@@mikeparez She's sort of in that mental state of. "My past self is dead, this is who I am." And has been able to hold that persona for many years, but Anduin putting it together of "Why" She wants to give him a chance is for one thing. If she takes the choice away, she's just the next arthas.
Sylvanas tries to play Anduin forgetting the Little Lion's bestie is a literal black dragon, son of Deathwing, a master manipulator. They were playing friendly mindgames while Anduin was just a teen.
Oh damn. The Jailer was just using Denathrius all along. I was hoping he'd come back at some point this expansion! Also, they seem to have really improved the facial rigging, the animation on Sylvanas in particular looks really good in these cinematics.

@Invictus_trax i think Denathrius just does whatever he feels will empower him, rather than what is humanitarian. I wouldn’t be surprised if he planned to betray the jailor himself
Ok, but can we talk about "It's the choice you never had"? The way it, like, strikes him, and it puts what she's doing in perspective. I don't know about lore much but Frostmourne is a very different. Arthas lost his humanity and basicaly became someone else. Silvanas is looking fine holding this sword it's like they're just transmoged it
@@rousrouslan4023 While the method is different, in the end its pretty the same which that both weapons would corrupt the soul of the user. Sylvannas is fine at the moment because the Jailor 'trusts' her, for now.
I'm not sure if it's the same sword, or just one that looks like it (in the same way that Mograine has a new sword in the image of Ashbringer). Anyways, what some people may have missed is that the Jailer says Denathrius fulfilled his purpouse while picking a crystal from a portal. I think that crytal is the result of Denathrius' experiments with the Naaru to create something like the crystal used in the Ashbringer. It makes sense to use a Light bearer to wield it. She wasn't lying when she said she respected Anduin or else she wouldn't have hesitated to use that mourneblade on him. She knows what it does, it's what made her into what she is now.
I have doubts that Shalamayne will be able to turn Anduin, even with that mourneblade crystal they imbued it with. It's why they want Anduin so badly, his inner power, his light, seems to be that potent.
it's not respect lol, anduin literally said in the video why she's hesitating and she's hating herself because he's right. Or at least it seems like he's right. I don't think even the writers know what are they doing with sylvanas. XD
Anduin: "Search your feelings, Sylvanas. You can't do this. I feel the conflict within you. Let go of your hate. " Sylvanas: "It is too late for me, Little lion. The Jailer will show you the true nature of the Death. He is your master now. " Anduin: "Then Sylvanas Windrunner is truly dead."
the difference is sylvanas has a choice where arthas' soul was consumed by frostmounre and he was just a slave to it granted he did choose to wield the sword he couldn't have known the outcome despite the warning
@Julia Díaz Sylvanas didn't. She was made to serve against her will - will she do the same to Anduin knowing what that means? My hunch - she hesitates for too long, Jailer comes in and decides to stab Anduin himself, Sylvanas shields Anduin and takes the hit, being transformed into the Lich Queen where Anduin escapes and she's later defeated, however, her soul spared because of her choice.
@Julia Díaz Arthas free will died when he taken up frostmourne. Sylvannas was forced to be unliving sure but no outside entity was forcing her to kill innocents.
In case anyone hasn't figured it out, the Jailer is testing her. He's not an idiot, he knows she was once mortal and thus has a soft spot for mankind despite all she's done and been through. By stealing Anduin's soul the same way Arthas stole hers, she'll have completed the transition into what is essentially the Shadowlands equivalent of the Lich Queen and become the very thing she always despised more than anything else. It's the only way the Jailer can trust that she is fully capable, willing, and committed to the cause with no remaining emotional attachments.
Honestly reflecting back on that finally makes her heel face turn following the soul shard reunion *make sense.* She is face to face with the realization that, with that final choice, she had become what she once vowed with all her power and fury to destroy. *She* made that *choice.* *That* is why she stays in the Maw and doesn't try to do something conniving to escape.
Indeed. We are once again at a crossroads. Another human royal, blessed with the Light, finds himself before a blade of Death and Despair. Where the Paladin fell to darkness, I have faith that the Priest will rise to the Light, as he always has.
Damn, the look in her eyes when she tells Anduin "I didn't come this far only to falter now". It's exactly the words the Jailer said and to me it feels like she's telling herself that rather than to Anduin like she doesn't want to use force on Anduin at all but she's compelled to do so in some way.

this might be the best cinematic (done in-engine) in the history of WoW from the animation to the voice acting -- really top shelf. So many little touches like Anduin glacing down at Shalamourne before looking back up to face Sylvanas. All the cinematics since the prepatch have been stellar, but this is the best one yet in my view.

