My goodness. If that last question wasn't the most touching thing I have ever heard in relation to the hobby of reading I don't know what would be. For almost four years of my life, the anxiety disorder I was dealing with prevented me from reading. Heart pulpitations and chest pains, blurred vision and worries about impending doom all flooded forward when I would try to enjoy my downtime with a book. From a beloved hobby, a place where I had formerly found such distraction and solace, the loss of enjoyment brought to me by unburdened reading was a hurt that I rarely spoke of but was always a painful loss-of-self that I felt during those dark days. I found succes in managing the anxiety in time, and the aspects of myself that I had had to put away while embroiled in the battle for my mental health eventually found their home again. Oh, I so missed the internal and emotional space that reading carved out for me. The sense of loss that the poor woman would have felt as her vision deteriorated must have been similarly aching. Being alone in one's own mind with an author's words is such a gift when you consider all the noise, interruption and chaos that fills our daily work-a-day lives. Gawd, I'm so happy that she shared her story and had a chance to tell Ken the important place that reading his books had in her life. Truly, that share put a lump in my throat and brought a tear to my eye.
