When my sister had a baby, she was also taking care of my cat. My cat can be feisty sometimes, and spontaneously scratch or give a little bite if she has a mood. So my sister was very worried about the baby. Turns out, my cat recognized the baby as special, and would let the baby literally tear out her fur without even lifting a paw. One time my sister was doing laundry, when my cat started circling her feet and meowing loudly. Turns out the baby had started crying and my sister couldn’t hear it, so my cat went and got her attention. Now there’s a second baby, and she’s just as gentle with them both. :)
yeah, you can see sit in many animals, they know when something is weak and developing. they know restraint, I feel like we should make them more accountable and put them higher, animals are not stupid.
I think it’s so sad when people just get rid of their animals when kids come along. Unless there is a real danger ie dog actually attempts or shows aggression to child. Owning an animal is a responsibility you take on and shouldn’t just abandon when a new thing comes along. Sure it’s not convenient to change things or do something extra but far to many people take getting rid of their pet too lightly.
My cat was scared or avoidant of my little sister lol. She just never went near her after smelling her when she first came into the house. And she still avoids her 5 five years later
Yep, my parents had a cat when they had my oldest sibling and my sister would tug on his tail and ears and grab it, but the cat just sat through it because it knew the baby was just a baby
What they meant was darkness no human could see through obviously not with zero light. I think they took many questions way too literally and didn't consider the colloquial version.
prophetofdoom I think it was the phrasing of the question. _Complete_ darkness means _complete_ darkness. They could’ve given more information, though. I agree with you on that.
When my son was born, my long-haired black cat was obsessed with him. A few people tried to tell me the cat was jealous, but I'll never believe it. He wanted to be near him constantly, like my son was HIS kitten. We even ended up referring to our baby as "the kitten" because it was so funny. He just adored my son as they grew up together.
I have a 6 month old girl and adopted a rescue cat a month ago - same thing, he has always been curious about our baby girl and when we let him near, he literally just lies down beside her in bed. When she reaches out for him, he makes sure his head or paw is always within reach, and is always super relaxed around her.
It's because infants exhibit the similar kind of scent profile their baby's do which helps to protect the child like a safety mechanism from being eaten, many type of animals behave in this fashion.
The stigma around black cats really breaks my heart. I have a beautiful black cat named T'challa, and he's the sweetest, stupidest cat I've ever met, and I would do anything for him.
I've only ever had black cats and would never get any other color. So much potential for names! My 2 sweethearts are called Black Jack (short Blacky) and Loki (as in the God of mischief, which fits him very well)
I actually adopted my black cat, Poe, at a half price. The adoption center offered all black cats at a reduced price to incentivize people to adopt them. This was all fine by me, I got a great, confident, and loving cat at a lower cost! He’s my bargain bin cat
More often than not, if a cat it laying in your lap purring, it's because they are comfortable and enjoying time together. It's really all about context
serious question: why do u think they purr while i'm abt to give them food? just bc they're hungry? or bc they're happy abt me giving them food?? sometimes when they want my attention to give them food so i haven't yet reached for the food...they're still 'convincing' me
@@lucreziapaoli51 Can't be 100% sure, but personally I think it's because they're excited and happy they're about to get food. My cat does the same thing, they will start purring and rubbing on me like crazy and I think they're trying to tell me "I'm so happy right now, you should give me food!" Or something like that lol.
@Julie Englefaris yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head. Just as mother cats pur at kittens though, I think they *sometimes* pur trying to comfort others as well.. but yeah. I think it's mostly self-soothing too.
There is some truth to it tho. It all depends on socialization while a kitten, my older cat used to play tag with my dogs, my younger one was adopted a bit too late(note: he was adopted by the older one before than any human) is *very* afraid of dogs
@@kyallokytty This. And their body language can cause confusion. For example some dogs may wag their tale, "stare" at the playmate and bow to them which is really odd for many cats because they might think that the dog is threatening them. Or dogs' prey drive might kick in when cat runs. But sometimes they learn to read each others and get along well.
"another person could probably fill in that job" explain this to our cat who gets depressed when mom is in hospital despite having all the food, comfort, attention as she used to have with mom and more.
So the idea that cats love milk came from the same place as the myth that rabbits love carrots: television. In reality, milk and carrots are dangerous for the respective animals. How sad.
@@AngelSnowflakes Bugs Bunny's carrot chomping is based on a scene from an old Clark Gable film where his character eats a carrot. Unfortunately at some point people forgot that it was a movie reference and started thinking it was a thing rabbits actually did.
Cats do love milk though. Just because milk isn’t good for them doesn’t mean they can’t be attracted to the taste/smell. Every time I eat a bowl of cereal my cat won’t leave me alone, then he goes out of his way to try to lick the bowl when I’m done.
street dogs nd cats do not go along... some of the dogs literally killed my cats nd some of the neighbouring cats too...so don't trust ur cat with any unknown dog
Cats are smart animals and I’m pretty sure a cat can distinguish on what a cat and a human is. Which comes to the point of cats not seeing us as parents but as more of a caretakers. They had seen their siblings and mother before because when kittens are born (not sure how long) they stay with their mother for a certain period and siblings for variety of reasons and than get adopted unless they are street cats but with your cat, maybe your cat seems to like you very much because of whatever you did or do with him. Your cat just form a bond with you
"and comfort" you probably pet them and love on them a lot, which is why they formed an attachment to you. You give them scritches, of course they're gonna like you!!
My cat literally had a fever because I wasn’t home and my mom was home with him. He didn’t have anything wrong, when I got back he got better almost instantly
The biggest one: “Cats are moody and unpredictable”. Some cats can be moody, yes, but it is often very easy to understand their body language, and be able to tell if they’re getting annoyed with you. Understanding boundaries and body language is one of the biggest ways to build a positive bond with a cat (saying this as someone with 2 silly, crazy cats). They’ll be more inclined to be affectionate with you if you understand what they’re telling you.
@@tearoses9940 Yup. Teens and children be like, "oH wELl A CAt ScrAtCHed mE onCe" Once? Like, oh my god, you were obviously scaring the poor thing or they sensed you as a threat. But one time? They're clearly bitching about it.. I seriously don't mind dogs, but they can be too hyper most of the time.
Purring releases endorphins! So cats might purr when they’re stressed or in pain to calm themselves! Cats on average sleep 11-17 hours a day (23 is an exaggeration) Babies can be scary, they can tug on tails, they scream, they have no boundaries. It’s important with both cats and dogs to teach your kids how to interact with them. Cats and dogs don’t hate children but may be afraid of them and that’s when accidents happen From a vet tech working an a small animal GP clinic
Also both pets could potentially hurt babies or children for their sake of protection. When they get scared, they may run away or attack on sight. It's important to keep them away if they haven't got a solid relationship with eachother.
