I LOVE annotating my books! Whenever I'm bored ill just go back through my annotations and it'll give me a good laugh. i annotate my books like you do in method 2, and my school books are like method 3! Its so cool how our annotating style is so different! Your channel is amazing and refreshing and inspires me so much! keep making wonderful videos!! ❤
It's fun to see how your annotation system got more complicated over time going from method 1 to 2 (going from one tab colour to up to 6, using pens in different colours instead of just one etc), while my procesd was exactly the other way around and my first attempts looked a little like your method 2 and now my annotations look more like your method one (a bit different, the number of tabs varies a little from book to book). When I started annotating I think around 2 years ago, I watched a ton of "how I annotate" videos and almost all of them had the 7 colour annotation key for the different emotions (pink being about love, sad being for sad moments, violet for shocking/moving moments etc.), so I started doing that too. My books ended up looking a lot like yours from method 2 and they are absolutely beautiful, but man was that method a bad fit for me. I hated highlighting in my books and writing with pens/markers, oftentimes I was confused if a particular passage would fit one of my colours better or another, etc. It was just a lot of work and didn't make me happy. At the same time I enjoyed being able to write down my thoughts as I had them and I love the look of tabs on the side of a finished book. So nowadays I only use pencil, don't underline feel bad anymore for marking a book up and making it "unsellable", and I can underline anything that sticks out to me without first having to think about what colour would I use to underline. And my tabs don't follow a strict plan but depend on the book. If I read a romance written from only one perspective and no big plot outside of the lovestory I only use one colour to mark the most important moments in their lovestory (the moment the main character realises they are in love with that other person, their first kiss, their first steamy scene, the conversations about their pasts and the reasons why they couldn't be together/communicate with their partner much sooner etc...you know, the key moments any romance has). The tab colour is the one that fits the cover best. If I read a book from 2 or more perspectives, I usually have one tab colour per POV, again, mostly based on what colours go with the cover best. One of the last books that I read was a romance about a polyamarous relationship, so I tracked the developing relationships between character A and B, B and C, C and A and the bigger relationship that they then formed, because each of those relationships had different and interesting dynamics. I haven't read a fantasy book yet that I annotated but I guess I will have a tab with general information about the wordbuilding and then one that tracks the main plot and one for the side plot/romance? Idk, still figuring out how I will deal with books that aren't contemporary...
first of all, love this long comment! and i can definitely see how going all out for books like the second method can be A LOT, i definitely only do that for a book that i know i am going to love! i'm glad you've found something that works best for you!! i like your one tab color per character pov idea, i'll have to try that out at some point! i also fit my tabs to the book specifically, it just makes so much more sense that way, also that's generally how i have my tabs set up for a fantasy book? i feel like they dont really need that complex of an annotating system and keeping it simple is always preferable!
I adore how you annotate your Cassie Clare books!! So satisfying! Also loved the editing of this video and the way you stacked the books as transitions, absolute perfection 👏🏻
I have no idea why nobody asked you to do this when I love the way you annotate (from what I've seen in your videos) and have always been curious. maybe I should've asked. I do annotate my books, I have lots of methods that kinda resemble yours, in a way??? like I don't annotate a classic the same way I annotate a romance book. but almost all the books I read have some sort of annotation. I'm glad you're enjoying dickens, he's truly a gem.
that is a high compliment my friend😂 and i just love how personal annotating is to someone so it’s cool to hear about how you annotate as well! ive read half of great expectations and i really need to get back to it haha, ive really been liking it so far!
I use the first method for just any book I think I'll like but I don't write in them, just on the tabs or sticky notes if I feel the need. I do the second one if it's a book I want to analyze more in depth. The third one I use for school most of the time unless it's a book I had an interest in before hand (also helps to use a simple system for school cause it's easy to sort through the tabs and if it's a library book). I like your example of academic annotations, maybe I'll incorporate them more going into this school year. This was helpful in the aspect that ik someone else has multiple systems like I do
I'm just watching this now and it's interesting seeing the difference and similarities between you and Cass's annotating books video. Both fun and informative to watch :)
I've just recently discovered your channel and I've loved all of them since! Been watching all your vlogs and they are so sweet, inspiring, and encouraging for me to go back to my books. Your content is just ✨refreshing✨ after a long day of studying. Keep it up and have a lovely life!
Great video! I especially love your idea of cutting up bigger post its into smaller ones. I love the colours of the paper ones but the plastic ones are small so that was an amazing tip!
I ❤️ annotating but I love being “sloppy” ig you could say. I just rush to write stuff down and use post it’s mostly. It’s very satisfying when a book gets thicker and gnarled from me writing in it so much. It really shows to me that I loved the book. But I love how ur books look 😭 I wanna be neat like you
thanks for ur vid ❤i already annotated a book, but it was only my pjo series (which is my favorite btw) and now i'm planning to do it with pride and prejudice, and it's a very different book, so i was thinking on how my annotations should be different as well! it's also a rereading and this is a book i love so much, but i separated different colors/categories for this and i'm feeling like using a lot of big post-its for annotation, bc on pjo i just wrote little thoughts on the page and jane austen is way more complex. seeing how you change your annotations depending on how you read inspired me a lot now. i didn't know your channel, just subscribed and will see more of your vids!
Love this video. I just stumbled across one of your reading vlogs (I love your cat BTW - they're so HELPFUL aren't they? I've 3 and they love "reading" with me) x anyway I actually had a look through your videos to find this so I'm sooo glad you decided to do a annotation "how-to" kind of thing. Thank you 🐈⬛🖤 xxx
i enjoy annotating occasionally but I always find myself reading a book, getting 50 pages and then i kinda what to start annotating but i cbb going back and annotating from the beginning 😭😭 lol anyways great video!!
i have this problem constantly😭😭 i never know when to just go for it and annotate from the start because in worried i won’t end up liking the book! and then it do and im sad i wasn’t annotating from the start!!
Question for all the annotation girlies/etc, do you use the tabs in the future? Like do you go back and thumb through tab to tab? Asking because I’m stuck between just sticking with erasable notes and underlines in the text vs adding the actual tabs? Don’t want to add extra work for myself if I’m unsure of the purpose❤
I just use tabs and that's it bc I don't feel comfortable with writing in books or underlining them either. But we all have our different ways of doing things.
Hi! 😊 So I know you from Cassandra Lynn's videos, but you showed up in my feed(?) while I was thinking about annotating books and I thought, hey, what better time to watch your videos? 😂 Just a disclaimer: I don't annotate. I used to in college but I wasn't guilty about it because we were just given photocopies of chapters as we went along the lessons and so we weren't writing on actual books. (I suspect our lit professors knew some of us would feel 😨 about it and so thought about ways to bypass that. 😂) I laughed at one of the tabs you had indexed for The Picture of Dorian Gray (every time Lord Henry annoys you) and also your annotations for The Iliad ("recap: idk man") like, mood. 😂 The way I annotate these days (I read e-books most of the time) is I take screenshots of quotes as I read, and then after finishing a chapter, I would review my screenshots and write down favorite quotes or moments I would like to comment on in a separate notebook. It's a lot of effort with some books, but it works for me and it's also a way to practice my cursive. 😂 (Call Me By Your Name was like 23 pages worth of annotations, which at the time I thought was a heck of a lot, until I read Hamilton: The Revolution and it's like 50 and a half pages long. I do not want to think about annotating Dostoevsky in this manner. No ma'am, I'll just buy a second-hand copy or smth and annotate the heck out of it.) However, as I'm currently konmari-ing the house, I am definitely going to unhaul(?) some physical books and so maybe instead of unhauling them, I could take a couple to read/reread and annotate away, writing on the book and putting post-its, the whole nine yards. IDK, I just really want to try annotating an actual book. So yeah. Thank you for...I guess, convincing me to go ahead and write on some books? 😂 (Yikes, sorry for the long comment. 👀)
well thanks for coming on over ;) also i looove long comments no worries! i'm so glad i have convinced you to go ahead and try annotating directly on the books, it's scary at first honestly i couldn't even think of defacing a book like that but now i feel weird if i DON'T write down my thoughts as i go along! i hope it works out for you, it really makes the reading experience so much more engaging and just really fun
I would love to start annotating my books, but I am still not sure on how or where to start even though I have watched a lot of videos like yours, help!!!