@@soggybiscuit4208 except they don’t, Anduin has been a character pretty much since Cata and Sylvanas has always been jelly/scared or angry at someone ever since she became a corpse
it is basically evil guy dialogue 101 in my opinion. They always go for the "You know what must be done" to a X or Y character so they won't hesitate to do evil things.
@@orrthehunter See that's the thing - it's a good piece of dialogue if used once, maybe twice. Problem is, they use it so often and have literally have never changed how it is said. It is always verbatim "You know what must be done" and I'm amazed that isn't caught in rewrites.
Anduin: "Then how about I become your... big lion? You'd like that, wouldn't you?" Sylvanas: "Oh Anduin, you have no idea how long I've waited for you to say that. Take me here and now, boy!" Anduin: "At your side, milady!"
Anduin realized that if Sylvanas let him lose hope, then Sylvanas could finally let her go too ... But in Sylvanas's case, it's still hope for what? Free will? Sylvanas has always said that she never had a choice ... so at the end of the cutscene, Anduin gives her the opportunity to make a choice that Arthas did not give her once - enslavement with the runeblade or not. In the cinematic in the role of Arthas - Sylvanas, and in the role of Sylvanas - Anduin, even the scenes are very similar. "Make your choice, Sylvanas Windrunner" Sylvanas did not have that choice on the day of her death, so her choice becomes very interesting.
I don't care if people hate both of them this scene is amazing for so many reasons. Her holding the runeblade is an EXACT mirror of arthas, except she has her free will and he didn't. She can CHOOSE not to commit these atrocities. She's giving anduin the choice she never had and he's showing her how she became the thing she swore to destroy. The thing that took everything from her and her people....and she knows this and she HATES it. It's great.
The mind battle between the two is so good! I'm shook that the Jailer turned Shalamayne into a mourneblade, though. I was speculating on Reddit that Anduin would get a light-forged runeblade to become the anti-Arthas. It seems that I was only partially correct. He is getting a runeblade, but it's his, and it's likely to be used to make him the next Arthas instead.
It’s weird seeing facial animation this subtle and good at what it’s trying to show in the same cinematic as a guy who still has bananas for bangs. There’s really no good way to apply physics to that boy’s hair.
Yeah, I honestly have hated Sylvanas for a lot of reasons but moreso for the loyalist fanboys she has that defend everything she does, but he as a character plainly I don't mind, you're not supposed to like her or the things she's done which makes her compelling as a villain, or anti villain. This interaction with Anduin was actually really well acted and it set Anduin on par with her when she always seems to try to be elusive and subtle about her inner thoughts playing 4D chess. It felt good to see Anduin stand against Sylvanas and for her to not have some form of clap-back ready.
@@roguepoison She literaly had no problem brainwashing Derek to kill his entire family in their sleep, She having moral troubles now with the same choice but with anduin Is either Hypocrisy or their are writing with their arses.
@@PsicoPrime well for one, she didn't try to turn Derek with a mourneblade, she raised him from the dead and wanted to subjugate him and make him an assassin/spy, this scene clearly showed the parallels of how Arthas turned her into a Banshee which does strike a cord in her. I'm not saying that there isn't any hypocrisy or inconsistent writing, but there's a big difference from from raising the dead through her Valkyr and using a mourneblade.
@@PsicoPrime I personally haven't played WoW in years so I can't speak for character consistency or not, tbh. I only judge these cinematic as they are and based on what I knew of Sylvanas from WC3 and classic WoW
Is it just me, or is 1:08 the moment Anduin sees the sword? ^^ As if there is a flicker of sadness followed by an almost instant "okay, this is it". The facial expressions are so cool, though!
I need the music of this cinematic! So good especially when it starts building up while Anduin makes his shrink talk and when it escalates to where Sylvanas cutting it off!
Also, I love how much Anduin fights Sylvanas'/Jailer's classic villain banter. Sylvanas saying things like "The choice is yours to make", "Join us as an ally or serve us as a slave" and "You are only making this harder". Meanwhile, Anduin is like "No no. I don't play like that" and proceeds to psychoanalyze her. Even better is that he finally puts the pieces of the puzzle together, causing Sylvanas' cold shell to crack. Anduin turned this into Sylvanas' choice. He's in no position to threaten Sylvanas like this, yet he manages to do so because Anduin finally figured her out. And she knows that everything Anduin is saying is right. That "Don't" delivery is when Sylvanas realizes this. She wants so badly to force him to submit, but something is holding her back from doing so. Also, when the Jailer suggests that it's time to corrupt Anduin, Sylvanas, in a roundabout and ass backwards way, defends Anduin, saying that he isn't ready yet and to give them more time. Sylvanas is in the position of power now, but she has to tell herself that she *has* to do this, repeating the same thing the Jailer said to her along with the cliché "You know what must be done". But now, Sylvanas is questioning this. She's been trying to break through Anduin's mental wall, but has failed to do so with words alone, all the while wearing Sylvanas down so that by the time she's told to force Anduin into submission, she hesitates. TL:DR This is a really good cinematic to deconstruct and I'm excited to see where the dynamic between these two takes them.
Also also, When Sylvanas heard about Sire Denathrius' capture, her immediate question to the Jailer was asking how they are going to rescue him from the enemy. All the Jailer had to say was that Denathrius had fulfilled his purpose and moved on just as quickly as the subject was brought up. That right there told Sylvanas that the Jailer didn't see Denathrius as anything more than a weapon or a tool that had played his part. Now he's intent to simply put that tool away. Anduin warned Sylvanas that the Jailer is going to use Sylvanas, caring little for her ideals and wants. At that moment, Sylvanas realized Anduin was right. I love that instead of Sylvanas convincing Anduin to join forces with death, he made Sylvanas question her allegiance with death. The mirco facial expressions and the voices say it all. It's very subtle but very well done. Props to the animators and voice actors. They be killing it!
I think it might just be more of a proxy for her little brother or a son she never had, especially if she feels somewhat responsible over what happened to Varian at the Broken Shore.
I have been amused by the fact that the Jailer lets his prisoners keep their armor and weapons while he has them locked up. Seriously, does Anduin sleep in that freaking armor?
i would imagine its probably just for cinematic model convenience sake. unless of course part of being tortured in the maw is being forced to sleep in armor.