Like the other comments said, you're more helpful than the 2 vets in the video. ;) I worked as an assistant at an animal ER for awhile, loved that job, but it did have a lot of very sad moments. But the good far outweighed the bad. Don't work there anymore, but still use the knowledge I gained there because hubby and I rescue kitties/cats now.
my cat was basically my father when i was born haha, he imprinted on me from the day i was born, when i was brought home he saw me and instantly loved me. whenever anyone, even my mom, got near me he’d nip at the feet to say “put her down” but never enough that i’d be hurt, and he’d always let my hold him, even in times if basically be hurting him, he was just calm and letting me, he was always by my side, i remember when i was sick, my cat would sit right next to me and stay there, he wouldn’t even get up to eat, not until i was well enough to get up. he saved my life when a rabid fox tried to attack me, he fought him off, but in the end was infected, he passed away due to rabies, but as a hero. i’m his last moments, he knew how much i loved him and how much i knew he loved me, that cat was my best friend and i will never forget him. he’s always in my hear, my Kitty Kitty :)
@may0 the person talked about how much they and their cat loved each other and the things the cat did for them, and how the cat protected them from a fox but died because of it, and you’re just saying “lmao”?
"The typical cat sleeps about 23 hours a day" Yeah, no... Maybe they do when they are stuck inside a laboratory with nothing else to do to pass the time, but every cat i've owned or got to be around for an extensive amount of time were awake for waaaay more than an hour and even during the middle of the day. They sleep a lot, yes, but if we say the average sleeps around 16-18 we are still being generous
Yeah they were sorta wrong there, I think they were taking from larger cats. Some large cats will sleep for up to 23hrs a day, but yeah, i think that was a speaking mistake. Your domestic cat should be sleeping for about 15-18hrs, in short naps roughly 50-110 minutes at a time, with a larger rest period after dusk
I thought the same thing. Yes my kitten will nap during the day, and certainly sleeps a full 8 hours at night. But most of the time he wants to just play all day. He does wake up around sunrise though and then proceeds to wake me up to demand cuddles and kisses.
I've also heard that cats purr if they're in pain, the vibration soothes the pain I suppose, it's sad when you think about it cause you could just think they're fine😔
it's partly a comfort response in that case. I don't know if the vibration soothes pain, but I have heard of some studies that the vibration may help with healing!
I assume you'd want to look at other behavior to help narrow it down. I think the big takeaway for that myth is that cats purr for different reasons, not JUST because they're content.
@@cassiesevigny My cat sometimes lays on my stomach or back when I have cramps and purrs. I can definetly tell you, it helps a lot! Bot only with the pain but also with emotional stress, it's so soothing :3
I once had a cat who would willingly go swimming in our pool. We freaked out the first time she did it, but she kept going into the pool and doing a little paddle all over. She was the best. I miss you, precious baby Flower!
She forgot the considerable time cats spend licking themselves each day. I have heard that cats spend 16 or 17 hours a day sleeping. 23 seems too high.
The "mother" myth: okay, they don't see us as their parents. But studies do show that we're not just their food place. They are showing that cats actually live something close to the theory of attachment that humans know. So... they get very attached to us. It's not just about being "their safe place to get comfort and eat". They have a real connection to their humans.
Yeah, when I moved out, my mum told me our cat was sitting next to my place on the sofa for a couple of weeks, and then spend more time outside. When I came back for some weeks she emediatly started laying next to me on the sofa again, spending the evenings inside. But cats have different personalities, some are more independet, some realy clingy and attached to their humans. I wouldn't say they think of you as their parent, more like a member of the pack.
yeah, my granddad used to have an old cat. when he died of a heart attack, the cat refused to eat or drink anything by her own and would stay all day in the chair where my granddad used to sit all day. Even if my grandma forced her to eat she would refuse. She died a few weeks later of sadness, in my granddad chair I don't think she only saw my granddad as a caregiver, or that anyone could be able to fill his spot. If that were true, she would have let my grandma fill his spot
Yes and no. Cats do show kind of the same bevahior that human toddlers do when it comes to attachment. It can be assumed that cats and small children exhibit the same attachment styles. But the truth is that toddlers (during their first years of life) also basically are only attached to their caregivers because they get food, safety and comfort from them. So it could be argued that cats do kind of see us as parents, but more like in the eyes of a toddler for whom affection is mostely an appreciation of the care that is given to him or her.
@@jm.ggonzalez2306 I've heard other peoples stories of cats dying of sadness when their owner dies. I just read a study that found some cats attach to their humans stronger than dogs do.
@@09Bestfriend I agree that for a lot of cats it could be that way but I've heard way to many stories of cats mourning their humans to believe its just an appreciation. My first cat would only be seen by my family if I was around. He would come out 5 minutes before I was due home from school and wait for me by the door. If I went out of town he would refuse to eat the entire time until I came home...one time I was gone for 5 days and my brother called freaking out because he could not get KT to eat. I came home the next day...KT yelled at me for 5 minutes when I came through the door and when I fed him he ate. I never went on another trip without taking him with. Just like people, I don't think all cats feel the same way.
I had someone explain it as “your cat thinks of you as an adoptive mother. They know you didn’t give birth to them, but they see you as their caretaker and love you that way”.
@Doppelganger D cats 100% can tell the difference between male and female humans. If a cat has had a traumatic experience with a female or a male human in the past, it can become weary of the respective gender of human later in it's life.
@Doppelganger D cat's don't really have a "leader" though. They all have their own boundaries and territories. It's true that they may see you as someone "above" them in the cat hierarchy, but it doesn't really mean you're their leader.
@Doppelganger D mmm... cats can smell our hormones. Males and females have differing hormones. They may not think in their head "that is a male" but they can 100% tell the difference.
@@nitrogenbubbles4555 Hormones don't have odor. They can affect your body odor, but not in a way that is unique to biological males/females on an everyday basis. (You may release some more unique scents while aroused, for example, but I'd expect most people will not normally be aroused when hanging out with cats). If men and women smell uniquely seperate to your cat, that's far more likely due to differences in perfumed products men and women typically purchase. These products are designed to have lasting odor and neutralize natural body odors that your hormones could affect. Individual people do have unique smells though, so if you aren't regularly perfumed (and deodorant obviously counts here) than your cat is likely observant enough to recognize you by your smell alone. But that's a "you" smell, not a "male/female" smell.
I'm not a veterinarian like these ladies, but I have worked as a veterinary assistant, and cats are one of my special interests. While every cat I've known has slept quite a bit, I am quite positive it's more like 16-18 hours a day, not 23. Otherwise, this is a great informative video for the average person! 👍
Cats hate water Actually tigers and jaguars are at home in the water and actually really good swimmers. Fishing cats as the name implies know how to fish really well and don't mind the water at all.
About the milk stuff: cats not being able to digest milk does not debunk “cat s love milk”. It just means cats like something harmful to them. Like cigars for us lol.