Yes, I do annotate my books! Sure, its nice to have a system, but sometimes I'll just underline and make little notes.
i've definitely taken a more casual approach with annotating my books recently, its nice!

I've only ever annotated books for school, but after creating a bookstagram account, I'm feeling tempted to do it for fun!
you totally should!! a heavily annotated book is like my favorite thing ever
I've just recently discovered your channel and I've loved all of them since! Been watching all your vlogs and they are so sweet, inspiring, and encouraging for me to go back to my books. Your content is just ✨refreshing✨ after a long day of studying. Keep it up and have a lovely life!

ah yay! i also love all the tabs and what not in that book!!
I have been WAITING for thissss

Have you had any of the ink come off the book pages when removing the post its?
try clear sticky notes!! makes it so much more fun
ah i need to get some asap, they look so cool!!
@@katieisreading yes they are. You can write notes without writing on the pages itself 😍
Hey sis, question here.. what kind of editing software do you use for your vids? Also loved the video!! I subscribed!! 🥰💋😘
i use final cut pro to edit! and thank you so much!!
I just started annotating and I seem to be highlighting ALOT lol
I have a B.A. and a teaching credential in English and my copy of The Iliad has multiple scholarly annotations of, “???.” 😂
Isn't Charles the brother of Matthew? Or did I get that wrong. On your cheat sheet it says Charles is the brother of Thomas. I was kinda confused😅
i'm the 666th like hehe.. good video! thanks for sharing your process:)
haha thanks!
You should have used the red tab you stole from your desk job for Vicious lmaoo
ah i know! it was such a missed opportunity😭