Considering Denathrius is his brother he seemed rather apathetic about him.
I got a feeling by the end of this, we will get an Arthas Apology to sylvanas, and by extension an redemption for both
In case anyone hasn't figured it out, the Jailer is testing her.
So that's what Nathanos meant when he said to her, "When the time comes, there can be no hesitation."
Honestly reflecting back on that finally makes her heel face turn following the soul shard reunion *make sense.* She is face to face with the realization that, with that final choice, she had become what she once vowed with all her power and fury to destroy. *She* made that *choice.*

"Make your choice, Sylvanas Windrunner"
Sylvanas did not have that choice on the day of her death, so her choice becomes very interesting.
Arthas's voice was also a mess, but you loved him cuz it's Arthas
Same voice actor as in Batman
Why I think she will be Alarak in Warcraft?
This cinematic was amazing. Also my guess is she'll betray the Jailor but still persue her ''antagonistic'' goals.
Ofc she betrays jailer....she still have humanity inside her ..she is afraid of death , she wants to chose how will "live" eternity,
I'm still standing behind my theory that Sylvannas secretly loves Anduin.
I absolutely hate you for giving me this ship! Thsi theory will never leave my brain again! Good job
You're welcome! :D
*Yeah Nathanos is just a hopeless and useless dude*
I think it might just be more of a proxy for her little brother or a son she never had, especially if she feels somewhat responsible over what happened to Varian at the Broken Shore.
@@sir_weltschmerz thanks this cleansed my soul
Anduin out here Hannibal Lector-ing Sylvanas I am thriving.
Thats unexpected but I like that. I always liked sylwanas but even more when she was on good side before she becomes undead
I have been amused by the fact that the Jailer lets his prisoners keep their armor and weapons while he has them locked up.
Seriously, does Anduin sleep in that freaking armor?
He also shits inside the circlet.
It probably wouldn't be that comfortable to sleep in.
i would imagine its probably just for cinematic model convenience sake. unless of course part of being tortured in the maw is being forced to sleep in armor.
I mean they made an armorless Maiev
He's a priest. It's cloth obv and very comfortable.
Anduin:"Then why are you hesitating?"
(flash-back to Nathanos in Ghostlands) Nathanos: "When the time comes, there can be no hesitation."
Inside Sylvanas's brain: "internally flips table like she just lost a game of psychological monopoly.
*Meanwhile somewhere in Torghast*
Arthas shouting in the background: Purge! Purge! Purge! Purge! Purge!
Sylvanas: I can still hear his voice tormenting me inside.
Arthas: This entire Citadel must be purged! This entire Citadel must be purged! This entire Citadel must be purged! This entire Citadel must be purged! This entire Citadel must be purged! This entire Citadel must be purged!
ahaahhaha canon