“Cats are supposed to be most active during dusk and dawn.” Then there’s my cat that does zoomies at _anytime_ of the day _besides_ the hours of 11pm and 7am) 🤷🏻♀️
They typically normally hunt at dusk and dawn in the wild but can do it anytime possibility arises. They play, groom, explore and ask for food anytime they feel like it. Also, dusk and dawn are at least somewhat light-based. With artificial light cats may get confused somewhat so they sometimes start pouncing a short while after light gets turned off.
"Another person can fill this gap for your cat easily" WRONG I tried it with my sister the cat I was taking care of didn't want to be anywhere other than where I am at, or eat or sleep, when I went to sleep and closed my room door he kept crying till I opened the door and he instantly made LOUD purrs and rubs and he is stray. cats bond with ppl, yea sure they don't think you r their mother, but they don't replace ppl THAT easily at least to my exp, I have been feeding and taking care of stray cats in my area for years.
Agreed. Some of the cats i've had would have been at ease with someone else, and some of them just are not - when I have to leave them with a catsitter they hide the entire week.
Absolutely, my sister never got along with any of my cats, and my cats would cuddle with me or my mom and very rarely with anyone else. My cats always felt safer with me
You can fill in the gap as a source of food, but the cat won't trust a stranger after one feeding unless it's used to getting food from multiple different people. I've fed some people's cats that I only knew the cat was there because the food would keep disappearing between feedings and I've fed some cats that were all up in my face while I was filling their bowls. It depends on the personality, but cats can get used to new caregivers over time.
My black cat Binx is literally the worlds biggest doofus and often sits with a little blep. I’d love to have like 4 identical black cats roaming around just like him.
"The typical cat sleeps 23 hours a day." Yeah, no. I have 4 cats and NONE of them sleep anywhere near that long. Yes, they sleep a lot. But not THAT much.
Yeah, I have never seen a cat that sleeps that much. Everyone I know has a cat, I have 2! They are pretty active, play all day long. I think it is more like “sleeps an hour, play an hour, sleeps again, then play”
Cats, although smart, aren’t smart enough to know the difference between someone who does that and a mother, so yes cats do view their owners as their “mother”, just in a way different than they naturally would.
Sure but what constitute a mother is all that and more. Simply saying their your "source" of something is highly reductive and even demeaning in a lot of cultures.

