to dig into and I hope this was Jorin's first peek into some really intriguing territory.
@@rjgthuro excellent take on the campaign, I couldn't have said it better
I agree and disagree with you on some points, I agree with the microtransactions part, you are absolutely right, I've been playing the online mode with some friends and we were discussing how many parts of the core gameplay experience are taylormade to make the player buy the sharkcards or the microtransactions part. I agree with the statement "There isn't much more depth to GTA than we've already seen..." but I disagree on the part that implies that GTA V or any Rockstar games have any depth, bucause frankly, they don't have any. What makes Rockstar games famous and good are two aspects, the characters and the scope, the characters are interesting and charismatic but nothing complex like CPT Walker from Spec Ops The Line or James from Silent Hill 2 or even any of the Snakes or the antagonists from MGS franchise, and the scope refers to the sheer size of the world and how alive Rockstar manages to emulate on their games which makes the games a cool sandbox with a story mode, and that's it. Now do I think that it should be more than that? No, I don't. It works, it's fun and memorable and that's enough and I think that is the intended objective, and it's fine as it is.
u mad bro?
dumb take
I believe you misspelled the name of the video. It should be "San Andreas" :)
Vice city*
7:35 "lack of load time" wish that was true for online mode
I played the game when it originally came out in 2013 on the PS3. I thought the campaign was okay and I chose to save every character. I didn't bother replaying the story to see the other two endings, though.
happy to see you moving away from metal gear solid 5 mate, keep diversing your content and bring up discussions that people have long since forgotten and usually would type in the youtube search bar.
I don't mean to be a dick and criticize your videos, since you've been putting out good content at an incrediblee rate, but I think you could seriously trim down on those interim montages you've recently included in your videos. They eat up time and frankly, to me they become annoying because they interrupt what I'm here for (the actual critique/analysis).
I'd rather the video was shorter but more actual meat if you know what I mean, instead of having the montages. But that's just me.
I somewhat disagree with the whole "every inch is something to explore" mindset. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed GTA 5 a lot, but I felt like the map was too big, specifically when had to travel to and from the city to the desert in the north. Just long drives of empty space, getting bored from needing to drive from one side of the map to the other multiple times.
Once I completed the main story and the side missions, I had little desire to continue exploring. There were only a handful of buildings you could actually enter and they only way to make money post campaign was robbing by gas stations or finding armored trucks to to rob. All for a couple hundred bucks. The most expensive property was a golf course that costed $150,000,000 and the income generated from the other properties was too slow.
Every bit of additional content added by Rockstar was for the GTA online mode which had a terrible economy to encourage players to pay for micro transactions.
I completely agree with you. They should've added more stuff to the main story instead of focusing so much on the online.
The problem is that the online is what gave them the most money with the shitty microtransactions.
I still had fun driving through the game though especially with a motorcycle because you can go around the main road. But it did feel too empty and not enough buildings to enter.
Do you have this issue with San Andreas as well?
@@RobertEdwinHouse9 I unfortunately can't make an opinion on the San Andreas game, because I never played it. It came out when I was young and my parents were trying to limit my exposer to things they deemed 'unchristian.' My first ever GTA was GTA 4 and I disliked the clunky controls and repeated bowling requests so much, that it turned me off the series. I only got GTA 5, because it had heists lol. The controls were better and the characters were interesting to me, but I just never had the desire to play San Andreas.
@@BillORileyCyrus if you liked gta 5 you would probably like San Andreas
It's way better than 4
Finally somebody gets it. Just because an open world is massive it doesn't make it good because when it comes down to it GTA 5 map is mostly shallow in the story mode with hardly anything to do (pretty much zero enterable building and activities) once you've completed the story. The things you can do are completely meaningless and are just a waste of time.
This video came out just when I reinstalled GTA V and started playing it again after buying it and not touching it due to its install size. Coincidence?
GTA 5 is the most overhated GTA by far.
Its narrative doesn’t need to be a depressing story like in GTA 4 because it is a different game with a different tone, and in that regard, it does really well exposing the reality of the American dream and how it is so bad to live with. In GTA 4, they spoke about immigrants wishing for the American Dream and what people do to get it, but here, they show the reality of America as an American citizen.
I like the 3 different motives of the characters and how they’re all unique. Franklin just wants to get out of the slums and be successful. Trevor is a wild outcast who is looking for his old friend and Micheal is a retired family man living in peace yet a broken family.
The gameplay in the game is a perfect mix of realism and arcade for me. I love it.
its better than IV for me because of how fun AND detailed it is compared to IV
@@YunethAlwis Yeah I feel like GTA IV is pretty overrated. Especially when I replayed it not to long ago.
@@randomserbianguy5677 Exactly, I also played it recently and it was super overrated.
There was a comment I saw a few years that said this about IV and V.

GTA V - The american dream is a joke.
I'm a GTA IV fan, and I never wanted a depressing story out of GTA V, I wanted a good written one.
Neither mistake nor masterpiece. A product.
IV is still my favorite so far. I'm hoping GTA 6 will re-inspire me to get back into GTA again.
According to latest T2 investors conference call they are focusing on maximizing monetization opportunities for online component of gta6 and single player portion as a minimum portion of development. So if you like gta5 online you will like gta6 online just get your wallet ready. If your into single player experience well there is no money in it according to T2.