She takes naps until 9:00 PM, I play with her some more for about an hour and then we go to sleep until 5:00 AM. Watching this I thought "is my cat not sleeping enough!?"
Being roughly equivalent to something we might consider as being motherly, is not the same as a cat thinking "ah yes, you are a giant cat who birthed me"
@@Uncivilcivilservice true, but when an owner says "oh she/he thinks I'm it's mother" they don't mean that their cat thinks they actually gave birth to it, but that they see them as their main caretaker/favourite human. When I was in nursing school a few years ago, my program recommended getting rid of the cat and I was shocked, being a cat owner myself. There is alot of misunderstanding on that issue. I would advise regarding the litter box and having someone else clean it -- switch to pine litter. The cat will adjust but the advantages of pine litter are -- a whole lot less tracking and dust. The difference is amazing and it's probably good to do for anyone who also has asthma or lung issues plus bonus -- many of the commercial litters contain chemicals and perfumes and the FDA really doesn't regular pet products made overseas, where alot of this stuff is made. Look for pine litter that is chemical/perfume free and just clean their box twice a day or more depending on how many cats one has.
Our dog Freckles was 10 when we brought our cat Snowball(then only a few months old) home from the pet store. While it took a few days for them to get used to each other since Freckles got scratched by a cat when he was younger they quickly took to each other. They'd often run around the house and Snowball even respected Freckles as he'd stop doing something he wasn't supposed to when Freckles got after him about it like when he would bat around the ornaments on the Christmas Tree. When Freckles got really old(we finally had to put him down at 17)and he wasn't able to move much Snowball would lay down beside him and would try to get him to play. Sometime after Freckles passed we had a picture of him sitting on a bottom shelf and Snowball stared at it for the longest time. So yes, cats and dogs can get along and even love each other. Furry animals hate it most! Unless they have a special oil layer to keep their skin dry (otters, polar bears, tigers, labrador retrievers, Turkish water cats, etc) the water really weighs them down and takes a long time to dry. Sometimes it can even cause mold to grow in their fur
"When the cat is unkempt, they perhaps do like water" But they don't know water is going to clean them up do they? Then why would they like it when they're dirty?
Some cats love water, some detest it. I suppose it’s a sensory thing, I love swimming but some people hate the whole getting a wet and dry process. Can’t imagine how annoying that would be getting all the fur wet and heavy. Like my rabbit hates wet grass- wet paws are the worst apparently.

In theory cats can survive on vegan cat food with vitamin supplements but this may be quite unpleasant and not very healthy for cats. We are omnivores, but they are (obligate) carnivores - in the wild they die unless they eat meat (which means killing wildlife), people who want to have a cat need to understand that.
To be fair, dry cat food is not exactly meat (but it may contain non-vegan products). Good-quality cat food does contain everything cats require - they are generally better off eating good-quality dry food than dubious-quality meat even if they prefer the latter. Furthermore, feral cats eat not just meat but sometimes other parts of their prey, so feeding them just beef may not be enough (please ask your vet). Most important part - unlike almost any other animal/pet cats absolutely have to consume taurine regularly - this is a leading problem with vegans AFAIK. Without that cats become sick, blind and then die. Natural meat and cat food contains that, but not other food - e.g. plants, dog food, "vegan meat substitutes", some processed products.

Aye. Likewise, when we say cats see us as their "mother", we do not mean the cat thinks we birthed them, but that we are a food provider, a source of of protection, a source of comfort, etc. And to a cat? Pretty sure that equals "mom". XD
My cat was terrible. I actually think he had retained some lactose tolerance from being a kitten and damn well knew it. You couldn't leave any bowls of icecream or milk from your cereal out because he would sneak up and help himself. And you'd be like "no stop it. You shouldn't have cows milk man" and he'd be like " I don't care. It's good man. I can take it" and sneak back up on the table as soon as you looked away for another couple licks. Then again this cat would help himself to your kebab meat, and almost climb up your leg for some raw chicken scraps. He had a pretty iron stomach for virtually all of his life. Not a pedigree softie that's for sure. I would say the sneaky meat treats he'd wrangle of us is what probably helped him live to 19 years.

"Cats see you as a source of food". It's definitely not just about food, and I'm shocked these women don't know this as vets. Cats actually love you _so much_ that they don't want to share you with anyone else! They are very territorial, and when you develop a bond with your cat, you become a part of that territory because they want everyone in the world to know that you are _theirs_ - hence why they bump their head on you to release scent glands on your clothes, on things you own, and on items of furniture as a way of telling other animals "back off, this human is mine and if you hurt them, I'll hurt you!" If they didn't trust you, they definitely _would not_ allow you to pet them or expose their bellies to you, since both of those positions would leave them vulnerable to other predators in the wild. They will get separation anxiety when you are gone for prolonged periods of time and are just as excited to see their owners as dogs; every time I walk back into my front door, my cat is already waiting for me and will run down the steps just to greet me with her tail high in the air. The only difference between cats and dogs is that cats like to be petted on their own terms because they are naturally independent in the wild, whereas dogs will let you pet them almost anytime you want because they consider you to be their pack leader.

"Cats sleep for 23 hours a day." Yeah, that's wrong. These gals, while knowledgeable, are not behavioral specialists. They certainly didn't refer to themselves as such. If you have questions about cat behavior, the best people to ask are shelter operators, foster homes, etc. People who spend most of their time around the same cats and many cats will have a better idea of cat behavior.