While it is fun, I can't help but like SA & 4 more. Of course with a mod to fix the driving in 4...5 could have used more mainline missions in general, but especially for everyone who isn't Michael. Not expanding on Grove Street from SA is maybe it's biggest flaw.
Why would they expand on Grove Street when the main character arc of Franklin is that he wants to be something better and more successful than regular gangbanger that gets shot for a petty liquor store robbery?
lmao the driving in 4 never needed fixing.

Exemplary soundtrack on this video. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
For me, V is just so dull. Trevor is the only protagonist who feels real, Franklin and Michael both feel way too forced.
The story is boring, too short and difficult to believe but the biggest letdown is the world. It doesn’t feel lived in, whereas GTA IV’s Liberty does. There are so few building interiors (lots of apartment blocks have interiors with people hanging out in IV), and far fewer restaurants for the player to visit. It’s all there for show, and not a metaphor for LA. Bigger doesn’t equal better.
What do you mean “Trevor is the only one who feels real”? Franklin resonates with a lot of people because he wants to become someone big and get out of the hood, but his friends keep pushing him down. Micheal is a retired business man who is trying to live a peaceful life but has family issues.
“The story is too short”? It’s an average 10-15 hours of really good pacing.
For the open world, I kinda agree.
I came here for your metal gear content but I’ll take a video on anything you want

I really enjoy your videomaking style and I really think you would enjoy it and really add some new interesting thoughts and angels of analysis. Again a ridiculous request I'm well aware! just something to think about and obviously this is another fantastic video as well.

I agree. I'm big fan of San Andreas, but i can't deny this.
I guess you could say it's biggest legacy, is, "THE MEMES." - Raiden.
I for one thought your b roll footage was dank
My new theory surrounding gta as a whole is that they pushed back the release of the update for new consoles in order to allow breathing room for the sales of gta remastered in order to gauge public reception . I’m also not a huge fan of gta 4 . I thought I was the only one . I mean I like the euphoria engine… to an extent. And that’s it. Idk why but the world just felt boring it was hard to remain interested.
Now that you mention it maybe the realism is what makes it so much harder for me to get into them now. There is a lack of gratification and awe and and cleverness everything is kinda always in your face nothing is evvvver subtle in gta actually surprised you didn’t wait to do this with the new enhanced version also

I bet you GTA 6 will have the most charming and intriguing type of protagonist in all of GTA. The story will be personal and over the top at the same time.
Hyped for a finale that never came. Maybe a woke ending with the audience discovering Franklin is an undercover LS Cop, after a heart to heart with Lamar and an ensuing shoot out Franklin vows for revenge after killing his best friend and Chamberlain Family Gang members. Franklin then hunts down Brad who has returned from a Mental Institute, put there by Brads wealthy family, Brad now runs Solomon Richards Studios in Vinewood. Trevor runs all the nightclubs and deals drugs through Bouncers and Doormen in San Fierro, we find that Trevor is the son of current President Donald Love and a porn star named Candy Suxxx (who herself is now dead) and Michael is a Mafioso Boss who decided to corrupt the FiB and IAA and went 'undercover' himself to find out relevent information on the Government. Michael now owns many casinos in Las Venturas. But the finale never came...and neither did a sequel or prequel.
@@mjag2834 what ?
@@mjag2834 All that is too much. Too many plot lines that will need closure. Franklin being uncover could have worked if that was the reason his aunt was always so harsh on him and Lamar always claiming Franklin don’t be puttin in work. Lamar being in danger by Strech was a reasonable reason to have his old crew taken out for Lamar’s protection as a cop.
Michael working with the feds is just nonsensical. The movie route suited him better. He was never in witness protection. Dave doesn’t hold strings like that to make him just be APART of it on file with a recommendation. Devin was his main problem besides family (Trevor too to an extent but what do you expect). The real climax would be Michael Nd Trevor shooting each other. Option B. Killing Trevor still leaves Devin alive, which doesn’t solve much for his movie business. Maybe if Solomon was a snake Nd Michael “cleaned” the studios from the inside to make “great” movies again. Then yeah I see it coming full circle.
Trevor had too many enemies to count, Michael (apologized), O’Neal’s(Dead), The Chinese(Dead), The Lost(Dead), Devin Westin (Dead), FIB (Can’t die but Steve can), The Mexicans(Martin calls truce) and Merry-weather (Can’t die but are taken as jokes). Literally the world is against him cause his ventures of business is so out there it conflicts with everyone. Him gaining the strip club makes sense for the dude. That’s like the biggest front you can use for smuggling and other stuff. If he were to own all across Los Santos… he would not only steal money from his opps but he will earn money from their lust. It was a genius play if you ask me, he also has Ron enterprise. TPI is still booming. The score helped his quest for a chase or thrill. His story arc is complete.
Franklin is the only incomplete character arc I see really.