I knew about the milk thing, even the special cat milk part, because I had an older cat and as he got older (he was 18 years old) he wouldn't eat as much as he needed to in order to stay healthy. So we switched him over to wet food that we then used a blender to mix (blend) together with the cat milk to make his food go down easier/quicker. This meant that he'd have more nutrients in a smaller amount of food, and he was also more likely to eat more food because it was easier for him to eat. It was kinda a gross consistency and got bad (dried up, etc.) really quickly though, so we did this a few times a day and then left his dry food in his bowl for him to eat in between meals - which he rarely did but it was even better if he was able to do both. Like I said, he was a really old cat and he had feline ocular herpes so he was also fully blind in one eye and partially blind in another. He had a very long life, but by the end it was clearly his time to go. But that cat milk was really helpful in those last few months to keep our cat as healthy and happy as possible. And if you were wondering we did get a smaller blender that we used specifically for his food, mainly because he didn't eat much and our big blender wouldn't have worked very well for getting that small amount of food blended properly. We usually fed it to him in a syringe-type thing (the kind vets use to give animals medicine), and he kinda drank it like a hamster drinks from its water bottle thing. In other words, we didn't force it down his throat, but he'd get himself dirty if we had him lick it from a bowl because he was mostly blind and very not graceful. He never was graceful, btw. That was a his personality thing, not anything related to his health. We loved him and miss him so much, but yeah that cat milk was a god send.
"'Myth: Cats think their owners are their mothers' I think that they just see you as a source of food, and comfort, and cleanliness, and a safe place to live." So, a mom. Edit: quote accuracy
House cats can in fact view caregivers to be parent-like. They do understand - to a point - that humans are different from cats, but they can include humans in their "cat" social structures. They know their birth mother by smell - each cat and human has distinct individual smell.
I agree! But cats are smart animals and I’m pretty sure a cat can distinguish on what a cat and a human is. Which comes to the point of cats not seeing us as parents but as more of a caretakers. ᵗʰᵉNight★Star I think you need to reread my comment. I was focusing on the way they talked about it. As in the language they used. They obviously know what they’re talking about and they explained that there are other reasons for purring. What I meant is the way they said purring = happiness is a myth because technically that’s wrong.......you sound very upset
"Cats think you're their mother" Them: they think that your they're caretaker and could do fine with someone else other than you Guys, that's a *HUGE* lie! Sure, it may be the case for some cats, but a lot of cats aren't actually like that! Did you know you can form a pair bond with your cat? That means that u have a very special relationship. My mom's cat had stomach problems, and right when he was about to die, he came to my mom, curling himself in her arms, looked at her one last time, and passed away. That cat was very attached to my mother. And also, if you have that pair bond, or any other kind of strong connection, if you've been together for years, and let's say you die, that cat could die of a broken heart. Same goes for cats don't like babies. It's more like animals In general know who is defenseless and whose not. When my mom got her cat, which we still have now, as soon as we got him, he ran and hid, and he didn't let my mom pet him, but he let me and I was about 3. So guys, pick the right cat, animal, whatever, and be happy and love them until their last breath.
I completely agree. When my cat was ill not long before he died he would get into my bed under the covers and lie against me with his head on the pillow. If I went away on a school trip but the rest of my family were home he stayed up all night crying for me. There’s no love like this so they’re completely wrong.
@@alexandraturner5795 Awww, I'm sorry! Mimi, Sid, Willybean, and Kody. Willybean was half dead, and my mom saved him, Kody we gave away cause we couldn't haddle too many cats, so we gave him to our friends, but he sadly got ran over. And Sid was mine, and Mimi was my sisters. Sid would sleep on my, on my head, would play with me, and it made me so happy. So happy I wish I could go back to that time, but, we would let him and Mimi outside cause the sprayed, and somehow the got out. We had a brick wall all around our house, and a gate, so We think they went under the gate. But, at dinner, we had a window in the dining room, and I saw Mimi and Sid outside. Sid looked at me, and I looked back at him, and he ran away down the street. Now, I was 5, and it hurt so bad. So so bad. I had a stuffed cat, and named him sid, and to help cope with my sadness, I would dance with him, sleep with him, do everything with him. But now I have Willybean and he means so much more to me than anyone else. So I was very hurt when they said, "cats think your their caretaker and could do fine without u"
House cats in fact do tend to view their caretaker humans as parently "cat" figures. They however do not confuse them with their actual mother (by smell). It is theorized they gained this trait through domestication. But each cat is different and views humans differently. Some are mostly indifferent, some grow really attached. They often include caretakers in their social cat-hierarchy. If a cat brought you a dead bird/mouse/food they probably do view you as sort-of parent-cat.
@@jwhite5008 My cat I have now wasn't breathing when he was born, so my mom breathed in his nose and the first scent he smelled was my mom's. @@Timeward76 it really depends on the tine of day and the weather. Cats are more active at dusk and dawn, so they will sleep on average 15 hours during the day. Some cats will take a catnap, which is usually they go into a light sleep so they can spring up at a moments notice to escape from predators. They are also hardwired to conserve energy, which is why some active cats will sleep to 15-20 hours. However, if your cat is doing nothing BUT sleeping that is not very healthy.
"Cats are active at 4AM because they're most active in the morning and are hungry" Can confirm my cat will start messing with things in my room until I get annoyed and get up. Sometimes it's like I'm the pet being trained to do a trick lol.
"Cats think their owner is their mother" Whilst this two are highly specialized vets, they are not cat behaviourists ... Yes, cats _can_ treat their owners as their mother, for one simple reason: they meow. Cats hardly ever meow at each other, except when a mother cat meows at their kittens, and vice-verse. In fact, kittens meow at their mother not just when hungry, but when nervous, anxious, or just want to know where they are. But adult cats hardly ever meow at each other. Hence, most cat behaviourists think the reaon why cats meow at their human guardians is because, as we are the ones that feed them, they meow at us in anticipation of either gaining attention, but especially in anticipation of being fed.
All of this. There is also a myth that cats "only" meow at humans, which is inherently false. I've been a feral cat caregiver and rescuer for a decade now and have the pleasure of viewing cats, WILD cats essentially, meowing quite extensively at not just their young/parents, but at the others in their familial group. A meow is not as common as a coo, or the trill, but it's still definitely used in feline to feline communication.
sometimes if my kitten (4 months) wont respond to her name I'll do a purr meow to mimick a mom cat and she will come running...every time. it's the cutest thing

6:25 my family used to live in a 4 story apartment and my cat would always sit on the fence where the balcony is. One day she just decided to jump off. So when we found her under a tree when we were searching for her, she was fine, only a small scratch on her nose that could heal by itself. Of course we still went to the vet to get her checked but she was fine. She might’ve landed into the bush because she wasn’t injured badly.
When I was 8, I visited my grandma’s house and their cat. He usually wakes everyone up at like 3 AM, but he never did that to me. He sensed that I was a child, and put up with me playing with him.

It's not like you call animals that don't have a name, that you don't know the name or sex of or if you just talk about animals in general, "it" in english.
@@projectpitchfork860 You can use "they" (or the clunky "he or she") for animals as well as people. Using "it" for anything animate is becoming increasingly pejorative. However, it still works for a hypothetical, generic animal. It just comes across as rude. Since they are talking generically, it would make sense to use "they" anyhow since they are referring to multiple cats.

3:01 I think I might know the source of this one. Cats and humans will often release hormones that relate to a parent and a child. That's not to say they "think" their human is their mother. Also... very recent studies indicate that your cat is just as capable as any dog of seeing you as something akin to a friend.
I appreciate the idea of this video. Though I doubt some of the info. Might be best to get cat behavioral specialist or cat specialist next time instead of general vets..
The cats and dogs hate each other was a super weird argument. Yes if cats and dogs live together they can get along. But in any other ciruimstance unless the dog is docile, it can consider a cat as prey.
@@Immor7alBG dogs can consider them prey but i don’t think they naturally do. In a lot of countries there are a lot more stray dogs and cats. They mostly avoid each other the way humans avoid stray animals. Mild annoyance and keep moving. Unless the dog is particularly hungry and the cat particularly vulnerable. But it’s not like stray dogs keep a cat population down because it’s their natural enemy or prey the way cats can wipe out a bird population or rat population.
@@Crzyangelgirl Ok let me rephrase that since I misspoke. Cats aren't prey to dogs, as in dogs won't hunt cats for their daily meal. But they are both obligate carnivores, which means that if you put them in the wild they'd have an antagonistic relationship. Now I don't know on average how a fully grown pet dog or cat reacts if you bring in another pet of the other species into your family and I say that because cats are usually more territorial and I know for a fact that introducing other cats as well can be a difficult process. But yeah as far as the myth goes, animals don't have ''enemies''. If two predators are vying for a hunting ground the stronger one will, given the chance, eat the weaker one.

Wow my comment is being taken out of context by some people... First off, notice how I said "die-hard vegans". If I was referring to all vegans, I would have just said "vegans" in my comment. Die-hard vegans are the vegans who think all organisms shouldn't be eating meat, even if they are carnivorous animals (dogs, cats, sharks, etc). They're basically the vegans that make all vegans look bad, because they strongly believe veganism is the way, the truth and the life, and anyone who doesn't follow their lifestyle is a crooked human being. Normal vegans (at least from my experience) respect the fact that there are people who like to eat meat and animal byproducts and don't judge them for their preferences. They're the chill vegans (at least from my perspective). You would be surprised that there are die-hard vegans that are LITERALLY FEEDING THEIR CARNIVOROUS PETS ONLY VEGETABLES on a DAILY BASIS. There are literally vegans out there who believe that dogs and cats shouldn't be eating meat as if it's poisonous for them. THESE PEOPLE GO OUT THEIR WAY TO MAKE OR BUY VEGAN DOG AND/OR CAT FOOD BECAUSE THEY STRONGLY BELIEVE THEIR PETS SHOULDN'T BE EATING MEAT. If you don't believe me, feel free to Google the truth and relay it to me, an unedumacated human being. I really thought I wouldn't have to explain my comment to some people, but here it is... 😐🙄
Rae17 KRB if only that was true! I’m sure most vegans do (I mean, I hope they do?) but I’ve heard way too many stories about vegans trying to put their cats (or dogs-they aren’t obligate carnivores but they still need meat to be at optimal health) on vegan diets and it’s really sad. Alas, willful ignorance is one hell of a disease.

I also didn't like how she said we could be easily replaced. I know both my cats love me dearly and my lady and I have a very strong bond, always cuddling and being in the same room together, my family even makes jokes about how we follow each other everywhere
You misinterpreted what they said and just focused on one part of the sentence. They didn’t just say that cats only see as a resource for food, they also mentioned that you are a resource for shelter and comfort. Your situation would fall on the last category, which means your cat sees you as comforting!
I have a son with Autism and when he is having a meltdown one of our cats will go up to him and soothe him and rub against my sons legs. As a person who has always had dogs I was astounded by our cats level of empathy and wanting to connect with us.
And she still avoids her 5 five years later

my cat was basically my father when i was born haha, he imprinted on me from the day i was born, when i was brought home he saw me and instantly loved me. whenever anyone, even my mom, got near me he’d nip at the feet to say “put her down” but never enough that i’d be hurt, and he’d always let my hold him, even in times if basically be hurting him, he was just calm and letting me, he was always by my side, i remember when i was sick, my cat would sit right next to me and stay there, he wouldn’t even get up to eat, not until i was well enough to get up. he saved my life when a rabid fox tried to attack me, he fought him off, but in the end was infected, he passed away due to rabies, but as a hero. i’m his last moments, he knew how much i loved him and how much i knew he loved me, that cat was my best friend and i will never forget him. he’s always in my hear, my Kitty Kitty :)
Thanks for sharing
may your cat rest in peace

"The typical cat sleeps about 23 hours a day"
Yeah, no...

Yeah, that myth is infuriating and almost as dangerous as that dog wagging tail = happy.
it's partly a comfort response in that case. I don't know if the vibration soothes pain, but I have heard of some studies that the vibration may help with healing!
I assume you'd want to look at other behavior to help narrow it down. I think the big takeaway for that myth is that cats purr for different reasons, not JUST because they're content.

She died a few weeks later of sadness, in my granddad chair
I don't think she only saw my granddad as a caregiver, or that anyone could be able to fill his spot.
@Doppelganger D they definitely know the difference. My cat is much more nervous around males than females.

“Cats are supposed to be most active during dusk and dawn.”
Then there’s my cat that does zoomies at _anytime_ of the day _besides_ the hours of 11pm and 7am) 🤷🏻♀️
Mine does major zoomies most of the day, then cries to me when I'm in bed at 4am.

cats bond with ppl, yea sure they don't think you r their mother, but they don't replace ppl THAT easily
at least to my exp, I have been feeding and taking care of stray cats in my area for years.

Vegan facebook karens: *I'm gonna pretend i didn't see that*
_that sign can't stop me because I can't read_
In theory cats can survive on vegan cat food with vitamin supplements but this may be quite unpleasant and not very healthy for cats.
We are omnivores, but they are (obligate) carnivores - in the wild they die unless they eat meat (which means killing wildlife), people who want to have a cat need to understand that.
My old french teacher's cat is forced to be vegan 😭😭 I hated that lady so much
KStar well that lady did. I know my own teacher’s habits thanks. She often told us about it.
My grandmother’s frail old cat and 150 pound bear of a dog loved each other so much! They would groom each other and snuggle all the time!

My cat was terrible. I actually think he had retained some lactose tolerance from being a kitten and damn well knew it.
I used to have doubts about cats attachment to their owners until my grandma had to give us custody of her cat for going to a retirement home. After a while she came to visit and her cat instantly recognized her and showed her love she wouldn't have given to anyone else.
I really don't understand where the idea that cats don't love their owners came from

They had seen their siblings and mother before because when kittens are born (not sure how long) they stay with their mother for a certain period and siblings for variety of reasons and than get adopted unless they are street cats.

Guys, that's a *HUGE* lie!

"Cats think their owner is their mother"
Whilst this two are highly specialized vets, they are not cat behaviourists ...

@@projectpitchfork860 You can use "they" (or the clunky "he or she") for animals as well as people. Using "it" for anything animate is becoming increasingly pejorative.
